Everlasting-4

Jack stole a look at his watch as he stood patiently beside him, his interest resting on the sculpture in the corner across from him.

"Over due an hour." he said to himself out loud as he looked over at the double doors on the other end of the hall.

Just then the doors opened several men and women stalked out of the room. Many upset muttering among themselves other's solemnly carrying on to their next tasks. A guard signalled to the duo that they could now enter.

The colonel gave a slight nod as they walked by. Jonas remained in his seat the second chair away from where the First minister sat at the end. Jack looked from side to side frowning as he saw the young ambassador rest his head in his hands unaware of his presence.

It wasn't till he cleared his throat did Jonas raise his head. He stared at the man for a moment it was enough for both Jack to raise an eye brow tilting his head as he gave an uncertain look. Then as if a light switch came on Jonas eyes brightened some.

"Colonel O'Neill. Sorry about the delay some of the council member's expressed their concerns in the most unflattering ways which lead to the domino effect of distrust and accusation. That being said nothing that can't be addressed in a civilized manner… he rose from his chair… "Finally read the letter General Hammond gave me."

"Oh?" Jack replied.

"It's quite the proposition. I regrettably admit that it didn't help things with the meeting, but personally I am shocked." Jonas continued as he gathered up the documents to place in his folder.

"May I ask what it's about?" the older man said

"To extend trade with the other countries of Langara."

"And the council didn't like that idea?" the colonel asked in surprise.

"Well yes and no." Jonas stated as he pushed his chair against the table… "All trades must go through Kelowna first before any deals are made. Hence the distrust part."

"I thought the Kelownan government have been an open book with their information?" Jack said as came closer.

Jonas gave a slight smirk. "Yes, but Kelowna isn't exactly open to the idea of splitting the income with the other nations. That's where the accusations start. I don't blame either side, Kelowna's track record hasn't been great but our actions aren't with out cause and effect. Anyway, the proposal is out there. It's up to them to make the decision."

Jonas led Jack to his office. "So what can I help you with?"

"Carter's worried." Jack said as Jonas walked over to his desk.

He furrowed his brow at the answer. "Worried. Why would she be worried?"

"Oh you know women do those sort of things, becomes a hobby." Jack replied watching the younger man.

Jonas walked over to the book shelf taking out another folder. "So I have been told. Janet's expressed her concerns about Sam as well. I'm flattered but Sam and I would never work."

"Oh I know she's dating some guy, it's more a long the lines of missing doing brain stuff with you." Jack explained.

Jonas sighed. "I don't have the free time like I used to, otherwise I'd visit more often…but something tells me Sam's love life is small talk compared to what's on 'your' mind."

The way that Jonas looked at Jack told him to get straight to the point. "Ok, mind telling me what's going on with you?"

Jonas gave Jack a impassive stare before returning his attention to the folder in his hands. "What do you mean?"

"Really. Are you really going to play around here? Something's off with you and I want to know what it is."

"Jack there is nothing wrong with me. Just a lot on my mind." Jonas shot back.

"Nothing's wrong huh?" Jack challenged.

"That's right." Jonas stated.

"So do you want to tell me why you're holding an empty folder for the last five minutes?"

At that Jonas froze at the realization that Jack was right. He quickly set the folder down on his desk opening up the one with the documents.

"Like I said I have a lot on my mind. You know what those sessions are like." Jonas voice had a defensive tone. As he went to pass, Jack grabbed his arm forcing the ambassador to look at him.

"Jonas. I'm not kidding. You are hiding something and you know it."

Silence filled the air as a intense moment grew tenser Jack's hopes were raised when Jonas opened his mouth…

"Jack. Let go of me." his voice was cold and harsh surprising the older man.

Neither one backed down. Just then a messenger appeared in the door way he hesitantly looked at both men then nervously cleared his throat.

"Ambassador."

"What is it?" Jonas asked his eyes not leaving Jack's face.

"Um, Ms. Wing would like to reschedule your appointment. It is for six this…evening."

"That is fine. Tell her I will be there."

"Y-Yes sir." the messenger bid before hurriedly walking away.

Jonas yanked his arm out of the colonel's grip but in doing so the folder fell to the floor the documents scattering around their feet. He let out a curse under his breath as he bent down to pick up the mess, Jack went to help but stopped mid way as Jonas thrust up his hand.

"I got it. Just go."

Jack watched for a moment then did what was asked. He stopped in the door way. "You know if you keep things bottled inside you, it's going to blow up in your face."

Jonas halted looking up at Jack. "Col… he suddenly let out a pained yelp the sudden shock causing him to tumble backwards. Jack's anger was immediately replaced with concern.

"Jonas?" Jack asked as Jonas hand found Jack's forearm while the other clutched at his mid section. "Jonas. What's wrong?"

Jonas eyes remained shut the pain subsiding as he let out a slow breath. "No-"

"If you say nothing I'm going to knock your teeth out."

At that remark Jonas looked at Jack this time in surrender. Jack helped Jonas to his feet. "Close the door."

Jack reluctantly left the ambassador's side to do what was asked. Then turned in time to see Jonas lean against his desk.

Sam and Daniel had spent the better part of the morning taking in the achievements of Kelownan science and archaeological findings. Rueben watched with amusement as Daniel examined the goau'ld relic closely.

"Wow perfectly intact."

"Replicas usually are." Reuben replied coyly.

Sam gave a smile as Daniel covered his embarrassment by adjusting his glasses to look around the museum. "So where are the originals? Museums hold rare artefacts to show others true history."

Rueben walked over to one of the displays holding military apparel. "Kelownan history is not exactly appealing to the average citizen, but for outsiders like you it would be fascinating. It's a shame really, people always reflect on the worst events and not the major achievements we have to offer. Besides the last time we had any real artefacts exposed to the public a goa'uld Lord wanted to take over our planet."

"Good point." Daniel answered.

Sam turned to the advisor. "Kelowna has come along way since our first arrival. With the Naquadria project being successful you must be excited to see what the future holds."

Reuben furrowed his brow at the woman's comment. "I'm sorry?"

"Jonas said that the Naquadria project was going better than ever." Daniel explained earning a confused look from the man.

"Did he now? And what else has he told you?" Reuben demanded.

"Huh… that's it why?" Sam asked her curiosity peaking.

"It's very interesting he told you that… he met Sam's eyes considering the Naquadria project was shut down three years ago."

Jack tried to process the information in his head as Jonas looked out the window. The ambassador faced jack again.

"You know at first it was a shock but the more I thought about it the more it makes sense."

"Jonas-" Jack was cut off.

"Jack I know it's a lot to take in, but didn't you find it a bit odd that everyone, including Dr. Jackson died from Naquadria radiation and somehow I managed to make it through without even a hint of a side effect. It was always in the back of my mind, how was it possible? I mean, I know I have unique properties heck even Nirriti caught on to that, but it goes to show despite all that, I'm human."

"But Jonas…this isn't something you put on the back burner. You need to see a doctor, get Janet to look you over."

Jonas crossed his arms along his chest weary of the day's events. "She is going to come to the same conclusion Nina did. There is nothing anyone can say or do that will change things, the outcome is just plain and simple. That is why I do as much I can possibly do while I can still do it."

The room became silent once more. Jonas stepped forward. "One more thing. do me this favour, keep this to yourself. My own council doesn't even know."

Jack didn't get a chance to protest as the door opened once more. "Sorry to interrupt ambassador, but you are needed."

"I'll be right there." he answered.

He gave the colonel a sincere smile before leaving Jack to his own thoughts.

A/N: He's really sick!
