Alright, thanks to Elphabalover101, this story is off hiatus and back on track! This chapter is dedicated to Elphabalover101 for reviewing and encouraging me to continue.
Alex's POV
All through the rest of the day, I kept thinking about what Elphaba said to me. The looking at her part was easy. Now, you may believe dufferently, but I honestly found it easier to accept that Oz was under a serious dictatorship than to accept Elphaba was a Wicked Witch.
True, finding out the Wizard of Oz is actually a fraud with no powers except political influence is very disappointing. But honestly, it really hurt to know Elphaba had given up so much to stand up for what she thought was right. This woman had a life, a family... and now it was all gone. It just wasn't fair that she had to live like this.
"Alex..."
If there was a way I could get her back together with Nessa, her sister...
"Alex..."
... And Glinda, her best friend...
"Alex!"
... Fiyero...
"ALEX!" Kendra's voice calling me finally registered in my head.
"Yeah?" I asked.
"What is it?"
"Oh, nothing." Just like I promised, I met Kendra after my first visit to Elphaba, except I told her there was nothing out there. I knew I had to lie to protect Elphaba. Now, though, I was seriously considering telling her the truth.
And that's what I winded up doing. Hey, the girl was obviously onto me anyway! In the middle of math class that day, I whispered, "Okay, I lied. There is someone in those woods."
"The Witch?" Kendra smirked.
"Technically, her name is Elphaba, but-"
"I knew it!" She rose from her seat and asked to go to the office. Great job, Alex, I scolded myself. "May I use the restroom?" I asked the substitute, knowing that teachers hate when people say "can." The sub nodded, and I raced out the door after my classmate.
When I spotted Kendra, I ran as fast as I possibly could and grabbed both her arms. "Hey!" she exclaimed. "Ow-what the...? Alex, let me go!"
"Kendra, just listen to me," I told her sternly. "You can't call the guards! They'll kill Elphaba!"
"Who cares?! Elfabula-"
"Elphaba."
"Whatever! She's a wicked witch; it doesn't matter if she lives or dies!"
"It matters to me!" After I said this, she looked at me in surprise. "Why?" she questioned simply.
As a reply, I repeated Elphaba's narrative about becoming the Witch. "Kendra, she was crying because of what she did, and what she lost because of it." I continued. "She may seem wicked, but I'm really the only one who knows how much she's suffering inside."
Kendra was quiet for a moment, but then she said, "I'd like to tell whether she's really wicked or not for myself, if you don't mind."
