"Wow, I never knew the world could be so big!" The black and white spotted she-cat next to Dovepaw exclaimed. "Yes Pinepaw." Mewed her mentor, Graypelt. "But the world expands far beyond our territories." The six cats were padding side by side across the moor. The young apprentice's mentors were showing them the territory and it''s boundaries as their first day of training. "And here, is the territory of ThunderClan." Leafstar mewed, her clear voice rang out across the barren landscape. Patchpaw wrinkled his nose. "Who'd wanna live with all those trees?!" You can't even see the sky from under them!" He looked up, grateful to see fluffy clouds lazily floating through the blue sky and not stuck under dreadful oak trees. "Patchpaw." mewed the voice of Dustspider. "Be grateful to be a WindClan cat, for we have a gift from StarClan that no other clan has. The ability to run like the wind and live free under the sky." Bluestorm nodded and lept onto an outcropping rock. "Be proud of the WindClan blood running through your veins! We are closest to the sky! To StarClan!" He shouted to the sky, letting his fur ruffle in the breeze. Dovepaw gazed in awe. He looks like an ancient leader we he stands there, outlined against the skyline like that. she thought. A paw pressed firmly against her jaw, slowly pushing up. "Remember what i told you about the bugs!" The voice of Pinepaw purred close to her ear. Dovepaw pretended to choke, realizing her mouth must have been open. "i think i just swallowed one!" She mewed in a raspy voice. "Why don't you check for me?" She shoved her wide open mouth in Pinepaw's face. "Ewwww!" Pinepaw screeched, lightly shoving Dovepaw backwards. "i thought you were an apprentice, not a kit!" She purred standing up tall. Dovepaw shook out her pelt. "Oh, ill show you apprentice!" She lept up, trying to imitate the apprentices she'd seen playfighting in camp when she was younger, and desperately failing at it. She pounced at her friend, but fell short and fell to the ground at Pinepaw's paws with a loud oohmp. "Well, they need some work." Leafstar mewed to her deputy. They were sitting a few tail lengths off to the side watching the apprentices. He nodded with a gruff purr as Dustspider came over to sit with them "Your telling me." He mewed. They all sat watching them. "You guys!" Patchpaw mewed bounding over. "Were supposed to be touring our territory! Not... What ever you guys are doing." He stared strangely at Dovepaw sprawled out on the ground and Pinepaw's paws on her back. "Right.." Dovepaw said and got off the ground shaking her pelt. Pinepaw did the same. Patchpaw purred. "Come on!" He turned with a flick of his tail and walked back to the mentors. They padded on for a while, when When Dovepaw suddenly gagged. Dustspider must noticed, because he turned around purring. "I see you picked up the scent of ThunderClan!" He smiled. "So that's what that foul smell is." She dug her nose in her paws to hide the stench. Her friends sniffed the air too and let out a shriek on unison. "How can they even stand the smell of themselves?" Patchpaw groaned. "Well, there probably thinking the same about you!" Bluestorm purred as Leafstar sniffed the ground. "They must have been here recently." She mewed, "the scent is fresh." She padded over to a rather large gorse bush and left a scent marker. The other cats followed suit. Leafstar scented the air. She turned to the apprentices with a smile, and dashed off. They all took off across the moor. Dovepaw held her head up high, wind rushing between her ears. And she liked it. Her adrenaline began to rush as she ran side by side with her best friends, tails flowing out behind them. Dovepaw felt like she was flying, she pulled on front of her friends, but not because she was faster, but because they stopped running. She didn't notice. Dovepaw thought she heard them say something, but it was muffled by the wind. She tossed her head to the sky, she felt like she ruled the moor. Soon, she approached a hill. She put on an extra burst of speed as the top neared. She dashed over the ridge eyes closed, pretending she was the bird she's named for. She looked behind her and saw her friends far behind. "Ha!" She yowled closeing her eyes. The hill bregan to slope downwards. Steeper than she thought. Dovepaw opened her eyes, and soon widened them in shock as she realized that she was quickly running towards a river. She tried to stop, but she was going too fast. Momentum carried her forward as she tripped over a rock and face planted into the shallow part of the river that separated her clan's territory from RiverClan's. She pulled her sodden head from the river groaning, just to see a lean glossy-furred ginger tabby tom scoff at her. Dovepaw's friends and their mentors crested the ridge. "Dovepaw!" Pinepaw yowled as she dashed down the hill to Dovepaw's side. Patchpaw followed. "Please excuse my apprentice, Firestorm!" Leafstar yowled to the tom as she ran down the hill to the riverside. "In the future, how about you actually try to keep your clan's apprentices away from the boundary?" Emphasis on try. Green eyes blazing, he hissed and stalked off through the reeds. Dovepaw felt as if she wanted to drown instead of facing her friends and their mentors soaking wet. She trudged from the river and shook out her pelt as everyone approached. "Looks like you've had an unfortunate run in with the RiverClan deputy!" Dustspider purred. Dovepaw held her head down and shook each paw out in turn. Of course Firestorm's the deputy! She thought, her pelt burning with embarrassment. Leafstar padded over. "Dovepaw." She mewed sternly. "Not only did you disobey your mentor, you disobeyed your leader and embarrassed your clan. Punishment will come soon." She walked over to Bluestorm and they talked in hushed whispers looking over to Dovepaw every so often. Dovepaw sat down and looked up at the sky. Sundown was approaching. The sky was painted with beautiful shades of pink, red, orange, and yellow. This peace was soon disrupted as Pinepaw and Patchpaw sprinted over yowling. "Dovepaw! When Firestorm was here, we could smell the scent of fish!" Patchpaw announced. "Good job!" Dustspider said. Bluestorm and Leafstar walked over, theitr conversation about Dovepaw over. "You had your first scent of RiverClan!" Leafstar said. She said something else to them, but Dovepaw didn't listen. She padded back up the hill and looked at the sky. Feeling humiliated and cold, she sat down and looked at the sky. The stars were out now, as a young kit, Dovepaw would often leave the nursery after Hollyfrost went to sleep, just so she could look at the stars dance across the night sky. Tonight, as she looked at the sky, the stars seemed to move together. Dovepaw squinted, hoping she wasn't hallucinating from the cold. They seemed to be arranged in the shape of a bird. The star-speckled bird flew around for a few moments then appeared to fall. The stars broke apart and returned to their natural positions. She looked down the hill to see if anyone else noticed, but none did. Was I the only one who saw? Thought Dovepaw. She shivered, but suddenly, she felt warm like she was back in the nursery, wrapped around her queen again. She looked around but it was only her on the hill. "Dovepaw... A far away sounding voice whispered in her ear. Something else was said, but it was muffled as a large almost unnatural feeling gust of wind washed over the moor and it, along with the feeling, was gone.
