Chapter Four

Ferb was finishing with disassembling the larger than life arcade games. Phineas had gone into the house to make them some drinks. Suddenly a red beam shot out of the sky out of nowhere and hit a piece of machinery Ferb had been working on. Then everything was red and hot.

When Phineas heard a huge explosion outside he turned, dropping the pitcher of grape juice and ran outside. "Ferb!" He looked at the backyard in horrified awe. Everything was on fire. "FERB!"

Phineas ran to the hose and turned on the water. Coughing he turned on the sprinklers. Tears were already streaming down his face. After so many inventions had disappeared due to strange things the brothers had started to prepared for anything. Of all the things they had prepared for, one of them being in an explosion was not one of those plans. As the water hit the flames smoke started to filled the air.

Phineas continued coughing as he yelled out for his brother, "Ferb can you hear me, bro!" The smoke was so thick Phineas couldn't see two feet into it. There was no answer. Not even a scream.

He pulled out his phone and called 911. After he explained to the dispatch the emergency he then called Isabella. He knew he should have called his parents or Candace but he really needed someone with him until they got there and Isabella was the first person who came to mind.

"Hi Phinny," she answered in her usually cheerful voice, "Wha' cha doin'?"

Phineas dreaded what he had to tell her. "I need you to come over to my house! There's been an explosion!" He voice didn't sound right. It was too broken.

His girlfriend noticed. "Oh my gosh! I'll be right there! Have you called the police?"

"Yes, yes I did. Please hurry. Ferb's-" The line went dead. "Isabella? Isabella?!"

"I'm here Phineas!" He looked to see her walk through the gate and stop. "Oh. My. God."

"Isabella," Phineas was crying now. He never cried. "Ferb was...Ferb was...I just left for a second to talk to mom." His teary eyes widened. "Oh my gosh. MOM! DAD!" He began pulling up their numbers on his phone and called them.

Vanessa Doofenshmirtz was waiting outside VOWS with Candace and their mothers when Mrs. Flynn-Fletcher got the phone call. Vanessa's father hadn't shown up yet, nor had her best goth girlfriend and maid of honor Amy. As soon as they got the news, she made the decision to cancel the appointment. She had to get the the Ferb's place and see it all for herself.

Candace was in shock that her old busting habit kicked in. "See mom? This is way I kept trying to tell you about the stuff the boys did every day. I knew something terrible was going to happen and it did."

Linda Flynn-Fletcher looked at her daughter sternly as they got in the car. "Candace, don't start that up again. We don't know if one of your brothers inventions went amiss, although I sincerely doubt it." She had come to know that her boys were talented inventors seen them do grand things but she had never seen any of the really dangerous and crazy things that Candace had.

"You never believed me, but now you will! Oh and when we get home I'm gonna make 'em tell you exactly what happened."

A fire truck with two police cars and an ambulance passed them. Everyone got a dark feeling in the pit of their stomachs.

Vanessa was unable to make a sound as the four vehicles passed. She gave her motorbike a bit more gas. They other women put their feet on their gas pedal harder and raced to keep up.

They saw the smoke. Vanessa almost lost control and had to pull over. Her mother pulled over and opened the door. Without a word the twenty-four year old jumped in before the car had even stopped. She pulled out her phone and told Amy the dress shopping had been canceled. As soon as they got to the house she was out before her mother could stop and ran for the backyard. Linda and Candace pulled up and began talking with the officers Candace followed Vanessa.

A phone rang. Charlene saw Vanessa had left her phone in the car. It was Heinz. She knew she had to tell him. Taking a deep breath she pressed the answer button.

"Vanessa? Are you there? It's me Heinz listen I'm at the dress place but no one is here. Am I early or-?" He stopped taking when he heard a sound on the other end.

"FERB! NO!" Vanessa's voice blasted from the backyard.

"WHAT DID YOU DO?!" Candace's voice followed. Linda and the police officer ran to the gate.

Heinz asked, "Vanessa are you alright?"

"Please Heinz," his ex-wife was crying now. "There's been an accident."

"Charlene!? Where's Vanessa? What happened? Is she hurt?!"

"It's Ferb. Ferb's been in an accident."

Just as she said that Perry was landing behind a car parked across the street. He had raced home after he had accidentally pressed the fire button on Doof's strange new inator. There had been a usual green ray

that fired and then the explosion happened. Perry had hoped the boys were safe as he got in his hover-car. Now he knew better. This was all his fault.

The fire was put under control fairly quickly. Two paramedics went in as soon as they got the clear with a stretcher. A policewoman had to hold Phineas back to keep him from getting in the way. When the men came back Ferb was on the stretcher. Her was covered in burns and was smoking. His hair was smoking too. He had his eyes shut.

"Ferb!" As soon as he saw his brother Phineas fought the police officer who let him go. He came to his brother's side and felt sick.

"We need to cool him down," said one of the medics.

"We need to get him the hospital," said the other.

"Can I come?" Phineas asked?

The first medic looked at him. "Sure, kid. You can ride with us."

Everyone wanted to go. Isabella got in Candace's car. Candace pulled away and followed the white vehicle. Charlene told Heinz to meet them at the hospital as Vanessa-too in shock to even notice her mom was using her phone got in.

Linda was left standing in the driveway. Before leaving she called her husband Lawrence . She knew he couldn't get there 'cause he was in London giving a lecture but she needed to hear his voice.

"Hello dear," he said in a happy voice that made Linda cry even more that she already was. "Everything's going great. Just finished my speech on the Hongie tribe. How's everything stateside?"

"Oh Lawrence I wish you were here. Ferb's just had to be taken to the hospital." She told him everything that had happened.

When her husband spoke it was with a voice that was different. Like he was remembering something. "A fire you say?"

She noticed the change in his voice. "Lawrence?"

"My plane leaves tomorrow dear. I'll be home soon."

"Lawrence what are you not telling me?"

"Linda darling, please."

"Tell me," she said sternly.

He sighed, not wanted to answer but knowing he had to. "Do you remember my wife before you? Ferb's biological mother?"

"Karlie, yes I remember her. We went to high school together."

"She...died in a fire."
