~Chapter Four~

Naruto stared curiously at a puddle as they walked by it, stopping for a moment, he simply stared at it.

"Naruto?" Kakashi called out curiously to him.

"Huh?" He glanced back at his Sensei, "oh! Sorry..."

"This spacey kid is supposed to be a Ninja?"

Naruto didn't really hear the comment, he gave one more lingering look to the puddle before he caught up with his Sensei and they continued in the direction of the Land of Waves. A noise from behind them had Naruto at alert and in a strange and abnormal move that was purely instinctive, he dodged the sharp points of the metal chains shooting out of the contraption on the Shinobi's arm. All this took place in a matter of seconds...but the chains that wrapped around their Sensei, tore right through him. The scream that came from Sakura and gruntle of annoyance from Sasuke, woke Naruto up to his teammates. He felt as if he was in a state of unconsciousness, more so than we he was asleep. 'Heck, maybe this is all a dream...' he glanced over his shoulder, "Sakura...Sasuke...stay at the old man's side!" He said loudly, listening to Sasuke argue as Sakura listened and moved in front of the Bridge Builder.

"This kid...thinks that he can take us on..."

"Na... that's not it..." Naruto laughed, he started running at the duo, the chain shooting out at him, he pulled a kunai out and stabbed it down into one of the links before pushing himself up and flipping so that his body twisted and he slammed his foot hard into the face of one of the Shinobi. "That's not very nice...I wasn't done talking!" He pulled back and noted that the other had darted past him and was heading straight towards the Bridge Builder. "So that's it...huh?" He thrust his foot up into the nin's jaw and avoided the man's foot as he jumped back, throwing four kunai together and sticking the man to the tree, but a pop sounded, and he turned to see him dashing after his teammate. However, Naruto saw something else too... "heh...welcome back, Sensei..."

The shinobi turned at the comment, but weren't nearly quick enough, as one ended up in a strangle hold while the other was knocked completely unconscious.

"What? Sensei!"

Kakashi tied the two up before turning his attention to the Rambunctious Blonde of his team.

"..." Naruto eyed the logs that were scattered on the ground and as he turned back, he jumped in surprise and stumbled onto the palms of his hands. "Hey~! What's the big idea Sensei!?"

Taking his hand, he rested it on Naruto's forehead with a deadly serious look on his face, "Naruto, be honest with me...are you dying?"

Sasuke chuckled at the question, "hey loser, you need to stop acting so cool...no one knows how to deal with you when you act like me."

Naruto knocked Kakashi's hand away and stood up, "say that again, Sasuke! I dare ya!"

"Stop is Naruto, you were cool for like...a minute...but now you're being lame!"

Naruto laughed, "yeah, yeah...sorry my personality is lame. I'm sure I'll grow on you both."

Sasuke smirked, "no injuries?" He walked over to Naruto and circled him curiously, "impressive...really...not bad at all."

"Geeze..." Naruto rolled his eyes, "thanks Sasuke-Sensei...I'm glad you approve."

Watching the two boys interact, Kakashi felt the scene to be more absurd than Naruto's quick thinking and impressive tactical maneuvering. 'He really is dying...isn't he.'

It was too bad that their problems didn't stop there. After arriving in the Land of Waves, they had been attacked by another Shinobi...this one...was different. Naruto hadn't expected his level of skill on a C ranked mission. Momentarily berating himself for ever thinking he'd be able to take on higher level missions without the proper training. The overbearing chakra around them was suffocating, and Naruto was on high alert. Their sensei had them all in formation around the Bridge Builder, and his eyes met the shaking hand of Sasuke who was to his right. "Sasuke...you've got this..." Naruto commented, keeping an eye out for the Shinobi that had hidden himself in the Mist.

"Sasuke, calm down, I will protect you with my life..." Kakashi said, glancing back for a single moment, "all of you!"

"I wouldn't be so sure."

Another reaction he hadn't planned, Naruto turned and moved his Kunai forward with the intent to strike the enemy down. The thin line of blood that appeared on his cheek had stunned him and Kakashi had bull rushed the nin before he moved, but water leaked freely from the wound and the Shinobi vanished right before their eyes.

Kagome smiled as she watched the two kids run around outside. Rin was back up and feeling better than ever. She walked outside and stopped at a familiar energy. Turning to investigate the direction of the forest past the castle, she was awed by the vison of beauty that was standing there watching over her. In her arms, an all too familiar fox kit that was struggling for his freedom. She walked past the two kids, informing them both that she'd be right back. She was under strict instruction not to wander too far and so...until she was sure she could leave...or ready to leave...she'd abide by those rules. She stopped before the woman and bowed politely. "You were there, in the forest all those nights ago." She looked up and met the familiar blue eyes.

"My name is Mamori...I met your Lord, on that night...but wished to speak with you..."

"With me?"

"It would seem...that my son had made a curious connection with you...that night."

"Your..." her eyes settled on the fox kit that the woman finally released and knelt as it ran into her arms and up her shoulder. "So this little one is your son?"

"Indeed...his name is Kurama...he is but a cub still. However, his powers are growing exponentially, he will be stronger than any of my children prior. Miko...how have your nights faired, recently..."

'My nights? Does she mean...my dreams?' Kagome frowned, "I sleep well at night, thank you for asking."

"So you've not developed any strange dreams?"

"That...so you were talking about that. I thought you might be...but I wasn't certain."

She smiled charmingly, "my son...his future is bound to another...his fate was foretold long ago...calamity will fall and my son will be imprisoned with a young human child. However, while I may not be able to save him from that fate...I dare say, you could ease his soul."

Petting the precious fox, she couldn't understand how this kit would cause calamity or how he'd come to be imprisoned, but the mere idea of it...broke her heart. "What can I do?"

Mamori smiled, "you will know...when the time comes...you will go...when you are summoned."

"Summoned?"

A small laugh sounded, and the woman vanished, leaving the kit to playfully bat at Kagome's hair.
