Chapter 4: Ours
Natsu took deep, slow breaths after having run fourteen sets of the gym bleachers. Sweat was running from every gland in his body, and his muscles were fatigued. He took a look around, watching both the girls and guys play practice matches against each other, all the while he searched for his best friend's blonde hair and listened for constant yelling. But it was quiet.
Lucy was nowhere to be seen and it bothered him. She never missed a single day of practice until now. She was perfectly fine when he saw her the night before, and was even in class earlier, but even Laxus did not know where she was currently at. Frowning, the pink-haired teen walked over to the bleachers and took a seat.
"Oi! Flamebrain!" Gray Fullbuster approached his captain, a bored, uncaring look on his face, "Where's our coach? Shouldn't she be here if she's going to have us win the championship title this year too?" The raven haired male took a seat beside his friend and sometimes rival.
Surprisingly enough, Natsu did not respond with a snide comment, but instead, clenched his jaw tightly together. It bothered him that his best friend would not show up for practice, or even leave a message as to where she could have gone. It was frustrating, and at the back of his mind, he knew, Sting Eucliffe may have had something to do with it.
Gray sighed, "Look, I was joking man. Lighten up. Luce is old enough to take care of herself."
"I know. But…she never misses practice, not once."
Lucy's chocolate brown eyes followed as the males in front of her dove from one end of the court to the other. This was nothing she has not seen before, but they all seemed to take it lightly, unless they had such high stamina that the last thirty minutes had little to no effects upon their body. Her eyebrow twitched with both annoyance and wonder. These guys were taking this year seriously.
The blonde Fairy Tail High student continued to watch and ignore the murmur and glares given to her by the female volleyball team of Sabertooth. At some point, a blush rose to her cheeks, after realizing that her eyes focused on a single spiky blonde captain that was currently counting numbers out loud.
"Lucy Heartfilia, aren't you brave for coming into our territory?" Lucy took a deep breath before giving a grimacing glare to her rival, Minerva, captain of Sabertooth's girl's volleyball team. Her narrowed eyes glanced from Sting to Lucy, a smirk flashing on her lips, "Of course. You would be here for the most wanted of the group."
Lucy tried to suppress the blush rising to her cheeks. She certainly did not come to the school to oggle the cocky bastard, but to observe and watch them practice. Nothing more. The two females glared at each other, the menacing and threatening aura increasing.
"Lucy," at the sound of her brother's voice, Lucy turned away from Minerva, "What are you doing here?" Rufus ran up to his younger sister and gave her a disapproving look. "You shouldn't be here, go home."
A frown fell on Lucy's face at her brother's words. He always acted this way whenever his friends were around. She knew he disliked the idea that she allowed herself to go to Sabertooth without anyone else, but she was old enough to be able to protect herself.
"Rufus, I invited her here," at the sound of Sting's voice, Lucy could not help but looked down on the polished wooden floor. She shouldn't have to have a rival student defend her, especially from her brother. When she looked up, Sting was standing beside her, his arm casually placed around her shoulders. It alarmed her, but the blush on her face was something she couldn't hide. Her brother was looking at her with an unreadable expression, and she knew then that he was extremely upset with her.
"You invited her here?! Sting, are you insane?" Minerva walked up to the newest captain of the team and gave him a cold, hard glare. She was obviously not happy with his actions, but the blonde male seem to care little for her opinion. He shrugged her off like her words did not matter.
Lucy noticed all this, and was suddenly unsure about Sting. He seemed like a different person here than the night before. Her gaze shifted from Sting to her brother, eyes narrowing. They were exactly the same. But when his hold on her tightened, everything else on her mind seemed to go away. Her blush only grew brighter.
Sting smirked. He loved the reaction he was getting from Lucy. He was a step closer to bringing the cornerstone of Fairy Tail's volleyball team down. "Let's go, Lucy. We have much to talk about."
He drove. He drove fast. Everything they passed was a blur in the window. Lucy was holding on tightly on her seat as he sped through the street, around corners, and past red traffic lights. She almost thought he was crazy until they came to a stop. Sting began to laugh while combing his fingers through his hair. He turned to look at her, a smile on his lips, and for the second time, Lucy thought he was not as bad as he made himself to be.
"That was great!" he chuckled, his smile widening, "I rarely ever got to do that where I came from! All those god damned cops are everywhere, but here...it's great!" Another laugh escaped his lips.
Lucy smiled, her heart beating rapidly from the adrenaline, when realization hit her. "Are you crazy?! We could have died! Cops or no cops, it's still dangerous to be driving ninety at a twenty five mile zone!"
"Hey, relax. Ninety miles per hour is not even that bad. I can go faster if you'd like to see," he gave her a wink. It took her a few seconds to realize the double meaning behind his words. Her face flushed before she walked out of the car and slammed the door shut.
How...how dare he? No one's ever dared to make such a perverse comment like that to me! Amidst her angry mental fit, someone tapped her lightly on the shoulder. Only on the third try was Sting finally able to grab her attention. Her eyes narrowed dangerously, "Pervert! I didn't come here to be treated this way!"
"So why did you come? Practice is long over. So...why are you still here with me? Why did you come here with me?" A sly smirk curled on his lips as the her cheeks grew a darker shade of pink. "Admit it. You have the hots for me, don't you?"
Flushed, Lucy narrowed her eyes dangerously at him. The blonde male raised his hands in the air and took a step back, his lips pressed tightly together to keep the laugh from escaping him. He had to admit, she was pretty cute when she was upset. It was entertaining to watch her face turn different shades of pink.
"I think… That you like me."
Sting raised an eyebrow at her bold words and smirked, "Of course I do. Why else would I take time off to hang out with you?"
Lucy glared at the Sabertooth student, "I'm not a fool, Eucliffe. You are still Fairy Tail's rival, and I refuse to believe every pretty word that comes out of your mouth." She crossed her arms beneath her chest, but the blush on her cheeks was evident. Her heart was unusually beating rapidly. Why was her heart betraying her? It wasn't like she actually believed him. This wasn't the first time a guy confessed to her. It was a common occurrence in her school, but why was she suddenly feeling...something?
After a short silence, Sting grabbed Lucy's hand, surprising her. He smiled when she turned to meet his gaze, "Let's go? I know where we can find a rose garden in the city. I'm sure you'll appreciate it."
Sighing, Lucy could not help but agree. He was just too adorable when he smiled like that. "Fine. But just so you know, not every girl's favorite flower is the rose."
"Then tell me what yours is."
"Hmm… I've always loved carnations."
Sting droved, at the speed limit this time, into roads that Lucy was unfamiliar with. By the time the car came to a stop, it was nearing sunset. She was led down a staircase behind tall palm trees, and into a secluded part of the beach. There were surrounded by tall cliffs, and smaller rocks that opened up to the shore. Lucy was awestruck. The water was clear, and slowly turning into an orange hue from the slowly setting sun.
"Wow…" It was all she could say as she walked towards the beach. There were shells scattered, along with different colored starfishes. "It's very beautiful."
Sting walked up beside her, "You think so? I decided to look for it when I overheard some old folks talking about some tragic story that took place long ago."
"Story?"
"You should know. You grew up here. There were two lovers who would meet up at an isolated part of the beach, but one day, they were caught by their parents who disapproved of their relationship. Their families were rivals in every way imaginable. They were forcibly separated for a while until they managed to escape. Once again, they met up, here, but this time, they planned on running away. So they took a boat and paddled into the ocean. That night there was storm, and the waves were harsh, and eventually swallowed the two lovers. They were never found, and neither was their secret meeting place."
Lucy listened, watching the water glisten, "That is so sad. Love must be really painful."
The blonde male seated beside her nodded in agreement, but there was a small tug at the corner of his lips.
"How did you find this place?"
"I was out on a run, really. That day, I wasn't even looking for it, but I noticed the sound of waves crashing. I thought to myself that the ocean was pretty far from here; it would have been impossible to hear the waves . It was a trek getting past those leaves, but I found it. " Again, he took her hand and began to pull her towards the rocks.
If Lucy knew she would be climbing rocks, she would have worn tights, or something similar. Her legs were getting scraped. They only stopped when they reached a plateau. It was much drier in the area compared to the rest of the beach, and the ground was more dirt than it was sand. It was only after they walked through a small tunnel that she noticed the ground become greener. It was a very small, enclosed space, but there was a large enough hole above that allowed sunlight to pass through. She gasped when she noticed the bed of roses. Red roses. It was beautiful, almost as if someone tended to them.
"Listen," Sting held her hand tightly.
Lucy did as she was told, "I hear nothing."
"Exactly. It's so secluded, you can't hear the ocean anymore." Her eyes widened at his words. Did they really travel that far? She wanted to touch the roses, but they looked so delicate. Sting leaned close to her, still holding on to her hand. "This place, is simply yours and mine."
Again, Lucy blushed. She quickly let go of his hand and began to make her way out of the area. It was wrong. It was so wrong for her to be with him right now. She was only supposed to watch them practice so she could determine their skills and habits. So why was she here with him? They are rivals and if anyone from her team found out, they would judge her. Natsu and the other guys would probably despise her. She felt like a traitor.
"What's up?" Sting followed after her.
"It's very beautiful, Sting. Thank you for taking me here, but I just realized how late it was. I'd like to go home now."
Not questioning her, Sting nodded, and led her back to his car.
Lisanna sighed, her lips forming a pout as she and the other girls watched as Natsu paced back and forth, still worried about their captain and coach. She wished he would worry about her like he did Lucy. Even the previous night, he never really offered to walk her home. Her face fell. Natsu never really notices her. It was always Lucy this or Lucy that. And although she knew that they harbored no feelings for each other, the silver haired teen could not help but be jealous of how close they were.
"I sense a sad little spirit in the room," Mirajane, her older sister placed her hand on her head, petting her, "Don't be sad Lisanna. I'm sure if you confess, he will notice you more." A small giggle escaped Mirajane as she watch her sister glare at her, face turning red.
"I can never do that...I like this right now. I'm fine watching from the sidelines." Lisanna's blue eyes were focused on the pink haired team captain. He was loud and currently arguing with Gray and Gajeel, while Levy was trying her best to stop her boyfriend from joining the fight. "When we win against Sabertooth, I promise I will confess to him."
