He winced as Mary Margaret slammed the door shut behind her. Her and Charming were off to town, leaving him to think over what he had done that morning. The thing was though, that instead of not caring, of thinking, 'who gives a damn?', he felt guilty and ashamed. It wasn't his fault. He had no idea what the noise had been, and if anything, was trying to do the honourable thing by scouting out the room to see if it would be any danger to anyone.
He sat on the sofa with his arms leaning on his knees, glaring up at the ceiling. He was trying. He was trying to be a good man; to lose his wicked ways and somewhere along the line win Swan's heart. But it was all a little difficult when he was being held prisoner in their home and no matter what he did he some how seemed to offend her or piss the woman off. It was infuriating. And was it worth it? Was going through all this nonsense and yelling worth one woman? Was it really worth his time? Yes; yes it was.
He let out a sigh a glared at the picture box as he racked his brain to find some way of getting to Emma; getting her to look past the whole Captain Hook thing and see Killian Jones instead. Rolling his eyes hopelessly, he picked up the remote control and experimentally pressed the big red button. He jerked his head back as the screen lit up and began blaring out the audio of some romcom, as Mary Margaret had called it, that was showing. Having nothing better to do with his life at that present moment, and wanting to take his mind off his own non existent love life, he sat back to make himself comfortable. But there was no relaxation in store for him. Ten minutes into the film, he growled as the main character fought to get out of the same position that he was in, and was succeeding. The girl soon saw through his bad boyish smile and confessed that she was in love with him. It was only after Killian had thrown the remote at the screen, knocking off a photo of Emma coincidentally, that he stopped and thought back to the film. If it worked for that guy, why couldn't it work for him? And so, he retreated to his room, where he spent the next few hours formulating a plan. He was planning the perfect romcom.
Emma dragged her feet towards the door of thr the apartment, knowing that her mother was at work and her father had just taken over at the station. Which meant she got to come home to Hook. And she had no one to call him off her this time. Nonetheless, the slid her key into the door and slowly swung it open. Without looking into the apartment, she dropped her bag and coat on the floor and leaned against the wall. Any moment now...
"So how was work, love?"
She clenched her jaw and squeezed her eyes shut, wishing he'd just go away but when she opened them, he was still there, standing in front of her smugly. But this time she had to do a double take. He wasn't wearing his coat. And he had his shirt sleeves rolled up. And his shirt was very very loose. She almost gave him a pat on the head when she caught him noticing her studying his attire and not even commenting on it. She at least expected a, 'like what you see?'. Something wasn't right. Something was suspicious.
"Have you had food since Mary Margaret left?" She asked, ignoring his question completely and picking up her coat to hang up. She didn't get the chance though as it was taken out of her hand by his own single hand. He turned away from her to hang it up on the wall with the other coats and then turned back, acting naturally. She looked at him with wide eyes. What the hell was he up to?
"Just an apple from the table. I'm not quite hungry at the moment. Also, I wanted to ask a favour of you, Emma."
She couldn't stop the confused and worried look grace her face. What the hell had happened to Hook?
"Uh, sure?"
He gave her a small sweet smile and moved to sit on one of the stools at the kitchen counter, pulling out one beside him for Emma. She was beginning to get very worried as to what was going on.
"I was wondering if perhaps, you'd mind bringing me into the town so I could acquire some new clothes. I'm quite certain this isn't the norm and I might as well forget about Captain Hook for the time being."
Emma was stunned, and she was quite sure why. Because he was being nice? Because he was being civilised? Because, suddenly he wanted to fit in with everyone else?
"Well... I, uh, suppose I could. I mean I have to get lunch, and so do you, but we could always get it at the diner."
"That sounds like a plan then, Swan." He said as she got up and gave him an uneasy smile. Before she turned away, he pulled her back by her arm. "And thank you. I know I haven't been the most pleasent of a person to deal with. I swear I'll try be more mature from now on,"
She let out a very awkward and pathetic, 'hah ha..' and then turned on her heel to get changed. What the hell was going on with that blasted pirate?
She eyed him suspiciously as he walked alongside her down the street. Something was up and she wasn't even sure she wanted to know what it was. There didn't seem to be anything different about him today. He still held that confident posture, the smirk that stretched across his handsome- wait no; his face. His incrediably irritating face. His earring still dangled from his left ear and he still had the black kohl lined under his eyes. But there had to be something different. She was getting it from his aura.
"I didn't know you found my facial features to be so hypnotising, love."
She tore her sideways gaze away from him and rolled her eyes. Yes, the cockiness was still the same. That obviously hadn't changed.
"Cram it, Hook. Let's just get this over with so we can get some food."
She caught a small smile grace his lips. Not a cheeky smile that aggravated her. A real, genuine smile. What the hell was going on?
"Lead the way, my lady."
"I'm not your lady..."
But her reply was mumbled and drowned out by the ringing bell of the shop door as they entered. Flora, who just happened to be one of the good fairies that stood by Aurora's side, swooped forward from the counter and approached Hook and Emma all too enthusiastically.
"Emma, darling! What is it I can do for you? Oh and this must be Killian Jones! I've heard many bad things about you, young man but I can tell you have a good heart."
Hook looked simply puzzled at the fairy, and even a little disturbed, but was quickly saved by Emma, who grabbed the sleeve of his leather duster and pulled him towards a rack of clothes.
"We're just looking for some clothes for him, Flora. We're okay for now."
If a fairy could pout, Flora was pouting.
"Fine, fine. But do give me a call if you need anything. Oh and don't worry about colours. We have everything is a wide range of colours."
She toddled off back to the front of the store to the counter and left Hook and Emma alone to their shopping. But they didn't notice the fairy watching them interact. And they certainly didn't notice the doting smile on her face.
"Okay. So, what do you want?"
She watched Hook frown at the racks of clothes before him, inspecting the denim jeans and t-shirts. But then a group of long sleeved, plain black shirts met his glance and he instantly pointed a finger to them.
"Them. They will do."
Emma raised an eyebrow at him, clearly amused at the pirates face. He looked a little lost.
"Okay. But you need pants and shoes too. And, uh..."
"Yes?"
Emma couldn't stop her mind from wondering what type of underwear he was wearing currently. And if they had been washed in a while.
"Underwear."
"Undergarments? Well why didn't you just say so, Swan? Why do they make you so...nervous?"
She was so close to slapping him. How dare he embarrass her.
"They don't. Now, come on. Do you just want some jeans?"
"Whatever you reccomend, love."
She clenched her jaw and took a deep breath. She sorted through the pile to find a size she reckoned would fit him and picked up a couple of shirts in the other hand. Without wasting a second glance, she snatched up a packet of boxers into her arms as she made her way to the shoe section. He seemed like a boxer type of guy.
"I'd like to keep wearing my boots, if that is acceptable."
Emma looked down at his feet, a place her eyes had never wandered to before and cleared her throat.
"Yeah, whatever. They'll do."
She shoved the jeans into his arms when she spotted a leather jacket that would suit him perfectly, and grabbed a handful of t-shirts along with a hoodie as well. She tossed a plain red t-shirt at him and the black hoodie she had picked up and pointed a thumb at the changing room that was to the side.
"Get changed while I pay Flora. You owe me big time."
She couldn't help but smile as he struggled to hold all the clothing in his arms as he stumbled to the changing rooms, and then heard a sigh from Flora. She turned to see what the fairy was looking at. She was looking at her.
"What?"
Flora giggled and leaned on the counter with both hands to her cheeks.
"You two are adorable. That look in his eyes when he looks at you... If only we all could be so lucky."
She looked dreamily into the distance while Emma looked at her with disgust.
"I'm sorry, what? No, no. Ha, no. We- Me and Hook- Ha! No we're not together. He doesn't look at me like that. That's his face in general."
" Oh, honey."
"Don't 'oh, honey' me! It's not true!"
"Emma... Do you really think he'd let just anyone order him around like that? He adores you!"
"But-I... I don't-"
"Emma, darling. Wake up and look at him properly. You're torturing the poor man."
Emma stared blankly at Flora, mouth open wide. Millions of thoughts were flying around in her head, buzzing and fighting over her decisions. Maybe...
"I feel like a bloody twat in this."
Her head swiveled to the side to see Hook standing before them, changed into his new clothes. He looked so bizzare in modern clothes. He looked out of place and... and attractive. Very, very attractive.
"You d-don't look like a twat. You look... fine."
She was never going to live that down.
An incrediably awkward lunch at Granny's was fueled by silence until Mary Margaret entered the diner with Henry, who bounded up to their table and shoved Hook over playfully in his seat. Once he was sitting beside him, he instantly started chattering on to the pirate about school and the cool things he had done that day. No matter how much Emma didn't want to admit it, Hook was good for Henry. The boy idolised him. He was the only male figure in his life besides David and David treated him too much as a little kid. Hook took him for what he was and catered to all Henry's amusements. And Emma had to thank him for that. Even when Emma told Henry it was time to leave, he spent the entire trip back to the apartment chatting enthusiastically to Hook.
She frowned. That was it. Hook was becoming more of a good person He as becoming the father figure Henry always deserved. And he was becoming, dare she even think it, a friend.
Captain Hook was becoming her friend.
A/N: Thank you for the alerts, favourites and reviews guys :) Sorry I've taken so long. Was distracted by what was going on in the season and other things.
Next time: She expected him to kiss her. She wouldn't have been happy about it but she sure as hell wouldn't have complained.
