Chapter 4

Aelan frowned as she raided her clothing drawer. She normally didn't dress fancy, but for the Music Festival she made an exception. She groaned as she realized she didn't have anything to wear and it was the day of the festival. To make matters worse she hadn't told anyone that she would be participating and had planned to keep it that way.

I know! she thought, having a bright idea. I'll just go to Yuri's shop and lie about why I need a dress! That should do it!

She smiled at her idea and quickly walked out the door, shutting it behind her. Thank God I put the Tailor's next to Emma's house! Aelan thought as she ran over and burst through the door. Yuri calmly stood at the counter, raising a questioning brow at Aelan's haste.

"Hello…What do you want?" Yuri asked, distant as always. Aelan closed her eyes and stuttered slightly as she steeled herself. "I-I need…I n-need…a…I need a d-dress!" she finally burst out, covering her face.

Yuri coughed once in surprise, and blinked her eyes very quickly. Aelan has asked for a…dress?! She thought, her mind immediately jumping to dozens of possibilities of what would go with Aelan's eyes and hair. She bustled around, asking no questions, for which Aelan was surprised but grateful. Anyone else would have either burst out laughing, asked her to repeat herself, or raised an eyebrow before continuing their work. Yuri simply took her work so seriously and passionately, she was already thinking about clothes, not wondering why Aelan had asked for such a thing.

"What sort of thing are you looking for?" Yuri called out from the back.

"Uhh…Well…I'm not very good with stuff like this…maybe something fancy?" Something that Allen will like, her mind whispered, and her eyes widened and she blushed as Yuri came around. "Sorry, I didn't catch that last part. What did you say?"

Aelan flushed. "U-umm, nothing, nothing at all! I just wanted something formal, that's all!" she said. Yuri's eyes suddenly started twinkling and she smiled softly. "Something that Allen would like, huh?" she said. Aelan blushed. "Now whatever gave you that idea?" she said.

Yuri smiled. "Just a hunch…"

Damn, she's either a mind-reader, or it's obvious I like him…wait no, what am I saying? He's an arrogant jerk who won't leave me alone about my hair and thinks he's too good for everyone. I'd never like a guy like that!

While Aelan waged her mental battle, Yuri came out of the back holding two outfits. "Well now, which one of these do you like better?" she asked Aelan. Aelan took a step back. Those outfits had way too many ruffles!

"Whoa, wait," she said. "I get that I asked for fancy, but this?!" Yuri smiled. "It's to impress Allen, right? I happen to know he likes this…maid outfit."

Aelan opened her mouth, then closed it. She was caught between a rock and a hard place. Impress Allen, or wear something that no doubt would be just as fancy, only not as girly? No contest. "I-I'll take it," Aelan finally said, putting her money down on the counter, grabbing the outfit, and running out of the shop before Yuri could say anything more.

Yuri stared after the girl in surprise, before closing her eyes and shaking her head with a small smile. Aelan was…predictable, yet in an odd way. At first, she seemed totally unpredictable, but when you got to know her, her randomness settled into a pattern, and as soon as you had solved it, well…then she was defenseless.

Aelan sighed as she finished making the Genovese pasta. It had become like a ritual for her, ever since the Music Festival. She'd make soup and take it over to Allen for his lunch, he would smile and compliment her on her taste, eat it, and then shoo her off so he could get work done. Today however, was different. Today she'd made him an old pasta dish that had been in her family for a while now. She hated it, but she thought she'd give it a try, seeing as everyone else seemed to like it well enough, even Neil. And, she had a feeling Allen might be getting tired of soup, no matter how good it was.

She packed it in a bag, then skipped over to the salon. However, she frowned when she noted the sign said, CLOSED. She knocked, before pushing slightly, and realized the door was unlocked. Her frown went deeper as she noticed no sign of Allen, so she went upstairs.

She sighed in relief as she saw Allen standing in front of the mirror, but he wasn't looking at his reflection. He seemed to be pondering something, but turned around and smiled when Aelan walked inside.

"Hey Aelan! Here to see me? That's what I thought; you never can stay away for long can you?" he teased. Aelan felt her face go a shade of bright red, and her eyes widened. Why am I blushing? She wondered. She unconsciously listed the reasons why she could have been blushing.

He said something to embarrass me…no, that's not it. That's how he greets me every day! So then…we are in an awkward moment…haha, no way…so then, what is it? Could it be I…like him? No way!

But even as her brain denied it, she found herself listing off reasons why she liked Allen. Sure, she'd thought he was a cocky jerk in the beginning, but…

He's cute…he's confident…he has that annoying, ever present smirk…yet, I look forward to seeing him every day…He likes my food…At the Music Festival, he…he…

Aelan found herself blushing at the memory.

She'd changed into her festival clothes…gone early so she could practice…she'd listened to all the others in a blur…her name was called; she stepped up, legs shaking… slowly making her way to the piano…she sat down, placing her hands on the black and white keys…Beginning to play.

Losing herself in the song, playing her heart out, smiling as she entered her favorite phrase…all with those piercing blue eyes watching her. And then…then, after the Festival…she'd gone to socialize…she bumped into someone…started to apologize…

A hand was held out to her and she looked up, her face flushing as she realized it was Allen…she glared at his hand and stood up by herself, dusting her skirt off…and as she was about to leave…

"I like that outfit." And then, lips lightly brushing the shell of her ear…she shivered…and he was gone, off to talk to other performers…nothing about her outstanding performance, which even Neil complimented her on in his own way…just, 'I like that outfit', a compliment which she would've hated any day.

But…coming from Allen…She didn't know why it meant so much to her, only that it did, and two thoughts were in her head. One was, HE KISSED ME! And the other…the other one was, 'Yuri was right.'

Aelan shook herself as Allen kept talking. "Perfect timing, actually, I've got something I want to talk to you about. But, here's really not the place so…follow me!"

Aelan blinked as Allen set a quick pace for the exit to the room, and he was out the door even before Aelan could yell, "Wait for me!"

Eventually, she caught up with him at the mountaintop, and felt some deja-vu as Allen said, "Finally caught up to me, huh? Ya know, with you being a farmer and all, I would've thought you'd beat me here! But, now I see I've overestimated you…" he chuckled as Aelan glared at him.

"Hey! It's not my fault you're so tall…er, I mean, that you're so much taller than me!" she hurried to cover up her mistake. Allen chuckled. "Come now, don't deny it. You're attracted to me, I know it."

Somehow, this flirty statement seemed to hold more weight than his others, but Aelan paid it no mind as she quickly denied what he'd said.

"Like hell!" she said, crossing her arms over her chest with a scowl that couldn't force a turtle in its shell.

Allen's eyes turned sharp suddenly and said, "You don't mean that…"

Aelan's eyes widened. "Look, what's this all about?" she asked him outright, tired of all the beating around the bush. Allen paused, looking as though he hadn't expected her to hurry him.

"Hn? Well, it's just that…You come and talk with me a lot, huh? Something about me interest you?" he smirked and flipped his hair.

"H-huh?!" Aelan said, but Allen continued on, oblivious.

"You know Aelan…lately, a lot of people have asked me if we're dating. And it's sure a pain denying it all the time, so…" he sighed and looked her straight in the eye.

"Look, what I'm trying to say is…I think it might be best if we really go out with each other."

Aelan's eyes widened to the size of saucers as she gaped at Allen. "Are you—are you messing with me?" she asked him, hands on her hips in a very Allen-like gesture. Said man chuckled.

"Well, you don't want me to be, right? You want me to be serious? So…will you be my girl? I promise not to hurt you. Oh, and by the way, 'fish out of water' isn't a very good look for you."

Aelan continued gaping, regardless of his comment and blushed a shade of tomato red.

Is this guy for real? She wondered. Well, better take my chances…

She flushed even brighter as she turned her head away and squeezed her eyes shut. "Yes," she whispered. Allen chuckled. "I can't hear you!"

"Yes!" she said, more emphatically this time.

"Sorry, what was that?"

"Yes you moron, I will go out with you, now stop making me repeat myself!" she yelled.

Allen smirked and turned her head towards him, leaning in close. "You're so cute when you're mad," he said. Aelan flushed at the contact and space between them, and unconsciously leaned forward…and just like that Allen was gone, strutting down the mountain path.

"See you later, doll!" he called out, disappearing as he rounded a corner leaving Aelan staring after him, leaning into empty air.

Damn that cocky bastard…she glared, but couldn't stop the goofy smile that spread across her face at the thought that finally, she was actually going out with Allen. It was only then she remembered the Genovese pasta dish that was in her backpack. Quickly she pulled it out, only to find it had been ruined. "Damn you Allen!" she cursed, marching back to her farmhouse to make something else for lunch.
