AN: I'd like to say something to a few of my very rude readers who felt it was a better idea to simply insult me rather than attempt to leave constructive criticism.
To my 'guest' reviewer who left this review: "If you don't know how to use Hero cards, then why even try to write a story with Jaden in the first place? He LOVES his Heroes. Plus, they're super easy to use if you know how to READ." I'd simply like to say that yes I CAN read but clearly you can't since you didn't take the time to actually read what I put in the Author's note to comprehend it. I have used Hero cards before, I know their effects, I simply don't feel comfortable using all HERO decks as they just don't click with me so I'm giving Jayden decks that I understand and do work well with.
One of my other reviewers, who while not quite as rude as the last one was still rather insulting, insisted that I was turning this story into an 'overpowered self-insert fic' when, no, I'm not. I use my own decks because I KNOW them, I now the different strategies and combos I can use with them as I made them myself and work well with them. Also, saying that it is a stupid idea to change what decks are used because I don't like working with them is a 'less than sound decision' is, once again, not true. This is a fanfiction, our own versions and we, as writers, shouldn't do things that we know we're not good at and/or feel uncomfortable with. Also…IT'S AN AU! It's going to be different from the anime!
Okay, ranting over, on to the story.
A True Slifer Red
Chapter 3
-Jayden-
Giving a final goodbye to Yugi and Solomon he shouldered his bag, heavier with all the new cards he had, and walked onto the helicopter that would be taking them to Duel Academy, his new water deck safely secured in a deck box on his belt while the HERO cards his dad had given him were safe in a glass container to preserve them. As soon as he stepped onto the copter that he was taking all talking ceased as people turned to stare at him in awe due to the fact that he had Slifer in his deck. Smirking he nodded and sat next to the guy who had dueled before him in the exams. "Why hello," the faintly British sounding person said as he got settled "the name's Bastian, Bastian Misawa. And you are?".
"Jayden," he answered as he leaned over to shake the guy's hand "Jayden Yuki.".
"Well Jayden" the Brit said eagerly "would you be willing to answer a few questions?".
"Depends on the questions," he said with a shrug "I'll at least listen to them but if I don't want to answer I'm not going to.".
"Fair enough I suppose," Bastian said with a nod "I was wondering where you got Slifer?".
At that questions everyone, even the pilots who were taking them into the air, seemed to hang onto his words with bated breath "From Yugi Motto, where else," he said with a shrug "he's my sponsor at Duel Academy.".
"Sponsor?" Bastion asked perplexed as several other students around them blinked in confusion.
"It's a new system being implemented this year," he explained "Kaiba is allowing pro duelists to select a student at the academy if they want to who they'll sponsor. For some it will be a title, some will provide monetary aide to poorer students, some will offer cards or advice, it's all dependent on each sponsor. Added to that Kaiba said he was fixing up some old abandoned dorm to house the sponsored students.".
"Then why have none of us been sponsored by anyone?" Bastian asked, gesturing to the rest of the first years in the copter.
"It was only fleshed out yesterday," he answered with a small laugh as he scratched the back of his head in embarrassment "I'm the first one to be selected and it was designed as Yugi wanted to sponsor me so he and Kaiba designed the system.".
"Well I look forward to dueling with you," Bastian said with a grin that was, almost, savage "it will certainly be interesting to see.".
"That it will." He agreed before they drifted into a calm silence as the people around them wondered who else would be picked to be sponsored. Finally, after a way too long helicopter ride, they landed at the island as he jumped out of the helicopter and stretched out his stiff muscles. "Man it feels good to be out of there!" he said as he heard several others agreeing with him.
"Come on guys," he said, gesturing to Bastian and the Blue haired kid, Syrus, that he had met at the entrance exams "I think I see registration over there.".
Walking over they signed the rest of their paperwork and received their Duel PDA's as well as Duel Blazers with Bastian getting a yellow one, Syrus getting a red one, and he got one that, to his surprise, was red but had a black tribal Slifer design on the back and sleeves. "What's with the different blazer?" he asked as he put on the jacket, hearing a faint roar of approval from the spirit of Slifer in his deck.
"Mr. Kaiba thought it would be amusing," the man handing out the blazers explained "technically your status is equal, or even above, the Obelisk Blue students as your official rank is 'True Slifer Red'. It's a system Kaiba is planning out for you or any other students who use deity class cards successfully.".
"Sweet," he said with a grin before he frowned "hey, I remember Kaiba saying something about an old dorm being renovated for myself and the other sponsored students. Could you tell me where that is?".
"Your PDA has a GPS," the man answered "and it was pre-programed with your dorm location. Simply pull it up and tell it to take you to your dorm.".
"Thanks." He said with a grin as he waved goodbye before heading back over to Bastian and Syrus. "Come on guys," he said "let's go check out the campus.". As they moved around the campus, checking out the different facilities, he had quickly written out an application to work at the card shop, before they got to an Arena.
"Impressive," Bastion said with a grin as they looked around "it will be quite the event to duel in here.".
"You guys want to find out?" he asked with a grin as he reached for his deck.
"Are you sure we're allowed?" Syrus asked nervously.
"Sure we are," he said, brushing off the concerns "we're all students here and this is our Campus.".
"Wrong!" a rather nasally voice interrupted them "This is the Obelisk Blue Campus.".
"Yeah," a deeper but rather dim sounding voice added as they glanced over at two obelisks walking towards them "you Slifer Slackers and Ra Rejects aren't welcome here.".
Hearing that he simply laughed at their sheer stupidity while Syrus and Bastion chuckled, "What's so funny?!" the nasally guy demanded angrily.
"Do you not see his jacket?" Bastian asked while gesturing to his tribalized jacket "He's been named the 'True Slifer Red', a student who's status is equal or greater than an obelisk blue. He was given that rank as he is the duelist who wields Slifer in his deck.".
"It's you!" the two obelisks said, backing up in shock before a new voice spoke up.
"Well, isn't this interesting." The new voice said as he looked up to see the guy who had badmouthed him during the entrance exams "The wannabee duelist who somehow got Slifer.".
"I could out duel you any day of the week," he said calmly "any guy who has two hangers on like you do clearly has doubts about his own strength.".
"You're one to talk!" Nasally guy said angrily "Isn't that right Chaz?".
"Okay, two things." He said with a smirk "One, you just proved my point about you two. Two, these guys are my friends, not my 'posse'.".
The two idiots were about to, try, and retort when Chaz held up a hand for silence, "You say that you can out duel me any day of the week?" Chaz asked with a raised eyebrow "Then prove it. Tonight we'll meet here and duel, each of us putting up our rarest card as an ante.".
"So you're after Slifer." he said with a small scowl. Before he could refuse the duel however he heard the spirit of the mighty Sky Dragon whisper to him, telling him to accept the match. "Fine," he said with a glare "just be prepared to fork over the ante when I thrash you.".
"Whatever." Chaz snorted "Let's go guys.".
Shaking his head at the trio of fools leaving he turned back to his friends "Come on guys, the welcome dinners are gonna start soon.".
"Well I guess I'll see you two at the duel tonight," Bastian said with a wave "this is something I don't plan on missing.".
"Alright, later Bastian." He said with a wave before turning to his nervous friend "Come on Sy, let's go. As I'm the only one in the sponsored dorm I've been scheduled to eat my welcome dinner at Slifer.". Later that night, after a rather delicious meal cooked by Doctor Banner, he found himself in the arena with Bastian and Syrus, "Alright Chaz," he said as he saw his opponent waiting for them with tweedle dumb and tweedle dumber "you ready to fork over your rarest card?".
"More like I'm ready to take Slifer," Chaz said with a snort as they got into their positions and activated their duel disks "I'll go first.". Watching he saw Chaz draw before smirking and calling out "I'll start off by summoning Reborn Zombie in defense mode and then adding a face down. Your move.".
"I guess that's one way to start a duel," he said with a snort as he drew "but I think I'll do something a little different.". 'Alright,' he thought as he looked at his hand 'I did my own research on Chaz and found out that in Ante duels he researches his opponents and creates decks to beat them so that trap is probably designed to take away Fusion Monsters which the HERO card focus on…good thing I'm using my water deck'. "I'll start out with double summon!" he called out as he played his spell card "And use it to be able to summon my Spined Gillman and my Shocktopus!".
"What the?!" Chaz yelled in shock "Those aren't HERO cards!".
"I'm being sponsored by Yugi Motto Chaz," he said with a grin "he fills his decks with a variety of cards to avoid a set 'theme' while I use a variety of decks to keep people guessing. Now, my Gillman's ability adds four hundred attack points to all Fish, Sea Serpent, and Aqua monsters I control so I'll use him to take our your zombie and Shocktopus to attack you directly for two thousand points of damage!".
Growling Chaz drew before smirking, "I'll play dark hole!" Chaz called out as he snarled when his two water monsters were destroyed "And summon Chthonian Soldier in attack mode before attacking you directly! Your move Slacker.".
Snarling he saw his life point meter drop while Chaz smirked at him before he drew his card, "I'll set one card face down and end my turn." He groused as he set his Gale Lizard.
"My turn then," Chaz said with a sneer "and I'll sacrifice my Soldier to summon Mefist the Infernal General! Now, Mefist, attack!".
"Thanks Chaz," he said with a smirk as Chaz looked at him in shock "you attacked my Gale Lizard! When Gale Lizard is flipped up I select one monster you control and return it to its owner's hand so say goodbye to your general!".
Growling Chaz took the card from the disk before smirking "But you'll still take elven hundred points of damage thanks to Mefist's ability and you'll have to discard one random card from your hand! Now I'll set one card before ending my turn.".
Growling he felt his life points drop down to seventeen hundred, putting Chaz in the lead, before his 'Call of the Atlanteans' card was discarded from his hand. "My turn then," he growled before grinning "and I'll play the field spell 'A legendary Ocean' and summon my deep diver before attacking you directly!" as Chaz's life points went down to eight hundred. "Your turn." He said with a smirk.
"I'll activate my Call of the Haunted to bring back my soldier before sacrificing him to bring back Mefist!" Chaz called out "And use Mefist to destroy your Deep Diver and deal eight hundred points of damage to your life points and, once again, you lose a card.".
Growling he discarded his 'Reese the Ice Mistress' before sending away Deep Diver as his live points went down to elven hundred, "But thanks to my Diver's ability I can take one water monster and put it on top of my deck," he said with a smirk as he flipped through his deck and selected it "and because it's my turn I'll draw it! Now I summon my new monster, Rage of the Deep Sea who gains five hundred attack points for water monster in my graveyard and I have five so his attack points are twenty seven hundred thanks to that and my field spell!".
"But that card's a level five monster," one of the Flunkies cried out "You need a sacrifice!".
"No he doesn't," a new voice called out as he glanced over to see a rather pretty girl walking into the arena the field spell 'a legendary ocean' lowers all water monsters levels by one so he can summon it.".
"That's right," he said with a grin "and the difference between our monster's attacks happens to be nine hundred, more than enough to beat you. Rage of the Deep Sea, attack!". With a yell Chaz was blasted back as the life point meter dropped to Zero, "My Card Chaz," he said with a small glare at the bully "now.".
"Fine," Chaz sneered before tossing him a card called 'The End of Anubis' "good riddance.".
Shaking his head he turned to the girl who had walked in and was staring at Chaz in irritation, "Hey, thanks for the support there at the end. The name's Jayden.".
"Alexis," she said with a small smile "Alexis Rhodes.".
AN: Just a little note, I'll be doing the duels in this story by taking the deck I designed (and own IRL) and actually shuffle it before playing along with the Anime episode to try to make it as realistic as possible. Also, some other 'sponsor' plans I have are:
Alexis is Sponsored by Mai
Zane is sponsored by Kaiba
Chaz is going to be sponsored by a minor antagonist from the previous Yugioh (as soon as I decide who)
