Chapter 4: City of Death

After packing everything they would need to travel to the city Sanji finally said his goodbyes to Zeff and the other and made their way towards the north, from what Zeff had told them the City was the only known sanctuary for Vampires, Werewolves and other people since it was protected from the slayers.

"So why we going to the city again?" Luffy asked for the 5th time in a row "Idiot, we're going because it the only place the slayer won't find us since the city doesn't allow them in" Nami said angrily, the other knew the real reason they were going but telling Luffy would only complicate things. After Luffy collapsed the other had discussed it would be better to travel as soon as possible to the city before the blood moon appeared, "Since we only have a today left we should be there by dusk" Sanji thought as they continued down the road. As they travelled on they soon enough reached the city, "Wow it Hugh" Luffy said sounding all inspired at the size of the city in front of them "I've heard it's one of the few biggest landmark in the world" Nami said as she too was surprised by the size of the city.

The city of night was a large round shaped structure with walls of stone so thick it would be impossible for any invading army to penetrate the city limits, the inside of the city stood three lined circles; the first was the lower town and market place where many people converged to buy or sell their wares, the second housed the upper class and barracks this circle was for the rich merchants and nobles of the city but also housed the army barracks to protect and serve the city as well as house the armies families. The last circle was a tall structure made of a rare stone so hard no one could destroy it, this structure was called the sanctuary for within these wall housed every vampire and werewolf who lived in the city during the blood moon.

Though the Slayers guild had no access to the city many humans who lived peacefully with the night world knew that they were in danger every year the blood moon rose so together they built the sanctuary within the city so that every year the vampires and werewolves would be in one place and keep the humans safe. During the blood moon to keep the night world sated several criminals who had the death penalty were forced into the sanctuary if they could survive the night they were set free but most of the time no criminal came out alive. This is how the city had been for the last 300 years, though the government had tried on several occasions to enter the city and take control the rulers of the city had always pushed them back with the cities defence for the city was built to coexist with the night world not to destroy it as they had done in the war.

As Luffy and the other approached the gates they noticed a few guards hassling another group of people trying to gain access to the city, "Sorry you have to pay the entrance fee or no access" one of the guards said looking smug at the young family "We don't have any money, we only came because we have some stuff the sell in the market" said one of the men "To bad no money, no access" one of the guards kicked the man down into the mud and laughed "You can't do that, besides there's no entry fee into the city your just trying to make some money out of decent folk" said one of the boys as he stood up to the guard "Stay out of this you stupid brat, an issue was made to charge entry into the city and we're following orders" the other guard said as he pushed the boy into the mud alongside the other man.

"Their lying, this is obvious someone trying to gain control of the city" Robin said as they continued to watch the guard hassle the group by taking their valuables for payment "We can't draw attention to ourselves, we'll pay the entry fee and make our way to the sanctuary" Nami said as she drew out her purse to pay the guards. As the guard laughed at the group they turned their attention to Luffy and the other, as Nami paid the entry fee they could see the look of hate on their face it seemed not everyone in the city welcomed vampires, werewolves or witches as they thought. As they moved on through the city Luffy could smell many different foods and people; Zoro, Sanji and Ussop could as well as they passed into the second circle. But Zoro and Sanji we're keeping their guard up, if there we're people in the city that hated the night world there we're properly people waiting to attack them while they we're moving towards the sanctuary.

"Welcome to the sanctuary, my name is Dolton I am the head chief of the army and will be guarding the city during the blood moon, are all of you staying here" Dolton asked "No I'm staying near the inn till my friends are back to normal" Nami said as she explained everyone's reasons for being in city. Luffy wasn't paying much attention as he noticed a strange smell coming from behind him, he turned to notice a werewolf approaching, he was tall and wore a long black and red coat and a large sword on his back his face was hidden by his hat but Luffy could tell this man was strong, stronger than him and Zoro which probably meant he was a lot older than them by several 100 years. Zoro had noticed the man as well and was shivering for he had met that man before and was itching for a rematch with him.

"Hawkeye, I thought you'd be outside with your kind for this event then in here" Dolton said as the man walked passed him, "I did consider it but I don't really feel like hunting with the other weakling this year, that is all" Hawkeye moved on not even looking at the others or at Dolton. "What's one of the Blood Lords doing here" Sanji said as he shook of the feeling of being in that man's presence "Hawkeye comes and goes from the city sometimes, though this is the first time I've seen him here usually after you guys have experience the blood moon a couple of time you start to gain awareness of your surrounding and can keep yourselves from killing to many of your kind or ours" Dolton said as he signalled the gate to open.

"Since all of you are here for your first blood moon I'll take you all to the arena where you can spend the rest of the day relaxing, by tonight we'll have you moved to the kill zone" Dolton said as the gates fully opened "Wait kill zone?" Sanji said looking confused "Ya that where you can freely transform without going berserk on the city it also where you can freely hunt" as Dolton moved towards the sanctuary the guys said farewell to Nami as she went off to the inn for the next few days.

The inside of the sanctuary was Hugh as they came out the tunnels that lead to the arena, there they saw a variety of different people either talking or fighting each other. A lot of them were watching fights and making bets on who would win. The older generation were watching from the side-lines "There a lot of them ha" Luffy said scratching his head "Ya and a lot of strong ones too we better keep out of trouble that include you Luffy" Zoro said as he eyed Luffy warning him not to pick a fight "You shouldn't be so serious, not everyone is all butched up to fight" Sanji said as he finished his cigarette "You got a problem with following orders you dog" Zoro growled at Sanji "No I just don't take orders from flee bags" Sanji growled back. As the tension escalated between both werewolves it caught the attention of several other werewolves and vampires as they looked to see the new comers "Hey guys were attracting to much attention" Ussop said as he tried hiding behind Robin.

"Cram it Ussop, this bastards getting what coming to him" Zoro said as he took off his shirt, "Big word from mongrel" Sanji said as he too took his shirt off, Zoro jumped Sanji and slammed him into the earth and began punching him. Sanji managed to turn the tables and knock Zoro off and transform into his wolf form and bite into his shoulder. Their fight got many of the others cheering them on as Zoro too transformed and began biting Sanji and trying to rip him apart. Their fight lasted for an hour as both bled badly from each other's wounds, "Come on guys knock it off, Luffy you have to do something" Ussop asked Luffy but he was staying out of it since it was their fight and not his. Zoro and Sanji growled at each other as the prepared to strike again but as they charged towards each other a large black wolf suddenly appeared between them and knocked Zoro back.

Sanji stopped as the black wolf eyed Zoro and looked ready to kill him as Zoro bared his teeth in anger "Sanji, you alright" Robin asked as Sanji transformed back "Ya that bastard didn't hold back" as Sanji held the wound on his neck," I'll get some bandages" as Ussop ran off to find some medicine and bandages Luffy watched as Zoro was continuously beaten by the bigger wolf "Wonder why Hawkeyes getting involved" said a voice behind Luffy, the man behind luffy was a tall Vampire who looked to be at least 5 years old then Luffy he wore a simple shirt and trousers and wore a white hat with black spots. Luffy looked back at the man as he smiled at him showing him a bit of respect between them, as Luffy looked back Zoro was struggling to get up again and the black wolf had turned back into Hawkeye "You haven't changed much pup your still not strong enough to just fight as you like" Hawkeye said as Zoro turned back.

"You had no right to stop me" Zoro said as he struggled to stand up from his wounds, "Hm you think you can choose who you fight, when you can keep up with the best only then can you chose who you can fight" as Hawkeye walked away from Zoro a chuckle could be heard "Those are big words for someone who couldn't fit in with a pack and continues to wander on his own maybe your right but then again I'm not one to judge" said a man wearing a pink feathered coat and was surrounded by other werewolves "What you doing here Doflamingo?" Hawkeye said as he eyed the other Blood Lord "Same as you, got bored and thought I'd hang here till the blood moons over; can't really be bothered to hunt outside where there's no good sport to play with" Doflamingo said while still chuckling. Hawkeye didn't reply back and moved on to find some peace.

As the other moved away Ussop began checking both Sanji and Zoro's wounds luckily both were healing quickly, "What gotten into you two" Ussop said looking angry at both men "Ussop, with the blood moon coming everyone's emotions are out of whack so him antagonising me wasn't really smart" Zoro said as Ussop applied the last bandage around his arm. Robin and Luffy watched as both werewolves argued again over who was a better fighter "You felt it didn't you" Robin said as she loosened her grip on her hands from watching Zoro and Sanji fight. "Ya, you too" Luffy said as he noticed Robin was still shaken "That was an interesting fight, even with us not jumping in it would have been fun to see a vampire fight a werewolf" said the man from earlier "Who're you" Luffy asked as the man approached them "Sorry, the names Law" said the man as he bowed before Luffy.

"I guess every Vampire felt like fighting today" Law said as he saw the others eyeing them "But when we fight it to the death and that not a pretty sight" Law laughed a bit at how Vampires and Werewolves fought "What you want" Robin asked looking annoyed at Law "Nothing I thought I come over and talk to you since you seem to be the only group not here out of boredom" Law said as he readjusted his hat "Your first time to" Luffy asked "Ya, might be interesting to see what happens, if a few of the older generation are here we might hear some interesting tales about us after we change" Law said as he looked at the older generation in the far corner "Well see you around, hope you don't die" Law moved off to join another group of vampires that seemed to know him.

As the day got darker and darker Luffy began to feel something in his chest, at first he thought it was because he was hungry but as the day moved on it only got more intense like his heart was trying to tell him something bad was coming, "Hey Luffy you alright" Ussop asked as he notice Luffy clutching his chest and looking paler "Ya I'm fine Ussop" Luffy replied back but somewhere in Luffys mind he knew something was wrong. "What will you do Robin most of us will be in the kill zone" Sanji asked Robin, it seemed that half breeds didn't go into the kill zone they were put into a separate area so that they could avoid the more dangerous changes but still be able to keep control of themselves without killing anyone.

"Don't worry about me, Dolton told me most half breeds can be chained to avoid harming the guards, so I'll be fine, I'm more worried about you guys" Robin said as most of the others started moving towards the tunnel to the kill zone, "Hey don't worry we can handle ourselves" Zoro said as he placed his swords in the safe to avoid them being taken by anyone. "Ya we're mighty warriors were not afraid of anything" Ussop said "Then why you shaking" Sanji said as he noticed Ussop legs shaking "They'll stop eventually" Ussop said trying to sound convincing, "Ok, I'll see you all tomorrow" Robin moved off with the other half breeds and the boys moved off with the rest of the people.

"Hey Luffy come on" Zoro said looking back, he saw Luffy sweating and looking up blankly into the sky, part of Zoro could feel something was wrong so he walked up to Luffy and helped him move "Zoro where we going" Luffy asked his voice sounding weak as they walked further into the tunnel. "We're going into the kill zone Luffy remember" Zoro said "Oh, will there be food" Luffy smiled as he thought about getting something good "Ya, you could say that" Zoro said as the hairs on the back of his head stood up. He could feel an aura of power coming from Luffy that keep growing till they entered a large forest area "Is this the kill zone" Zoro thought as he placed Luffy down under a tree, Zoro looked around and couldn't see Sanji or Ussop anywhere "Must have got separated" he thought as he checked around for others in the area.

As he looked up he could see the dark sky filled with stars and a round moon in the middle of the sky, as Zoro looked back at Luffy he could see he was asleep but he knew that wouldn't be for long because in a few minutes that big white moon would change colour and send every one of them into a savage rage for blood. As Zoro checked on Luffy he noticed Luffy was changing colour and his hair was becoming long then usual, "What's happening to you Luffy" Zoro said as he moved back to take one more look at the sky and noticed the change in the moon, first it was a small dot then it grew bigger and bigger and then Zoro heard it. Throughout the whole zone screams of agony were heard as many began to change against their will into their beast form completely devoid of emotion and feelings.

Zoro felt it happening as well but tried to keep the pain from releasing but his change felt more violent than his usual transformation like he was burning away his human form and becoming the true wolf inside. As he looked at Luffy with his wolf eyes he noticed Luffy was in more pain like whatever was making him change was more terrifying, "Lu…Luf…Luffy" Zoro tried reaching the boy but his transformation was forcing him more into his wild side then his human side and soon enough he lost all thought at all as his full wolf form came out but it wasn't like in his fight with Sanji something had changed that made Zoro much bigger like he was more than just a simple wolf anymore.

At the same time Luffy could feel the pain in his chest become worst as his mind was cracking from the pain it was like nothing he'd felt before though he had felt the pain a week ago from his fight with Crocodile it had passed but now as he looked up at the moon as it turned into what seemed to be a red eye, it was almost as if it was calling for all the monsters to come out and play and feast on the carnage of the night, "What's happening to me?" were the last thoughts that ran though Luffys mind as the last of his strength gave in an turned him into something that wasn't like his vampiric form. He stayed the same but was more muscular, his hair was slightly longer, he was taller but what was different about him was the mark that grew up his neck and along the side of his face which revealed sharp red eyes devoid of emotions. As the screaming was replaced by howling and growls Luffy got up from the ground and looked at the Hugh Wolf in front of him. The wolf was a large white wolf with deep wolf eyes and one green patch over one of them.

Luffy continued to watch the wolf as if waiting for it to move, but the wolf continued to watch as it began to growl at Luffy, as It prepared to strike Luffy grabbed it and flung it into the trees not even caring if it would get up he moved on into the forest following the sound of other creatures that we're near him. He passed several other vampires and werewolves but none of them came near him as if something was telling them to avoid that vampire, as he passed the other went back to attacking each other but as Luffy came up to the wall of the forest he instinctively punched the wall and created a large hole. A large sound erupted from what had happened; as it did Luffy came out of the hole and continued to walk into the city not even caring about the soldiers aiming their guns at him. "Hold it" one of the solider said as he looked at the vampire with fear but that only attracted Luffy's attention as he looked at the solider he rushed at him and bit down into his neck draining every last drop of his blood with no remorse "Damn what is that thing" as Luffy tossed the dead soldier and eyed the next one.

"Alert, one of the monsters has gotton loose of the sanctuary all folks are to go back to their homes and lock up tight till soldiers have detained the monster in question" the alert was ring about for about half an hour since Luffy had punched through the wall. Many people who heard the call had rushed home to lock up to keep their self's or their families safe, many of the soldiers were running to the second circle to stop the monster from doing any more damage the latest report showed that the monster in question had already kill 30 soldiers and had destroyed half the army barracks from attacking the soldiers, they tried to keep it from leaving the out walls of the sanctuary but had failed because they weren't dealing with their regular monster under the blood moons influence but something else entirely.

Since the city was in turmoil with their first monster breakout they didn't notice 2 stranger walking through the city the first one was a big man wearing the outfit the slayers wore he had hidden it under a cloak but if anyone looked closer they would see his uniform "Seem like we have a strong one tonight might be good to use this one to take the city let just hope this monster is fun to play with" the slayer said while grinning as he moved to find this monster. As for the other stranger his presence was very intimidating as if anyone that was around him would collapse for his very being was stronger than any person alive. "So causing trouble here, not surprising this is the first time one's appeared in over 300 years better make sure you don't destroy the entire city or the slayers will know who you are" the stranger said as a large storm swept in bring thunder and lighting that shone the man's face showing a marking on his left side of his face and him grinning as he moved on to find the source of the commotion in the city.

Who are the strangers and what do they want with Luffy, Hope you guys enjoy this chapter I'll do a bit more on Zoro's transformation in the next chapter and hopefully I'll be moving on with this part of the story.
