As we walked into the cafeteria I noticed it was just as messy if not worse than the halls. It looked as if there was a spectacular food fight that got out of control. The rotting smell of flesh, however, told a different story. It took me a moment to compose myself as the scent hit my nostrils, focusing on not gagging. Jill and I glanced at each other briefly, as a silent understanding that the smell meant danger. We both pulled out our Beretta's, cocked them and were ready for anything.
Angie walked between us, looking like an A list movie star with her two female bodyguards next to her. "Oh god those things are in here." Angie said stopping at the sight of the zombies. I looked up and noticed at least two of them moaning about.
Jill, still with her gun pointed in their direction, looked down to Angie with a comforting look on her face. "Don't worry Hun, those things are slow." Jill said. That's when I noticed what Angie had seen. She knew that the human zombies were slow and relatively harmless as long as they kept their distance. That's when my eyes locked onto what Angie had seen.
I raised my gun a little higher as chills ran down my spine at the sight of them. "That's not what she is talking about." I whispered staring at the Doberman's that had chased us not a couple hours before.
Now with the emergency flood light, lighting a small portion of the cafeteria I could see them better. The longer I stared at the rotting flesh dangling off the bones of the dog the worse the rotting smell became. They barely looks like dogs at this point, barely any fur at all, just walking corpses of what used to be a dog. One of the dogs looked up noticing us, growling at our presence.
I reached down to Angie's shoulder and lightly pushed her behind me. "Angie, get behind us and take cover." I had enough time to mutter out as the dog charged at us. As if perfectly choreographed Jill and I both began firing our weapons at the creature, barely missing it's head. The dog collided with Jill sending her to the floor, I stopped firing in fear of hitting the woman.
The dog ran off and turned around getting ready to charge at us again. I managed a quick glance at Jill, both of us nodding in understanding. She would take care of the mutt and I would act as back up in case any of the other creatures wanted to get in on the fight. Ignoring the mutt and Jill I focused on the now human zombies walking toward where we were a little faster than they were before. I began shooting at them as they walked towards me, killing four of them in a matter of seconds.
I watched Jill out of the corner of my eye shoot at the dog again, missing and was finally able to get up from the ground. She came over and stood with her back to mine, ready to kill anything else that came across our path. What I didn't notice until it was too late was that she was using a chair as a defence since her gun had somehow ended up on the other side of the room. Presumably was tossed after the last dog charge. I felt a small sense of doom as I noticed Angie in the corner of the kitchen huddled down.
I started to think that this was it. I would eventually run out of ammo or Jill would get thrown to the ground and be mauled. I started to think of the latter, how I could get Angie out of here and use Jill's potential pending death as a distraction. I shook my head at the thought getting ahead of myself in a morbid way.
I noticed the dog out of the corner of my eye running towards us, more specifically Jill. Like the mutt had it out for her and wanted her specifically to perish in its rotting jaws. Jill swung the chair into the rotting dog, it was at an angle where I couldn't shoot at it without giving up the line of sight on her back. Which knowing there was another dog could be a death sentence. So I stood there, holding my breath as the chair smacked into the dog again, hoping it would be enough to put it out of its undead misery. Shots went off and I heard the wet smack of flesh hit the floor.
Jill and I turned to where the shots had originated to see a man in a U.B.C.S. Uniform. Umbrella Biohazard Countermeasure Service, U.B.C.S. Now you knew if these guys were called it was the real deal. Not that seeing everything around us wasn't proof enough. The lone man continued to shoot all the other undead beings around us that were slowly coming out of the woodwork at the commotion. When he was satisfied with his work the man walked over to where Jill and I stood with a proud attractive smirk on his face. "Thought you could use a hand" the man said, in a heavy Russian accent. I smirked back to the man, even if he was acting a little on the cocky side I had to admit I was impressed.
"You work for Umbrella?" Jill asked but more or less stated.
The mans smirk faltered at the question just a little. "I used to, until they left me for dead in this place. Now I consider myself free-lance." His smirk was back to where it was before he began talking again. "Sergeant Nicholai Genovev at your service." he introduced bowing his head a little for effect.
As I was about to open my mouth and introduce myself the other zombified dog interrupted, jumping onto Nicholai. Jill and I involuntarily stepped back, startled at the twist of events as Nicholai struggled to get the mutt off.
"Come on!" Angie said now standing in the open. The look on her face showed that she was terrified and saw this moment as a moment to get the hell out.
"Wait! Angie!" Jill and I said in unison. There was so much happening in a matter of seconds it was hard to realize anything at all.
"Save the girl! I've got this Bitch!" Nicholai interrupted any thoughts that Jill and I were having.
In a matter of seconds Jill and I were both running towards Angie. With the exit still on the other side of the cafeteria Jill and I chose to go through part of the kitchen. I faintly heard Nicholai say 'oh shit' as we walked away followed by his screams. I shut my eyes in sympathy as we continued on running. It was dangerous and foolish to try and go back to save him. He was most likely bitten at this point and there was no saving him. I made myself a promise to shoot him on the way out. It was the least I could do for sacrificing himself for us. We ran around a corner and took cover behind the ovens, figuring it was a good as place as any to catch our breath for a moment.
I looked over at Angie, fear still evident on her face. "From now on you stay right beside me." I said in the sisterly tone. She gave me a shaky nod in understanding. I placed my arm around her shoulders. No child should go through this. As I thought about her wellbeing we looked around for exits, the closest one being blocked by cabinets.
"What do we do now?" Angie whispered out. Before either of us could answer the child we heard a clicking noise. I turned my head to the right, seeing Jill do the same. The clicking noise continued sending shivers down my spine. Anyone who had ever owned a dog knows that noise.
I looked around for a place I could hide Angie while Jill and I rid ourselves of the demon dog. Concluding there wasn't really a good spot for her to be covered completely, I concluded she just stay in the area. The small area was blocked on three sides, which was as good as anything at this point. I looked around for things we could use as weapons, wanting to conserve on the dwindling ammo that we had. I grabbed a couple of pans, handing one to Jill as we huddled together to whisper a plan.
"Wait here. Eyes." Jill said while motioning to her eyes and out to Angie.
Angie looked between us with a worried look. "Okay?" Angie whispered out. We smiled at her trying to give her some comfort. I gave Jill a small smile as well as we crept towards the clicking noise. I grabbed my bowie knife out of its sheath on my thigh, wanting at least one more weapon in my hand.
As we approached the clicking danger a small comforting thought went through my mind. Jill seemed as hell bent as I was in keeping Angie safe. Beside whatever reason that was behind her knowing that a "small one" was here as well, she seemed to want to get her out of here. The comforting thought to me was, if something happened to me, I would bet Jill would keep her safe. I glanced behind me to see Angie's crouched, retreating form.
Slow movement caught my eye as I looked behind us, a zombie cook came out from behind us grabbing Jills ankle. I heard a small gasp come from Angie as I grabbed the zombie's head and snapped it before it could make a sound. Jill turned at the commotion, noting the now dead zombie. She gave a small nod of thanks as we turned around back to the noise as the zombie dog was now in the same entry way the cook was in trying to get to us. Jill instinctively back into me a little. The dog backed up as well as if it wanted a different approach.
Taking advantage of the dogs dirtraction, we both stood up abruptly looking around for a plan b, I looked over to the oven as an idea sparked into my mind. I began switching the gas switches on all of the stoves. Jill looked over to what I was doing and began doing the same to the others I had not gotten to yet. I heard the dog growl and presumably leapt towards Jill and I. As I turned to smack the assaulting dog with the pan from before, Jill did so having my back. I signaled Angie to come over, within milliseconds the child was in between Jill and I. We bagan walking out of the kitchen with caution and back into the cafeteria. "You got a match?" I asked Jill hoping she indeed had one. It would take far too long for me to find mine.
"Of course." She said as she pulled out a matchbook from her hip with a small smirk. I smirked back as we quickening our pace towards the exit.
She lit it the matchbook expertly with her finger, tossing it behind us as we continued on to the door. I kicked the door open as we continued forward. We all glanced back to see if the match had ignited the gas yet. We watched in despair as the matchbook flitted to the ground, the flame going out.
I could hear the approaching zombies, human and dog alike. We were doomed, at the very least maybe Angie could bolt out of the school while Jill and I made sure she was out. But how far would she make it on her own? We continued to walk through the door, cautious of our potential impending doom. A woman greeted us, standing in the hallway just outside the door. We had been so preoccupied with the matches we didn't even notice her. She looked oddly familiar as she stood and smoked a cigarette. Feeling a little more hopeful at the cigarette in the woman's hands we bolted towards her as she flicked the cigarette behind us. The woman grabbed a blanket and covered herself and Angie in the blanket as the cigarette came in contact with the gas.
Jill and I were slammed into the opposing wall as the explosion hit. After the flames died down I caught by breath again. I looked around as the woman unveiled herself and Angie under the blanket. That's when I recognized her. She was security detail at the Hive, like I was. She took over after I was suspended. Alice, that was her name. I caught the off handed look of horror Alice was giving Angie as she fully looked at her.
Angie looked up to Alice. "Thank you." She said in a small voice as they continued to stare each other down.
