CHAPTER III

LOKI'S AGENDA, PART I:

THE DARK TITAN AND THE HAWK

Vocabulary.

Schöne Dame – Beautiful Lady. (German)

Loki hardly remembered having days as busy as that weekend; so many important appointments to attend and so little time. Of course, if he wanted to rekindle his friendship, with his Schöne Dame; it would be essential. But, first things were first, and pissing off someone as Thanos wasn't the smartest move. He had to be punctual to their meeting.

The Fallen Prince of Asgard closed his eyes and took a few deep breaths. He focused his mind in a specific point in the room briefly, then closed his eyes slowly. When he opened them, he was on a barren moon surrounded by the emptiness of the Void. Its sharpened rocks were dimly lit by a cold bluish light, emitted from the stairs leading towards the Dark Titan's black throne with a cold bluish tint.

Loki walked slowly and greeted Thanos with the reverence that the Mad Titan deserved. The Prince of Chaos knew how dangerous his situation was, so his words and gestures were carefully chosen.

"Hail, Thanos, The Great King of the Chitauri!" Loki said with a tone that emitted such reverence. "Here I am as a faithful servant waiting your command."

"Greetings, Fallen Prince of Asgard," Thanos grumbled with indifference. "Listen carefully: The Tesseract has awakened on a little and insignificant world called Earth. Its inhabitants are trying to tame its power, but we know that it never will happen. In exchange of the Jewel of Odin, you will lead our troops and conquer that pathetic world."

"Your generosity is admirable, Great Thanos."

"Silence and listen!" Thanos snarled. "In order to succeed in your task, I grant you this scepter. It will help you to gather your magic to control the minds and hearts of the dwellers of that pathetic realm."

While the Mad Titan spoke, one of his heralds gave Loki a golden scepter in which was a blue shinning jewel. The Mad Titan continued speaking. "Use it well, Exiled Prince of Asgard, and your reward will be a world to rule."

Loki withdrew. His meeting with The Chitauri's King went smoothly; much more than he expected. The Mad Titan had placed in his hands a scepter that would help him in his task ahead. He was also granted an army of his fiercest warriors who were ready to follow his command. Loki also knew that controlling the Tesseract was the key of the victory.

He also was aware that only someone with Asgardian blood could success fully harness the cube's full potential. Because of that, The Mad Titan needed his help. The Prince of Chaos smirked. He knew where it was and had an plan of how he would get it. In order to successfully take control of the Tesseract, he needed to enlist the 'help' of certain people. It was show time.

Late Night, Somewhere New Mexico, USA.

"All Personnel, the evacuation order has been confirmed," boomed avoice on the loud speakers. Simultaneously, soldiers and other official personnel swirled around the nearest exit, and the helicopters flew around adding more chaos to the scene. The alarms were ringing loudly, and in a place like this, it wasn't a good sign.

Here was SHIELD's underground compound. The people gathered inside the compound, taking position for what appeared to be an unprecedented emergency, although few of them really knew the true purpose of the place. Any doubt about the seriousness of the situation, was quickly dispelled when a helicopter landed close to one of the entrances. In front of it, was Phil Coulson, who was displaying an astonishing amount of calmness, given the circumstances. The agent was impeccably dressed. The only thing that was out of place were his sunglasses, as the late hour and resulting darkness hardly showed need for their use. As soon as the helicopter door opened, a young woman dressed with SHIELD's uniform emerged, followed by a man with an eye patch, dressed with a black suit and a gabardine of the same color.

"How bad is it?" He said with a tone of voice that denoted his rank within the agency.

"That's the problem, sir. We don't know," Coulson answered while he removed his sunglasses. Whilst they were descending towards the underground levels, agent Coulson continued his explanation "Dr. Selving read an energy surge from the Tesseract four hours ago."

"NASA didn't authorize Selving to go to test phase," Replied the man with the eye patch, who identified as SHIELD Director Nick Fury.

"He wasn't testing it." Coulson replied while he looked seriously at Fury. Headded, "He wasn't even in the room."

Nick Fury did gazed at the agent and added after a short pause, "Where are the energy levels now?"

"Climbing. When Selving couldn't shut it down, we ordered evacuate."

"How long to get everyone out?"

"The Campus should be clear in the next half hour."

"Do better." retorted Fury with a serious tone. Coulson retreated and continued with the evacuation process. Fury and the woman continued descending the staircase. The woman, whose name was Maria Hill, expressed her concern about the situation.

"If we can't control the Tesseract's energy, there may not be a minimum safe distance."

"I need you to make sure the Phasetwoprototypes are shipped out," replied Fury while his mind was focused in the Tesseract's behavior.

"Sir, is that really a priority right now?" Maria asked with a slight surprise.

"Until such time as the world ends, we will act as thought in intends to spin on." Fury confirmed. He headed toward the room where the Tesseract was. "Clear out the tech below. Every Piece of Phase two on a truck and gone."

"Yes, Sir," replied Maria. Looking at the two guards that were close, sheordered,"With me."

Fury hurried up his steps and entered the subterranean room. Inside, the scientists of SHIELD tried to regain the control of the cosmic cube. Anxiety was at its peak, while nervous glances and anguished whispers filled the air. In the other corner of the room, the Tesseract's power came and went, as if the artifact wanted to release its potential at the max and its attempt were stopped by the scholars that were in the room. Leading the battle to tame the Tesseract was an elderly man with white hair and blue eyes, Dr. Erick Selving – The leader of the scientist branch of SHIELD.

Selving, one of the most brilliant minds in the world, had a lot experience dealing with unusual situations - as he was the friend of the owner of the most powerful weapon of the Nine Realms: Thor. But this time, the situation was linked closer to Earth rather than an extra-dimensional event. If the situation wasn't under control soon, the power would be unleashed soon.

"Talk to me, Doctor."

The Scientist's attention flew from the Cube to theDirector ofSHIELD. Fury walked towards Selving, and greeted him with a simple, "Director."

"Is there anything we know for certain?" Fury asked while slowly approaching at the scholar's location.

"The Tesseract is misbehaving." The scientist replied with a nervous glance towards the artifact.

"Is that supposed to be funny?" Fury replied; he realized that if the situation wasn't so dangerous he might have had patience for pleasant humor. But the potential of an impending Doomsday, was nothing laughable at all.

"No, It's not funny at all," Selving confirmed with a worried tone while both looked at the Tesseract. "The Tesseract is not only active, she's behaving."

"I assume you pulled the plug," Fury replied with a neutral tone.

"She's an energy source," Selving explained with apprehension while both men walked towards the mechanism that contain the Tesseract. The scientist reached the computer that was giving a report about the current situation and started to check the figures that appeared on the screen. "We turn off the power, she turns it back on. If she reaches peak level..."

"We prepared for this, Doctor. Harnessing energy from space"

"But we don't have the harness. My calculations are far from complete." The scientist rebutted looking at the director with fear. He turned his attention back to the computer's screen. "And she is throwing off interference radiation. Nothing harmful, but they arelow levels of gamma radiation."

"That can be harmful." Fury answered while his mind remembered the Gamma Incident - where a scientist, a general and a green and angry creature were involved. "Where's Agent Barton?"

Selving looked at the Director of SHIELD; pointing with his finger at somewhere behind him, up in the roof, and said "The Hawk? Up in his nest, as usual."

|\/\/\/\/|

"Agent Barton, report."

Clint 'Hawkeye' Barton was keeping a close watch of the situation, comfortingly nested in the complex's roof rafters. Barton was one the best assassins of the world, not to mention the best marksman with the bow and arrow. So legendary was his reputation with his weapon of choice among the SHEILD agents, that he was nicknamed the 'Robin Hood of the XXI Century' - of course, without the Sherwood Forest.

As soon as he received Fury's message, he slipped downstairs using one of his gadgets. While he walked towards his boss, Clint, with a hint of annoyance, could clearly hear his voice by the com link telling him, "I gave you this detail so you could keep a close eye on things."

"Well, I see things better from a distance." The marksman replied.

"Have you seen anything that might set this thing off?" Fury asked while both men walked away from the Cube and the scientists who were trying to regain control of it.

Hawkeye looked at the scholars struggling with the artifact. He barely heard a woman in the background say with a troubled tone, "Doctor, it's spiking again."

Selving walked towards the female scientist and both checked the computer screen. Fury's attention was drawn toward the Cube and the portal which was some feet away, while Barton's was both focused at that point and his boss.

"No one's come or gone and Selving's clean. No contacts, no IMs. If there was any tampering, sir, it wasn't at this end," said the marksman.

"At this end?" Fury echoed, establishing a special remark in those words. Obviously, something in those words caught his attention.

"Yeah, the Cube is a doorway to the other end of space, right?" Clint mused while he watched what was going on in the other extreme of the room. His sight turns towards Fury and added, "Doors open from both sides."

Fury pondered the reasoning. Thinking the words over, it seemed that such a possibility wasn't so crazy. Director of Shield vaguely heard Selving mutter "Not yet", before a strong sound caught his attention. He and The Hawk turned their bodies and looked at the other extreme of the room. The Tesseract was reacting again. Contrary of its previous outbursts, this time all the building shook at the power of the Asgardian artifact - literally.

While most of the people congregated in the complex were wondering what was going on, those who were in the same room of the cube watched with disbelief and amazement at what was happening in front of their eyes.

All present watched how the Tesseract was being surrounded by blue flames of pure energy. After few seconds, all its power was concentrated in the other extreme of the room, where a platform with aset of stairs had been installed. SHIELD had built the staircase as a lead to alaunching point to travel to other points on Earth and the Universe. But now, the door was opening, and they didn't have the strength to close it down.

The portal opened and a burst of energy shook the room. All of SHIELD's troops aimed their guns towards the figure that was kneeling on the platform. Remnants of blue flames started to swirl in the dome that was above of the platform while the guards slowly started to approach. A shady figure on the platform slowly started to rise, revealing long black hair and a pair of green eyes that looked at them callously. A smile formed on his lips. The man was dressed in an unearthly fashion, but nevertheless elegantly. His clothes were green and he had a golden spear decorated with a blue jewel that seemed to be a piece of the Cosmic Cube.

"Sir, please put down the spear," Fury commanded without hesitation. Everyone could feel the tension in the air. For a second, the figure, Loki, seemed that he would obey. But in an outburst, the Prince of Chaos shot an energy ball against Fury.

With quick movement, Clint Barton tackled down the Director of SHIELD, saving his life. Meanwhile, the guards opened fire against the Asgardian, but with his superhuman agility, Loki fought back. He stabbed one trooper with the scepter and threw several knives against others. With his magic and weapons, the Prince of Chaos started to dominate the situation while the others looked on with horror as he deflected bullets, and other injuries he received healed quickly.

When everything ended, the God of Mischief looked around: The place was severely damaged; many members of the staff and guards were severe injury or dead - few of them, remained unharmed. With a smirk, Loki scanned the area util he found what he was looking for.

Barton staggered as he stood up. He still had his gun in his hand, but out of the corner of the eye, he saw something coming at him very quick.

It was him.

Without delay, The Marksman tried to raise his gun and shoot, but the Asgardian was faster and caught his arm. Fear started to crawl up Hawkeye's spine when he sensed the power of that hand.

"You have heart" Loki told him with a neutral tone, just before moving the spear towards his heart.

For few seconds, the Marksman fought the influence of the spell, but it didn't last; all his eyes turned black, and after a few seconds, acquired a bright bluish hue. Suddenly, in Clint's mind, he felt a new sense and new loyalties. He slowly stayed his gun and waited for the orders of his Prince and future King.

Fury watched helplessly at the turn of the events and how the stranger turned others agents and scientists of SHIELD against each other. The spy silently took the Tesseract and put it inside a special briefcase, then started to walk away.

But his escape was stopped by Loki's smooth voice "Please don't, I still need that."

"This doesn't have to get any messier," Fury said with a neutral tone, while many ideas crossed his mind to avert a bigger disaster.

"Of course it does." The Prince of Chaos replied with the same smooth tone but with a superiority smile in his face, then he added, "I've come too far for anything else. I am Loki, of Asgard. And I am burdened with glorious purpose."

That name rang bells in the minds of those present. "Loki, brother of Thor," Selving muttered looking at him. He had tried to check the status of his fallen colleague, but it was too late.

"We have no quarrel with your people," said Fury, confronting the Asgardian.

"An ant has no quarrel with a boot," Loki sneered back.

"Are you planning to step on us?" replied Fury keeping his face stern.

" I come with glad tidings of a world made free."

"Free from what?"

"Freedom. Freedom is life's great lie," the Asgardian sneered while he walked around.

As confirmation of his affirmations, he gently tapped Selving's hearth with his spear. "Once you accept that, in your heart... You will know peace."

"Yeah, you say peace. I kinda think you mean the other thing," replied skeptical the Director of SHIELD.

Barton was watching the course of the events very closely; knowing his former boss, Fury was up to something… Suddenly,he realized what it was. "Sir, Director Fury is stalling." Clint warned his Prince, he somehow felt as if he should protect him from whatever Fury was planning against him and the golden era that he was bringing. "This place is about to blow and drop a hundred feet of rock on us. He means to bury us."

"Like the pharaohs of old." Fury replied dryly; deep inside, he regretted the ramifications of his decision and the deaths of many good only fault was acting as puppets of an insane demigod, but for the greatest good, he knew he needed to stop them there and now. Many innocent lives were in the stake.

"He's right. The portal is collapsing in on itself," said an enslaved Selving. In his own way, the scientist had to help to protect his Prince. "We have two minutes before it gets critical."

"Well, then." Loki said to Clint. The Marksman needed no further instruction. Without warning, he shot at his treacherous ex-boss. His new boss -no, his Prince walked toward the exit, followed by his fellow guards and Selving. Barton took the briefcase and walked behind them. It was time to leave SHIELD and join to the service of Loki of Asgard, and the future King of Midgard.
