Chapter 4 – Playing with fire
It had been a month since Zoe had kissed Max outside the hospital and they had been seeing each other without the rest of the department knowing. Zoe was the happiest she had been in years, and Max couldn't believe he finally had the women he had tried so hard to get. Zoe was still staying with Dylan at the boat, and Max still lived with Robyn and Lofty so seeing each other was becoming more and more difficult. It was their break and they were stood on the rooftop of the hospital having a coffee. "Is this the only way we can get some privacy?" "Well we could, just go downstairs and tell everyone about us and then we wouldn't have to sneak around" Max said it so quickly he was lost for breath at the end. Max smiled and Zoe looked confused. "What's up?" he said moving closer to her. "Zooeeee? Earth to Zoe" he laughed and she finally came back. "Sorry, I was just thinking about something." "Anything I can hel-" he began saying before ducking down behind the ledge. "Max what…" Zoe began speaking before noticing Robyn down by the entrance of the hospital.
"ZOE!" Robyn yelled waving. "What are you doing up there?" Zoe was stumped, "Erm…" 'come on think Zoe' she looked down at Max who just shrugged. "Just taking a selfie the view up here makes a great background." By this point Max was practically lying across the floor almost wetting himself with laughter. Zoe kicked him but he carried on. "Shall I come join you, we can have one together?" Robyn went to turn around before Zoe answered "No it's okay, it's pretty cold and I shouldn't be up here. I'll come down to you." "Okay see you later" and Robyn walked off. Zoe looked straight back to Max who was still in hysterics "Well thanks for your help stupid." Zoe didn't know whether to laugh or panic that they were almost caught by his sister. "Come over here a bit" he said while crawling across the roof away from the ledge. He stood up and looked at Zoe who was shivering. "Max it is freezing up here, seriously was there nowhere else warmer that we could have gone?" "Well I can always warm you up" he smiled and moved closer to Zoe and just as his face touched hers she moved back "Your face is freezing" she moaned and turned to walk inside. Max grabbed her hand and pulled her back around to kiss her. It started soft but turned into a passionate kiss before Zoe spoke through Max's lips "I have to get back to work." They retreated from the roof a few minutes apart from each other and went their separate ways.
It was 2 o'clock and Zoe hadn't stopped since her last break with Max. She headed towards resus and checked her patient over who had been in a collision. Tess walked into the room and saw Zoe "Hey, have you seen Max recently?" "What? No why would I?" Zoe sounded surprised and Tess could tell this. "Well you both work in the same hospital, same department and he takes your patients to other areas of the hospital." Zoe stepped back from her patient and apologised to Tess for being so blunt. "Sorry, it's been a busy day. Is there anything I can help with?" Zoe only had an hour of her shift left and so being tired was just the excuse for how she was acting. "I just had some paperwork down here which he seemed to leave behind earlier but it doesn't matter." Tess went to walk out of resus and Zoe followed her. "I can take it up if you like… I'm going that way anyway to get some results." Zoe added the last bit realising it would seem strange her taking it up. "Okay thank you. If I don't see you before you go tonight have a good weekend off!" With that Tess handed Zoe the paperwork and went off to the staffroom. Zoe started up the stairs to Max's so-called office but made it look as though she was heading to another department.
She checked the hallway before turning her back on the door and walking in. "Just can't keep away from me today can you?" Max must have seen her walking in because he was right behind Zoe when she turned around. Before she could say anything he had pushed her against the door and locked it while kissing her. Zoe put her arms around Max's neck and kissed him back. She pushed the paperwork up against his stomach "Well you gave me the excuse to come here, leaving all your crap everywhere." She was smiling and he took it from her, walked to his desk to put it down while Zoe sat down on the small sofa in the corner. There were small windows in the 'office' but the blinds were already shut so she wasn't worried about anyone seeing her. "I tried texting you earlier but you didn't answer." Zoe quickly pulled out her phone and saw the text Come upstairs next break, I've got something to tell you x "Sorry I've been rushed off my feet all afternoon. So what was so important? I've not got long until my break's over so whatever it is better be good." Max sat opposite her smiling and completely changed what he had planned on doing. He moved closer to Zoe "Well is this worthwhile?" he asked as he put his arms around Zoe's waste and started to kiss her, lying her down on the sofa. Max expected Zoe to push him off but she pulled him closer and kissed him back, getting more passionate every time.
Before they knew it Max's floor had been redecorated with their clothes. Max was still kissing Zoe as someone knocked at the door. "Max, are you in there? Max we've been trying to call you for the past 20 minutes." It was Charlie, Max looked over to the phone which he unplugged as Zoe came in the room. Zoe was struggling back into her dress which Max zipped up while he chucked his own clothes back on. She picked up her heels trying to put them on behind the door while Max went over and opened it. "Sorry, fell asleep. Everything alright?" "I could ask you the same thing… We need a patient moving departments when you're ready." Charlie looked over Max's shoulder and noticed a jacket left over the couch. "Okay I'll be just down" and shut the door. "That was too close. It shouldn't have happened" Zoe said as she had her back to the door about to leave. Max moved closer "Well it's not like you regret it or that it was the first time." He said this smiling while remembering all the times they had been alone up here. He moved in to kiss her again "Max I've got to go" she said struggling with decision of staying or leaving. She finally sorted herself out and checked the hallway before leaving. Zoe straightened her dress before walking back downstairs. Max was stood against the door with a huge smile slapped across his face, before looking up and seeing the jacket on the couch. He thought to himself and panicked a bit as Charlie must have seen it. He would take it down to Zoe at the end of her shift, so as to not draw attention to who's it was.
It was the end of the day and Zoe checked her phone Meet you outside, usual spot? I have your jacket, think Charlie might have seen it x Zoe stood staring at the last bit before being brought around from her trance by Charlie "You alright there? You might want to have a word with Max about answering his phone." Zoe couldn't help but smile slightly, Charlie saw "What something funny?" he asked not quiet understanding. "No, no. Yes Charlie I will have a word with Max." She said this in the most serious voice she could muster up when all she wanted to do was laugh. "I'll see you Monday Charlie." She said as she left the ED, a smile widening across her face. She walked over to hers and Max's meeting spot and through him the biggest glare she could. He held his arms up and started walking over to her car "Your jacket, not mine" and they got in Zoe's car before leaving for the night.
