Jack groaned and shoved another useless book back into its place in the library. Turning away he scrubbed his face with his hands.
How big was this library?! He'd already been in here for four hours!
This library needed a directory. Or someone that knew where all the books where and how they were arranged. Or at least have signs saying "This is the section on this" and "This is how this section is organized" because he was positive he wasn't even near the right section.
Jack leaned on a shelf and felt a breath puff past his lips. He pulled a dark blue book with gold calligraphy on it of the shelf and looked at it disinterestedly. The spirits guide to human burial rituals. That wasn't even related to his goal. Well maybe it was, but it wasn't close enough. Burial rituals had to do with how humans dealt with spirits not spirits types.
Jack sighed and slid the book back in its place. He should find a couch to sit on. He'd past one about ten minutes ago that looked comfy. He should sit down and rest his feet. Standing for hours, even if you're a spirit, is not fun and his feet were starting to ache.
Walking back to the couch he'd passed, Jack tried to remember why he was doing this. Yes, to be able to see his friend or at least figure out why he couldn't see them. Jack furrowed his brow. Was his friend a boy or a girl? Or were they one of those mixed gender people? I'll find out when I can see them. Jack decided.
This brought up another thought. If I can't see them, what means any other spirit can? Will there even be any information there? Would there even be a way to communicate with them listed? He hoped there was. If not then he and his friend were going to have to figure out a way. Oh Man in the Moon he hoped no one saw them try to talk to each other before they figured out a good way. He'd look crazy and everyone would think for sure that he'd created a friend in his loneliness. He knew North already thought he did. Jack shook his head. I was lonely, to the point where I would cry, but I was never that lonely.
Jack wondered if he'd like them when he could see them (He decided to ignore the 'if' for now, no point being a pessimist). He hoped so. He knew for a fact that desperation for company leads people to associate with people that aren't always the best for them. Though they seemed like a kind spirit, he didn't think a mean or cruel spirit would try to comfort him each time he cried at his lake.
Ah, Jack spotted the overstuffed, burgundy couch tucked in between two bookshelves. He shuffled over to it quickly and gratefully sank into the soft cushion. Ah, that feels better. Jack stretched his legs, feeling his feet throb faintly now that his weight wasn't on them.
Maybe I should take a nap, Jack thought, realizing for the first time exactly how tired he was. Before he decided to confront his lake spirit – yes, the spirit was his responsibility and that was his lake anyways- he had been moving storm systems since winter was coming soon. Frost was already on the ground in Burgess. Winter may be the time of year he had the most fun, but it was also the time he needed a lot of sleep and naps. He supposed walking around a library and all the general excitement of the hour before hand after spending the entire day moving weather systems was something that he probably shouldn't do again unless he planned on crashing somewhere soon after. Nap it is, Jack decided. My friend can wait for me to take a nap… I wouldn't want to crash in the middle of the lake again…
With that thought, Jack slipped into the deep sleep of one who worked hard.
~Spirits and Wraiths~
Manny watched Jack fall asleep through a large telescope in his study with a smile of relief. Finally. He waved two silver moonbeams over and turned around to watch them flicker and swirl in excitement over its new assignment. As much as he liked Jack and he knew the moon beams did too, they were quite skittish and he needed the moon beams to not mess up. The Valar had finally given the, to use a modern phrase, green light to go through with his idea, and a thing like this needed to be done correctly or there was going to be a loooong clean up and fix it.
Speaking of not messing up, it would not hurt to make sure everything was together again…
Manny moved over to a large desk covered in maps and papers of all sizes. Many were old or showed the changing spirit domains in the world. Manny lifted a particularly yellowed, old one carefully and moved it over the other maps. Valinor it declared in large, browned letters of an ancient script not many spirits even recognized, much less understood. Smiling, Manny carefully rolled it up, placing it in a tube for safety. He hoped Legolas- One tended to find out names when one could see wraiths, plus the Valar had accidentally mentioned it when they found out where the Winter spirit was going to come from- would enjoy it. Nostalgia and comfort would be good for him.
Putting the map tube to his right, Manny next, picked up a large, leather bound book that the Valar had given him. It will help Jack understand elves and their language, they said. They also said the wraiths- elves- had picked up the language used most often in the area the wound up stuck in. Manny eyed the book, noting its weight. He had a feeling it had to do with something else along with linguistics…
Placing the book with the map tube, Manny tried to place his curiosity and suspicions in the back of his head. It was probably history. The history books of the elves in North's library weren't translated and he highly doubted anyone had tried to translate them in hundreds, if not thousands of years.
Lastly Manny picked up a small silvery bag with a tag on it. He read the spell on the tag and looked at the two moon beams before him. Both were moonbeams he knew weren't as skittish as the others. One was a bright, shining silver, almost diamond-like the way it refracted its own light, flickering brightly under his gaze. The other was a deeper silver, like a silver ring, and it flickered in a calmer manner. If he had to compare them, the first would be a rambunctious younger sibling to the older, calmer moonbeam. His mind decided on which would carry what, he motioned the moon beams over with a finger while carefully ripping the part of the tag that had the spell.
Later, Manny watched through his telescope two moon beams that were gracefully arcing their way to Earth, a bright one carrying a tube headed excitedly towards the Burgess Lake, and a deeper silver one with a book swirling its way to the North Pole, whispering a spell to itself.
Manny smiled. So far, so good.
~Spirits and Wraiths~
Legolas walked- or was it gliding? His feet never left a mark, even in the snow- on the frozen surface of the lake, basking in the bright moonlight. It was a calm night, everything was still and the stars were brighter then Legolas had seen in years. He tilted his head up and let the silvery light illuminate his features. The moon is so bright tonight… He thought blearily. I haven't seen it this bright in centuries…
Legolas stopped in the middle of the lake, and let his eyes close. It was strange. He felt almost tired. He hadn't felt the need to sleep in millennia. Why not? Legolas thought. I haven't slept in years… why not have a nap if I can? A small part of his mind told him that the fact that he was tired at all was warning enough to keep his guard up. But the part was easily ignored in the feeling of absolute calm and peace Legolas could feel in the area. Lips pressed in a small smile, Legolas let his eyes close.
The last thing Legolas heard before he slipped into reverie was a faint voice singing softly and seeing a flicker of silvery- white light before his eyes slipped closed.
Alright, new chapter! Finally got it done! *Throws hands up in exasperation*
The reason this took so long was I knew where this chapter was going to go, but I didn't know where to start! Then when the words started flowing I didn't know where to end. I had to move some of what I've written onto another word document so the chapter could end right. I already know where that chapter's going and got like three paragraphs typed. So hopefully- notice I said hopefully- The next chapter will not take a fucking month to update.
No guarantees. School seems intent on sucking out all the motivation out of me. After writing two creative assignments and re-writing an essay, all while having to read a book you're not particularly interested in and having to deal with six other courses is not fun and just leaves me wanting to sleep or kill my brain cells and time on Tumblr.
Okay! Next chapter is going to have the POV of the two moon beams. I've already come up with the name for the one with Legolas. Its name is Sil. Yes the moon beams have personalities. It's so much fun to write them~
So until next time! I thank you for your patience and would really like it if you reviewed!
