Ch. 4: Denial
A whole week had passed since the incident and Eddy was still acting like Double D wasn't even alive half the time; well, no more! He was done! He was absolutely fed up with the smaller male's behavior. At this point, Double D was no longer even sure what the issue was. He made his resolve and promised himself to call Eddy and get the other to confront him one way or another. The boy huffed in irritation as he slammed his locker's door shut, something that seems to have become a nasty habit for that week. He just hoped it wouldn't cause any dents or damage the door so it would get either stuck or not close properly.
"Hi Double D."
Double D gasped loudly in surprise and turned to his right to see who the sudden voice cam from, "Oh, Sarah," he grasped onto his chest over his deep, purple shirt, "Y-you startled me," She laughed, "Uhm, so, how may I be of assistance?"
"Uhm…" She bit down on her lower lip, the faintest of blushes suddenly coloring the apples of her cheeks and giving them a rosy glow, "I was wondering if you could help me with my math homework!" She exclaimed sweetly, leaning closer to Double D with a smile on her face.
It was very strange to Edd to see Sarah acting this…well…girly around him; not that she was a complete tomboy, no, Sarah had always been a girly girl who loved pink and dolls and ponies and fashion…but…nice girly, sweet girly, and, dare he say it… flirty girly with the way she was looking at him right now.
"Oh? Well, sure, I'd be more than happy to help a fellow underclassman-err-woman to succeed in her educational endeavors!"
"…so…that's a yes?" She asked, cocking one eyebrow at him.
He nodded, and she smiled, "Great! Pick me up at 6!"
'Pick her up?' "Pardon?"
She giggled and came even closer to him, "Oh just thought it would be nice for us to grab a little bite at the local diner tonight…uh f-for homework of course! Yes, I'm sure all that nutrition will help keep us awake and ready for knowledge!...Don't you agree?" She said, placing a gentle hand on Edd's left arm.
"I see…well…th-that sounds reasonable…though father is using our second vehicle today so I'm not sure I'd be able to pick you up in order for us to tra-"
"Uuuugghhh then just meet me theeerrreeee!" She dragged out the words with some impatience to her voice.
"Ah, very well…then…se you at 6 at…" he trailed off, hoping she'd take the queue and give him a more specific location.
"At The Blue Robin!" she exclaimed happily, but then added more sternly, "Don't be late mister! I refuse to be stood up!"
Edd raised his eyebrows and nodded, not daring to add another word to this odd conversation. "Good!" She said, patting his cheek twice, "See ya then Double D~" She waved goodbye as she walked away, her long fiery hair swaying around her waist. Edd gulped softly, as he remembered to when they were mere children and Sarah had developed an unexpected – and rather unrequited – crush on the genius. 'Has it… have her feelings returned? Oh dear…' Of course he wasn't one to ever tell anyone to stop liking whoever they liked but…well…obviously this would not be ending in her favor…or his if the day ever came when he would have to openly reject her feelings…Sarah had grown and matured into a beautiful young lady, but, the fire in her hair seeped into her personality and temper, and as the cherry on top of this possible-disaster-sundae, she shared – although not as extremely – her brother's Herculean strength. 'I suppose cheerleading has helped her maintain, if not increase her strength…' Edd rubbed his arm, already anticipating what may come to him.
"Was that Azula's spawn just now?" Eddy questioned in an unamused tone.
Edd turned, gasping once again, 'Can people please stop doing that?!' "E-Eddy! Wait…Azula's spawn?"
Eddy smirked, "Yeah Azula, y'know, Zuko's psycho baby sister? Fire bender?"
"Oh," Eddward chuckled softly at the connection, but stopped in an instant once it really sunk in that the person in front of him, making a joke, was none other than Eddy. His gaze turned more serious and he cleared his throat before speaking, "Eddy I need to-" He was cut off by Eddy's hand, which he lifted and stationed in front of Edd's face to silence him.
"Zip it shut for a minute ok sockhead? I need to talk to you."
Edd cocked an inquisitive eyebrow, but nodded and kept quiet. Hopefully whatever Eddy had to say was in the same topic, or else he would have to cut him off.
The smaller boy with the spikey deep-blue hair looked down and rubbed the back of his neck; he sighed, and spoke while looking at the school tiles beneath their feet. "I've been a real ass to you… I'm sorry…" He finally looked up, staring at Edd straight in the eyes, making the sockhead go completely frozen under his gaze. "I was just so shocked by what you said…a-and I don't mean about your sexuality, I mean, hell, you could be romantically attracted to lamps and I wouldn't give a shit…well…no…actually I would…that'd be kinda worrying, " He chuckled nervously, and Edd couldn't help but laugh too, "A-anyway…I was just in total shock that you said you liked me…and for that long…talk about perseverance…and emotional masochism maybe…" He trailed off but he saw Double D's smile tug down and his eyes showed a bit of hurt to them, "Shit, no, sorry, sorry! Uh…I just…what I'm trying to say is…is… I was a jerk. It was wrong of me to act like this." He softly kicked at the ground with one foot, "Ed misses how things used to be…and…I guess I do too…and you know I obviously can't return your feelings but, can you…will you uhm…"
Edd smiled fondly and nodded, "Of course Eddy, you are forgiven. But, I suppose I should apologize as well…"
"What? Why?"
"Well…I suppose it was a bad idea to inform you of my feelings considering you're not-"
"No, no, no, no! Do not apologize about that! The only time anyone should apologize about liking anyone is if that person is a complete asshat…like Kevin!"
Edd shook his head and sighed, "Really Eddy, must you still keep such a vendetta against him?" He shifted his weight from foot to foot and said softly, "I don't think he's that bad…"
"Excuse you? You don't think he's that bad? Kevin? Not that bad? KEVIN? The guy was the leading role in our fucking childhood nightmares, he beat us up more than once, insulted us countless times, tormented us countless times, and he's the stereotypical holier-than-thou dumbfuck jock with his dumbfuck posse of fellow dumbfuck asshats, I mean, just take a look at Ricky! That fucker."
The beanie-clad boy sighed, "Language Eddy, honestly. No need for the string of aggressive profanity…" He readjusted the beanie on his head, "Though in any case, while I agree with you that Kevin's presence was…well…rather unwelcomed during our childhood days and we received the occasional bruising, need I remind you that more often that not, those beating resulted from your scams completely backfiring on us and thus angering the rest of the kids?" He crossed his arms over his chest and cocked his hips to the side.
Eddy tch'd and rolled his eyes, stuffing his hands in his jeans' pockets, "Oh please my scams had always been brilliant, we just had some bad days that's all."
"Some?"
"Ohhh my Goooddd whatever. Point is, Kevin is and always will be an asshat."
"Eddy you can't just say that."
"Yes I can. Easily. It's Kevin we're talking about, and people like Kevin don't change. He has been the same for years, maybe better maybe worse, I don't care…and if he – miraculously – did change, then he wouldn't be Kevin anymore now would he?" He spat out.
Boy…where had Double D heard that one before…he looked down with furrowed brows as he remembered Kevin proclaiming practically the same thing about Eddy. 'They can be very similar…though I am sure they would rather die than admit it.'
Eddy huffed and walked towards Edd, grabbing onto the strap of his messenger bag and dragging him along with him, "C'mon I wanna go home." The ravenet sighed, and chuckled softly, "Very well, though I assure you I do not need the guidance Eddy." The smaller boy laughed and let go, "Yeah, yeah…oh, and by the way, not sure about how Ed will feel knowing you're boning his baby sis."
Edd turned a vibrant shade of red, "I-I AM DOING NO SUCH THING!"
Eddy threw his head back in loud laughter, "Not yet at least~" he teased further.
"Eddy!" The beanie-clad boy took the liberty to thwack the back of Eddy's head, causing Eddy to laugh even louder, and thus, making Edd laugh too. It was nice to have this back. It was nice to have him back.
Kevin absent-mindedly ate some chips from the bowl as he and Nazz watched a movie at his place. They lounged on his living room's couch, Nazz completely engrossed in what was happening and Kevin only mildly interested. 'Why oh why did she have to pick fucking Mean Girls?!'
Suddenly, a phone began to ring to the tune of Closer by Tegan and Sarah, right at the chorus when the song really picked up in both tempo and volume. "Oh geez! Sorry dude! Could've sworn I had it on vibrate" the blonde stuck a hand into the jeans' pocket and took out her phone, tapping the green button on the screen so she could accept the call. Kevin paused the movie while she spoke, somewhat grateful for the momentary interruption, 'Who the hell is this Glenn Coco kid anyway?...And what kind of name even is that?!'
"Hello?...Sarah? Hi, sup?...mhm…WHAT?...REALLY?... OH MY GOD OH MY GOD!" She smacked Kevin's arm excitedly, startling the other and making him give her a "what the fuck?" look. She giggled, and mouthed a 'sorry' to him. "Oh my God and he said yes? So like, is it a date? …. Mhm… mhm… oh I see…well, truthfully I wouldn't count that as an actual date…HEY I'M JUST BEING HONEST OK?...OH DON'T GIVE ME THAT…mhm…yeah yeah…oh he's adorable yes…" At this, Kevin couldn't help but raise his eyebrows, curiosity taking over him. Who were they talking about?
"Today at 6 right? It's like…what…5:30 now? Are you there already?...Ok, well, just make sure to look super cute but I think it'll really help you to like, actually look like you're listening and trying to do your homework, because let's face it, I'm sure Double D is more into that than you simply offering to suck faces with him behind the restaurant…HAH IT'S TRUE THOUGH! IT HAPPENED WITH JOHNNY…NO I WILL NEVER LET YOU LIVE IT DOWN…okay okay…mhm..ok, bye! Have fun!" Nazz laughed as she hung up her phone, but was slightly startled by Kevin's expression. It was as if something both amazing and disgusting had just been presented to him. "Kevin? Sup with you?"
"Sarah…is going on a date with the dweeb? A date? With him?" Kevin was completely surprised; he never would've guessed Sarah's feelings for Edd would come back after all this years…Just the fact that it was Edd and it had already happened before was mind-boggling to him. Sure the dork was nice and smart and helpful and non-judgemental and non-confrontational and calming and sweet and cu-'WOAH WOAH WOAH. KEVIN WHERE THE SHIT IS YOUR BRAIN GOING WITH THIS?! YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO BE ARGUING AGAINST HIM NOT FOR HIM…'
"Kevin?"
"H-huh?"
"I asked why it was such a big deal?" Nazz crossed her arms over her chest, "Sarah's 14 and Double D is 17, they're not stupid, especially not Double D. He's really sweet Kev."
"I know he is…just…I don't know…eeeewwww"
"eew?!"
"It's just such a mismatch! Double Dork wouldn't like her back. She's harsh and stubborn and has a bad temper and blahblahblah"
"Kevin!"
"But it's true!" He bit his lower lip, "…It is true right? Double D wouldn't like her back right?" 'wait…why am I even asking?'
Nazz shrugged her arms, annoyed with her best friend's negative reaction, "I don't know, I'm not Double D…hmm…but they do say opposites attract…and they are definitely opposites." She nodded.
"Oh." 'Oh?'
"Oh?" She gave him a questioning look, "Is there something going on I'm not aware of Kevin? What? You secretly like Sarah?" She wiggled her eyebrows.
"Oh Jesus fuck, no. Heeellll no. No. My romantic feelings for Sarah are completely non-existent!"
"Oh, ok, then you like Edd."
"H-HUH? NO. WHY WOULD I? THAT'S CRAZY. I DON'T LIKE EDD. IF I DON'T LIKE SARAH THEN I LIKE EDD EVEN LESS THAN THAT. I'M NOT EVEN INTO DUDES!"
She quirked an eyebrow at him with an unamused expression, "Mmmhmmm, quite the reaction for someone who most definitely doesn't like someone else."
"I don't fucking like the kid alright?!"
Nazz laughed, "I know, I know, geez I'm just teasing you. No need to get that defensive you asshole!"
"Let's just keep watching…" Kevin pressed play and resumed the movie. He wasn't getting defensive. He wasn't overreacting. He was simply stating the truth! He didn't have any feelings for any guy, especially someone like Double Dork. Why would he? He wouldn't. Exactly. Correct. Truth. Precisely!
Later that night after Nazz left, Kevin finished cleaning up the living room, when a thought occurred to him; maybe he should call Nat, just to see if he knew anything that he didn't, like for example, some new info on Edd…He was just doing this out of curiosity and to see if maybe Edd had told Nat if he had reconciliated with Eddy! Only that! No need to get suspicious on the jock! Silly reader.
He grabbed his cellphone from the coffee table in front of the couch, and sat down as he looked for Nat on his phone and called him.
Ring… ring… ring… ring… ri-"Heeelllooooo?" The sing-song voice came from the other end.
"Nat? It's Kevin?"
"Kevin? Well hey there Kevy. Lemme guess, you just missed the wonderful sound of my voice too much and it became unbearable!"
Kevin rolled his eyes though he knew Nat would not see him do it, "Nah." He chuckled when he heard Nat huff on the phone, "I was just calling to see if uhm…if…if uhm…well…o-oh! Did you hear Sarah and Edd were going for dinner tonight?"
"Hmm? Oh yeah, he told me about it on the phone when I called him earlier. She needed some help with her math homework so he agreed to meet up with her and shit…hah, I bet she needs help with math alright… 1 + 1 equals 2, add in a bed, subtract the clothing and let the multiplication begin~" He laughed.
"Aaaahhh Nat don't be gross!" Kevin stuck out his tongue in disgust, "the dweeb would never fall for that, or her. She's so not his type and you know it."
"I know I knooowww…what else is on your mind? I will be very weirded out if the only reason you called me was to gossip over their study date."
"A-ah…well..oh, you said you spoke to him earlier right? Did he say anything about Eddy?"
"As a matter of fact he did! Seems Eddy came to him and apologized to the little cutie. What a pleasant surprise considering it's Eddy, huh? But yeah, the guy apologized to him, even acknowledged he was being an ass, and badabing badabang, best friend-ville has found peace once more! Remember Kevy, friendship is magic!"
Double D and Eddy were on good terms again? How come Double D didn't tell him? Kevin knew what was happening between the two of them and even went so far as to try to comfort the sockhead twice. Didn't he deserve to get at least a little text message saying 'Eddy and I are ok now.' or something like that?
"Kevin? Hellooooo?"
"Huh? What?"
"Did you space out on me? Ruuuuude! …Maybe I should go there and spank you to show you a lesson~"
"How about you stay home, in your room, and never dare to spank me unless you wish to lose all of your teeth?"
"Oh I am so not jeopardizing my teeth! Those things can come in handy…if you know what I mean~"
"OH. MY. GOD. NAT. NO." All he could hear on the other end was the vibrant laughter from his teal-haired friend. Nat was a total flirt who felt no shame over his sexuality and anything that came along with who he was…but truth be told, sometimes Kevin was sure that Nat said certain things only to get a reaction out of him, and he kind of hoped this was one of those moments. He didn't have a problem with sex, not at all, he was just a lot more private about his sexual encounters and experience than Nat was.
Kevin wasn't a virgin; he had 2 ex girlfriends, Nazz being his first and another one of the cheerleaders being his second. Surprisingly enough, Kevin did not lose his virginity to Nazz like he thought he would, but the 2 of them did get pretty intimate.
He lost it to Chelsea, his other ex who came after Nazz, and it was pretty damn great. Kevin and Chelsea had broken up about 5 months ago after 8 months of dating, and truth be told, he kinda missed sex, but, he much rather get into a new relationship and wait until the next person is ready and committed, as opposed to having one drunk one night stand after the other.
"Why are you checking up on Double Dreamy by the way? Didn't know your friendship had blossomed like this already."
"What? No. I mean…well…I-I just thought that maybe he would've told you if he and Eddy ever made peace again. I just wanted to know cuz like…well…I just thought I should ok? I mean I kinda listened in to his conversation with Eddy when he confessed to him and then I tried cheering him up – still don't know why – and instead I fucked up, and then I try cheering him up again and this time it works out and just I don't know, I thought maybe he'd tell me about it too after all the fucking trouble I went through that's all. Ok?"
"Jesus, ok, ok, town it down a notch Kev. No need to get defensive on me buddy." Nat chuckled.
"I'm not being defensive!" 'Not this again.'
"Mmmhmm…well…this is all the update I have for you on Double D. He and Eddy made up and he and Sarah are gonna make out."
"NAT!"
"OR NOT?" He laughed. "Don't worry Kev. I agree with ya. Double D just doesn't match well with Sarah. Don't worry."
"Don't worry? who says I'm worrying. I'm not worrying! Jesus would it kill you to make sense for just one second?" Kevin asked with irritation
"Oh Kevin, Kevin, Kevin…"
"What?!"
"Nothing." Nat chuckled, "Anyway, gotta hang up now, got some Biology homework unfortunately calling my name, and believe me it ain't no siren call my friend… ta-ta!"
"Bye Nat." Kevin hung up his phone and sighed deeply, falling to his side on the couch and then turning onto his back. "Don't worry…tch! Why would I…stupid Nat…and Nazz…they make no fucking sense…" Kevin brought his phone up to his face and went back to his contacts, stopping once he reached Edd's entrance.
"…Maybe a little text message won't hurt…" He began typing.
To Double Dork: Hey Dork, heard you made peace with Eddy. Good for you.
"Good for you…does that sound sarcastic?...it sounds choppy and harsh with the punctuation…should I add anything else?...I guess I could ask him what's up…even though I kinda know already…it's 6:45…he should be done dinner right?...shit…what if he DID get with sarah…what if there at her place…or making out at his place…" Kevin looked out the big living room window, which faced across the street to where Edd's house stood. "What if this text interrupts them…Would I be cockblocking him?...probably….."
To Double Dork: Hey Dork, heard you made peace with Eddy. that's great! i told ya things would work out; was i right or was i right? Of course i was right! Sup?
sent –
"…Why did I just do that-AGH!" His phone decidedly to graciously fall down flat on his face, smacking him, as if scolding him for his potential cockblocking.
"Hmph. Whatever!"
