Chapter 3
Sasuke remained silent and Sakura mentally thanked him for that. Everyone who knew about her father's death would respond with the usual 'I'm sorry' and she didn't want people feeling sorry for her. Not for something that was her fault anyway. It would increase the guilt that was building in the pit of her stomach.
After a few seconds, Sasuke opened his mouth and asked the obvious question, "How did he die?"
Before answering it, Sakura told him to turn on the next street for a shortcut to her house. She also began tapping her fingertips against her jean-clad thighs, a habit she had grown into when she was nervous. It also used to be done by her father when they were stuck in sticky situations at home.
She remembered the time, when she was around the age of six, they had agreed to make pancakes while Sakura's mother was still asleep that Saturday morning. Batter and flour ended up scattered on the tiled floor, egg yolk was slowly dripping off the kitchen counter, and the sink was piled to the top with the various dishes they had gotten dirty in their attempt to make a calm breakfast morning.
Of course, when her mother found them both in the corner to hide themselves from a scolding, her father grew nervous and began tapping his fingers against his thighs before trying to explain the situation.
Sakura smiled at the memory, but a frown replaced it as she thought about the answer to Sasuke's question, "He was coming to a late-night game of mine when I was fourteen. Going into an intersection a drunk driver couldn't read the damn stop sign."
She let out a big sigh, and Sasuke could hear the tremble that came with it.
A few minutes later of silence, they finally reached Sakura's house. It was very serene-looking with the various flowers surrounding the bottom edge of the white, 2-story house. Sasuke could tell in the dim evening light that they were planted with great care. The house looked wide and spacious, not compared to his own home, and only the lights in the first floor were shining through the windows.
She went to grip the handle of the car to make her way out. Sakura had just taken hold of it when a hand on her shoulder had made her stop in her tracks.
Sasuke mentally slapped himself. Why had he stopped her in the first place? He wasn't much of a person to comfort people, so he didn't know what to say to her as she turned to face him, expecting some phrase to come out of his mouth. Damn it, he should've just let her go. Then he wouldn't have said what had just slipped out, "Have coffee with me tomorrow. Starbucks?"
What in the world has gotten into me?, thought Sasuke.
"Okay, what time?" asks Sakura, confused with his offer. Was it gonna be some kind of date?
"Right after school. It's Friday, so no practice. Meet me next to Kakashi's classroom," he responds, letting go of his grip on her shoulder. She nodded, and without another word, slipped out of the car and practically ran to her house.
Sasuke smirked. *Cue noROSAno's faint here* XD
He knew he had some kind of attraction for the pink-haired girl, but as a friend, right?. Even before they finally acknowledged each other at soccer tryouts. After the past 2 years of high school that he knew her, and he decided to do something about it their senior year? Out of all times.
Stupid Sasuke (but it's okay, you're still sexy).
Sasuke had first noticed her in the middle of his sophomore year in this high school. He was dating Karin at the time (he didn't know what he was thinking, really). He was walking down the hallway after the 1st period bell rang, his red-haired girlfriend latched onto his arm, when he saw a head of pink hair in the crowd. Sasuke figured she was a newbie; he would of caught on to someone with cotton candy hair in the beginning of the school year.
"Ugh, you see that girl with the pink hair, Sasuke-kun?" asked Karin, snorting in disapproval. He nodded, as they walked past her.
Damn, he caught only a glance of her eyes. She was short, of course. They were a beautiful shade of green, actually, the shade of his shirt he was wearing. What a coincidence. "Well, her name is Sakura Haruno. Total nobody, if you ask me, except for that stupid hair color," continues Karin, rolling her glasses-clad eyes, "Ferseriously, who dies their hair pink?"
The girl rambled on; he wasn't in the mood for listening. Sasuke dropped off Karin at her class and then walked to his locker, when he saw her again.
Right next to his locker. His locker.
She was taking out books and Sasuke took the chance to give her a once-over. It was most definitely nice.
Black converse (bright green 'stand out' laces)
Gray skinnies (nice pair of legs)
An imprint of a phone in her back pocket (round perky bottom)
Fitting black v-neck shirt (slim hourglass figure, perfect chest size; not too big or small)
But her face was covered by a curtain of long hair (damn it)
Most definitely nice.
It wasn't until he actually reached his locker to her left that she tucked her hair behind her ear, revealing her gorgeous face.
Of course, there were her eyes (vibrant color)
Her dainty nose and high cheekbones (cute)
Full perfectly sculpted lips (covered lightly in red lipstick)
And she was most likely a fan of Javier Hernandez, a former Mexico soccer player who joined Manchester United a few weeks ago, when he recognized the poster of him taped to the inside of her locker door. Yeah, she was, with that big ol' heart sticker on the side of his head. Hn.
She was pretty much perfect. That is, until he found out about her fiery temper. His best friend, Naruto Uzumaki, found out the hard way: teasing her of her rather large forehead. I guess a good punch to the face taught him a lesson from Sakura Haruno. Ha.
They had most of the same classes, yet alphabetical order always kept them relatively far apart. They never talked, but Sasuke would catch her every once in awhile looking at him. She only acknowledged him in the morning at their lockers, but other than that…nothing.
And then came soccer tryouts. Better late than never.
As soon as Sakura shut the house door behind her, Sasuke made a U-turn and most definitely didn't stop thinking about the shy, yet somewhat feisty, classmate/soccer teammate.
The next day at school was just like any other day. Sakura was in the middle of the classroom with Sasuke in the back, stuck with the loud-mouthed blonde (he wondered how Naruto managed to keep up in the honors classes). Every few minutes or so, he would sneak glances at the back of her head. And once, he even caught her looking back at him. Her beautiful eyes dilated before she turned back in embarrassment.
During class change, a small greeting was exchanged. A simple 'hey' down the hallway. Yet Sasuke couldn't stop the tightness in his chest when she flashed him a small smile.
Whoa, whoa, wait a minute.
When did this feeling come up? thought Sasuke. Sure, Sakura Haruno was gorgeous. She was nice and intelligent. And she had spectacular skills on the soccer field. But when did he ever consider liking Sakura as more than a friend when he barely knew the girl?
He shook his head as he entered his English class and sat down in the back of the room, like always, to avoid any conversation and his crazy fan girls.
However, he couldn't stop the groan coming out of his mouth when he saw Karin nearing his desk. He was glad he had dumped her at the end of their sophomore year. Not because of Sakura (ahem, that's a lie XD) but because he had caught her having sex with the captain of the baseball team, some white-haired dude named Suigetsu. It happened at his friend's beach house party. He went to the upstairs bathroom to take a leak when he opened the door and saw them in the middle of their, uh, dirty deed. Ugh, what a whore.
But here she was again, begging for his attention by leaning over his desk to give him a view of her cleavage from her ample chest. "Hey sexy," purred Karin, giving him a wink, "When's your first soccer game? I might come and watch you score, babydoll."
Sasuke leaned back against his chair and crossed his arms, trying his best to get away from the rabid girl. Karin only leaned closer.
"Don't you want me to cheer you on, Sasuke-kun? I could make a great cheerleader," she gave a coy smile and adjusted her glasses that were resting on her upturned nose.
"My first game is also on the day of the baseball team's first game. I'm sure you'd rather watch Suigetsu's game than mine, no?"
Sasuke wasn't jealous, he was just frustrated that after all this time of hints and clues, Karin still had no idea that she and him were over the day she cheated. Goodness gracious, she had such a thick skull under those fake extensions. "Oh, Sasuke-kun, you're still jealous over that one little incident? Don't worry, it was just a one-time thing. It'll never happen again, you know?" she pleaded, trying her best to lure him in.
He looked at her face and glared right into her red eyes. "Yeah, I know. It was a one-time thing, just like our relationship. Don't think it'll happen again," he snapped, and the red-haired student flinched when he threw her own words back at her. She gave an angry pout at him and turned around to sit down at her desk in the front. "Don't think it's over between us, Sasuke-kun. You're still mine," murmured Karin under her breath as the teacher called the class to order.
Sasuke finally gave a sigh of relief when the bell rang, signaling first lunch. Damn, he was really in the mood for a tomato. His classroom was one of the closest to the commons area, so he was one of the few people to make it to the front of the line for the salad bar.
Actually, he wasn't one for salads, but he took most of the tomatoes from the ingredients. Nobody really argued with him, since he was the most popular and richest student at Konoha Leaf High School. They ignored it and said nothing, unless they wanted to face his death glare.
(oooh, scary XD).
He was right in the middle of filling his bowl with the red fruit when someone tapped his shoulder. Sasuke turned to find a rather annoying pink-haired girl, smirking at him. Hm, she almost worked that smirk like he did.
Almost.
"You know, Uchiha, other people like tomatoes too. Why don't you try saving some for the rest of us,huh?" she teased, snatching the tongs out of his hand and picking tomatoes for her salad bowl.
What the hell?
When had someone ever done that before? Never, that's what.
Until now, that is. Ha.
"You're different, Haruno," says Sasuke, grasping the tongs when Sakura gave them back. She smiled that smile again, "I shall take that as a compliment, Uchiha. So thanks!" Sasuke looked down, hoping his rather long bangs would hopefully cover up the stupid blush that had crawled onto his cheeks. He took a deep breath and continued picking at the vegetables in the salad bar, hoping no one had caught on to that previous moment of embarrassment. Or whatever the heck it was.
He was at the cash register at the same time as Sakura and he offered to pay for her lunch without thinking. She thanked him with a nod of her head. "Here you go sweetheart," said the lunch lady, giving him back the change from a five-dollar bill. He nodded curtly before heading off to his usual lunch table with his best friend.
"You honestly sit inside to eat lunch with all this ruckus?" asks a familiar voice from beside him. "Where else would I eat, Haruno?" he questions back, stopping in the middle of the lunchroom. He noticed almost everyone in the commons had turned in their direction, yet the conversations kept going.
Probably gossip between Sakura and he. Of course. People in this high school always assumed things by appearance.
"How about you join me outside? It's nice weather today anyway," she asks, already turning towards the doors leading out the open air where more students were already eating their lunch. Sending a glare to the students inside, signaling to get back to their own lunches, Sasuke obligingly follows her to the field where students could sit on wooden or metal benches to eat their lunch.
Once he sat down across from Sakura on a metal bench (oh, it was cold against his butt XD), he began stabbing the tomatoes and placing them in his mouth.
Sakura watched him as he ate the tomatoes in his bowl. Some sort of fetish, she supposed. She also took the time, as she ate her food, to check him out. Sasuke Uchiha is a good-looking guy. The hottest boy in her eyes, actually. And it's hard for any other girl to deny it.
His bed-head hair was really sexy looking.
He looked dashing in his regular school appropriate clothes; consisting of a sky blue polo, light wash jeans (not too tight or baggy), and white pumas. His body was amazing (not that she would know what his naked form looks like, psh XD). Toned arms, long legs, lean and slender torso (yeah, so she saw him shirtless before after a soccer game last year). Oh, and then came his face. Full lips, aristocratic nose, and high cheekbones. His eyes were also mesmerizing, but they held nothing. No emotion, as Sakura would put it when she saw him on her first day at this school.
From that day on, she always wondered what went wrong in his life. When she had befriended Naruto Uzumaki in her Math class her sophomore year, she had asked him if he knew him. Surprisingly to her, Naruto was actually Sasuke's best friend since childhood.
She had also asked if something tragic had ever happened in his life. Naruto solemnly replied with a yes, but did not go into further detail. Sakura didn't ask him about it again from then on. She knew she didn't like when people persisted about knowing of her father's death (she had told Naruto but made him promise to not tell anyone else), so she assumed that Sasuke didn't want anyone else knowing about whatever happened with him.
It would only hurt more, wouldn't it? Her heart answered with a yes.
Tomatoes: fruit or vegetable? haha XD
