Adams POV
I stood leaving the room after Dc. Jared came back in and I told him Daniel had woken for a bit, he nodded and went to check in on the boy. I went out the door, Beth on my heels.
"Adam." She said grabbing my attention, I turned to face her. "Did he say anything?" She asked I remained silent, having still not a full handle on my emotions. "Big brother," She said sternly, yet gently while walking forward and placing a hand lightly on my arm. She knew, Beth had gotten good at that, being able to tell when something upset me, or one of her other brothers. She knew Daniel had spoken, and she knew I didn't have a handle on the turmoil of emotions raging inside. The fear, the anger, the desperation… The hatred.
I bowed my head while taking my hand lying on top of the one of hers she had resting on my arm. Closing my eyes we stood there for a moment until we heard the sound of horses approaching, only then did I lift my head, hopeful that it would be my children.
It wasn't, Pa and my brothers had rode into the yard, each holding grave faces, while all also held a look that said they wanted to head back out again, search more.
"No sign of them yet Adam." Pa said getting off Buck he walked over to me placing a hand on my shoulder, before glancing between me and Beth. I didn't have to look at his eyes to know that he guessed there to be something wrong.
After I nodded I turned heading to the barn, my family following behind me, leading there horses if they had one at the moment, once inside I leaned against the wall running a hand over my face. "Daniel woke up, not for long but he woke." I said lowly gaining there attention. "He told me what happened." I said softly and began to explain what my son had said. "$5000 the price for both my children but I only receive one." I finished repeating the money once more while closing my eyes. "I can't allow Daniel to deliver the money, it would be dangerous and I can't trust the people."
"But if you don't Grayson and Felicity die." Joe spoke venomously; I knew his anger was surprisingly not directed at me, but at the men who took his niece and nephew.
"Where did he have to meet them at?" Hoss asked leaning against the top of a stall door.
"The South side of Lake Tahoe," I answered frowning.
"That would be longer then a day's ride wouldn't it?" Beth asks astonished. "That's even further then Carson City." She said shaking her head "Sounds more like a trick."
No one spoke for a moment all silent while lost in thought.
"Well what do we do, usually we would be sneaking up on he people who held one of us captive, but with it being the South Side of Lake Tahoe, and us not even being remotely sure…" Beth said running a hand into her hair as she willed her mind to think.
Graysons POV
"Daniel?" I muttered to myself blinking my eyes open only to be stuck in darkness. "Felicity?" I asked again louder searching for my baby sister, as I started to recall what had happened earlier.
"One of the brats are waking up." A gruff voice spoke. I struggled to get up, to see. It took me a few moments to fully come to and realize that I had a cloth over my eyes, and my hands were tied behind my back, and ankles also tied together.
"That's fine, the kid doesn't know where he's at anyways, and we're far enough now no one notice." Another voice spoke, this one not as gruff, but it was thick, and held a heavy accent. "When Jeramiah going to be meeting up with us?" The same voice asked.
"He should be headed this direction, I'm sure it didn't take long to give the oldest Cartwright kid a talking to and convince him to deliver a message to his father." The gruff voice responded. Grayson froze for a moment his head turning in different directions trying to locate the voice. I couldn't recognize the voice, but if I had to take a guess Jeramiah was the one who lassoed Daniel.
"Where's Felicity." I asked trying to sound mean, to sound like I would hurt them, I just heard one of the men laugh though.
"Your sisters fine boy, for now. As long as your father comes through she should remain fine, the same for you." It was the man with the heavy accent, I placed the accent to be foreign, not like Hop Sing though, it came from somewhere else.
"Please sir… where's my sister?' I asked trying to get the cloth from around my eyes, but didn't have my hands to do so. I felt a hand hit me against my head knocking me to the side a bit.
"Stop that." The accented man said, "And shut up." He sounded angry.
"Ahh there's Jeramiah now…" The other voice spoke; I lifted my head turning it towards the sound of a horse. "Took you long enough didn't it, surely the brat didn't take that long to sort out, it's almost nightfall now."
"Of course he didn't, I just hung around towns all… to see how fast rumor got around and to make sure no one saw any of us and took suspicion." I recognized that voice; it was the man who had roped Daniel. Did he hurt my brother?
"Well bout time either way… this one here's awake, the girl still seems to be out." The man with the gruff voice spoke, I heard someone hit the ground and presumed it was the man… Jeramiah… was getting off his horse.
I felt a hand grasp hold of my cheeks turning my head. "Hmm, put him on the boat, he seems sturdy enough to last for a while. We'll give the girl back if they follow through with the money; this one here just depends on old' Adams actions, even if he doesn't follow through and tries anything this one is are wager." He said releasing me, I shrunk back some suddenly worried. Why was I being put on a boat? And where were they going to take Felicity?
"Please sir, I want to see my sister. What are you going to do?" I asked struggling against the ropes holding my hands. Pa wasn't here, that would leave Daniel in charge, but Daniel wasn't here so that left me to protect my baby sister. But I felt I couldn't do it, after all what's a nine year old able to do, and I wasn't nowhere near as tough as Daniel after all.
"Well he certainly has more manners then his brother." Jeramiah laughed, but other words ignored.
"I said shut up kid." The man with the accent said once more, cuffing me in the head once more, a whimper slipped past my lips and tears sprang to my eyes, but I refused to let them fall. "He hasn't shut up about his sister since he woke up."
"Really now, I can solve that." Jeramiah said, "Hold his head up will you." He ordered. A large hand hooked into my hair pulling my head up in back, I cried out feeling some of my hair pulling out of my scalp I didn't felt a piece of cloth go into my mouth before being tied tightly around my head. The hand disappeared and my head dropped back to where it was hitting the ground lightly.
'Pa where are you?' I thought to myself honestly scarred. 'I'm ashamed Pa, I shouldn't be scarred, and Daniel would have stood up better. Pa don't be disappointed… and please come fast.' I was thinking to myself still. 'Me and Felicity need you…' I felt more tears enter my eyes as I didn't know where Felicity was, but I knew she had to be around me somewhere. From how the men were speaking she was around somewhere just still unconscious.
