Chapter 4
Humphrey woke up to a howl in the distance. It was still the middle of night though. The howl sounded very familiar. It was Kate's, and from the sound of it, she was getting closer. It didn't matter though, she would never find him. Suddenly he noticed a flicker of movement in the dark woods below. "Humphrey!" Kate shouted joyfully, running towards him, he sprinted off in the opposite direction. Running as fast as he could, he didn't have the heart or courage to tell her yet. He ran as fast as his legs would carry him. He couldn't let her catch up to him. He looked back, Kate wasn't behind him. "good. I lost her." he panted before turning around just in time to Kate burst out from behind a nearby tree, surprising him. Humphrey rammed her in the side, and while she was getting up, Humphrey had gotten away. Humphrey's behavior was confusing her. She thought he would be happy to see her. "why did he try to run away from me?" she asked looking around for him. Great she had lost his scent as well. All she could do now is just guess which way he had gone. So she picked a random direction and headed in that direction, only one thing on her mind.
Humphrey watched from the nearby bushes as Kate headed away from him. "I'm sorry Kate; I'm just not ready yet. I need some time." he whispered to himself as he silently turned around and started walking.
