Chapter 2

Sibling Rivalry

The next day, Nightpaw just couldn't stop thinking about Silvershade. As she laid in her nest in the apprentice's den, an orange tabby tom stood at the entrance.

"Nightpaw, are you awake?" the orange tabby said as he entered the den. Nightpaw's head shot up to look at the orange tabby.

"Blazestar!" Nightpaw shouted walking over to him and pressing her muzzle in his neck.

"Haha. I'm surprised that you're happy to see me." Blazestar said putting his muzzle on Nightpaw's head. Nightpaw looked up at him.

"Why wouldn't I be happy to see you?" Nightpaw asked in confusion.

"Well Icepaw said you were mad at me because I wasn't spending as much time with you lately." Blazestar said. Nightpaw backed up and put her head down.

"I knew Icepaw couldn't keep a secret," she mumbled as Blazestar walked closer to her.

"Nightpaw, you know as leader of Thunderclan, I have alot of responsibilities and sometimes those responsibilites keep me away from my family. Even when I can't be with you, I still love you." Blazestar said putting his muzzle against her neck.

"I know daddy. I love you too." Nightpaw said pushing her muzzle against Blazestar's neck. Blazestar raised his head and looked at Nightpaw.

"So, are you ready to go?" Blazestar said. Nightpaw raised her head up in confusion. She had completely forgot about her training. She nodded and then she followed Blazestar out of the apprentice's den and over to the camp's entrance. Where Dirtpaw and Whitetail were waiting for them.

"Blazestar! Why do I have to train with HER!" Dirtpaw said glaring at Nightpaw.

"Dirtpaw! Be nice to your sister." Blazestar said glaring at Dirtpaw. Dirtpaw just turned away. Dirtpaw is Nightpaw's brother. Nightpaw and Dirtpaw never got along. Nightpaw could never understand why Dirtpaw hated her. He just did.

"I'm sorry Blazestar. I've been trying to teach him about respect but obviously my lessons haven't been sinking in." Whitetail said while glaring at Dirtpaw. Dirtpaw just looked away.

"It's alright Whitetail. He will learn soon enough." Blazestar said looking over at Dirtpaw with kindness in his eyes but Dirtpaw just kept looking the other way.

"Alright. Let's go." Blazestar said leading the way out of the camp. The grass was still wet with the fresh morning dew. The sun was shining through the trees. The forest seemed full of life. As Nightpaw was admiring the sounds of the forest, she bumped into Blazestar who suddenly stopped. She looked up at her mentor then she looked in front of him. There was nothing there, but then she smelled the scent of Shadowclan cats. They were still so close to camp. How could Shadowclan cats get this far without being noticed? Nightpaw thought. Then with a flick of Blazestar's tail, the group hid in the bushes. They waited there until they saw the Shadowclan cats coming up the path. There were four. Three warriors and one apprentice. The apprentice was a small black and white shecat. Infront of her was a red spotted tom and a brown tom. The cat leading the others was a brown shecat. Blazestar stepped out of the bushes to face the shadowclan cats and signaled Nightpaw and the others to do the same.

"Maplestar. What brings you to Thunderclan territory?" Blazestar said cautiously to the brown shecat.

"Blazestar. You're just the cat I wanted to see." Maplestar said with a smile.

"Come with us. We will discuss this at camp." Blazestar said turning toward camp.

"Very well Blazestar." Maplestar said. Then Blazestar lead the way as the other cats followed him back to camp. As Nightpaw followed, she looked back at the Shadowclan apprentice. She realized she had the same feeling looking at the apprentice that she got when she looked at Silvershade. Nightpaw walked a little faster til she was next to Dirtpaw.

"Hey Dirtpaw!" Nightpaw whispered Dirtpaw looked over at her.

"What do you want now?" Dirtpaw whispered annoyed.

"Who is that apprentice from Shadowclan?" Nightpaw whispered. Dirtpaw sighed.

"You don't know anything do you? That's Mossypaw and that brown tom is Spiderleaf, her mentor. The red spotted tom is Oakfur, Shadowclan's medicine cat. But the real question is what are they doing here and what do they want from us." Dirtpaw whispered. Nightpaw was wondering the same thing. As they continued to walk back to camp, Nightpaw kept thinking about Silvershade and Mossypaw. She couldn't shake the feeling that they were connected some how.

When they arrived at the camp entrance, Blazestar went first and the rest followed. When they entered camp, everyone in it was staring at the Shadowclan cats. Blazestar stopped outside of the leader's den.

"Whitetail, continue Dirtpaw and Nightpaw's training. I will join you in a bit." Blazestar said as he and Maplestar went inside the den. Spiderleaf, Oakfur, and Mossypaw sat outside of the den. Nightpaw stomped her paw in frustration.

"Ugh. This always happens. He never has time for me." Nightpaw hissed at the ground.

"At least he pays attention to you! Half the time he doesn't even know I'm alive! He never spends time with me! It's always you you YOU!" Dirtpaw yelled at Nightpaw. Nightpaw turned to him.

"Is that why you hate me? You're jealous because Blazestar pays more attention to me than you?" Nightpaw said.

"Jealous of you? You have got to be joking. Why would I ever be jealous of YOU! You suck at fighting, you're a big baby, and you're a sorry excuse for a hunter!" Dirtpaw hissed.

"Well you're a sorry excuse of a brother!" Nightpaw hissed back.

"Hey, hey calm down before someone says something they'll regret." Whitetail said stepping in. Dirtpaw stuck his nose up and started to walk away.

"I'm not your brother." He said as he headed for the fresh kill pile near the leader's den. Nightpaw just stood there with her head down. Nice one Nightpaw. Yelling at him is sure to get him to like you. Nightpaw just sighed and looked up at Whitetail.

"Don't worry Nightpaw. I'll have a talk with him later. Why don't you just get forget about training today. I'll talk to Blazestar about it later." Whitetail said walking away.

Nightpaw just shook it off and headed to the nursery. Maybe seeing Brightfeather's kits will cheer me up. Nightpaw looked inside of the nursery and saw a calico shecat with three little kits. Brightfeather looked up at Nightpaw with a smile.

"Well hello Nightpaw. Have you come to see my kits?" Brightfeather said with a smile. Nightpaw walked in just enough to see three little kits laying next to thier mother's belly.

"Yes i did. If that's ok." Nightpaw said. Brightfeather stood up.

"Oh it's fine dear. I'm just waiting for your mother to take over watching them while I speak to Whitetail." Brightfeather said. Whitetail is the father of Brightfeather's kits. Nightpaw looked at the little balls of fluff as they suckled from their mother. Just then, Blueclaw poked her head in the nursery.

"Am I interrupting anything?" Blueclaw said.

"Not at all dear. Come on in. I was just talking to Nightpaw here." Brightfeather said with a smile.

"Well, we can watch them while you go talk to Whitetail." Blueclaw said sitting down by Brightfeather's nest.

"Oh thank you Blueclaw. I won't be long." Brightfeather said walking out of the nursery. Blueclaw layed down with the three kits as they slept beside her. Nightpaw sat at the entrance and watched them. Blueclaw looked at the kits then she looked up at Nightpaw.

"They remind me of when you were little." Blueclaw said with a smile.

"Really?" Nightpaw said surprised.

"Yeah. You were so little compared to Dirtpaw and Icepaw. You were stubborn too. You always had to be different. Haha but sometimes that got you into trouble. But i loved all three of you so much and i still do. I know your brother can be very mean to you sometimes but deep down he really does care about you." Blueclaw said. Nightpaw just sighed.

"Well if he does, he sure has a funny way of showing it." Nightpaw said whipping her tail back and forth.

"Don't worry sweety. He will come around eventually." Blueclaw said licking one of the kits behind the ears. Nightpaw just continued to sit there thinking about if Dirtpaw would ever accept her.
