Without warning her chest began to ache and the hot, angry tears slid down her cheeks. She quickly turned away from him, feeling more ashamed than ever before. But before she could allow a sob to escape, she found herself in his arms, the recipient of a gentle and warm hug. She sniffled, cradling her body against his.
He moved her back and forth, a silent dance of love in the dimness of the living room. "I'm so sorry, my love." He said softly. "I didn't mean to lose my temper or frighten you. I just… I love you so much and I worry about you every day. I know it's ridiculous since you have proven again and again what a strong woman you are, perfectly capable of taking care of yourself. But when you were sick I felt so helpless and… well, I didn't tell you this before, but I was so scared."
She raised her head and looked at him in amazement. "You were? But why?"
"I was afraid that I'd lose you."
Overcome with love for him, she tightened her hold on him, never wanting to let go. But all too soon she felt him pull out of her arms.
"I really should go. I can't afford to lose this patient. We're making excellent progress and the fact that he's willing to come in early is a good sign. He was… difficult at first, but now…"
She silenced him by placing her fingers over his lips. "You shouldn't discuss your patients. I learned that a long time ago, the hard way. You're a brilliant man and you've helped so many people. I couldn't be more proud of you if I tried. And if you need to work extra hours, I'll support you fully. David and I are so grateful for the love that you show us every day."
"I love you too Daphne. And I am sorry. But promise me that you'll take it easy and get some rest, all right?"
She smiled and nodded. "All right."
"And if David gets to be too much for you, call Dad and Ronee or Roz. I don't want you to endure too much stress, no matter how wonderful our son is. He's still an infant and they require a lot of care at this stage of their lives. But I can never thank you enough for bringing him into our lives."
She pulled him toward her and kissed him tenderly. "I love you, Niles. And I promise I'll take it easy."
"I love you too, my angel. I'll see you tonight."
When Niles was gone, she sighed, missing him already. But then she smiled and hurried upstairs to the nursery where she lifted David from his crib and kissed his cheek. "I'm sorry to disturb your playtime, darling but we need to get you dressed and ready to go out. We're going to do something special for Daddy."
