I could tell you all of the details of our trip. I could talk about how Mason pissed off this old man when he 'accidentally' groped his wife. Okay, so… I might have pushed him onto the bus and he might have stumbled forward and fallen into her lap. But have I mentioned how stressful this job is yet? Yeah, well when Mason is involved...it's a new level. The plane ride was mostly uneventful, apart from the airport security being kind of a bitch. Once we finally got settled onto the bus I checked my watch. 1:00. I settled back in my seat and looked at the post it again.
"Do you think this Bella girl is going to like being a vampire? I mean, should we warn her or something?"
Mason scratched his head and shrugged. Helpful as always.
"You know it's not our job to decide that, Georgie."
He let out a hiccup. I rolled my eyes and looked out the window. I didn't know what to think. One of the hardest parts of this job was watching everyone else get their lights while I was stuck here for an undetermined amount of time. As terrible as I felt watching other people's lives end, there was always a sense of relief. A sense of closure. They were passing on, and they were at peace. This girl might never be at peace again.
"You nervous?"
Mason asked me after what must have been awhile of silence. I shrugged.
"I dunno... this whole thing is just kind of fucked up, don't you think?"
I didn't wait for an answer.
"I mean…I sure as hell wish someone had warned me that I'd be stuck around here, reaping people's souls for a living."
The same old man raised his eyebrows peeked over his newspaper, his glasses sliding down his nose slightly.
"Uh…rehearsing for a play"
Mason blurted out and laughed nervously, his voice cracked a bit. Smooth. He sounded like how I felt. I rolled my eyes and gave the man a sarcastic smile.
"Yeah…Rent. Newsies? Wicked?"
I shrugged when I saw their reactions. Wasn't my lie. Mason's eyes bugged out of his head.
"Look…"
He leaned closer to me and kept his voice lower than usual.
"All I know is...Rube gave you this assignment for a reason. He must have known you'd be able to handle it. He'd never trust me like that."
There was a slight sound of remorse in his tone. I almost felt sorry for him. But once the bus stopped and I realized we were in Forks, I stood up and climbed over him.
"Get up!"
I tugged at his sleeve and dragged him out of his seat. We still had to find the school. We jumped off the bus and looked around. Well, this should be fun.
"Right, what's the name of the school again?"
Mason shouted over the sound of the growing crowd as he fixed his jacket.
I looked down at the post it to check it, though I didn't have to. I had it memorized.
"Forks High School. I like it. Short, and to the point."
I looked around my surroundings. Was it by the bus stop? Should we ask for help? I turned to get Mason's attention, but he was off on the other end, talking to an attractive woman. What a shock. I closed my eyes tightly and silently counted to ten. This wasn't the time for him to be picking up women. I felt my fist inadvertently clench around the post it before I stormed back over to him.
"Thanks love. Got it."
Mason smiled at the woman and gave her a nod, meeting me halfway.
"What was that about?!"
I held out my hand toward the woman.
"Relax. I was asking her if she knew where the school was. Luckily, she does."
He sounded and looked pretty proud of himself.
"Great."
I smiled sarcastically.
"So can you take us there?"
We were silent for most of the walk to the school. Mason was concentrating on following the woman's directions, and I was focused on how I would find this Bella girl...and how the vampires would be. How can vampires just waltz into a high school unnoticed? How had I not thought to ask Rube this? Wait, vampires can't be out in the sun light, can they? Are they invisible? Would they be in bat form? Would they even be there at all, or would just their presence be felt? I was so lost in my thoughts that I didn't notice Mason had stopped walking, and I once again collided right into his back. I opened my mouth to yell at him, until I noticed where we were. Forks High School. I looked at my watch. It was just before 2:00. I felt my heart pound against my chest as I just stood there and stared at the school.
"Now what?"
I mumbled, mostly to myself.
Mason grabbed my hand and dragged me closer to the school, and we plopped down the grass by the parking lot.
"Now we wait."
I looked around. It was a nice day out. Well, for Seattle. It wasn't raining. Wasn't too cold. I absent-mindedly picked at some blades of grass as we sat there, just waiting.
"Do you think they know that we'll be here?"
Mason asked as he stared up at the clouds, squinting slightly. It wasn't very sunny, but a small ray was shining through. He swatted at a fly that flew near him, but still didn't take his eyes off of the sky. I had to wonder if he expected the vampires to fly down on their broom sticks or something.
"That's witches."
I said out loud before I could catch myself. That made him turn his gaze to me.
"What?"
His face had that oh-so-familiar "I'm confused" look plastered on it. I laughed. Just a little bit.
"Nothing. I don't know. Maybe."
I shrugged.
"I'm more confused about how they blend in. I mean...they're vampires. Don't they have fangs, and pale white skin? OH, and don't they thirst for blood? How do they surround themselves around humans, without being noticed? How do they control their thirst?"
Mason looked worried, but I was filled with questions, and by now I was getting excited. I was going to get to meet real vampires.
It's about time this job had some perks.
