Several weeks had passed after the relapse of the cicada incident. The words of Himawari were stuck in Sakurako's head.
"See how lively it is? It doesn't let its own weakness stop it from doing what it loves. It has a broken wing, but the cicada still sings. Sometime, with a little help, it can fly again too."
What the hell was that supposed to mean? Sakurako tapped her pen on the desk, as she sat staring blankly at a report she was supposed to be reading and underlining. She began to chew on the end of the pen as she went into deeper thought. I'm a freaking psychology major and even this is stumping me.
"Sakurako?" Himawari's voice lightly called out, as she stood at the entrance of Sakurako's room. Sakurako slightly jumped, and dropped her pen. She turned herself in her seat to face Himawari, and gave her a "what do you want" kind of look.
"I made dinner, well enough for two and a bit of leftovers. I was wondering if you wanted some." Himawari gestured towards their kitchen/dining area. "It's all right if you don't want to eat with me. I can leave it simmering for you, or if you'd like I can just put it away and you can warm it up yourself later on."
Ahh, Himawari's cooking. I haven't tasted her cooking in forever. My mouth is starting to water just thinking of it. Gahh! I can't let her know I'm actually excited about this.
Sakurako gathered herself calmly, stood up, and nodded. "I'll eat with you. It'd be rude not too." That's right, remember your manner Sakurako. Be thankful. That doesn't mean you have to go on liking her. It's just a nice gesture. That's it.
"Oh?" Himawari seemed to be surprised at the fact that Sakurako was going to join her, seeing as Sakurako had been doing her best to avoid her since the cicada talk.
Himawari thought it might have been a bit much to say to Sakurako. She just wanted Sakurako to let her know that she would be there regardless of their status. If anything, what Himawari meant was that she was trying to rekindle what they once had, and who Sakurako once was. Five years is a long time for someone to take time and to change, but trying to get them back to who they once were was no easy task.
Sakurako sat down across from where Himawari would sit. Of course, it was naturally for Sakurako to wait and be served by Himawari. Even if it has been that long of time since they've last been together, Sakurako subconsciously sat down, and stared at Himawari.
~FLASHBACK~
Week two.
"Himawariiiii~" Sakurako cried out as they both walked towards their houses.
"What is it now?" Himawari replied calmly, yet she sounded a tad bit annoyed. Just hours earlier at school, Sakurako was being a complete nuisance. (When is she not?) As Sakurako had constantly complained to and at Himawari at the slightest task that she partook of. It was a miracle that Himawari hadn't burst out in her normal fits of anger against Sakurako. She just let it all sink in. I can't fight back. I'll let her win. Make her feel good. This month is all about her. Remember that and don't lose yourself.
"Weeelll, you've been super quiet and…" Sakurako's stomach grumbled and her original sentence seemed to trail off into the sound of her stomach. "Oooh! I know what I want next, I want a fantastic feast!"
Is that it? Sounds simple enough.
Just then Sakurako added, "For every day this week! I want something different for dinner and dessert!"
Oh.
"Sakurako, isn't that a little much?"
"Aww, Himawari, you said this would be this best month ever, and this is what I want to make it great! Did you lie to me you boobed freak?!" Sakurako attempted to slap Himawari's breast, but Himawari read the act and quickly grabbed her hand as she was about to hit.
"No, I didn't lie. I'll do it." She let go of Sakurako's hand and sighed.
"Yayyy yayy" Sakurako hopped around and danced around happily.
Minutes later the girls arrived at Himawari's house. Sakurako took off her shoes and backpack and plopped them down at the doorway. Himawari did about the same, but took her backpack to her room.
Sakurako sat down at the dinner table and waited for Himawari to return to the kitchen. As she entered the kitchen, Sakurako couldn't help but ask, "Where's Kaeda? She would of normally greeted us by now."
Himawari washed her hands at the sink and begun preparations for the 'feast' as she replied, "She's at a friends' house, I think she said she was going to sleep over."
"I guess it's just you and me ya' big-breasted monster, now don't get any wise ideas to betray me with those things or yer gonna regret it!" she laughed and all Himawari did was hit her over the head with a wooden spoon she had grabbed.
"Owww…" Sakurako rubbed her head, "At least you're feeling better…" she mumbled.
"W-what?" Himawari heard her little comment.
"Well, you weren't putting up a fight at all today. I mean, it's not like I was worried or anything, you were just trying to fool me weren't you? You evil tit-scum!" she seemed to be fuming now. "Hmph! At least you have to make me this nice dinner in return for your evilness!" she turned away, her arms crossed.
She was worried about me? No, no. I have to remain normal by her standards. I can't be upset. She noticed, and that can't happen again. I just want her to be happy.
It took Himawari about an hour to cook the 'feast' for Sakurako. Luckily she had all the ingredients, and was able to make a beef curry and for dessert, some taiyaki.
She quietly served Sakurako, and then herself. Sakurako immediately dug in and let out a "awwwwhh, this is amazing!' with her mouth still full of curry.
"Sakurako! Don't talk with your mouth full!" she said as she scooped up another spoonful.
"Himawari! You always cook the best curry, it's my favorite. Are you gonna make this for feast every day?" she said as she placed another spoonful in her mouth.
"Ahh, if that's what you'd like, I guess it can be done…" although Curry every day for the next week can be tiring…
"Yeah! Himawari, I guess you really aren't all that bad!" she smiled and Himawari couldn't help but smirk back.
As long as you're happy, I'm happy. If only I could tell you everything.
~END FLASHBACK~
Naturally at this point, Himawari knew to serve the both of them. She was glad to see that some things for Sakurako haven't changed.
"So, what did you cook?" Sakurako said quietly, trying to make conversation.
"Can't you smell it? It's…" Himawari turned around with a full plate in hand, it was Beef Curry.
Sakurako's eye's widened. She could feel her mouth water even more.
"You said it was your favorite, remember?" Himawari placed the plate in front of Sakurako and proceeded to make her own plate.
Sakurako looked down at the food, and looked up at Himawari who was now seated and staring at her, "W-what?" she started to blush. Why is she staring? This is embarrassing. How does she remember this?
"Well, I thought I'd let you take the first bite, see how it tastes. To be honest, I haven't cooked this dish since…" Himawari's voice slowly faded as she realized what she was about to say. It was that month, that month that had ended everything. She quickly looked at Sakurako who was now staring awkwardly back, there was no sign of any emotion in her face which partially worried Himawari.
She looked back down at her own plate, "Well," she said talking towards the dish, "I guess I'll take the first…"
"Awwwwh," Sakurako let out this sound which caused Himawari to quickly look up. Sakurako had taken the first bite and seemed to have been in her own little world. "this…is really good." Sakurako seemed to have made a small grin to the girl, the best she could muster up. She had to remain polite after all.
Himawari's heart jumped. She still likes it? That's great! That's wonderful! With this, maybe I can earn some sort of friendship back, right? Everyone loves food. Especially if it's free…but winning her over with just food doesn't seem right…well, it's a start.
An odd yet quiet dinner had passed and both girls finished at the same time. Neither of them having said more than a few sentences to each other, and making awkward eye contact.
Both girls got up from their seats and at the same time put their plates in the sink, inches away from each other, staring.
"Uhm, well, I'll clean these dishes then." Himawari turned towards the sink.
"Are you sure? Here, let me help." As soon as Sakurako tried to grab for a plate, it slipped out of her hand crashed onto the floor, breaking into little pieces.
"Ahh! I..I-I'm so sorry!" Sakurako blushed and bent down to pick up the pieces, Himwari, without a word bent over to pick them up as well.
As Himawari went to pick up one of the pieces, it cut her finger. "Shoot…" she sucked on her finger.
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry" Sakurako repeated, she couldn't stop herself now. She felt guilty. What am I doing? I'm losing control of my emotions. If I don't stop, if I don't stop…I'll…
A tear ran down her face.
Why am I crying? This is stupid. I hurt Himawari. Why does that matter she hurt me first. Yet, I'm crying for her. Is it because she's trying? Trying to what? You know that answer very well..
Sakurako felt her body being held, how long had Himawari been holding her? How long had she been crying? How long had Himawari been calming her down?
Sakurako wrapped her arms around Himawari.
"Are you okay?" Himawari quietly asked.
Sakurako nodded with her head buried in Himawari's shoulder. She did want this to end, but then again, she wanted to stay like this forever.
I've never been one to cry. Not since that day. I cried for a week straight. Maybe longer. I guess, now that she's here, now that I can see her again, and knowing it's not all that bad. I guess I can let myself go, every once in a while.
It's a shame though. I can't allow myself to be too close. It might just happen all over again. Besides, she has someone else.
Today, you have won the day Himawari. Tomorrow, the war inside me will continue to rage on.
