A/N: Just got my wisdom teeth pulled, so I thought this would be appropriate. Enjoy
Harry had been crying all morning, and at first, Lily couldn't figure out what was wrong. She had changed him several times, tried to feed him several times, and then burped him several times. She had held him and sang to him (and then she stopped singing because it only made him cry louder). However, when she saw him gnawing on his hands more than usual, she put a finger in his mouth and sure enough, his gums were swollen. He was getting his first tooth.
At first she panicked because this was her first child, and she had no idea what to do with a teething magical baby! Then she remembered that she herself had been a magical baby, and her parents, who were muggles, had done just fine. So that afternoon she went to a muggle store and bought Harry a teething ring. The instructions said to freeze it overnight, but Harry was so fussy that she just used a quick freezing spell and gave it to him.
Like everything else she gave to him, the first thing he did was put it in his mouth, but unlike most times, since he was supposed to put the ring in his mouth he didn't get it snatched away from him the first time he tried. He looked very pleased with himself at this and then started to realize that this particular ring made his gums feel better, so he stopped crying and started to swirl the thing with his tongue and proceeded to cover it in baby drool.
A few hours later, James came home and he brought Sirius and Remus with him. When he saw Harry with the ring, he looked incredibly confused.
"Lily?" he asked. "What has Harry got in his mouth?"
Lily, who was in the kitchen, poked her head around the doorway. "That's a teething ring, James. Harry is teething."
James looked confused. "What is a teething ring?" Lily looked at her husband, astonished.
"You don't know what a teething ring is?"
"Well if I knew, I wouldn't be asking you, now would I?"
Sirius rolled his eyes. "Lily, you have to remember that James, Remus and I didn't grow up in the muggle world. We have little knowledge about your crazy customs." Remus stared pointedly at his two best friends.
"Yes, but unlike you two, I do know what a teething ring is. It's a muggle baby toy that is used in much the same way as when parents put a freezing spell on chocolate frogs for their kids to suck on to make their gums feel better when new teeth are coming in."
James and Sirius looked at each other and grinned. "Frozen Frogs!" they exclaimed excitedly.
"That's what you called them?" Lily asked, coming into the living room and picking up Harry, his frozen ring in his mouth.
"Yeah," James said. "I don't remember getting them, but Sirius remembers his parents doing that with Regulus."
"I remember getting mad because they wouldn't give me one as well," Sirius explained.
"Well, Harry was fussing all morning, so I went out and bought him a muggle ring. It seems to be doing the trick," Lily said. To prove her point, Harry gave a wide, gummy grin to the adults in the room, accidently dropping the frozen plastic ring in the process.
The reaction was immediate. As soon as the toy hit the ground, Harry started to wail. Upon hearing Harry cry, Sirius and James immediately sought to calm him and the both dove for the toy, knocking heads in the process, and falling on their butts. Harry, who was watching this, stopped crying and began to laugh, ultimately started a Who Can Make Harry Laugh the Most Contest between Sirius and James. James, trying to be funny, picked up the toy and put it in his own mouth and made funny faces at his son.
Lily was disgusted, and whipped the plastic toy out of her husband's mouth and hit him over the head with it. "You kiss me with that mouth!" she exclaimed.
After promising that he would brush his teeth before he kissed her again, Lily washed off the toy, reapplied the freezing spell and gave it back to Harry, who promptly put it in his mouth.
"You know," began Remus. "I think he's starting to get attached to that thing."
"I certainly hope so," said James. "It might keep him from wanting to go everywhere with that ridiculous dog toy you got him for Christmas."
"What can I say?" replied Sirius cheekily. "The boy knows what he likes, and he's got great taste."
A/N: Really, really short, but something I felt that needed to get done. Haven't updated in awhile, so I guess something is better than nothing. Harry's first trip to Hogwarts is next (cuz you can't expect his actual first time seeing the castle to be when he was 11. His parents were marauders for goodness sake!)
I actually wrote this ages ago, but my computer and fanfiction don't like each other apparently. So I'm sorry for the wait.
Review? I'd super appreciate it. Don't know when the next update will be, so don't ask. Teeth are killing me. Bit of advice, don't get wisdom teeth. Just don't.
