I just watched Master And Commander: The Far Side Of The World for this first time and wow it was weird seeing the 2 Jarvises in one room. Or one ship. I highly recommend you check it out! Also, sorry if it's been a little while, but I've been busy. Hope this eventful chapter makes up for it! Please review and put a much-needed smile on my face!
Peggy sighed as she unlocked the apartment door. It had been very difficult for her to raise Robert in secret, but it had been done. When he had turned 15, Peggy helped to privately train him to work for S.H.I.E.L.D. Now, 3 years later, Agent Robert was one of the most formidable agents they had.
"Robert?" she called out. When she heard a muffled reply from the shower, she ventured further into the apartment and sat herself down on the bed.
It wasn't long before Robert Jarvis emerged with a towel wrapped around his waist, shaking his wet, golden hair like a dog. He was still skinny, and had grown very tall. Droplets of water ran off his pale skin and onto the plain navy carpet. Peggy smiled, it wasn't often she got too see her "adopted" son with his guard down.
"Everything alright, dear?" She asked, whilst turning her head as to give him privacy as he put on his clothes.
"Everything is fine." Was his short reply. Once fully clothed, he turned around to face her. "Do you have a mission for me, Ms Carter?"
Despite the years passed, Peggy always felt a short, sharp prick of her heart when he addressed her as "Ms Carter". It painfully reminded her of his father.
Whilst Robert's mannerisms were the same as Edwin's, his personality was quite different. Robert was very quiet and reserved, only contributing when he deemed necessary. He was there to get the job done, and therefore preferred to work alone. He could trust himself. He was also fluent in sarcasm, much to his rare colleagues' dismay.
"Yes, how on earth did you guess Agent Robert?"
It only took a moment before they both ended their serious pretence as their faces broke into wide grins. They embraced each other in a hug.
"It's lovely to see you again after so long, Ms Carter. I've missed you."
"As have I, Robert. As have I."
With help from Robert, Peggy stood up and made her way to the door.
"I assume you're ready to leave? Or are you still relaxing?" she said, beginning to make her way out of the building.
"What is this "relaxing" you're talking about?" Robert replied smartly, before locking up and following Peggy.
"Here comes Tony Stark himself, looking expensive as always. You can hear the cheers of the Los Angeles crowds behind me, probably because of his latest breakthrough. Rumors of the "Gherkin" project have spread like wildfire, some even believing it is related to artificial intell-"
Robert switched off his car's radio once they had arrived at one of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s many secret bases. In his spare time, he always kept up with Tony's comings and goings. He'd even gone as far to form firm friendships with him under various online aliases. Of course, Tony eventually figured out they were all the same person, so Robert had to come up with a fake identity (Kyle Hurst) and come up with many excuses as to why they couldn't meet in person. Oddly enough, it was the only thing that gave him a sense of pride.
They entered through the back door of the "office block", before heading down into the basement. They were immediately greeted by S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, and were led into the briefing room.
"Ah, Agent Robert, thanks for joining us." Said Agent Phillips, the woman in charge of this particular base.
Agent Catherine Phillips was one of the few people who knew about Robert. She was quite short but very muscular, and had long auburn hair which was practically tied into a bun. She had been one of the agents personally selected by Peggy, because it was undeniable that the great Agent Carter was growing old.
Robert gave an acknowledging nod, and Agent Phillips took that as a signal to start the mission briefing. Peggy herself didn't normally get involved with field work, but she did occasionally help with more secret operations, and would therefore get Robert on the scene.
"Alright, so thanks to Agent Jonah we now know that Jolt is going to strike in Los Angeles sometime this afternoon." Agent Phillips began. "We're going to need our best agents in the field, as we have limited information regarding Jolt."
"What do we know?" Someone asked, to which Agent Phillips put a large file on the table.
"All we know is that "Jolt" is an enhanced man. Dillan Miller was a store worker before signing up for one of the super-soldier recreation attempts. It worked to an extent, but left him hell-bent on turning all children of today into some variation of himself. Any other questions?"
The room fell silent. Agent Phillips sighed and brushed a strand of chocolate brown hair off her face. "You'll be spoken to individually on exactly who will be where on this op, but you're gonna be spread out. We've got a lot of ground to cover. Meet back here in 20."
Soon everyone except Agent Phillips, Peggy and Robert had left the room.
"Thanks for taking part in the mission, Robert. We need all the help we can get." Said Agent Phillips.
Robert gave a weak smile. "It's nothing, Kate. I suppose the thought of being responsible for children scares me more than Jolt himself."
"I'm sorry? Did I just hear you admit to being scared?" Said Peggy, a mischievous grin spreading onto her face.
"Oh I really want to take it back now."
Kate snorted. "God I hope that got recorded…"
"N-No, I didn't mean-"
"Robert dear, you said yourself the first sentence comes from the soul."
"I never said-"
"And I do recall you having nightmares about…"
"Alright, fine! Fine!"
Robert sighed in defeat. "Why must you bully me like this, Ms Carter?"
Peggy simply chuckled.
"Because who else will?" she muttered sadly to herself.
"Happy birthday dear Joey, happy birthday to you!"
Joey managed to puff all four of his candles out as his many friends cheered. He looked up to see his parents smiling warmly back down at him. He had never felt happier.
As he began to make his way back to the bouncy castle, he noticed his parents making their way back to the boring grown-up area, where they made conversation with his friends' parents. All familiar faces from their large community.
There was only one person he didn't recognise. A tall, scary-looking man was seated near the back. He had blond hair which was neatly combed to the side, and pale skin which made Joey wonder if he was sick. He was clad in clothes that his Dad would wear to important meetings. He stood out from the crowd, not only for his formal wear, but for the fact that he was alone.
Maybe people were avoiding him because he was sick, Joey thought, before gasping as he met the man's piercing gaze. He looked away immediately and ran to join his friends.
Robert sighed. Out of all the places he could have been stationed, it just had to be at a children's birthday party.
He seemed to have this negative effect on kids. They always seemed to hate him- not that he gave them any reason not to, especially since he "didn't exist."
He watched as what looked like 50 children sat in a circle awaiting an entertainer. He felt a pang of jealousy. He had never been able to have friends, let alone birthday parties. Maybe his birth was a bad thing, and that's why not many people celebrated it. He was a monster. Born unnaturally, an experiment gone wrong. Perhaps it would be better if he truly didn't exist.
Robert was too deep in thought to notice the entertainer, a magician, enter the hall. He didn't notice him ushering the parents back to the chairs. However, he did notice when he reached into his pocket and drew out what looked like a remote control. But the damage had already been done. Jolt pressed a button and a deafening bang rang through the street.
When Robert finally managed to open his eyes, he wanted to throw up. For what lay before him was a sight one wouldn't encounter even in a nightmare.
Adult corpses were scattered on the floor, many unrecognisable. Children, no older than five, were in hysterics. Many screaming, in a state of shock. Many crying, searching for their parents. Many dying, caught in the fray with blood covering their bodies.
In the middle stood Jolt, still dressed as a magician, who was grabbing kids by the neck and attempting to tie them together. To Robert's horror, he was succeeding.
Robert himself had been lucky. Had he been sitting anywhere nearer the parents then he would have met a similar fate. He ripped off his blazer and waistcoat and grimaced at the amount of his blood staining his white shirt. He had been thrown against the back wall in the blast, so he was certain that he had broken at least a few ribs. He hoped desperately that they hadn't damaged anything important.
Gathering his courage, he forced himself to his feet, drew out his gun, and limped (manoeuvring around the bodies and the wreckage) towards Jolt who had grabbed the birthday boy by the throat.
"Mr Millar. Dillan. Put the boy down." Robert croaked, trying to stand his ground.
Jolt smirked dryly. "Y'know, I was honestly hoping for some sort of military force, not some random guy at a party."
"Put the boy down." Robert repeated, to no avail. Jolt laughed and threw the battered child into the air, before catching him and poking a wound on his forehead with his grubby finger.
Robert felt something warm trickle down his cheek. He wasn't sure if it was blood or tears. Probably an amalgamation of both.
"Dillan, look around you," He pleaded. "Is this really what you want? Innocent people dying for no reason?"
"Of course not." Jolt began. "But in this world, the only way our species can thrive is if-"
Robert didn't let him finish. Taking his chance while the enemy's guard was down, he used the last of his strength to ram into Jolt. He let out a cry of agony as his already injured body was battered upon impact. But the move had done its job.
Jolt fell to the ground, dropping the child as he did so. Robert carefully picked the boy up and ran back to where he had been sitting. He placed the boy down and wiped the tears from his eyes.
"What's your name?" He asked, in a sincere voice which he hoped brought comfort to the boy.
"J-Joey." Joey said between sobs.
"Well Joey, you've been a very brave boy, but I'm afraid you're going to have to be even braver, you understand?" Said Robert.
Joey nodded before his eyes widened in fright. He pointed to somewhere behind Robert who twisted to look behind him.
Jolt was back on his feet and was edging towards them. Giving what he hoped was a last reassuring look to Joey, Robert sprung forward, aiming his gun at Jolt with a sense of raw determination. What he hadn't realised was that Jolt had a gun of his own.
Two crisp gunshots could be heard by the emergency services as they entered the building. Both had reached their targets.
