In Which Everything Starts To Go Wrong

The car ride there was generally silent other than the typing from Sollux and the slight hum of country rock from the radio. Every so often Aradia would poke Karkat on the arm and point to something passing by them, mostly roadkill but that was okay. Roadkill did kind of make pretty patterns now that Aradia brought it up. Sollux looked up from his typing and groaned loudly, startling the previously quiet atmosphere of the car and causing Tavros to swerve.

"Jesus dude," Tavros laments, "Give a little warning!" Karkat throws his hands up dramatically.

"Come one, keyboard-fondler! Do you want us all to swerve and crash into the nearest ditch to which we will then probably die long and painful car deaths?!" Sollux rolled his eyes and mumbled something about melodramatic assholes.

"No, athhole! I found what could pothibly be killing all thothe people! Vengeful thpirit!" He announced, pointing at his computer screen as if the rest of the hunters could even see it. Karkat sighed.

"When is it not a vengeful spirit?" he muttered but loud enough so the others could hear it as well. Aradia and Tavros giggled and even Sollux chuckled a bit.

"Alright, alright, what are we, um, looking at?" Tavros asked, not breaking his gaze on the road just in case. Karkat unbuckled himself and leaned between the two front seats to look at Sollux's computer screen, Aradia whined that 'that was her spot' and tried to squeeze in as well. On the computer read an article titled 'YOUNG MAN DIES OF SEVERE HEAD TRAUMA AFTER HEAD SMASHED AGAINST ROCK.' Their surroundings faded into a more rural landscape with rolling hills and, every so often, they would pass by some farm animals.

"Soooo, we're going to some hick town?" Karkat asked and got an unexpected glare from Tavros.

"Watch your mouth kid, I, uh, grew up in one those, um, 'hick towns' you're talking 'bout!" he snapped, Karkat rolled his eyes.

"And I grew up watching my parents drinking 2 bottles of vodka for breakfast and not even be affected by it, see, we both grew up in stereotypical environments~!" Karkat replied, Tavros sighed and rolled his eyes but still giving a little smile.

"Wait a thec, your parentth drank vodka for breakfast?" Sollux asked, seemingly confused and Karkat huffed with annoyance.

"That's what I said, isn't it? Wasn't always vodka, but whatever," Karkat snarked and Sollux laughed.

"You're amuthing, KK, I think I'm gonna like you," Sollux said in a tone of finality. Karkat did sarcastic jazz hands as if to say, 'great, look how much I care.' It solicited another chuckle from Sollux before he shook his head and went back to typing. Tavros turned his head to smile at the scene, despite the kid being rather hard-headed, crude and brash he was alright. He thought he would make a pretty good addition to their team.

"Tavros!" Aradia warned, "eyes on the road!" Tavros rolled his eyes but obeyed and turned his eyes back to the road, then his eyes widened to an almost comical size except panic shone through them.

"JESUS CHRIST!" Tavros all but screamed, there was a moment panic before they were at a full stop, the car veered off to the side almost flipped over onto its side. Karkat, being unbuckled, smashed his head against the dashboard and blacked out immediately.

A few hours later he came to it, holding his hand to his head and feeling bandages in place, he began to get up, confused until a pair of strong hands pushed him back down into bed. "Woah kid," a soft southern accent invaded his head, seemingly amplified by one thousand, "can't be getting' up too soon or that head wound of yours will be getting' worse."

"Fuuuck that," he mumbled and tried to get up again, the man merely laughed and pushed him down again. Damn it all, why was he always getting knocked out nowadays? "My fffriends," he stuttered and the man clucked.

"They're fine, too, knocked out cold though. You got the worst a' it, best be wearing your buckle next time lil' guy." Karkat groaned a little but that hurt his head, everything was spinning and blurry. Darkness bit at the corners of his vision. "Alright, lil' fella, time for you to be getting back in bed and getting some well needed rest." Karkat was about to protest but found his mouth to be full of lead, unable to produce words anymore. He took a look up at the man and was met with bright orange eyes. How strange, was Karkat's last thought before he was out cold again.
