Chapter Four: Awakening

Previously: Then, all of a sudden, Kim felt Ron squeeze her hand in a tight grip. And he didn't let go.

Middleton Hospital in Middleton, Colorado:

Dark. Everything was dark. And silent. He couldn't see anything. He couldn't hear anything. But he could feel. Sort of... There was something applying pressure to his hand. Slowly, he was beginning to hear something in the distance. It sounded like a low beeping. After beginning to hear the beeping, it wasn't long before he heard a quiet, female voice.

"Ron. Ron, listen, it's me. If you can hear me, you need to wake up, okay," the voice asked, "You need to open your eyes."

He knew that voice. Where did he know that voice? He thought about it for awhile before realization hit him. That voice! It belonged to Kim; his girlfriend. Ron mustered up all the strength that he had to crack his eyes open just barely enough to see a blurry Kim sitting on the edge of his hospital bed holding his hand. He wasn't sure where he was or exactly what was going on. He blinked a couple of times before he opened his eyes a little more. He couldn't be certain, but he thought he could see that Kim had a lone tear streaming down her cheek ~ which could only mean that something bad must of happened since she hardly ever cried.

He breathed out a, "Hey," and before he knew it, she was on top of him to give him the biggest hug that he had ever received. Although, she was, oddly enough, avoiding his midsection.

"You woke up," Kim whispered into Ron's ear.

"Yeah, I did... at least, I think I did. What exactly did I wake up from though," Ron asked not remembering anything that had happened since leaving for the mission.

"Ron," Kim paused to take a deep breath and get her emotions under control," you've been in a coma for a few days. You got shot by Drakken. Twice. You stepped in between him and me, you idiot. You stopped him from shooting me. Is this ringing any bells?"

And that's when it hit him. He began to remember everything. He remembered seeing the gleam of the gun, stepping in front of Drakken, the pain that followed, and what he thought would be his last words to Kim. Kim! He remembered the look on her face. How scared and worried she was.

"Ron? Hello? Earth to Ron. Are you there," Kim asked beginning to worry why Ron was staring off into space like he did before he passed out in Drakken's lair.

"Huh," Ron shook his head a little, clearing his mind of the memories, "Oh yeah, sorry KP. I was just um… It just all came back…"

"Hey, it's okay. You're safe now. You're going to heal and get better and we're going to get Drakken, Shego, and Monkey Fist into custody."

"Yeah, it's just the gun and… what I thought was going to be my last words… ever, to you."

Kim gave a sad smile.

Ron tenderly caressed Kim's cheek, "You know, I meant every word I said, right?"

Kim looked distantly down at the floor, caught up in her thoughts. After a moment of silence, Kim quietly whispered, "You know you scared me back there. What were you thinking? Who does that? Who just goes and jumps in front of a loaded gun." As Kim's voice began to waiver, she took a deep, calming breath before continuing, "I thought I was saying my last words to you too. And I meant every one of them too."

"I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to scare you like that. I was just trying to protect my one in a million, my bon diggity girlfriend," Ron said trying to cheer her up a little.

"Hey, promise me something, 'kay?"

"Sure, anything, just name it."

"Promise me that you won't ever do that again. I don't ever want to come that close to losing you again. I... just can't."

"Kim, as long as I live, I can't promise that. I love you and I don't want anything to ever hurt you and if I know that I can somehow stop something from causing you pain, even if it means that I'm going to have to take that pain myself, then I will. I'm sorry, but I just can't promise you that I will stand by and let you get hurt."

"You know that losing you would be the worst pain that I could ever go through, right," Kim countered.

"Then, I'll just have to keep waking up from my comas, I guess. Right?

Ron waggled his eyebrows and Kim smirked at him.

"Have I ever told you that your my hero?"

"I thought your dad was your hero."

"Yeah he is, but you're my biggest hero."

Green Lantern Corps. Headquarters on Planet Oa:

"We have been watching this earthling for awhile now. I think our choice is most definitely clear by this point," one Guardian said.

"Agreed," another one said.

"If we all can come to terms with this, then he shall become the next Green Lantern and the new Guardian of Earth," a third Guardian chimed in.

"We must send one of us with the ring to him to explain his new duties and the power of the ring," another Guardian said.

"I shall volunteer to go since I am the most familiar with this particular sector," Ganthet, one of the Guardians, replied.

"All if favor of this, say I," announced the first Guardian.

It was an unanimous vote and Ganthet left to go prepare for his journey to Earth.
