Chapter 4
Samus awoke with a start.
Where am I? She wondered.
She was in an area blanketed with snow, seemingly without a single sign of life anywhere. A blizzard was raging around her, the wind buffeting the audio receptors on her helmet.
Despite the sensory overload, her thoughts drifted back to what had happened.
She had been on her way to eradicate a small pirate base on an asteroid; it had turned out that a few groups of pirates had escaped to the borders of Federation space post the destruction of Zebes. In the last few years a few of these splinter groups had started to rebuild and were conducting raids on colony worlds. Naturally the Federation had hired her to sort this out for them, their own command structure shattered post the Bottle ship incident.
About 2000 miles from her destination, a wormhole opened right in front of her ship, at such short range that it sucked her in before she could so much as react. Not normally one to panic, she calmly tried to pull away from the wormhole, but to no fruition. Her escape attempt was cut short as suddenly she felt an intense stabbing pain in the deepest recesses of her brain, her body completely paralysed to point where she even lost grip on the controls. Everything around her began to go pure white, whiter than even the snow she was lying in.
She jumped to her feet and swung her arm cannon around her, being stranded on alien planets was the norm for her and had taught her to to always survey her surroundings, lest she walk into something dangerous.
Where is my ship? wondered Samus; it was nowhere to be seen and even her thermal visor didn't yield a heat signature to follow.
She decided to explore where she was. She recorded this area in her logbook, as was standard for her. She liked to keep a recorded backlog of her missions so as to touch upon information from past experiences whenever she found herself stuck somewhere.
As she prowled across the light, powdery snow; she saw something from the corner of her eye. She turned around on the spot and aimed her arm cannon at what she had seen, all in one powerful but graceful movement, the snow barely disturbed by her feet. She kept her eyes on it, examining it.
It was quadruped and had a white coat of fur. Samus may not have even seen it if it were not for the red markings along its body and its bright eyes. Samus realised that it was a wolf.
I remember reading about those in history books, I thought that they were extinct... She mused, recalling when Gray Voice would take her to the Chozo's library as a child. Memories like these brought back the warmth and comfort she had only felt when she was growing up, but these feelings had to be pushed aside to focus on what was at hand.
The wolf was looking straight back at her, she could tell from its bright, piercing eyes that it was not a dumb animal. It was evaluating her.
Suddenly, the wolf ran off, quickly as a flash. Where ever it went, a trail of grass followed it.
What the fuck? Wondered Samus, as she tried to process what she had seen.
She decided to follow the wolf, if it was truly intelligent perhaps it could provide the answers that she was looking for. After all, what did she have to lose?
Switching on her Thermal visor so she wouldn't lose it, she ran after the resulting thermal signature as fast as she could.
