Disclaimer: I do not own The Hobbit, it belongs to it's rightful owner. But Lilia is mine so don't steal...
She slowly stood up from the chair and stretched letting her joints crack from being in an uncomfortable position all night long. She shivered from a slight breeze and of course that made her even colder from being freezing to death last night. She was hungry and her stomach growled when she caught a whiff of bacon and sausage in the air searing on a skillet over the kitchen fire.
"Ah Lilia you're awake good. Will you join Thorin and I outside for a moment?" Gandalf asked her and walked out of the kitchen. Lilia groaned, she was hungry and didn't like Thorin, mostly because of his sexist views. But she was curious and that was the driving force behind her agreeing to the request.
Reluctantly she straightened her back and shoulders and walked to go outside. When Lilia shut the hobbit hole door behind her she turned around to find Thorin and Gandalf standing by the front gate.
Here we go. She thought taking in a deep breath. So many questions were going through her mind as she walked down to them. Had I done something wrong? Will they take me with them? Surely that cannot be it. Thorin would never want me with them.
"Lilia?" Gandalf said to her.
"Yes?" The young girl replied carefully.
"Hm," Gandalf mumbled and looked to Thorin.
"Gandalf tell me what this is about now. Why have you brought this girl out here with us?" Thorin demanded losing patience.
"Thorin Oakenshield I would like to introduce you to our fourteenth member of our company, Lilia Tok," Gandalf said as if happy and if we the two were never introduced.
"WHAT?!" Both Lilia and Thorin shouted at the same time.
"Impossible! I will not have a girl going with my company on the quest!" Thorin shouted not even looking at Lilia who was beyond confused.
"You asked me to find the fourteenth member and I have, seeing as my original plan hasn't come through," Gandalf said quite calm. Lilia was starting to realize that she would get out of here, it was perfect to her, she wanted, no needed to go with them.
"No! She will only be a burden and get somebody killed. Besides she is a child Gandalf!" Thorin was almost yelling.
"I am not a child!" Lilia shouted feeling her dislike for Thorin grow even more. "And I will not be a burden. I can take care of myself!"
"Thorin she is right, she most certainly fend for herself and she will be most useful on our quest," Gandalf said. "She is who I've chosen. Lilia will accompany us on the quest to Erebor."
Thorin groaned and crossed his arms across his broad chest. Lilia wanted to go on this adventure even if it meant leaving her life behind. She wanted to start a new chapter in her life. She was done with being the obedient hobbit.
"I want to go," Lilia stated with certainty in her voice even though deep inside she was not entirely sure how well she would fare out in the world. But she wouldn't let anyone else know that.
"She won't be my responsibility Gandalf," Thorin said in defeat turning his back to Lilia, looking at the wizard but his words still were harsh.
"Understood," Gandalf said and Thorin groaned once more letting his arms drop to his sides and walked back into the hobbit home not even looking at the young hobbit/Elvin girl. Lilia could feel herself feeling sure that this is what she wanted, it was the unknown that urged her to want to go on this quest.
"You should go and collect some of your things Lilia. But be quick, we leave soon," Gandalf said looking down at her and smiling when he saw the excitement on her face. She agreed and started to walk but Gandalf stopped her. "I must warn you Lilia, it would be wise to keep your heritage a secret. Dwarfs are not fans of elves even if you are only half elf."
"Alright then, I'll be back," Lilia said and off she went. She understood that why she needed to keep her heritage a secret, although she wasn't entirely sure why. But Lilia had heard stories and didn't want the company to hate her for it.
When Lilia made it to her own house she looked around for a bag and then put in it some clothes and a few biscuits, she gathered a blanket and then she realized that is would not be wise to be traveling in an ankle length dress this journey. She made her way to her room and started to ransack the drawers. Clothes were flying across the room as Lilia continued she search for something suitable. Then she it, the article of clothing she wanted. She picked up a pair of dark brown almost black leggings and then also grey pair, as well as forest green and dark purple tunic.
Lilia threw on the dark brown leggings and green tunic. Even though the tunic was small she didn't feel overly assured it would be enough for the journey. She rummaged through her things till she found her outer corset. It was brown with intercut sketching over it. She put it over her thin tunic and laced it up in the back. Now she felt more normal, granted she most likely would not have the flexibility she normally would but it kept everything in place. She stuffed the other clothes in her bag and slipped on her black flat boots. As she ran back out the door she grabbed her cloak and water satchel.
When Lilia got back to Bilbo's house the dwarfs were outside just starting to get on their ponies.
"Lilia you came back," Kili said looking over at her.
"Lilia will be joining us on our journey," Gandalf said giving her a nod. Some of the dwarfs looked shocked and the others groaned. Lilia looked back at Kili and was looking at Fili and they were exchanging looks of surprise.
"Get on a pony. We're leaving," Thorin said with a huff. Lilia did as directed and pulled her way onto the white pony. She had some difficulties but managed to right herself on the animal. She refused to look weak in front of the others seeing as they weren't thrilled to have her with them.
"Are you okay there lass?" Fili asked her when he saw her struggle slightly.
"Oh yeah, just new," Lilia said taking the reins of the pony.
"You mean you haven't been on a pony before?" Kili asked who was on a pony next her with an amused look on his face.
"Well no just because I've never had a chance to," Lilia said quickly trying to not make herself look ridiculous.
"Move on," Thorin commanded from the front of the line. The group fell in line with Thorin and Gandalf in the front and then in the back there was Lilia, Fili and Kili. She looked back once more at Bilbo's house thinking that maybe he would come up suddenly but he didn't. Lilia's pony grunted and threw his head back catching her attention. She turned back around and saw that the group was moving on leaving her behind. Lilia sighed, Already being left. And she pushed on to follow the others.
Lilia's pony was trotting along. She felt the wind pick up around her and blow through her hair. It felt nice on her skin as the sun heated her face. She was leaving her home but it was an exhilarating feeling. Sadness crept up upon her slowly, she was leaving everything that she knew, with a group of dwarfs and a wizard she hardly knew. She was leaving behind the one person that was her friend, her only friend. Off into the wild.
Of course it didn't surprise Lilia the looks she was given when they company would pass other hobbits. She couldn't blame her fellow neighbors for looking at the dwarves in shock but what she wasn't so keen on liking was the looks he was given when those hobbits would spot her.
Originally Lilia had expected the same shocked face the dwarves had received however that was not the case. When they past her old classmates, Barbra and Betty, they stared in shock then their face turned into a look of 'we should have known.' Lilia couldn't help but groan.
To the hobbits in the Shire, Lilia was always on the strange side, never fitting in. Lilia was the hobbit that just was different causing her to be an outsider. Thus when Betty and Barbra saw Lilia with dwarves it seemed, almost fitting. Dwarves were strange, different and outsiders and Lilia was the same. She resented this but at least now she would be with different beings if that could be a good thing. As she rode on she took a few moments to really think about what was going on.
So here I am, leaving all I know behind. Heading to a place I have never heard of, with 13 dwarves I have never met and a wizard I have only read about. On a quest to take back something that isn't mine and there is a slight possibility that I will die…no a decent, well large… no not even that. There is a 99% chance I will end up dead. Ok Lilia, for the moment just try not to fall off this pony.
Ok so there it is, I hope you all enjoyed it! It's a little shorter than usual I had a very busy week and didn't have any time really. Thanks for reading :)
