Lizzy looked around the room smiling as she placed a homemade card on the bedside table. Ciel would have to be woken up for his medicine soon and she wanted him to be happy. Pink paper hearts now decorated the room, streamers seemed to come from everywhere. Ciel was sure to be happy when he saw the work she did for him, she had gone so far as to have flowers brought it.
She looked at Ciel, unable to get over how adorable he was wrapped tightly in his blanket.
"I do hope you get better soon Ciel. It worries me to see you in bed this way, though you really are cute when you sleep." She whispered to the sleeping boy.
Ciel stirred slightly and slowly opened his eyes.
"He looked around at the sight, he wasn't surprised and perhaps it was his fever, but Ciel wasn't annoyed as he would be normally.
"Hello Ciel, how do you feel?" Lizzy asked quietly.
"Not much different, what's all that?" Lizzy smiled.
"I thought it would make you feel better if you saw something pretty in here rather than just the dreary old room."
"It's not dreary it's- alright, maybe just a touch." Ciel said looking around his room.
"Thank you Lizzy, that's very thoughtful."
"You really think so?" She asked hopefully.
"Yes, It's nice."
"I'm so happy you like it, look, I've made you a get well card too." Ciel sat up as Lizzy handed him the card. The young Earl yawned and began to read it. She had clearly put a lot of thought into it, as she did with every gift she had ever given him. A red heart surrounded by white lace had been placed on the front with the words 'Get Well' above it.
"It's nice, thank you." Lizzy sat down on the bed with him and put a hand to his forehead.
"Still have a fever, but you can get your medicine now." Lizzy stood up and reached over to get the medicine and some water.
"Here, you should take this." Ciel did as she asked. Once he had swallowed the pills, he sipped slowly from the cup before Lizzy took it and placed it back on the table.
"Ciel?" She asked sitting down once more.
"What is it?"
"I'm glad you're okay. "
"I'm glad you're here to help me be okay."
"Are you still hurting?"
"Not as much as I was."
"Good. Do you remember when we where little and you had a tummyache, I would come see you and rub your tummy, you would fall asleep." Lizzy giggled.
"Yes, I remember. You're a very good nurse, you always have been."
"Except the time we both had scarlet fever, I was the one who gave it to you, you were very brave, I remember that I would cry sometimes and you would tell me it was going to be okay. You were worse off than I was and then you caught that other one, I-I could have killed you." Ciel took Lizzy's hand.
"Maybe we were just meant to have it together, I don't think I would have lived through it if I hadn't had you Lizzy. You needed someone to help you stay calm, and I needed your help as well. Even if I had died, it wouldn't have been your fault, if you had known what yo had in the first place, I know you wouldn't have come over to play. Just as you say I looked after you, you did the same for me and we're both still here."
"How can you possibly think that way, you really could have, I didn't let you get much rest, I was always making you get up and stay with me."
"I remember that differently, you never asked me to come over to sit with you, I would hear you being upset and do it. At least until my mother would force me back to bed."
"It's a good thing Aunt Rachel couldn't catch it."
"Yes, but I think even if she could, she would have stayed with us."
"I think so too, she and Uncle Vincent loved you so much."
"They were wonderful parents." Ciel said fondly.
"If I could have given them back to you Ciel, even if I had to trade places with them, I would so you could be happy." Lizzy said earnestly.
"Lizzy, you know that I loved them very much, but if I lost you, that wouldn't make me happy,"
"Then why push me away, why can't we be close again?" Her green eyes peered pleadingly into his.
"Because- It's safer for you, for both of us. You know the kind of work I do, if someone should hurt you because you're close to me, I would never forgive myself, and on the other hand, I am- Lizzy, after what happened, I'm afraid to get close to anyone, It's not just you."
"So It's your way of protecting me?" Lizzy asked.
"That's right." Ciel visibly shivered and pulled the cover closer.
"Oh Ciel, is there anything I can do?" The earl shook his head. A strong wave of nausea took hold of him, Lizzy noticed and placed the bucket beside him. She then moved to his side and rubbed his back in a comforting motion.
"It's Okay Ciel, you'll feel better soon, just get all of it out." She encouraged. After Ciel had finished, Lizzy rang for Finny to take care of the bucket and Tanaka came in to help Ciel into a new set of clothes. Once Ciel was dressed and back in bed, Lizzy returned, this time she sat in the bed with him and pulled him close, resting his head on her shoulder and gently stroking his hair.
"Sorry." He said weakly.
"Don't be. Everything will be alright, you'll see, you just rest and let yourself get better." Lizzy felt him nod his head. After a moment, Ciel spoke softly.
"Thank you."
"For what?"
"Everything."
"You're welcome Ciel, get some sleep, I'll sit here as long as you want."
