Finn I
"Trust me. You'll love it here. This city is one of my favorite places in the world." Sage smiled her brilliant smile and suddenly Finn didn't care he was in some strange city. They could have been in the depths of hell and he would have been content, as long as Sage was with him.
Her red hair fell down her face, hugging it in the same way he remembered it. She had only been a servant when he meant her in Italy but even then, before he realized the depths of his passion, he had found her hair beautiful.
The passing city streets held no sway to him: the only thing that mattered in this world was Sage and having her back, and his eyes were only for her.
He could still remember waking up in that box, being able to think and feel, but unable to move. His mind trapped in his prison of a body that he hated so much. He had tried long ago to end his own life but his mother had truly been a brilliant witch. No matter what he did, what he tried, Finn had been unable to kill himself. His body healed from any injury, no matter the extent of the damage. A sword through the head, decapitation, burning. None of it worked. The fire had hurt, it did not hurt as much as it should have.
It was was cruelest irony when he found out that there blood could be used to help the living. Heal them from near fatal injuries. And even that gift, perhaps the only thing good that they could do was twisted. If someone died with their blood in their system, they would be changed into the same abominations as his family was condemned to be. Only they could easily die, where Finn and his siblings could not.
Even know he regretted turning Sage. Allowing his passions to over take his morals. He had condemned her to his cursed eternal existence and he would never forgive himself for that.
Why he regretted it, Finn could also not help feeling thankful for her presence in his life. His hatred of himself and what he allowed himself to become, his disgust for what his siblings turned into to, his desire to die...
None of that mattered in the face of Sage. His shining stare, the only light that could illuminate the darkened sky of his world.
"You can stop here." The cab driver did as Sage asked and they pulled up to the bar, Rousseau's.
"What are we doing here Sage?"
"Meeting a friend of mine. You'll like Sophie."
She opened her door and slid out of the car. Finn followed her out, reaching into his wallet and paying the cab drive the money they owned. He thanked them and the yellow car drove away.
"Who is he?" Finn asked, as they stepped inside. Behind the counter was a vampire. He could smell the scent of death from him. Vampires were the only things other than a corpse, who smelled like a corpse. His eyes perked when they landed on Sage and he gave her a wide smile, waving them over.
"Troy. I turned him a couple months back in Mystic Falls before you left."
"You turned him?"
Sage saw the look on his face and looked away. She began walking.
"Yes."
"Why?"
"In case your family tried to pull anything. Klaus had a pack of Hybrids and Elijah had friends in the town. We were outnumbered. I turned a few willing people just in case."
"People? Sage how many people have you turned?"
"... A lot."
"Sage why-"
"You were gone Finn." She stopped walking and turned to face him, their eyes meeting. "It's not your fault. I don't blame you. Klaus left you dagered. But then your family disappeared Finn. I was alone. Young, scared. I didn't even have a daylight ring.
"The people that dagered you were hunters. They knew about vampires and were out to kill us. I did it to protect myself Finn."
Shame washed over him as she spoke. She hasn't been a vampire for a week when he left her. He could kill Alexander and all his brothers for what they made Sage think she needed to do. Them and Nicklaus as well.
As much as Finn wanted to rail against it, he could understand her feelings. During his own first few months as an Immortal, he felt the same way. The feeling of power and blood were a high but they didn't last forever.
He couldn't stay mad at Sage and the anger he felt melted away. He could see the relief in her eyes as his smile returned to his face. Though the feeling was bitter sweet. He had only turned one person and until now, the thought that she had changed anyone else had never crossed his mind. Sage knew how he felt about being a vampire and how felt about changing other people. He thought she would have respected his feelings on the matter and why he could understand her doing it, that didn't change the fact that he had a sireline of vampires in the world. Sage had said she turned a lot of vampires and no doubt that they had turned people as well. And so on and so on.
Finn had thought himself above his siblings, who each had a sireline of vampires so long they could make it to the moon. He had believed he only had Sage in his line. But that wasn't true. He was just as much of a monster as each one of his siblings were. They were all the progenitors of a line of vampires that stretched out for who knows how long.
Which meant that he would also have strange vampires looking out for him. They had discovered only recently what happened to a line of vampires when the original in that line died. Over the millennium, his father Mikael had turned thousands of people into vampires. They came together and created the society of Red Dawn. A clandestine group of vampires that only fed on other vampires and whose mission in their eternal life was to kill other vampires. From what Sage had told him, they had been a plague on the vampire world for a long time.
Until they all died. Over night, ever member dropped dead. Why many in their supernatural community celebrated, mainly the vampires, questions began to be asked. What had killed this entire group of lethal hunters, that had plagued them since the creation of vampires?
Mikael had been the world's first vampire hunter. The monster that other monsters were afraid of. The news of his death by Niklaus' hand spread through the world quickly. It had been know that all the vampires belonging to Red Dawn were changed by Mikael and he had died. And every vampire in his sireline followed him to the grave.
Dots were quickly connected. Of course no one could be sure for certain. So they had to check. Short of killing an original, which was impossible as Niklaus used the only White Oak left in the world to kill Mikael, the options were limited. The ancient vampires in the world had resorces though and had relationships with powerful covens. One vampire went to the witches and had them perform a spell, to see if it was true, And what they found had shocked the world; that each vampire's life was bound to the original vampire that started their sireline. And if the original died, so would they.
It had become a race after that, to find out who's line you belonged to. Of course with the White Oak burned by them a thousand year ago, nothing was left in the world that could kill them. So the hysteria died down and life went on. Or so he was told. Except for those who did want to kill one of more of his family. If that family member changed them, then plans had to be changed. At the same time, if the one you wanted to destroy wasn't your sireline progenitor, you had a whole other line against you.
Esther Mikaelson's spell gave them more protection than any of his siblings could have imagined. And if he ever wanted to end his life, Finn had a line of vampires who would do whatever they could to stop him.
"Come on. Troy wants to meet you." Sage's voice took him out of his reprieve. Finn followed, his eyes set on Sage.
They took their seats at the counter, the vampire also had eyes for her. "Hey. Didn't expect you until later. Who's your friend?" Troy asked, turning his eyes on Finn. Finn stared back pleasantly, keeping his face a mask of indifference.
"Got in early," Sage answered him, looking towards the board on the wall. "Troy. This is Finn."
"Finn Mikaelson?" His curious look turned to one of disbelief and shock. "Wow. Hey 's an honor to meet you. I'm Troy."
"I know." He answered curtly. The way this young vampire looked at him, in reverence... He didn't like it.
"Rum and coke, to start off with Troy. For each of us."
Troy looked startled and turned away from him. "Right. Two rum and cokes."
"Thank you. Is Sophie in?"
"Yeah. She's in the back cooking."
"In that case, how about the house special."
"Two?"
"Two." Sage confirmed.
"He seems... Eager." Finn settled on the word, watching as Troy disappeared in the back.
"Of course he is. You're the sire of our line. A lot of vampires will want to me you."
Finn was sure he didn't want to meet them.
"Hayley!" Sage called. Finn turned around and watched as a young woman began to make her way towards them.
"Sage." She sounded relieved. The young girl took a seat on the other side of Sage, giving them both a look over. Finn took a breath and caught her scent. He had been expecting the rotting scent of a vampire or the appealing clean scent of a human. She had a tinge to her's; a distinctly animalistic one. Finn knew that scent well. Finn had grown up around werewolves.
What was a wolf doing here?
"What's your poison?"
"Bourbon," the wolf girl answered.
"Troy. Add a bourbon to the order." Sage called out, her voice at the sound level of a normal human. Troy would undoubtedly be able to hear it.
"Hayley, this is Finn. Finn, Hayley." Sage made the introductions. Finn had nothing against the wolves personally, though his father had started the war that nearly wiped out their species.
He extended his hand, not wanting to be impolite. "Pleasure." She took his hand in a firm shake.
"So you're Finn Mikaelson?"
"At your service."
"More polite than Klaus, at least."
"You know Niklaus?" Was that way Sage had invited her here. From her relief when she found Sage, Finn assumed that she had obviously been invited.
"Meet him. Got to know him. Fucked him in a late night binge."
Ah. So she was one of Niklaus' women.
"How was he?" Sage asked, turning a cat like grin on the Nikalus' wolf girl.
When she was human and worked in the palace, Sage and the other servants often gossiped about the aristocrats they served. It seemed that time had done little do dull Sage and her lose tongue. If Finn had not intervened, she would have lost it long ago.
As the two began to speak about more intimate topics, Finn was more than happy when the drinks arrived. When himself was brought up as a topic of discussion, he had decided then that he did not want to be here for this. He did not need to know anything they talked about.
Luckily enough, that subject seemed to exhaust itself quickly and Finn snapped at the chance to make sure their wouldn't be a repeat.
"Why is she here, Sage? You did not mention anything about wanting to meet a friend." A subject that was in much safer waters.
"I meant here in Mystic Falls. A friend of hers was part of Klaus' hybrid pack."
"Yeah, Tyler. I was able to help him break the sirebond. He didn't want to be one of Klaus' playthings."
"Can't say I blame him. I've seen how he treats his family." Sage's eyes flickered to him as she spoke. "You also helped him step up I hear. Your boy the new big bad alpha?"
Hayley laughed. "Yeah I guess he is. I hope he was able to help the other's. Then get the hell out of dodge before Klaus finds out and takes out that fancy sword he's got hanging on the wall."
"We've been in traveling for the last month. You never mentioned her. Or wanting to meet her."
"I kept in contact with her. Like I said; I like her."
Well Finn supposed that was that.
"So Niklaus broke his curse. How did he do it?" In the time after they left the New World, it had been a point of bitterness for his brother.
"He found the doppelganger."
The doppelganger. In his mind, Finn saw the clear picture of Tatia, as he had seen her in life. Etched forever into his memories.
Elijah and Niklaus both had fallen for her when they were mortal. He could not imagine seeing Tatia's face on someone else would have been pleasant for either of them.
But they had lived for so long. Even in that first century they had all changed so much. How would his brothers feel about seeing their old flame? Finn couldn't say.
"My mother used the doppelganger's blood to bound Niklaus' wolf half. I suppose using the blood of the doppelganger to undo her spell makes sense." Finn took another drink.
"So I meet Hayley in Mystic Falls. I like her Finn. She reminds me of me." A sly smile.
Finn couldn't help but chuckle at that. "If she is anything like you were as a human, then we need to watch her carefully."
"Hey I'm right here." Her indignant reply only drew another chuckled from him. Hayley didn't look to be offended, wearing an identical grin on her face.
"So why is she here?"
"Were here because of her. She said her family is from New Orleans and you need more exposure to the big cities. I know, I know. You prefer the countryside. But I can't spend the rest of eternity in small town America, Finn. Or any small town. I think even you would get bored of that eventually. So when Hayley called, I volunteered our services."
Finn couldn't help himself: he was amused. "Oh? And what exactly are our services?"
"Protection. Werewolves aren't very welcome in the Quarter. The vampires who run have a kill on site policy but you're a big bad Original vampire, virtually unkillable. Who would try and get Hayley with you standing around?"
"Are you implying that I will be doing all the work?"
"You know I love to go all the rounds. Anyone tries and I'll help. But your family's reputation that really proceeds you. That and you can just compel any vampires to forget about us and leave us alone in the future."
Well he couldn't argue with that.
Hayley caught his eye and gave him a smile. "Thank you. This means a lot to me."
"Of course." Finn could only offer a few words. If it wasn't for Sage, he wouldn't go along with this. He had no interest in guarding a werewolf that choice to find her way into the vampire's nest. But for Sage, he would do anything.
"Excuse me. I'm looking for Sophie." A smooth voice asked. Finn looked over, further down the counter. Finn had heard them enter but until now, he hadn't bothered to look at them. But the man was looking for Sage's friend Sophie.
Taking note of the man,Finn was surprised to see the other person with him. He hadn't seen Rebekah in the months since they separated. She looked back at him with shock; the same look mirrored on his face.
He wasn't the only one who noticed his sister. Sage was staring at Rebekah like she always had; a heated glare. Which his sister was returning.
"Rebekah-" Finn started, in a warning tone.
"Dear brother, it has been to long. You should have called if you were in town. No need to slum it."
Finn was fluent with this modern language. He had only learned English after he had been undagered. In the same way his family learned when they first made their home in the old world. They had painstakingly learned French before they hid themselves in the de Martell court. When they fled France for Italy, it had been Elijah that had stumbled on the secret. When feeding on a human, they could use their powers to touch their victims mind and dive deep into that mind, Learning the language and many other things.
He picked up on the slang and knew what she was implying. That Sage was beneath them, in a lower social class or otherwise unfit to be interacted with.
"Enough Rebekah. Who I choose to speak with no longer reflect on you or any of our other siblings."
"Well if you want to be around the strumpet, then who am I to stop you?" Finn glared at her back as she strutted past them.
"Damn," Hayley whistled. "Talk about queen bitch."
"That's Rebekah MIkaelson for you. When Finn first started to see me she wasn't happy."
"At that time, our social status demanded we keep *better* company. The Aristocracy of old Rome looked unfavorably with mingling with the peasants."
"Nine hundred years. Give or take a few. Finn's even older."
He chuckled when Hayley's mouth dropped.
"So you're Finn Mikaelson?" The man who came in with Rebekah approached, though his sister was curiously staying back.
"Yes." He turned to answer him, curiously noted that Hayley seemed to be making herself as small as possible. Their earlier conversation came to mind, about wolves not being allowed in the quarter.
"I'm Marcel. I've known your family for a very long time." He extended his hand.
"Then Marcel, you have my deepest sympathies." He grabbed the younger vampires hand in a firm shake.
Marcel gave his own laugh. "Well you and rest of your family are welcome here. Long as you follow the rules, then you ain't got nothing to worry about. That said, werewolves aren't welcome in the quarter."
Finn didn't miss Sage and Hayley tense up.
"If it was anyone but you then we'd have a problem here. But you're family and I don't want to do anything to cause any bad blood. Since its you and you didn't know, we'll over look it this one time. But the wolf has got to go."
Finn was surprised. He had never seen a vampire give him an order before and it was refreshing. Had this been before he was dagered, Finn would have reached a hand into his chest and ripped out his heart. But he wasn't with his family know, on the run from Mikael. with a upstart vampire trying to exert control over him.
He did not want to kill this vampire and despite Sage and Troy's glares, he didn't feel any particular ill will towards him.
So he decided to avoid the confrontation and steer the conversation away from that point. "Are we family?"
Finn was sure that he was not a Mikaelson. This vampire should be very glad for that fact.
"Ah," the Vampire turned back towards his sister and gave her a questioning look. "He was in a box until recently. We didn't have a chance before he left."
"I'm Marcel. We haven't met yet but we can say Klaus adopted me."
"Adoption? So you are not one of my sister paramour's, then?" The way she moved around this vampire, Marcel, reminded him of how she positioned herself around Alexander in those nights before the dagger. She moved her body so she would be closer to him. Subconsciously wanting to be near the object of her affection. Finn knew it well; that was how he acted around Sage.
"Well I wouldn't say paramour. I'd like to think this is a little more permanent than that."
A lover than. Someone she had strong feelings for and not another one of her men. Finn supposed she was very lucky Niklaus was not with her. As he recalled, their brother did not take kindly to the men in her life. He could empathize.
Or maybe this would be different. Niklaus he had never shown interest in adopting anyone. Would that affection be enough to stay his hand or would he rip them apart like he had before?
Well it wasn't his problem either way. Rebekah could live her own life, free from Niklaus or him or Kol or Elijah. She did not have to answer to any of her brother's. Nor did he.
"It is a pleasure to meet you Marcel."
"You to. I never did get to hear much about you. I've always wondered."
"I hope I did not disappoint."
"No." The chime of his phone rang out and Marcel had it out in a flash. "I got to cut this short. I'm in the middle of a thing. It was nice to actually meet you Finn. I hope you stick around. You seem a lot more well mannered than Kol."
It did not take a lot for someone to be better mannered than his youngest brother. The bar was fairly low.
"I'll be seeing you. Remember to get your wolf friend out of here." And before Finn could say anything else, Marcel was gone.
"I'm just saying you could have let me at him," Sage said, sliding out of the car before the engine was off. Hayley got out with him.
"That wouldn't have made the situation any better. We don't have to start a fight with everyone you don't like."
"He was threatening Hayley."
"Rebekah wouldn't just stand by why you murdered him."
"I know. That's where you come in. I can take him and you can stop her."
"I'd rather not fight with my sister at all."
"Does she feel the same way about you?"
Finn couldn't say. Given the fact that his family had left him in a box for nearly a thousand years, he wouldn't put it past them to not care so much.
"So this is the lead you have?" Sage asked Hayley, turning the conversation away from him, which he was thankful for. "Out here in the middle of nowhere."
"The bayou, yeah. This is where Professor Shane's lead. It cuts off after that."
The water stretched out before them, the smell encompassing everything else.
"Well then we better start looking"
AN:
Troy is not an OC. He was the man Sage turned in The Vampire Diaries.
I put in the mechanic about vampires learning languages in as an explanation for Finn knowing modern english. In the Originals TV show, the flashbacks are shown to be spoken in english for the convenience of the audience. When Finn was dagger, he wasn't speaking anything close to modern english.
Well I hoped you enjoyed this look into Finn's head. Finn and Sage are personally to of my favorite characters, that I wish we would have gotten to see more of personally.
