Natasha stood over Fury's unmoving body, eyes glistened with tears yet not falling. He was dead. The man who had given her a second chance at life...dead. The only thing she knew for sure was that his murderer was a man with a metal arm, the one Steve had mentioned. It was the Winter Soldier. But why? Why would he want him dead?

Agent Hill stepped into the room next to Steve and Connie. "Sarah is safe," she whispered. "That's all I can tell you."

Connie drew in a shaky breath and glanced up at Steve. His eyes were cast down and filled with heart wrenching sadness, among other emotions too. It was her fault that they hadn't seen Sarah in so long, just so she could play agent and do a mission.

Tears started to well up in her hazel eyes. She was yearning for her daughters touch. Connie was not only scared for her but she was frightened with the recent turn of events. She had no clue what was going on or why Fury was shot in their suite. Tony had been taken in for questioning and there was no doubt she would be soon. But Connie had been tranquilized as soon as she even stepped into their suite. All she remembered was a sharp prick on her neck then instantly blacking out. She woke up only hours ago, feeling sick to her stomach but unable to rest upon finding out from Steve what had happened at the tower.

Hills eyes were cast wearily at Fury's dead body. "We have to take him," she whispered again.

Natasha whipped her head around and narrowed her eyes at Steve. Connie leaned up against him while his arm wrapped protectively around her. Natasha knew Connie was small compared to Steve, but she didn't really notice their drastic height difference until now. Steve stood exactly a foot over his much smaller fiancé. Natasha's eyes glazed over Connie. Natasha could tell Connie was trying to keep her emotions at bay. She could definitely relate to how she was feeling.

Steve looked down at his fiancé, still dressed in her white shirt and red flowy skirt from the day before. "I need to talk to you in private."

Connie nodded in response and let Steve lead them down the hall into an unoccupied patient room with dim lighting and old equipment.

Once they had entered the room, Steve checked the room for anything out of the ordinary and for any security cameras.

"Steve..." Connie's voice was shaken with confusion and fright. "What's going on? Why is this happening?" Steve pulled her in and held her close. "We need to find her, Steve. We need to talk to Agent Hill and-"

"Listen to me, Connie," Steve cupped her face and stared into her saddened hazel orbs. "We don't have long to talk but if Hill says she's safe, she's safe. Whatever is going on, it's bad and I need you to go somewhere safe. Find Tony. I need to figure out what's going on."

"Shield took him in for questioning over an hour ago. No doubt they'll take me too."

Steve realized she was right. They would all be pulled in for questioning pretty soon. Steve grabbed her hands and held them to her chest.

Steve pulled out the thumb drive Fury had given to him. "What do you know about this?"

"I-I don't know. Fury didn't say anything to me or Tony," Connie eyed the thumb drive suspiciously then looked at Steve. "Wait, why do you have it?"

Steve quickly shoved it back into his pocket. "Fury gave it to me right before he died. He told me not to trust anyone."

Connie then started to get dizzy. This time she couldn't tell if it was from the tranquilizer or from everything else that was happening. She was tranquilized, Fury was shot in killed in their own home, Sarah was somewhere in hiding, and now Steve was telling her that Fury said to trust no one.

"Then how do we know we can trust Agent Hill with our daughter?" Connie balanced herself on his strong forearms. The room was definitely spinning now.

Steve slipped a hand around her back and supported her effortlessly. "She was Fury's second in command. We can trust her, Connie."

Connie didn't say anything, only nodded. What other choice did she have?

"I love you," Steve blurted out, catching Connie's attention and making her look at him. "I'm sorry for yesterday and I want to explain everything but now is not the time."

Connie looked away. She was unsure of everything right now. "What do you want me to say right now, Steve, I don't know who to believe or what's going on for that matter. We don't know where our daughter is, Fury got shot in our apartment-"

"Tell me that you trust me and tell me that you love me," Steve cut her off and cupped her face in his large hands before pulling her in close and holding her tight. "I've been messing up these past couple weeks, Connie, I know this. But through all of this, I need to know that you trust me," Steve pulled away and stared into her eyes. "I love you and our daughter," Steve used his thumb to brush a stray tear that fell from her eye. "I promise we'll get through this together and we'll get our daughter back. We'll go home and I will marry you and spend the rest of my life making you happy."

Connie stared into Steve's blue eyes for several seconds. She knew she could trust him. She had no reason she couldn't, despite the issues they've had. Steve had saved her, in more ways than one. He was the love of her life and the father of their daughter. If there was anyway they were going to get through this, it was together.

"Steve, I-"

The door opened loudly, cutting Connie off. It was Natasha.

"You might want to stop being so secretive," she interrupted. "They're already suspicious and looking for you."

Steve let out a frustrated sigh and led Connie out of the room and into the hallway. Natasha was walking away from them.

"Natasha," Steve called out.

"Why was Fury in your home?" Natasha turned to face them. Her tone was suspicious and it was clear she didn't trust him.

"I don't know," Steve simply replied. He honestly didn't know.

"Cap, they need you back at SHIELD," came Rumlow's voice from behind them.

Connie turned around when she heard Rumlow's voice and saw that he was staring at her. His eyes moved down her body and lingered on her chest for a short moment before turning his attention towards Steve. His lingering stare caused shivers to go down her spine. Connie never liked Rumlow but mainly because Steve didn't. He would always tell her how he seemed off and untrustworthy, like he was always hiding something. Connie had few encounters with him before when she and Steve were at SHIELD headquarters and she definitely got that same vibe Steve had.

She wondered if Steve had caught Rumlow's staring. Connie felt so uneasy under his stare. She unconsciously moved towards Steve and held his arm to her chest. Steve noticed this and turned his attention towards Rumlow.

"Yeah, give me a sec," Steve told him before turning his attention towards Natasha.

"They want you now."

Steve turned around and fixed his eyes on Rumlow. Connie could tell Steve was holding back from snapping.

"Okay," Steve responded firmly.

"Alone," Rumlow added before walking the other way.

Steve gently grabbed Connie's arm and pulled her close. "Stay with Natasha," he whispered and kissed her temple. Truth be told, Steve still trusted Natasha even though Fury told him not to trust anyone. He and Natasha had worked together in the past and Natasha appeared to have a close relationship with Fury. Connie was better off under Natasha's protection instead of by herself.

"Okay," Connie whispered before he pulled away.

"You're a horrible liar," Natasha told him. "I'll make sure she stays safe."

Connie wanted to wrap her arms around his neck and tell him she loved him over and over again. But Natasha was walking away and she had to follow.

"I love you," she quickly said and walked away.

For Steve, hearing those words helped. He silently prayed that she would be kept safe and that he would be able to see her soon. Her and their daughter. Steve reached into his pocket and remembered Fury's words. Don't trust anyone.

Connie quickly caught up with Natasha and turned around just in time to quickly see Steve retract his hand from the vending machine. She instantly knew that he had hidden the hard drive in there so SHIELD wouldn't find it.

"Let's get you a change of clothes. Something you can move in," Natasha led them out of the hospital. "We have to stay discreet, keep your head down."

Connie did as she was told and followed Natasha down the street. It was in that moment that Connie realized she wouldn't be returning to SHIELD for questioning. They were on the run.

***
Steve made his way down the hall to Alexander Pierce's office. As he approached his office, he saw Kate, or Agent 13, He saw her nod her head then walk towards him.

"Captain Rogers," she greeted.

"Neighbor," Steve replied lowly, pissed off that she had been keeping tabs on him and Connie for who knows how long. He couldn't say he was too fond of her. He always found her a bit flirtatious and would feel uncomfortable during the few times he bumped into her. She would turn a bit rude when Connie would pop into the picture.

"Ah, Captain," Pierce stuck out his hand towards Steve, "I'm Alexander Pierce."

"Sir, it's an honor."

"The honor is mine, Captain. My father served in the 101st, come in."

Steve walked into Alexander Pierce's office and saw Tony standing off to the side. Steve made eye contact with Tony, who ever so discreetly, rolled his eyes at Pierce. He assumed that Pierce would have wanted to interrogate him alone, but it did make sense as to why Tony was there.

"I don't need to be here. I don't work for SHIELD and you have no authority over me," Tony non-chalantly replied, crossing his arms. Steve noted he was wearing his metal bands, for once beig thankful he was security miss away from gearing up should he need to.

"Mr. Stark, you're here because Director Fury was shot at the Avengers Tower, your tower. And your security and cameras are working except in only one room? Which is also the room where Nick Fury was shot and murdered," Pierce leaned against his desk and crossed his arms at Tony.

Steve was surprised at this new information, though he didn't let it show. Why would JARVIS be disabled from only their room?

"I told you, Miss Halloway has asked me earlier that day to cut off JARVIS. Said she was uncomfortable. Probably didn't want JARVIS to see her getting nasty with gramps over here."

"I dont appreciate your lack of seriousness, Mr. Stark," Pierce's tone was laced with irritation.

"Well, I'm not lying to you," Tony bluntly replied.

Secretary Pierce stared coldly at him for a few seconds before turning his attention to Steve and giving him a photo. "That photo was taken five years after Nick and I met...

***
Connie and Natasha walked through a small shopping outlet they had found and grabbed a few pairs of clothes. Connie made sure to grab a few things for Steve as well. Then her attention was turned to the small TV behind the cash register when she heard...

'This just in! It appears Captain Steve Rogers, also known as Captain America and billionaire Tony Stark, infamously known as IronMan, are now wanted fugitives...'

Connie's mouth dropped slightly when she heard that Steve and Tony were wanted. Immediately she knew that they were being framed. Her eyes widened when she saw Steve and Tony destroying a plane. Tony was fully clad in his suit and firing at the plane while Steve was on top of the plane destroying it with his shield!

Connie understood the situation and knew Steve well enough to know that that plane had most likely attacked him and Tony first. Steve would have never done anything like that unless he thought it was necessary.

"Holy shit..." Connie whispered to herself as the lady rung up their items.

"Don't you wear glasses?" Natasha asked as she paid the woman.

"Yes," Connie answered, already knowing where she was going with this.

"You might want to put them on. And your hair is too long. It makes you easily identifiable."

Connie nodded at Natasha. As soon as she got a chance, she would have to chop off her long blonde locks, which now reached the bottom of her back.

"We need to go back to the hospital," Connie interjected.

"You know they'll be looking for us there. Why?" Natasha questioned.

"Steve hid the thumb drive in one of the vending machines. The one we used to steal information from the Lemurian Star."

Natasha led Connie into the dressing room and took off her shirt. Connie couldn't help but be a little envious of the Black Widow. She was very fit and very endowed. Connie followed suit and began to get undressed.

"Fury gave it to him," Natasha stated as she took off her bra, replacing it with a sports bra. "But why?"

Connie noticed Natasha had a scar across her stomach, but she didn't ask why.

Connie took off her bra and replaced it with a sports bra of her own. "I have no idea. But Steve told me that Fury said to trust no one when he gave him the thumb drive."

Natasha nodded and continued to get dressed, opting for a casual look. "We have to get it."

Connie nodded and pulled her new grey long-sleeved shirt over her head. Luckily it had a hood and was light weight. She wore black pants and black combat boots. Now all she had to do was cut her hair.

Natasha pulled out a pair of scissors from the bag. It was like she was reading her damn mind. "Trust me. I've done this countless times."

***
Steve walked down the halls of the SHIELD hospital, his head down and his hood draped over his head. He peered into the vending machine and saw that the hard drive was gone. The hard drive and all the bubblegum in front of it. His heart started to race... then Natasha appeared behind him and blew a bubble with her gum. Steve felt his blood boil when she popped it and started to chew obnoxiously.

Steve forcefully grabbed Natasha's arm, led her into the closest room, and pushed her against the wall.

"Where is it? And where is Connie?" Steve harshly asked.

"Safe. Where's Stark?" Natasha bluntly replied.

"Do better."

Natasha glared at him. "Where did you get it?"

"Why would I tell you?"

"Fury gave it to you. Why?"

"What's on it?" Steve demanded. He was losing patience.

"I don't know."

"Stop lying," Steve said through gritted teeth.

"I only act like I know everything, Rogers."

"You knew Fury hired the pirates, didn't you?"

"Well, it makes sense. The ship was dirty, Fury needed a way in-"

Steve pushed her against the wall again, cutting her off. "I'm not gonna ask you again."

Natasha looked at him with wide eyes. "I know who killed Fury...most of the intelligence community doesn't believe he exists. The ones who do call him the Winter Soldier. He's credited with over two dozen assassins over the last fifty years."

"So he's a ghost story?"

"Five years ago, I was escorting a nuclear engineer out of Iran. Somebody shot out my tires near Odessa. We lost control, went straight over a cliff, I pulled us out. But the winter soldier was there. I was covering my engineer and he shot him, straight through me," Natasha pulled up her shirt, revealing a scar on the side of her stomach. Soviet slug, no rifling. Bye bye bikinis."

"Yeah, I bet you look terrible in them now."

"Going after him is a dead end, I know, I've tried," Natasha pulled out the thumb drive. "Like you said, he's a ghost story."

Steve eyed the thumb drive before plucking it out of her hand. "Well let's find out what the ghost wants."

Connie chose that moment to step out of the shadows and made herself known to Steve. Steve had no idea she was in the room and hardly recognized her.

"Connie..." Steve breathed and pulled her into his embrace.

"I'll give you guys a few minutes. Stay in here until I say so, I'm going to find us a way out," Natasha stepped out of the room.

"I was so worried about you..." Connie took a step back and stared at her fiancé.

Steve tucked her hair behind her ear, careful not to nudge her glasses. Connie looked so different without her usual make up but it reminded him of when they first started dating. She would hardly ever wear make up and always wore her glasses and beanie. As the months passed, Connie would make more of an effort to look better. Connie already admitted to dressing and glaming up to impress Steve though he assured her many times she was beautiful just the way she was.

And she was so beautiful to him.

"I'm glad you're okay. God, I love you," Steve ran his fingers through her hair and kissed her feverishly. He couldn't help himself. He needed her in more ways than one, though he knew this was neither the time or place. Steve pulled away and ran his fingers through her shoulder length hair.

"I love you too," she answered and held him tight.

"By the way, you look so beautiful," he commented while tugging on her hair.

"Thank you," she tucked some loose strands behind her ear. "Steve are you okay? I saw you and Tony destroying a quinjet," Steve noticed how she went a little pale before speaking again, "a-and it was shooting at you. You're both wanted, Steve. Why is this happening?"

Steve cupped her face and pressed his lips to her forehead. "I'm not sure, Connie. But we have to find out what's on this drive. I need to find a safe place for y-"

"No, I'm staying with you, Steve. I don't feel more safe other than when I'm with you. Please, Steve, please don't leave me."

Steve opened his mouth but was unable to form a sentence. She was right. Where would she go? Hill was long gone and other than her, there was no one else who he trusted aside from Natasha and Tony, and they were both wanted as well. Maybe Sam...

"I have a friend, Connie. You can stay with him while I sort out this mess-"

"No," Connie interrupted. "You're not leaving me. I need you, Steve. Please..." Connie clutched his shirt and fisted it in her hands, pulling him close.

It hurt Steve to see the woman he loved scared for their lives. Their daughter's life. "I couldn't forgive myself if anything happened to you..."

Connie shook her head. "It won't. I have you to protect me," Connie wrapped her arms around his waist and buried her head in his chest. "I'm scared, Steve..."

Steve wrapped his arms around her tiny frame. His heart sunk. He really didn't have an option except to take her with him.

"Alright," he breathed. "But you have to promise me that you'll do as I say, no matter what. If I tell you to run, run, okay?"

"Okay, Steve. I promise," Connie stood on her toes and planted a kiss on his jawline.

"One more thing," Steve reached into his pocket and pulled out her engagement ring. Steve managed a weak smile, despite their situation. "When all this is over, we're getting married."

A smile tugged at her lips when Steve placed the ring on her finger. She threw her arms around him again. "Yes, we are. I love you."

"I love you too," Steve stared into her eyes for a few moments. All they had to do was get through this big mess, whatever was going on, and then he could marry the love of his life.

Connie felt the warm literally spreading throughout her body as she thought of marrying a man like Steve. She knew the last few weeks and especially the last few days had been hard on the two of them. But Connie now realized that all that mattered was the love in their hearts they had for one another. All that mattered was staying together and staying safe so they could through this and see their daughter.

"Steve..." She whispered his name quietly. "What do we do now? Where's Tony?"

"Told me he had to take care of something and he'd track us down later," Steve informed. "When Natasha gets back, we have to leave this hospital unseen and find a computer. Hopefully whatever we find in this thumb drive will help understand what's going on."

Connie looked up at her soldier, looking to him for the confidence and strength to help get through this. She had no idea what was to come or just how bad things were going to get. But based off the incident with Steve and Tony destroying that quinjet, she only assumed the worst was yet to come.

Steve's blue eyes met her hazel eyes and he saw the fear and uncertainty through them. But he also saw strength and determination. A mother who wanted her daughter back and would do anything to make sure she did.

"I love you," he ran his fingers through her hair. "No matter what happens, just know that I love you."

Connie stifled a smile. "Oh, Steve. I love you too. I'm so scared..."

"And so am I," Steve admitted, pulling Connie towards him. "But nothing will happen to you or Sarah, I promise."

"P-promise me that you'll be okay t-too," Connie started to cry and buried her face in his chest. She couldn't bear the thought of losing Steve.

Steve stared down at her and silently thanked the man above that he had someone like Connie to love him the way she did.

"I promise, Connie."

Connie leaned into his embrace and wrapped her arms around him again. She too promised herself in that moment that she would get through this with him, find their daughter, become his wife, and be happy with him and Sarah.
