Alice: Dreaming(?)

Groaning from the pain, Miku Hatsune pushed herself up from the ground. Looking down at her body that was covered in dirt, there could only be one reasonable explaination for everything that was happening: she was dreaming. She had to be. What else could it be? Where else would there be lakes made from tears and size changing food and talking mice and psychotic duchesses and handsome creepy guys in boats?

In reality, she was back at home, taking a nap under the branches of the tree in her garden. "This world," "this reality," none of it was real. It couldn't be! It couldn't be….could it?

No…No! It was just a dream…just a dream…the answer was simple. Find the doll. Catch it. Never let it go. Wake up. Simple. A very simple plan. Anyone could do it. Except…not so simple.

The world had grown…or she had shrunk. One or the other. Who was she kidding? She was somehow really tiny – again. What else would explain the blades of pink grass towering over her head? The same blades that flattened under her feet thirty minutes ago.

Forget finding the doll – at the size she was in, she'd never be able to catch it. Then she'd never be able to wake up!

But she had to do something, anything. And so, she'd go somewhere. After all, wasn't that the point?

Alice: Unsure With Sizes

Minutes passed. Or was it hours? A straight path. Infinite circles. As it turns out, one blade of pink grass doesn't look all that different from the rest. Was she moving forwards? Backwards? Somewhere? Anywhere?

Next time, she'd eat less cake. Or was it the vegetable juice? Or maybe more cake and less juice? More juice and no cake at all? Someone should leave instructions.

A few seconds later, or maybe a few minutes or hours….? Some time later, Miku stepped out into a clearing. The pink grass turned green and rapidly shortened to the height of her knees. Pleased by the fact that she could finally see in front of her, Miku continued on her way, no really knowing where she was going, but heading there anyways.

The vegetation grew wilder. Sprouting from every angle, growing on every possible surface, her walk became increasingly difficult. Climbing over sprawling tree roots and ducking over leaves larger than her head, Miku realized that the world is so much bigger when you're so much smaller. If only Alice knew.

Alice: Lost and Confused

Stepping into yet another clearing, the first thing that Miku noticed was the giant mushroom sitting in the middle of it. With a red top and a cream stem, it was almost comical as to how stereotypical it was. The colors were right out of a book.

Sitting on top of the mushroom was a man…caterpillar…..thing….

He was a man because, well, he couldn't not be a man. Wearing a business suit and a dark blue tiw, a cigarette hung lazily from his human hand. Gazing at her with disinterest through chestnut colored eyes, he was definitely a man….at least from the waist up.

Because from the waist down, he was a caterpillar through and through. Vaguely, Miku wondered how that all worked out. But Miku had to remind herself that she was in a dream. And anything could happen in a dream, even hybrid caterpillar men. All she could hope was that he wouldn't try to kill her.

Deciding to take her chances, Miku approached the mushroom, standing at a relatively safe distance, which really wasn't too far at all. After all, he was a caterpillar. How fast could he move? Wait…but what if he had a gun? Did caterpillars even know how to use guns? But he was part human too, so maybe that part of him knew?

Struggling with her thoughts, Miku blurted out, "Did you see a doll run by?"

Sunlight glinting sharply from his glasses the caterpillar-man took a drag from his cigarette, not answering at all. Fidgeting quite obviously, Miku debated about whether she should ask again or leave. But how would she ever find her doll?

Opening her lips, the caterpillar exhaled, unleashing a cloud of smoke right in her face. Through the haze, she heard the words, "Who are you?"

Coughing on the smoke, eyes watering, Miku choked out, "Miku. My name is Miku Hatsune."

Looking down on her thoughtfully, his chestnut eyes bore into her skin. "Huh. You look like an Alice to me. Are you sure you're not confused?"

Too agitated to pay attention to the burn in her lungs, Miku retorted, "Of course I'm not confused! My name is Miku! It has always been Miku and it will always be Miku. I know who I am!"

"But do you really? Are you sure about that? Do you really know how you are? Or is that a lie you like to tell yourself? Tell me Alice: who are you really?"

Throwing her hands up, Miku threw back, "Didn't I just tell you? I'm Miku! Miku Hatsune! Not Alice or any other name that you think I am. Mi-ku!"

"Then tell me 'Miku': Why are you lost? Why are you lost in Wonderland of all places? Only an Alice could get lost here. Can you really say you know yourself best?"

Trembling from the anger boiling under her skin, Miku hissed out, "I'm not lost. I just don't have a destination in mind."

"Is there really a difference?"

"Yes! There is!"

"Then tell me Alice, why are you so angry right now?"

She barely knew the answer herself. Why was she so angry anyways? What did it matter that some weird caterpillar man thing thought her name was Alice? So what if she was lost? Why was she so upset? Struggling to find the words to explain the feeling churning under her chest, Miku awkwardly exclaimed, "Because you're infuriating! Questioning who I am, or what I am…I didn't ask for this! All I wanted was to keep hold of the important things! Why is that so hard around here? It was never supposed to be this difficult!"

"Well maybe that's your problem right there." Eyes cold and uncaring, the man blew another cloud of smoke in her face. Suffocating on his accusations, Miku stormed away, angry, insulted, infuriated, confused.

What a silly girl Alice is, working so hard just to avoid herself.

Alice: Lost, Not Yet Found

Miku did not get far. Storming through the vegetation in her way, she almost ended up crashing into a small girl…with butterfly wings. But of course. Because she couldn't just be a normal little girl in the woods. There had butterfly wings involved.

Looking up at her with large brown eyes, the little girl begged, "Don't be mad at Papa." Papa? The chain smoking caterpillar guy? "Papa just wants Alice to be ok." As if. "Papa says that Wonderland is not safe for Alices. Papa says there are too many bad endings and not enough good ones. Papa promised he'd explain it to Yuki when Yuki grows up." Wait...explain what? "But you know? Yuki remembers when Papa found his Alice, a long time ago. Every time he held Yuki's hand, there would be blood under his fingernails. Papa said Yuki would understand when she's older. But Papa's Alice went away a long time ago and Yuki still doesn't know why. Yuki still wonders why…But don't worry! Yuki is sure you'll be fine. Yuki will even help you! Here!"

Digging into the pockets of her red schooldress, the girl pulled out two pieces of…something. "Papa gave Yuki these. Papa says one makes you bigger and one makes you smaller. Maybe it'll help."

Placing the chunks of what looked like mushroom in Miku's hands, the little girl balanced on her toes and placed a kiss on Miku's cheek. "Please be careful Alice. You are more lost than you think you are. And because you are lost, you will get found. Just…whatever you do….don't get found by the hatter. Ok?" Again with the Hatter...

Lifting one of Miku's hands, Miku really had no choice but to take a bite of it. Growing larger, Yuki grew smaller. Standing tall, a tiny butterfly fluttered away, towards its home, perhaps. Staring at the tiny bits of mushroom in her hands, Miku wondered how much of what the little girl said was actually true. Alices? Bad ends? Good ends? In the place called Wonderland, Miku found that nothing really made sense. But she did know one thing for sure - she didn't want to stick around and wait until it did.

Placing the tiny pieces of mushroom in her pocket, Miku stepped off with her destination unknown.

If only Alice listened.
