Notes: This chapter is something, let me tell ya'll. Woot! Also not filler-like!
Hn (Hello)
Test
A clear blue sky shines down with a slight breeze caressing trees grown on top of the roof of the academy. Tall oak trees stand proudly with their roots dug into the dirt and below the concert as they shade a cool path. Leaves of green, flourish on the trees covering the branches and blocking the sky from looking down at the ground below them. Just a few feet away from the trees and their created shadows Naruto, Sasuke, and I sit on steps warmed by the sun. All the while our late sensei leans back against the metal fencing surrounding the open roof.
Casual disinterest lines the silver haired man's form as he stares at us with a lone dark eye. Standard infantry clothing fits to his muscled body with finger-less metaled gloves worn on hands resting with a thumb in the pocket of his pants.
In boredom and an laid back attitude he crosses his black sleeved arms across his chest. "Hmmm, alright, why don't you introduce yourselves. One at a time." He lone eye blinks at the three graduates sitting before him.
A silent pause flows with the cool breezing wind before I break it, "Hyuuga Hinata." My tone holds its usual cold indifference while the man moves his lone eye toward me. Nothing passes or flows in his dark eye while he takes in my introduction. Naruto, who sits on the same step as me and beside the slightly elevated Sasuke, eagerly begins to open his mouth before he is interrupted.
"Maa maa, Hinata-chan" The jounin leans a bit forward with his lone eye closing in mock interest, "That's all? What about your likes, dislikes, hobbies, and dreams for the future?" He continues with his head slightly tilted to the side in wonder. "Not much of an introduction without any of that, don't you agree Hinata-chan?" His closed eye opens revealing no emotion.
Annoyance begins to cover my bones at the jounin's actions and nature.
I tilt my head slightly, mocking the man's actions as I give narrowed emotionless eyes to stare back at him, "Stranger-san, I do not even know your name." I lean forward on crossed knees with widening eyes, "Nor would I know how to make such an introduction without an example, would you not agree stranger-san?" Deftly I move back to my pinned straight position with a cold hardness realigning my features.
A 'hn' filled with agreement sounds through the air while the orange clad boy shivers.
"Scary!" Is loudly whispered as Uzumaki pales and moves away. Not only is the boy an unpredictable mischievous prankster, he is also one for dramatics it seems.
Then add the other boy who can speak a thousand words, emotions, and sentences in a single 'hn,' with penchant for distance and instigation and then add our new sensei...A part of me wishes to switch with the Haruno girl, even without my gut instinct screaming it, only a fool would not notice how disastrous this all is. Perhaps, dealing with Inuzuka would fare better in the long run than with this team.
"Me?" The jounin points to himself with a voice filled with boredom and fake confusion. He pointing hand falls limply by his side before he waits a few seconds to decide. All the while his eye still gazes at my form.
"I'm Hatake Kakashi. Things I like and things I hate, hmm I don't feel like telling you that." The listening boy, clad in orange, lets out a surprised and confused sound.
"My dreams for the future...never really thought about it. As for my hobbies..." The speaking man tilts his head slightly upward like he is pondering what to say next, "I have lots of hobbies." His eye closes again in a mocking nature. Irritating disbelief finds its way between the three sitting genin.
My cold mask still rests comfortable in place while the bored man waves a hand at me in indication, "Maa maa Hinata-chan is that a good enough example?" He gives no pause for an answer as he continues, "Good!"
He claps his hands together, "Your turn."
Softly I close my eyes with a quiet inhale, "As I have said before, I am Hyuuga Hinata." My eyes open and I tilt my head to look up at a drifting cloud in a vast blue sky.
"The things that I like are things that I like. This same method applies for my dislikes." I gently shrug before I continue, "My dreams for the future is a future dream. As for hobbies, I do participate in a few." I let my eyes fall from a peaceful drifting cloud to a staring man named Kakashi.
Giggles of amusement come from a shaking blonde boy as he points to Hatake, "Oh man, Ice princess got ya, dattebayo!" The silvered hair man sighs before he gestures at the giggling kid, "You, on the right" Hatake's arms cross themselves across his chest and the giggling boy's giggles slow to a halt. "You're next."
The blue eyed boy sits up quickly as he touches and tugs at his hitai-ate, "My name is Uzumaki Naruto, dattebayo!" His face converts to that resembling of a fox with a wide grin showing teeth stretching across his face, "I likes things! I dislikes things too, dattebayo!" The boy slightly sways as his never ending energy chaotically flows in excitement.
"I got hobbies and a dream as well! A big dream!" Unpredictably he stands and his face turns into determination and promise, "I'm gonna be the greatest Hokage, dattebayo! Then this village will have to stop disrespecting me and start treating me like I'm someone." His smile begins to rival the sun.
Without much emotion Hatake gives barely any acknowledgment before he turns his eye to the silent boy, "Last one."
The dark-eyed boy's fingers are tangled together and shield his mouth, "My name is Uchiha Sasuke. I hate a lot of things and I don't particularly like anything." The air seems to darken around him as hatred seeps from the inside out. "What I have is not a dream, because I will make it a reality. I am going to restore my clan and destroy a certain someone." The breezing air seems to stop when the lone Uchiha confesses his ambition out loud.
His eyes darken while his thoughts scream at him. I move my eyes away from him in attempt to lessen the stares on his tense form. If I was someone else I would find it concerning, but I do not. Instead I accept it without judgment.
I begin to find myself staring at the vast sky and shaped clouds again as the wind starts to flow freely across the land again. "Good, since everyone has introduce themselves, we will have our first mission tomorrow." I move my eyes back to the sitting silvered man on the metal fence. The whiskered boy moves and salutes the man in front of him in good nature, "What kind of mission are we gonna have?"
The jounin answers vaguely, "It's a task the four of us will do together." Eagerly Naruto leans forward and he breaks his salute with three 'whats' falling from his mouth. "A survival exercise."
Confusion enters Uzumaki's face, "Huh?! Survival exercise?"
Sasuke and I begin to listen intently for the man's answer. Instead of words, laughter begins to fall from the man's covered lips. "Oi what's so funny, dattebayo?!"
The one eyed man chuckles and answers, "Well, you see, if I tell you the answer you're not going to like it." His hands waves dismissively before he laughs some more. A sound of confusion and curiosity comes from the orange boy as we all stare at the jounin for an answer without vagueness stitched into it.
Immediately his mirth disappears, "Of the twenty seven graduates who just came here, only nine will actually be accepted as genin. The other eighteen will be weeded out and sent back to the academy. In other words this is a make it or break it pass/fail test and the chance that you'll fail is at least 66 percent."
While Naruto is the only one showing his disbelief in this matter the feeling is mutual between the three of us. The man continues to speak while Uzumaki shouts at him, but I do not fully invest myself in the ongoing conversation. The rate of failure is rather high and the news is rather surprising.
It makes sense in the aspect of testing us, but that little, why?
The man turns and waves a form of goodbye after giving instructions and a meeting place with a small piece of foolish advice to "not eat or you'll puke." It is better to eat even if there is a chance of sickness, than to not eat at all.
I find myself contemplating failure or another avenue to be trained, then the endless possibilities that this team poses.
"Ano, Hatake-sensei?" Hatake puts his hand fully into the pocket of his pants while he stares in question at me. "Why such a large percentage of failure? Why must 18 graduates go back to the academy?" A silver brow raises at my open curiosity. Staring at the man with my own raised brow, I feel not only Hatake's eyes at me.
"Maa maa," Kakashi lifts a pocketed hand to scratch his chin in wonderment, "Well to get rid of dead weight, I suppose." His gloved hand drops back into his pocket whilst he casually shrugs. Then he disappears.
A dark tinted sky of purple, filled with bright stars covers the land. The moon shines with rays touching the forested area as it begins to descend away in the horizon. Slowly I scout the area intended to be the meeting place for team 7's test.
Small animals scatter in wariness or fear as I walk within their range of sense as I scout with an activated Byakugan. Small networks of chakra and fur hide within created burrows when my presence falls onto their forms. Other animals stare warily or give sounds of warnings when I pass by them. All sense and know my presence while I tread upon their territory. Giving them no grief other then my unnaturally wrong presence, many do not attempt to claw or bite in defense.
Giving the wary and scared animals little heed I continue to walk within a shadowy forest. Leaves rustle with the wind as various sounds of insects and animals add to the song of a forest. Every step I find nothing to truly indicate the nature of Hatake's test. Nothing in my visual range of 80 meters is seen such as traps or the like.
Only those three posts with a clock set on top of the middle one, at the beginning of the area.
I can speculate the various options but most become to wide of a spectrum to narrow down any viable options. Instead, I begin to follow my path back to the beginning of the area where I would meet the others. Arriving, I deactivate my dojutsu as I wait and meditate for the next ten minutes until the time on my watch hits five.
The sound of crunching leaves and moved dirt alert me. Each sound comes from the opposite direction as the sounds of moving feet comes closer and closer. Two distinct walks resound around the tranquil forest. The clock ticks to five when a tired Uzumaki and an awake Uchiha arrives exactly on time.
Without much acknowledgment to or form either of them I activate my Byakugan to see if I could find Hatake Kakashi. I don't. Feeling the inquisitive stare of the lone Uchiha I shake my head in answer. A quiet 'hn' of understanding is all that comes from the boy. Deactivating my Byakugan, the Uzumaki boy plops to the ground beside me and yawns with closed tired eyes.
An exhale exits through my nose and I imagine that we will wait for the jounin in long hours. Instead of sitting through the long wait I decide to stand and complete my workout regime. Tired eyes of blue and inquisitive eyes of black watch my training form.
Sitting underneath a tall tree, shading me from the sun's bright rays filled with heat, I inhale the clean air. Hours have passed and still no sign of Hatake. Irritation and disrespect flood my veins while I form thoughts of leaving.
As I begin to move and leave, Hatake suddenly appears, "Hello everyone. Ready for your first day?" The late man waves halfheartedly while Naruto points and shouts at the jounin for being late.
"Maa maa, you see, a black cat crossed my path and I had to take the long route." His eye forms a mock positivity as he points in the direction behind him.
Naruto growls his displeasure while Sasuke and I glare at the man and his pathetic excuse. "Well, lets get started shall we." Hatake begins to walk toward a tree stump and he takes out a hidden clock in his pack. He sets the black and copper clock down before he pushes the center button on top of it, "Here we go, it's set for noon."
A jingle of two bells sound and silver metal flashes in the air. "Your assignment is very simple," the late man holds bells held by red string, "You just have to take these two bells from me. That's all there is to it." The man glances at the bells while he tugs them in emphasis.
"If you can't get them by noon you'll go without lunch." Kakashi shrugs in his admittance, "You'll be tied to those posts," He points at the three posts with the hand holding the two red stringed bells. "and you'll watch as I eat my lunch in front of you."
It seems the man predicted that we would take his foolish advice as an foolish order. Looking at the boys, it seems his prediction was right. Two stomachs loudly growl at the idea of food and hunger. While the boy's are left in their thoughts and hunger, I narrow my eyes at the two bells.
"There are three of us Hatake-sensei and two bells." I bring my gaze to stare at the lone eye of the man, "Do you expect one of us to fail?"
His eye closes in the form of happiness, "Well yes" Another shrug is acted by the man, "This way at least one of you will end up tied to a post and ultimately disqualified for failing to complete the mission."
He ring the bells, "That one goes back to the academy. Then again, all of three of you could flunk out, too. "
Why one?
Why would he disqualify one graduate when there is a need for a four man squad. Three genin to one jounin is a requirement of Konohagakure to be a complete team. Without this makeup, a genin team is not considered applicable, often resulting in a replacement for the missing member.
This was something talked about at the very beginning of the academy and impounded with importance. While I may disagree with this village's need for bonds, it is Konoha's way.
One of the many reasons this village is called soft.
So why? Does he have a student?
"Why?" I can feel all three pairs of eyes on my form as I rudely interrupt the talking jounin. "Three genin to one jounin is required for a cell to be applicable."
The questioned man tilts his head, "So why? Do you have another awaiting apprentice to replace the disqualified graduate?" I narrow the eyes at the man, "Or do you ultimately wish for an incomplete team to fail and drop so you do not have to take this responsibility?" My arms cross against my chest.
The jounin's hand holding the bells falls to his side, they ring across the tensing air, "Your actions indicate the last option. If you do not wish for this responsibility or you do have an apprentice, say so now, so I may waste no more time."
"I mean, the Ice princess is right now that I think about it, dattebayo." The blonde haired boy scratches the back of his while he searches for memories. "I mean, they did talk a lot about that during our time at the academy, ya know. I mean a lot, kakashi-sensei. I don't know if ya understand that, but they did." The whiskered boy crosses his arm around his chest and glares.
"Hinata-san and the dobe are right, so tell us why." The black haired boy practically demands an answer from the silver haired man before us with his fists clenched in agitation.
"Maa maa you caught me," bells held by string and flowing with the air are tugged upward and held inside the form of a fist, "I do have an apprentice." His eyes holds our stares and pockets the bells.
I move toward my black pack filled with supplies for a survival test and begin to leave, "N-nani?! Princess?! Where are you goin'!?" The blonde boy reaches out to my leaving form as he questions my action.
I stop and gaze at the boy a few inches away from me, "I have no desire for this foolish task. It is a waste of my time. Besides,"
I turn away from the shocked Uzumaki before I begin to walk away again "If this is how Hatake-san operates, with such audacious disrespect towards his students, I would rather find another way to become a genin. Options are available Uzumaki-san, like me, you and Uchiha-san should look into them."
I give one narrowed glance to the watching jounin as my legs take me away.
"Hell no!" Quickly Naruto grabs my upper arm with determination flaring in his eyes, "We'll beat 'em up. We'll beat up Kakashi-sensei's stupid apprentice and be a team, all right, dattebayo?" He begins to drag me back towards his team members, "Ya hear that, Kakashi-sensei!? We'll beat your stupid apprentice, take you stupid bells, be team 7, and you'll treat us with respect."
He points at the one eyed man before he points to himself, "Cuz I ain't gonna team up with nobody else." He uses his arm to keep a hold of me while he forms a x for emphasis.
"I ain't a big fan of Teme or the Princess!" The sun seems to shine more as he bluntly insults Sasuke and I.
He looks at the both of us with a bright smile, "Princess here!" He jabs a thumb at me, "Is cold an' scary an' weird an' well, all lot of other things dattebayo! An' that Teme!" His opposite hand points at the frowning boy, "Is well...a Teme."
Naruto's hands stop pointing and he tightens his hold on my arm, "But I wouldn't trade 'em for nothing, ya hear! Dattebayo! They're my teammates now!"
His grin widens and the wind begins to blow in an almost reverence "Didn't ya here? We're team 7!"
His eyes narrow at the bored man while he finishes his speech. Determination and hope lines every corner of his being as he just believes.
"Hn" A yes falls from the lone Uchiha's mouth as he too begins to glare a the jounin. I can't help but stare at surprise at both of the boys.
This has never happened to me before and I can't find myself knowing what to do.
Hatake stares back unflinchingly at the defiant and determined boys before he gazes at a shocked me. A curiosity lights up his dark eye, "And you, Hinata-chan? Do you feel the same way?"
"Yes" It's quiet too quiet as it comes out of my compelled mouth.
But I answer with strength that is not my own.
Without thought, without argument, I find myself agreeing with the sun and the moon.
Notes: Naruto's jutsu is back at it again! Don't worry Hinata will not change over night. Naruto just got his way is all. Ya know, normal Naruto occurrences and happenings.
Okay for Hinata's actions of walking away, purely selfish reasoning. She has no idea of the story line or kakashi's true test, nor did she do it for those reasons. e.i teamwork/bonding, yada yada. She left to find better opportunities for herself. More than likely she would've gone to the Hokage and used their bond for it.
I thought about fighting but it didn't seem in character for HinataOC! She would not take Kakashi's orders at face value. He isn't the Hokage, if he were she would, but the man is not even technically her sensei. Add to the fact that he was hours late for both meetings...well he disrespected her doing that. Then add in her thirst/greed for knowledge. She hoards it and uses it when needed, so that is why she knew.
