AN: Forgot to put this up. Eep!
Rachel beamed at her phone. Finn had just confirmed that Burt and Carole were out for the night, and he and Kurt were left alone to do almost anything they wanted during the sleepover. She knew for certain that Finn would invite the boys over to play gory games like Halo and Mass Effect (she only knew that they were excessively bloody thanks to their relationship), but Kurt was another matter. However, she figured that he was still worried about the NYADA audition and whether to use Music of the Night – Blaine had been filling her in on their numerous New York-based conversations after their breakup – so he was probably planning to rehearse as much as he could without disturbing anyone. Now that Blaine had decided to be the better man, so to speak, he had put together a box containing a Phantom mask and some candles so he could help Kurt once things were back to normal.
Since the girls were on board with her and Blaine serenading Kurt back into his arms, they had also agreed to back them up and harmonize for them (Blaine had decided that she should have a part in a show of immense gratitude). Sure, they were a bit chillier when she had come back and announced that Blaine was coming back to the choir room, but it was probably because they were upset that the good news had taken so long. She got them to warm up again by reminding them of how Blaine had stepped in and saved Kurt when he had to go to Dalton to spy on the competition. When Blaine had gotten to the choir room and stood up to speak to the girls himself, he'd also given them a heartfelt speech about Kurt being his soulmate and confided his fears of losing him to New York during his senior year. His eyes were filled to the brim with tears when he was done, and Tina, Mercedes, and Sugar immediately stood up to give him hugs and tissues.
Quinn had been considerably harder to crack. Even though she'd defied Santana and suggested that Blaine serenade Kurt at his house, she still looked somewhat bored during both speeches. She didn't even applaud them for their reasons why Kurt should just swallow his pride! Of course, there was no time or place for Rachel to call Quinn out on her rude behavior without having to push the plan back (which would be totally unfair to Blaine, especially after all the hard work he put into choosing his song), so she decided to set the confrontation for after all was said and done.
Her thoughts were interrupted by another buzz from her phone. Tina's text announced Blaine's and the girls' arrival, and sure enough, they stepped out of a minivan one by one. Mercedes opted to unfold Quinn's wheelchair and help her ease into it before they all headed to Rachel's location. She glanced at Quinn out of the corner of her eye before speaking up.
"All right, let's go over our plan one more time. I will go to the door first since Finn is expecting me to stay for a little while until the other boys arrive. There will be a slight delay in between my arrival and the beginning of Blaine's song in order to make sure Kurt's completely comfortable with my presence. Once I feel it's appropriate, I'll send you a signal to get ready and start Blaine's song. When it's over, you will applaud and give him the roses that should be in the car. Blaine, you'll choose that moment to give a heartfelt speech to Kurt and tell him you accept him, mistakes and all, and make him see that you've decided to put Chandler in the past so you two can look at your future."
At Blaine's nod, Rachel spun on her heel and walked up to the Hudson-Hummels' door and knocked three times.
Kurt's shoulders felt stiff. He knew it was because Quinn hadn't sent him anything else concerning Blaine's plan. Even though Finn had reassured him that she'd have something up her sleeve, he could no longer be sure that that was the case. However, the doubt was bound to eat at him until he lashed out, and he didn't want to do that without being absolutely sure that a defection had taken place. Every time he had checked his phone, there was more than one message from Blaine. Only one had been opened, and it read:
Kurt, I love you, but we can't stay angry like this. You're the one who started flirting with another guy behind my back. Why are you acting like I'm the bad guy all of a sudden? Please call me or text me so we can work things out.
After he felt his blood stop boiling, Kurt had decided to save this message as a reminder to himself of how Blaine treated the whole situation. The performance during Whitney week had been just a small piece of what he felt was righteous anger at Kurt's betrayal. All throughout the rest of the week, he had told the other members of New Directions who asked him what Kurt had done. According to Quinn, Rachel had also added her two cents to the situation. The conversation where Kurt had stupidly decided that he could trust her had apparently twisted in order to make Blaine's story more plausible.
"I told him this would turn out badly." There was no way he couldn't have heard her even when she whispered to some of the girls across the choir room. "He just brushed me off."
Kurt had done his best to ignore the stares after Rachel was done talking. Not that that was hard to do; no one seemed to want to ask him for his side of what had happened between him and Blaine. At first the idea of losing all of his friends to his boyfriend had broken his heart, but as he thought more about the situation, he just became angrier at everyone who had turned against him. He knew that it was bound to boil over once the guys were here to have a first-person shooting marathon.
Three sharp knocks on the door made him stand up straight. He did not want to talk to Rachel right now, but Finn was in the bathroom at the moment. He had no choice. With a plastered-on smile on his face, he made his way to the door and wrenched it open.
"Hi, Kurt!" Rachel's tone was too bright. It was obvious that she was up to something. He was not about to mention it to her, though. No way. He just kept the fake smile on his face and gestured for her to come inside.
"Just so you know, I talked to Blaine on the phone last night," she said as she made her way right to the kitchen. "He sounded so depressed, especially when he was telling me how you broke up with him for good."
Kurt groaned and pinched the bridge of his nose. Blaine had only cornered him once since this whole thing started. He'd apparently followed Finn home from school and waited for Kurt to get there. The result was that Kurt came home to Blaine blocking the door.
"Now you're going to have to listen to me." His tone was as reminiscent of a kicked puppy as he could muster. It took all of Kurt's energy to not roll his eyes before Blaine finished talking.
"I just thought you should know how badly you're breaking my heart with this cold-shoulder thing. I can't eat, or think, or do my homework knowing that you're probably off having coffee dates with Chandler now. And if you would at least tell me there's nothing between you guys, I'd be a little calmer." He held up a hand when Kurt opened his mouth.
"Let me finish. Maybe I went too far with that song, but you chose to avoid me instead of trying to work things out. I let it slide the first few days because I thought you needed time to cool off, but this is too much. So here I am."
"Yes. Here you are." Kurt scoffed. "Did you even stop to think about what It's not Right, But It's Okay means? It's a break-up song! How else did you think I was supposed to take it? And tell you there's nothing between me and Chandler? I already did! You're the one who didn't listen to me! And you tried to make yourself look better by mentioning that you didn't have feelings for Sebastian even when you kept contact with him! Hell, you started talking to him behind my back, too! Or did you forget that I met him while you were on a coffee date with him?"
"Look, I already explained that it was all –"
"Family friendly, I know. But I already explained that I felt overshadowed by your status as McKinley's 'alpha-gay'. That just went in one ear and right out the other, didn't it?"
Blaine finally stepped away from the door. This gave Kurt ample the chance to push past him. Just as he opened the door and thought he could go inside without a hitch, Blaine caught his arm.
"You know what? I've had enough of this conversation. I'm not breaking up yet, but I need more time to think about us." With that, Kurt pulled free of Blaine's grasp and entered the house, slamming the door in the process.
When Kurt snapped out of the flashback, it was thanks to his phone buzzing. Quinn had only sent one line, but it was more helpful than she seemed to realize.
Teenage Dream by Katy Perry.
Kurt rolled his eyes. Of course Blaine would try to bring up their past happiness in order to win him back. However, he couldn't dwell long. The music began to play.
