Chapter 4 : A musical announcement

Fionna was overwhelmed with excitement as the start of the new school year drew closer. She had spent a good week gathering everything she thought she might need for her second year. Her mom and Cake had both ganged up on the blonde to go clothes shopping so she would look her absolute best their second year.

The lot of them, Iggy, Micro, Lsp, cake who decided to spend the remainder of the summer at Fionna's, Marshall Lee and of course Fionna, had all decided packing into Iggy's van would be a much better travel choice then the spacious train. At the last week of summer the gang kissed parents, mainly Fionna's mother Jenny, goodbye and drove off for the academy.

The first four hours were spent catching up on sleep since Iggy insisted they had to leave at 5:39 sharp. When questioned for the decision, Iggy's only response was a quick shut up.

Fionna assumed he wanted to get there early for the roommate assignments, so he and Marshall could once more share a room.

However when the fifth hour of the road trip vanished, it was becoming clear to everyone what the real agenda was.

"A concert!?" Lsp's shrill voice echoed off the walls of the ever shrinking van, the excitement in his voice was quite prominent. Chatter rose through the van as the gang began giving opinions on this adventure.

"Hell yeah! I figured one last jam out before school started and we had to be instructed about our music." Iggy offered Marshall a fist bump. Marshall gave a smirk and returned the gesture.

"This is killer man. Who knew such brains lay in that head or yours."

Fionna laughed taking up her guitar. "Let's make it happen then." She began to strum a few cords whilst the others began to join in. Lsp turned the side of the van into a drum set. Cake took a fiddle from its case and started playing along. A song was slowly taking form.

Two days were spent at the amateur concert, Two days of absolute awesome, some of the music played had blown Fionna's mind; while other performance's had fallen short. The time they did not spend watching others be cheered or jeered, the group found themselves on make-shift stages listening to fifty to sixty begging fans cheering for an encore.

Finally the group was heading to the school, Fionna's throat was sore but she knew it was worth it. By the time they had arrived at the academy more of the students, mainly freshman, had started to group around the campus. Fionna and Cake bid their group a fond farewell before trotting off to find out their rooming situation.

The councilor in charge of dorm assignments was devastatingly busy. There was a long line wrapping around a corridor of students waiting for their room information. Fionna looked at Cake questioningly, they had a silent debate before the two nodded in agreement and walked off to find the others, promising to return later when the line was shorter.

They wondered around the school, reminiscing about all the places they had shared the previous year. The old hut where their epic party had been held still stood abandoned on the out skirts of campus. The haunted hall way had been transformed into a conjoined lounge where students would be allowed to study. At last the best friends made their way to the music hall and into Simon's room. It was the only room that was connected to the stage, making it the biggest room with the largest classes.

"Uncle Simon?" Fionna knocked on the office door. The sound of someone tripping, and things being knocked over echoed out to cake and Fionna before the glasses clad professor stumbled through the door.

"Ah Fionna, Cake what a pleasant surprise. Did you guys just get in?" Simon crossed his arms; a vibrant smile crossed his face. Fionna returned the smile.

"Yeah the band wanted to play one more time before the school year started. How was your summer uncle Simon?"

The conversation moved through the topic of summer vacation and to the gigs the misfits had played. Simon was engulfed by the various songs the band has created over the summer. He had spent a full ten minutes letting his niece show him the music sheets she had written.

"You know... Fionna the music department has this project coming up we do every other year. And i think maybe the other professors would be interested in adding for your help."

Fionna raised an eye brow. A chance to help the music department was definitely something to look into. "What kind of project?"

Simon smiled, pushing his glasses up the bridge of his nose. "A musical." Fionna's face lit up. She loved musicals. Cake it seemed shared her passion, and was more than ecstatic to learn of this new addition to the school year.

"There wouldn't by any chance be a role in the musical that may suit us, would there?" Fionna and Cake clasped their hands together and gave the biggest grin the two could muster. Simon let out a laugh, patting both girls on the head as he held up a copy of the musicals script. Across the cover Fionna read: 'Daughter of the Moon'. She reached out for the script excitedly, but Simon kept it just out of her reach.

"Now look Fionna, this is hush hush business. If word gets out that you two know about this the whole thing could be canceled. Alright, so give me your word you'll not tell anyone till school starts." He looked at Fionna hard. "Even the band."

The two agreed. Cake snatched the script up and shoved it in a backpack hanging off Fionnas shoulders. With a new sense of excitement for the upcoming school year the two girls rushed back toward the dorm councilors office determined to push their way through the line if needed.
