Chapter 4: Dreams

Arriving at school thirty minutes before the bell rang Rin entered through the school doors and went straight to her homeroom being careful not to cause herself any more pain than necessary as she walked down the halls to her homeroom with the other kids hurrying past her.

Right before the first bell rang she entered her classroom and made her way towards her seat. As soon as the second bell rang signaling the beginning of class, Matsumoto-sensei began her lesson, and within moments Rin had tuned her out and was staring out the window. Her gaze was instantly drawn to the boy that had bumped into her the first day she came back to school running around the schoolyard yelling at what she guessed were his parents.

'Lucky him,' Rin thought as she moved her gaze away from the boy and toward the chirping birds flying around in circles. 'It must be nice. . . to have such freedom, without worry of getting in trouble.'

She turned her attention back to the lecture right on time as she saw that Matsumoto-sensei was about to call out on her for not paying attention, offering her a small smile, she began copying down the notes from what Matsumoto-sensei had written on the broad and writing whatever she thought important from what Matsumoto-sensei was teaching about at the moment; never once realizing what was going on in the schoolyard once she turned her gaze inwards again.

. . .

When the lunch bell rang Rin was one of the only students that left the classroom and went outside to eat where a few others were running around or talking with friends. Walking to one of the only trees in the courtyard she noticed the boy that was in the schoolyard sitting alone under her favorite cherry blossom tree in the school with his eyes closed, stopping in her tracks, Rin looked around the courtyard to see if there was anywhere else to seat, and seeing there wasn't, continued toward the tree. Walking over to her favorite spot where she could see the outside world pass by, in the complete opposite side of where the boy was sitting, she unwrapped her bento not once looking in the boy's direction or opening her mouth to speak with the boy that sat in the other side.

She only had two sandwiches packed in her bento, she still hadn't learned to cook the hard stuff parents made their kids for lunch, so far the only thing she knew how to make were rice, fried pickles, sushi, and tempura. She knew she had a long way ahead of her to be able to make decent enough meals for herself to eat, but she had determination and courage to challenge herself to move forward.

Finishing up her last sandwiches, she looked up to stare at the cherry blossoms and was gifted with the sight of the sun shining through the blossoms and wished not for the first time that she had a phone so that she could take endless pictures of the beauty that surrounded everyone and if they just looked they would see it too.

With a sigh she closed her eyes and let the sun warm her up. She hadn't realized that she had fallen asleep until something poked her in her leg, rubbing the sleep off her eyes she looked around the schoolyard and noticed that everyone was heading back inside. Using the tree to get to her feet Rin looked around one last time to see if she could find whoever it was that had woken her up, before heading back inside with the rest once she saw that no one was around her to have been able to wake her.

She looked back one last time once she was inside the school doors and her gaze was held by that amber-golden boy but when she blinked she found that no one was in the courtyard. Shaking her head mentally she continued on her way to her classroom.

. . .

Rin walked along the school hallways along with the other kids leaving for the day and thought about what the writing teacher said was for homework that night. A 500 word page about what you wanted to be when you grew up and why.

She already knew what she wanted to be when she grew up, she wanted to be an elementary school teacher and if that wasn't possible she'll open up her own flower shop or become a photographer and move across the country to be as far away from her father as possible. The dream might not happen for another eleven years but her moving out was closer than ever; she just needed to wait another four years of torture with her father then she'll be out of that hell hole.

She had her dreams and was determined to make them come true. No matter what.
