"You skipped detention?" A voice called out as soon as Anna slipped in through the front door of their assigned hide out.
She typically wasn't one to complain, but the establishment wasn't the normal accommodations she was used to. Instead of beautiful chevron parquetry floors, with tasteful panelling adorning the walls, she saw cheap vinyl floors with popcorn ceilings. She supposed the rental house was still better than the other places she's been in, and it was undeniably far more spacious than her little apartment in the heart of her city back home.
"Were you… always wearing those pants?" The same voice questioned, albeit sounding more confused.
"Oh crap. I totally forgot about detention," Anna muttered while turning to look at her questioning partner. "Don't ask about the pants… they're not mine." Her partner's blue eyes were quick to shed their confusion and become alarmed in an instant at her reply. Anna couldn't help but laugh at her partner's ability to jump to the wrong conclusions fast.
"Good…day?" Her partner asked, his voice still unsure about what exactly his partner was up on her first day back in high-school.
"It could have been better." Anna still couldn't get over her interaction with Mr. Call in the school's parking lot.
"I thought you made progress?" A day ago, Anna would have slightly swooned over him, but for some reason she could hardly give him a second glance now.
Her partner was a tall man, and quite intimidating at first glance. But considering he's been her handler for the better part of her career, she knew just how much of a worry wart and softy he was on the inside. Now she couldn't not see past his rugged looks, and chiselled face to see a boyish man with the purest heart.
"Relax Eli, I only jumped some kid for his pants. How do you think I got the detention?" Anna smirked.
"Very funny. I also heard that the cops were called to the school today. Mind explaining that one? I mean it's only your first day and here you are getting detention, cutting class and wearing someone else's pants and then skipping detention." Eli was starting to look a little like the older brother he was supposed to portray in their little undercover charade. Although the façade wasn't too far from the truth, after all he was the older of the two and did mostly look after her both as a friend and colleague.
"When you say it like that, I guess I have some explaining to do." She chuckled nervously, knowing their plan of keeping a low profile didn't really stand a chance now. "Come on, I need coffee. Might as well get cracking on those reports while we're at it." She groaned the last bit before trudging towards the direction of the kitchen.
"Were you always a trouble maker during high school?"
"Would you believe me if I said I wasn't?" Anna glanced back at him with an eyebrow raised and mirth dancing heavily in her eyes. "I made some friends. Do I get some brownie points for that?"
Eli only shook his head and chuckled, knowing full well she didn't seem like the type to be the quiet bookworm even during her younger days. He only had hope that this mission would go smoothly and fast, so they could go back to Seattle and hunt down art criminals again.
As bleak as the task sounded, it was something they both enjoyed. Anna loved it, since she was an art major prior to switching and eventually tackling federal level crimes. This allowed her to fight off black market art dealers and theft while getting to ogle at world known pieces. Eli, on the other hand, preferred the perks of a nice area and the beauties that innocently wandered the museums. He was an engineer major turned tech guy for the bureau, the man in the chair as they call it. But his sharp eye and athletic physique got him pressured to join in on the fun of the field operators, and he never regretted his decision since.
"Did you at least get some leads?" Eli pulled out a chair from under the dining table situated in the corner of the kitchen. The legs from the wooden chair groaned loudly from the movement against the large tiles underneath.
"We should probably get new chairs too." Eli muttered to himself as he sat down on the chair, annoyed at the outdated furniture.
The kitchen was a favorite for the two agents, since they had a silent understanding that all work would be completed near access to coffee. Plus it was the most modern of the areas in the house, and equipped with decent appliances. Though both were missing the high-end Italian state of the art espresso machines they got used in the cities, they were still happy that there was a fully functioning dishwasher available at their beck and call. Beggars can't be choosers as Eli's dad always said, although Eli knew this circumstance was probably the least appropriate for that saying to be applied to.
"Actually…" Anna finished pouring herself a brimming cup of coffee before turning around and carrying the cups to the table Eli was currently seated. "I may have more possible leads."
At Eli's nod, she continued "I briefly made contact with the target, Andrea. She either keeps to herself or sticks close to a boy named Cody. I managed to get an in with him when he was confronted by his step-brother in the parking lot. So I grabbed him and we hid while I called the cops –"
"Wait, you called the cops?" Eli interrupted.
"You know very well I couldn't do anything else, or else I would have outed myself."
"Calling the cops is also not a very teenage thing to do, Anna. Teens hate cops."
"I… damn it, you're right. Cody did get suspicious about that." Before Anna could continue reprimanding herself for her lack of judgement, Eli nodded for her to continue her report.
"We managed to escape and make it back to his place. We need to run a scan on his step-brother, Cody think he's in something big, along with his step-father. They won't leave Cody alone until he joins in. I think it could be Andrea's family that got them involved, which means Cody doesn't know the truth about Andrea… or he's covering for her."
"He obviously trusts you to be selling out his brother to a girl he just met." Regardless of what Eli may have felt about their interaction, he still jotted down notes into his report.
"I think it might be small town thing, everyone here is so… open."
"I'll say, the lady that cashed me out today at the grocery store told me all about her granddaughter, more than I needed to know. You'd have to be practically blood related in the city to get that much information on someone."
"Eli, I think she was trying to set you up." Anna smirked at her oblivious partner.
"What? No way, she was only trying to make me feel comfortable that there were more people my age-." His face dropped once he realised that Anna was in fact correct and that he had been set up. "Well it's too late now, I'm going for coffee with her tomorrow afternoon."
"Have fun on your date," Anna had her full blown shit eating grin plastered on her face. "Don't do anything I wouldn't do." She called out before placing her mug in the sink and walking up the stairs to her bedroom to change into her own pants.
"Oh yeah? You too!" Eli called out from the kitchen.
"Gross! I'm not dating minors!"
"Explain the pants situation then!"
"And ruin the mystery? I think not," Anna called back as she threw the sweat pants into the wash before making her way back to the kitchen.
And with that, the two continued their report after she rejoined him at the kitchen table. Both agents knew that they were in for a long night with all the researching they now had to do. But Anna knew one thing for sure though, she was under no circumstance going to search up a certain brown eyed teacher. Nope. No circumstance. The kitchen clock seemed to tick even slower than usual after that thought.
'It's definitely going to be a long night,' Anna internally groaned.
"Is this necessary?" Embry tugged at the tie that currently strangling him around the neck.
"Yes, don't you want to make a good impression?" The woman seated across from him hissed and swatted his hand away from his neck.
"I think it's too late for that. I did crash into her and drop all her things and then catch her skipping class. I'm pretty sure I'm the last person she's gonna wanna see today." Somehow that thought made him a little sad, only adding to the already forbidden nature of the whole situation.
"Oh that's nothing, you got her attention. Now you just have to work on keeping it." Renesmee lectured. "Although, if what you're saying is correct. I don't think you'll need any help. Nature will work its magic."
"That's what I'm afraid of. Nature working it's magic, I can't stop thinking about her. I need to know more about her. And she's in my class, what if I can't stop looking at her and creep her out? The last thing any high-schooler wants is their teacher crushing on them."
"Embry breathe. You'll be fine, you're overthinking this." A tall burly man joined them at the diner's booth, before squeezing in next to Renesmee.
Embry could only frown as he watched his friend give his fiancée a kiss while she giggled at the attention. His heart clenched at the thought of not being able to have that with his newly found imprint. She was only junior year, and that meant he still had to wait a while before she turned legal. And even after she did, who knew if she would even want him?
"You have to stop that." Jake warned, before grabbing the cup placed in front of him and taking a sip. "This is good." He smiled in appreciation at the coffee, causing Renesmee to roll her eyes.
"I'm not even doing anything." Embry grumbled, holding his still untouched mug.
"You're being paranoid. Probably thinking about her being too young. Not wanting to date you when she does become older. And how you're going to handle it if she does date other boys in the meantime." Jacob only raised a knowing eyebrow at Embry, almost begging him to prove him wrong.
The other man only huffed in annoyance before looking away towards the counter of the diner. Hoping the busy movements would distract him from the worst case scenarios his mind kept creatively generating.
A hand rested on his arm in a comforting manner, bringing his attention towards Renesmee. "It's going to be fine Em. You saw how Jake and I came together. It was beautiful and sure we've had our differences. But look at us now, we're stronger than ever and I couldn't be more grateful."
"It's true," Jake agreed. "Although I could have lived without you dating that Arnold guy."
"I could have lived without hearing about how you confessed to my Mom incessantly and tried to kiss her a bunch of times." Renesmee butted back, bumping her shoulder against his slightly.
"Touché."
"It's different. He was there when you were born, you knew all about him from the beginning. What we are, what you are to him. Everything." Embry's morning was turning out to be more depressing than he had previously expected. He wasn't able to sleep a lick after being sent home from patrol. Especially knowing that he lived a town over from Forks.
"Are you still worried about that rumour?" Jake asked, his expression turning a little worried over how tense his usually calm friend was now.
"I mean-"
"What rumour?" Renesmee injected, her eyes flashing with curiosity at the new exposed information.
"Uhh…" Jake looked a little stumped on how to tell her. There wasn't any way to let her in on the rumour without accidentally irritating Embry again.
"She skipped class… well my class, as you know. And you also know that I saw her again after school walking to her car. Except she wasn't wearing her own pants anymore, it had a guy's scent all over it. And there was a rumour yesterday that she was all over some kid named Alan during lunch." Embry grumbled. "His buddy kept telling everyone he saw the two leave school together."
Renesmee's expression soften at the story, her eyes turning apologetic. "Maybe she had a good reason?"
"She said she had her… mensies. But I know she was lying because well… you know. Urgh, I already sound like a creep."
Jake however was howling with laughter at the admission. His laugh caused a few heads to turn their way until they went back to their own company.
"Is something funny to you?" Embry wasn't easy to get agitated, but it was now becoming an easy emotion to escalate to. Especially when his imprint was part of the discussion.
"Well Em, you did just call the menstruation cycle…mensies." Renesmee explained on behalf of her still laughing significant other, a large smile was planted on her face in amusement.
"It's the term my Mom used when she was explaining everything to me, and… it stuck. I don't know. That's not the point here. How am I going to face her when I have all these questions I need answered."
"Okay, okay. How about we upgrade your terminology from a fourth grader to an adult and we can go from there." Jake was still clutching the side of his stomach from the force of his laughter. Renesmee chuckled at the jib but shushed him nonetheless.
"Seriously man?" Embry questioned, before the waitress interrupted them with her plates.
"Sorry about the wait, it's busier than usual and the cook took a sick day today so now we're understaffed. And…" Before the petite girl could continue, a voice called out the next order from inside the kitchen.
"It's fine Laura, we don't mind waiting. And I'm pretty sure everyone else feels the same way. So take a breath and relax. It's only-"raising his wrist to get a better glance at the time, Embry then continued. "7:30 AM, there's still a lot of time left."
"Thanks Mr. Call, I mean, Embry. There's a reason why you were my favorite…teacher. Favorite teacher. Any who, here's an all-dressed bacon and eggs trio combo." Laura started naming the plates she was placing down on the table, the recipients helping her distribute the dishes to the proper owner. "Well that's all. If you need me I'll be around." Laura's eye lingered on Embry during the last bit before clearing her throat and running back into the kitchen.
"See? No need to worry, you're popular with the young generation." Jake joked, before digging into his plate. "Just be as calm and charming as you were with Laura, when you're with your imprint."
"You're not helping," Renesmee tutted, as she skilfully cut up her pancakes in a neat order. Her actions only succeed in getting Jake to scrunch up his nose at her peculiar way of eating.
"But maybe Jake's on to something. Why not date someone else to keep your mind off of her for now?"
"I am not dating my former student," Embry shook his head. I mean sure, it wasn't technically illegal or anything, and she was well over 18 right now. But, surely it wasn't…ethical was it?
But then again, his imprint would be considered his former student too if they ever got together in the future. What if people think he only dates his former students or something?
"You're doing it again. Aren't you?" Jake questioned, as he took a breather from his inhaling. "Look eat your breakfast. Nessie and I will be on call if you need any help throughout the day. I promise."
Before Embry could reply, the front door jingled signalling new customers were walking in. His senses urged him to turn his attention there, and after a second he knew why. His imprint was here, and behind a tall man. A tall handsome man.
"Why are we doing this again?" Anna wasn't a morning person, but her partner insisted that they play the part of a family. Which included the part where he was clumsy guardian that lacked cooking skills.
"Come on grumpy pants, I'm sure they have decent coffee. Better than our little machine at home." Eli pushed her into a booth that the waitress signalled them towards. Unbeknownst to the duo, right next to them was the supernatural trio, seated behind the sad excuse of a partition.
"Hi, what can I get ya." Laura looked at Eli with eager eyes, as she brought out her little notebook and pen from her pockets on her apron.
"What kind of coffee do you guys serve here?" Anna asked, still too tired to be bothered by the lack of attention being shown her way.
"Just coffee. We serve the best cup of Joe here, just ask anyone in the diner." Laura smiled towards Eli again.
"I can vouch for that!" A voice called out from next to them, causing the two to look over at Jacob. "Hi, I'm Jacob. And this here is my lovely fiancée Renesmee and that grouch there is Embry."
Anna's eyes almost bulged out of her eyes at the sight of the very thing that kept her up all night. The one mystery she was dying to uncover but knew was not possible.
'This morning could not get any worse,' Anna thought as she made eye contact with brown eyes.
'Things are starting to look up,' crossed Embry's mind as a small smile finally broke out on his face for the first time that morning.
Enjoy. And bless the ones who review, you help me gain much needed inspiration. Until next time.
