Once her siblings and herself got back from their hunting session, Rosalie went in the shower and, when she got out, she found Alice waiting for her at the door.
"Hey Alice, don't you have your own shower?
"Of course, I have my own shower and I just got out of it myself, but that's not what I'm here for."
"You know you're weird, right? What are you here for?"
"I'm here to find out when you're gonna go see Luna."
"I haven't yet decided to go. And even if I wanted to I have no idea where she lives."
"Edward and Carlisle know."
"And, even if I asked them nicely, I don't think they'd tell me."
"Why? Carlisle said she could stay, didn't he?"
"Yes, but it doesn't mean we can make friends with her."
"Hey," continued Rosalie "what's the smell?"
"The smell? Oh yeah, Esme's cooking"
"Who is she cooking for?"
"Oh, it's for Luna. She's cooking for Luna."
"For Luna? Are you behind it?"
"No, I swear I'm not, but, if she's cooking for Luna, it means someone's gonna have to bring it to her."
"Don't you think she plans to bring it herself?"
"When you were a human, did your mother never send you to bring cookies, cakes and stuff like that to any new neighbors?"
"I guess so, but we're not humans and neither is Luna."
"She eats human food, doesn't she?"
"It doesn't mean she'll accept anything coming from a vampire."
"We don't know that for sure, do we?"
"Anyways," continued Alice "I'll go see if Esme needs any help, are you coming with me?"
"No. I've got something I want to do." Answered Rosalie, exasperated.
"Perfect." Exclaimed Alice, turning around and dancing her way to the kitchen.
"I hate you weirdo." Murmured Rosalie, before walking away too.
"I heard you!"
Later that day, while Rosalie was working in the garage, her twin came in, looking like he'd just gone trough a tornado.
"You okay Jasper?"
"Kind of. It's terrible though."
"What is?"
"Luna. Alice sent me to track her down."
"She sent you to "track" her? Alone?"
"I was not alone and it was not tracking like a Tracker would."
"She went with you?"
"No. Emmett did."
"Emmett? Why? I could have come if you needed someone."
"Actually," started Emmett, coming out of his wife's blind spot "she said you wouldn't agree to go with him, so they asked me instead."
"So, you tracked her down together then. And did you discover anything?"
"She's been befriended by Jessica and her friends."
"Jessica? Is that the harpy in Alice's grade?"
"Yes. And she does not seem to like them very much."
"They're not all as bad as Jessica, aren't they?"
"Except for Lauren. She seemed okay with the others though."
"Is that all you two great detectives found out?"
"No. We followed her home but we lost her there when she went into the forest. We found her again about thirty minutes later, when she emerged from it with her school bag."
"Okay. Maybe she likes to do her homework in the forest or, maybe she went flower piking." Said Rosalie, trying to convince herself that it was nothing important.
"I don't think there is a lot of flowers at this time of the year."
"You're right. But she didn't go do her homework in the woods either, did she?" answered the blonde in a 'manner of fact' tone.
"No. She went to pick some stuff, but not flowers. More like roots and things like that."
"Well, she's always been into some pretty weird all-natural stuff. It must have got to do with that. I'll still talk to her about it, just to make sure she doesn't get into any trouble out there by herself."
"Alice said you'd want to do that"
"I know." Said Rosalie, remembering the conversation she'd had with the brunette earlier. "I'll go tell her."
The young woman did not have time to make it out of the garage before she was met by her mother and her sister in-law, who were both carrying three baskets of home made food.
"Hello Rosalie," greeted Esme, "would you like to help Alice bring these to your cousin to welcome her in Forks?"
"Hum, sure." Exhaled Rosalie "But why did you two make so much food?"
"Well, I did not plan on making so much, it just got a bit out of hand: It's been a while since I've cooked. At least it's not wasted."
"Just let me change and I'll be there. I'm driving!"
When they got at the foot of the stairs leading to Luna's front door, Rosalie stopped in front of Alice.
"Rosalie, I know you're stressing about what's going to happen, but everything is gonna be just fine."
"I'm not scared of what's going to happen, I'm afraid to learn what happened to her. I ever even thought it could happen."
"None of us thinks such a thing is possible until we are put in front of it. And you don't have to talk about what happened. She's probably just as afraid to find out what happened to you."
"But what if she doesn't want to see me?"
"If she didn't want to see you she wouldn't have stayed after Monday."
"But she stayed."
"Yes."
"Let's do this. It can't be that bad. Can it?"
"Exactly."
Rosalie then climbed up the stairs as fast as a human could and waited for sister in-law before ringing the bell. Three longs seconds later, Luna opened the door.
"Rosalie! What are you doing here? I didn't think I'd see you today."
"It's not sunny anymore, so I can come out. Alice also wanted to meet you."
"Well, come in, don't stand there in the cold, it would look weird."
"We brought you these." Said Rosalie, showing the baskets "Where do you want us to put them?"
"What are they?"
"Food."
"Hum." Hesitated Luna "You can put it on the kitchen counter."
"I hope you'll like it, our mother made it and it's been a while since she cooked."
"Your mother?"
"Carlisle's wife. We try to be as human-like as possible."
"So, you all live in a normal house and you have a 'normal' family?"
"Something like that."
"That's nice."
"Alice, what are you doing?" Asked Rosalie when she saw that Alice had started to put away the food while she was doing small talk with her cousin, "This is not your house! You can't just put away stuff where you think it goes!"
"That's exactly where Luna would have put it."
"I'm so sorry Luna, my sister in-law lacks basic relationship skills."
"It's quite alright actually, we seem to be much alike."
"I thought the same." Exclaimed Alice clapping her hands like a little girl, grabbing Luna's hands and starting to dance with the girl, who went along with it.
"Okay, you too are very strange together. You better be careful at school."
"Hey," continued Rosalie, "I've heard you've made friends with that Jessica girl and her friends."
"Made friends is a big word, I've only known them for about a day."
"You don't seem so sure about them."
"No. I like them. Angela's very nice and Jessica too. Those guys, Ben, Eric and Mike, they're not bad either."
"You didn't comment on Lauren."
"Well, you know, I'm not sure how someone didn't try to kill her yet."
"Me neither," added Alice "She's got to be the most hypocritical person in this state."
"Is she really that bad?"
"Yes. She's always talking in the backs of everyone, even those she calls friends."
"I'm pretty sure I was exactly like that as a kid."
"No, you weren't. I've known that girl for less than twenty-four hours and she's way too terrible for you to be anywhere near her."
"But," continued Luna a second later, "how did you find out about that? I thought you guys didn't mix with others?"
"We don't, but when we want to know something, we've got ways of learning it."
"So, you sent someone to check on me." Realised Luna.
"Actually, Alice sent her husband and mine to follow you."
"Okay. Where they alone? Cause I felt like I was being followed by someone all day long, but once I got back home I went to take a walk in the woods and I could feel something else stalking me."
"Well," started Alice, looking concerned, "Jasper and Emmett did not follow you in the woods once you got back here, they lost you for half an hour at that point. They only saw you again when you came out."
"What did you feel exactly in the woods?" Wondered Rosalie, concerned.
"I'm not sure. I felt like someone was going to kill me if I'd set foot in the wrong place."
"It must have been a dog."
"A dog? Dogs don't usually make us feel that way."
"She's doesn't mean actual dogs, she's talking about the shifters. On the nearest reservation, La Push, live the Quileutes and they have a pack of wolf-shifters whose sole reason to be is to protect their land against vampires. Our coven has a treaty with them: If we kill someone in Forks, they'll reveal our existence, but as long as we don't set foot on their territory or hurt any human in the area, we are fine."
"Okay. Well I'll be careful next time I take a walk in the woods."
"You shouldn't go in the woods alone until you know where you're not allowed."
"They're that dangerous?"
"They're very territorial, especially the new generation. They won't hesitate to hurt you if they think you're one of us."
"Alright. But what do you mean by 'the new generation'? How long have you been here?"
"We've been here for about two years, but we came here before, a little bit after World War Two, before we met Alice and Jasper. That's when we made the treaty. What about you? Have you been here before?"
"No. Until about thirty years ago, I stayed mostly in the U.K. Then, I started to go around the world, visiting every place I could."
"You had companions until thirty years ago?"
"Kind of. I didn't have companions like in a coven or anything like that, but I could live out in the open. I didn't have to hide all the time and be afraid that I might not make it home if I went outside."
"What happened?"
"We had a fallout."
"A fallout?"
"They accused me of murdering someone. It took them five years to finally figure out that I had nothing to do with it, but the damage was done. The few friends that had stayed by my side almost had prices on their heads and there were still lots of people who would just not accept my innocence so, after ten years, I staged my destruction and disappeared. I first went in Asia, for fifteen years, then I moved to Africa for five years and, in '95 I moved to South America. I finally ended up in the states about five years ago."
"You didn't come back here until now?"
"I came back, but not permanently until 2000."
"Did you go back in the U.K. at all? Or in Europe?"
"I didn't go back to the U.K., but I did go back in Europe though I never spent more than a few days outside of Russia or, back then, USSR."
"Why?"
"Europe is way too near to the U.K. It's still too dangerous."
"But the people that knew you back when you were a human, they're what, 90 years old? They would hardly remember you."
"They're no the ones I'm afraid of. The ones that want my head are younger. Their parents are the ones that are 90 years old and these people might live much older than 100. At 90, they're still active and strong."
"What kind of humans are you talking about? Life expectancy in occident is bellow 100."
"Who says I'm talking about regular humans?"
"What do you mean?"
"I mean that the people I am afraid of are not regular humans like the ones at Forks High."
"…"
"What did your mother cook?" Exclaimed Luna turning away from her cousin, seizing the opportunity to change the subject. "Is there anything I could have for diner?"
"She made lasagna," answered Alice, handing the witch a plate "I hope I didn't heat it too much."
"No. It's just the right temperature."
"Well, we'll leave you to your diner then." Said Rosalie, getting up "I'll see you at school."
"I didn't mean to chase you: I'm just really hungry."
"I understand, but we really have to go. We'll see you tomorrow." Answered Rosalie, troubled by what her cousin had said.
"Okay then. Bye."
