Enjoy!
Chapter 3
"Holy moons, I shouldn't have eaten that last piece." Raven groaned, sitting up.
Kinkajou glanced over at her.
"Prey shouldn't be wasted. We must be thankful." Titan got to his paws.
Kinkajou stretched out her aching muscles and looked to the sky.
The full moon hung there casting a faint white glow.
"Perfect. We've wasted our time on yet another meal." Titan growled. "I suppose we'll have to spend another night here."
"Look to the bright side. At least we have each other." Kinkajou pointed out, pressing close to her father.
"But what if they leave?" Raven piped up.
Kinkajou angled her ears towards Raven. "I doubt they'll leave." She said though her voice didn't sound as hopeful.
Every hair on Kinkajou's pelt stood on end as she heard a shriek.
"Help!"
Titan was immediately alert and his eyes grew wide.
Raven's fur bristled.
Without anybody stopping her, Kinkajou charged toward the cry of help.
She skidded to a stop as she saw the large bulky shape of a bear.
Raven almost ran into her.
Kinkajou noticed two small cowering figures of pups almost hidden by the dense undergrowth.
"Fan out!" Titan barked.
He must've seen the pups too! Kinkajou thought as she felt her heart beating twice as fast.
She howled and got the bear's attention.
Now that she was closer she could distinguish the more detailed features of the bear.
Great. It's a grizzly. Kinkajou's ears flattened her lips were drawn back in a snarl.
Raven nipped at the bear's legs.
She took a step back as the bear reared up on its hind legs.
It let out a loud roar and Kinkajou felt her heart skip a beat.
Titan had sunk his teeth deep in the bear's flesh.
That'll have it distracted for now. Kinkajou raced towards the pups.
One was a dark ginger color while the other one was white as snow.
Both had wide blue terrified eyes.
As Kinkajou got closer, the ginger pup shrunk back.
"It's okay, I'm here to help." Kinkajou said softly but she couldn't control the fear in her voice as much as she wanted to.
"W-who are you?" The white pup asked in a small trembling voice.
"I'll explain things later when there isn't a giant grizzly to deal with but right now, I'm going to make sure you two get to safety." Kinkajou nudged the ginger pup out of the undergrowth.
The white pup let out a small whimper of protest as Kinkajou picked her up as gently as she could by the scruff.
The ginger pup stayed close to Kinkajou taking unsure hesitant steps.
Kinkajou made sure she and the pups were a far distance away from the bear. "Stay here." She ordered, placing the white pup gently in the ferns.
"Thank you." The ginger pup breathed, her eyes wide in gratitude.
Kinkajou nodded and bolted back to the grizzly as she heard the first howl of pain.
Titan laid on the ground, gasping for breath.
Kinkajou paused and caught her breath. "Are you okay?" She asked.
"Just winded." Titan wheezed, struggling to his paws.
Kinkajou turned back and noticed a long gash down the grizzly's side.
Raven howled and snapped at it, her eyes narrowed.
When will it ever give up? Kinkajou darted from side to side, trying to confuse the bear.
Raven sneaked back behind it and clawed up it's back.
The bear roared and flung Raven off.
Kinkajou didn't have time to realize what was happening before the grizzly spun around again and knocked her down.
The world went black and Kinkajou's eyes slowly closed.
"It's safe. Cynder just went to wake the next guard." Mynx whispered.
The three wolves made their way out of the temporary camp and were careful not to step on any leaves or twigs.
Axel and Thunder glanced at each other briefly before stepping paw in the dark woods.
It was oddly silent.
Mynx didn't seem to be bothered by it, but Thunder felt chills go up and down his spine.
"Do you have that weird feeling that we're being watched?" Axel asked, breaking the silence.
Mynx looked around them and sniffed the air.
"Yeah..." Thunder replied, feeling every hair on his pelt rise.
"Don't be scared." Mynx told them. "Whatever's watching, we can handle."
"I'm not scared!" Axel snapped.
"Just trying to make you feel better." Mynx shrugged.
Thunder had nothing to say. All he could think about was Raven.
Was she okay? He wondered.
"I think the rain might have washed away their scents." Mynx sighed.
Thunder flicked his ear and sniffed the bushes and shrubs around them.
His eyes grew wide as he found a tuft of familiar black fur. Raven!
"Come here." Thunder told them.
"What is it?" Axel asked, trotting over.
"I think I found a tuft of Raven's fur." Thunder's eyes glowed with hope.
Axel thought briefly. Could it be true the scouts had been here?
"Keep on searching. She might have been recently here or close by. Wherever she is, I'll bet a moon's worth of prey that Titan and Kinkajou are with her." Mynx barked.
All wolves started sniffing around.
Thunder wished his brother, Polo, was here. He was the best tracker in the pack. That was until he was killed by a stampede of elk.
"I found it!" Axel came running towards the two wolves.
"The scent trail?!" Thunder asked hopefully.
"Yes!" Axel nodded and circled around a large boulder.
"They've been here recently." Mynx observed.
"Let's hope it leads us to them." Axel said, already turning and following the scent trail and the faint pawprints in the dirt.
Thunder and Mynx glanced at each other and then ran after Axel.
