"Today's the day." Jt said, pacing back and forth in front of the hospital the next morning.

"What day?" Liberty asked, coming up from behind with her warm black parka on, hair straightened and holding a coffee.

"Today." He declared, stopping and turning to her.

She lifted an eyebrow amused with his eager but wierd attitude. "And to do WHAT though?"

"Ask Paige out." he breathed, facing the hospital like a scared cat again.

"HA!" she laughed out loud and he whipped around to her.

"I-I'm going to do it." he stuttered and got angry when she didn't believe him, giggling as she continued to walk into work and he chased after her.

"Liberty," he spoke as he followed her to her spot of work and not his, "I know you seem to forget, but I'm a man. I have needs. And I'm not a bad looking man!" he gasped, stopping to turn her. "Am I?"

She looked at him seriously now and then looked away. After a long wierd pause and muttered, "Your.. fine." she avoided his eyes as she added, "You've been saying you're going to ask Paige out for months. I'm trying to just help you and insist she's a bit of a heart breaker."

JT looked hurt, "No that's not it. You don't think I'm good enough for her."

"NO JT that's not what-"

"Am I just some dorky idiot to you to?"

"JT!" Liberty tried calling after him when he stormed off upset. Something bugged him deep down knowing even Liberty didn't think he was enough.

(((((*****)))))))

In the lobby, Snake was writing down the nurses who would be attending the surgeries today and Emma straightened up in delight seeing she was with Craig today and didn't have to dodge Jay today. Three whole days since ignoring him.. and it was killing her. But it was better than standing in a room with him feeling awful and awkward.

Manny shook her head confused though, wondering why she was paired with Snake and not Craig.. Craig could of asked for her and it could of been easily arranged. She saw him walking down the hall toward the locker room to change into his scrubs.

"A brain surgery, you know I love those!" she told him and followed him into the locker room, "Why won't you let me scrub in?"

"Because Manny, you.." he drifted off and scoffed, opening his locker and not knowing how to explain. He liked her, he really did, it's just the fact that he liked her so much that standing in a room trying to focus on work and trying to save someones life, was hard..

"I what?!"

"You distract me!" he finally yelled back and her mouth shut.

She blinked, realizing SHE was the reason he was getting distracted the past few days. She then got angry though, "So my dream of being a doctor is going to fall to pieces because YOU can't get it together?"

"This is why I said you and me would be a bad idea" Craig shook his head, whipping off his leather coat.

Manny grabbed his arm to make him finally look at her, "I never told you to kiss me, I'm ready for this and if you're not then..." she shook her head while she felt her heart drop, "Then we shouldn't be together."

"Manny!" he called after her, feeling his stomach turn but she stormed out.

Craig flew into the computer x-ray room. Jay was helping a patient before a cat scan and sighed, "Alright Miss Helga, just relax, and if you're uncomfortable, call out to me, I can hear you from the other room just across from this mirror." he pointed it out and gave her an assured nod.

Craig glanced at what the lady was getting a cat scan for and saw the huge tumor on the side of her waist, and it was BIG. She nodded sweetly to Jay and Jay nodded, pressing a button and her body started to move forward into the scanner as Jay and Craig walked to other room, closing the door behind them.

Jay went to the computer, eyeing her scan and the tumor.

"So, you clearly need something." muttered Jay to Craig who stood beside him as he sat by the computer, "Not every day do you need TWO doctors for a cat scan."

"Manny." Craig easily revealed.

"Saw that coming.." he muttered back, scratching the back of his head. Him and Craig weren't really 'buddies', but guess he didn't hate him either.

"She distracts me, in surgery." he tried to explain.

Jay narrowed his eyes at Craig, "Then get her out." he solved easily.

"She thinks its me betraying her." he explained.

"Then suck it the fuck up, and do it with her in there." Jay scoffed, sick of helping people with their 'love life' when he had no idea what to do about his. He went to the bar last night, and there was this girl, but she was no Emma and Jay couldn't even do it. What the hell was wrong with him!

Craig got the hint Jay wasn't into talking about this and glanced at the screen. "Jesus this woman couldn't look at herself in the mirror and see how big this thing was getting?" he asked.

"Maybe she was too afraid to look at it." shrugged Jay.

Craig snickered, "or she's got a death wish. Pure stupidity."

Little known to them, they left the speaker on, and the woman in the cat scan tried to fight back her tears as she listened to them talk to her.

Later on that same woman, Erin Helga, laid in her hospital bed as Emma told her what was going to happen with her and the surgery they were going to do with her.

"Your x rays proved that.." Emma drifted off, reading the file in her hands, "Well, you have a large size of a tumor... but we are going to go ahead with the surgery. There will be lots of blood loss, but we think it'll be okay. Not of it has entered any main organs. We'll have tons of blood bags hooked up to you just incase so you'll be safe." She smiled softly back at Helga. "If this goes well, you'll be out of here by next week."

The woman softened to Emma's words and smile, and she smiled back As Craig and Jay walked up behind from out in the hall, she got angry, "Out! I don't want you in here!" she yelled and Emma jumped, turning around to see who she was yelling at. Both guys looked at another strangely and back to Miss Helga.

"Ma'am." Craig said, "Me and Doctor Hogart here are good surg-"

"Not him, you, I don't want you as my doctor." she fumed and tried to fight back tears, "And I want her as my nurse." she pointed at Emma.

Craig's mouth fell and he didn't understand, and Emma closed her eyes for a moment, stuck with Jay for a whole surgery.. Great!

Before Craig left, he stopped when he heard the patient cry a little and mummer, "I don't have a death wish."

Jay clenched his jaw, seeing now what was happening. Craig's anger was pushed onto the patient in the computer room and the speaker must of been still on...and she heard Craig putting her down while she here for THEIR help. That was the worst thing for a Doctor to do.

Craig closed the door behind him and stormed off, angry at himself and mad at Manny too for making his mood swings fly all over the place.

((((((******)))))

Later on for the surgery, Emma wore her purple scrubs as Jay walked in with his normal black ones and black cap that looked like he still had on his backwards hat. They prepped for the surgery before it began.

Jay went to the sink and clenched his jaw. She was doing everything she could to not stand to close to him, or even just talk or say 'hello'. It hurt.

"Are you done ignoring me?" he taunted, turning towards her.

Emma's mouth fell and she turned her head to him from her sink, "Ignor-" she stopped herself, okay clearly she was avoiding him. "What we did was a mistake. That's all."

"You liked it." Jay insisted.

Emma's body went tense and she blushed but fumed, "Excuse me?!"

"You wouldn't of moaned like you did or went for round 2 if you didn't." he said and shook his head, turning her to face him when she snickered and tried to turn away from him. "Why can't we just try it?"

"What?" Emma asked in disbelief but then giggled a bit, "Oh my god, you mean date?" She looked at him in more disbelief. No! Jay Hogart didn't want a girlfriend, did he?

Jay glared at her, not seeing the humor. He cared about her, a lot..she was so dumb to not see that. This wasn't easy for him.

"You know you look at me like I'm some uncommitted heart breaking monster yet here I am, asking you to go out with me." Jay reminded her.

Emma looked away from him, he was right. And she wanted this too, but Jay had a reputation. Could she even trust him? Would he cheat? Would he hurt her? With her history record, she couldn't stand to be hurt again. She had a feeling Jay had the power to break her completely if she let him in.. she cared about him that much.

Jay looked out the window to the surgery room, seeing the patient being rolled in, "Swear to god, you're like my tumor." he mummered playfully, narrowing his eyes back at her.

Emma rolled her eyes, "charming." but she smirked a little, it was kind of true. "Can't believe Craig said those things in front of her."

Jay turned back around to her and she took notice. By the serious look on his face, she knew they weren't talking about the patient anymore. "Go on one date with me, Nelson."

He grinned widely when she rolled her eyes smiling, "Jay, it's against the rules." she opened the doors and they went into surgery.

Craig stood there and Jay sighed as he stopped beside Emma. "Mannings, she said she didn't want you in on this."

"I'm not, I'm...just going to watch." Craig insisted, never taking his eyes off the patient with a tortured look in his eyes. "I feel horrible."

Jay bit the end of his tongue, glancing at Emma who shrugged her left shoulder slowly. Watching couldn't hurt. If he stayed in the prep room, Helga wouldn't have to see him.

"Fine." Jay sighed. Craig wanted to see this woman make it and Jay was going to do his damn best.

"Okay, stand back here then" Jay put on his white surgery mask and the other nurses began to work as Helga was now under.

Meanwhile, Ellie and Manny had dinner on Ellie's famous secretary desk. JT came over and tilted his head, "None of us are in surgery?"

"Just Emma." Manny said kind of jealously.

"I'm shocked you weren't in the brain surgery earlier." admitted Jt, "Everything okaY?"

"I'm fine." Manny declared simply. It's Craig that wasn't. Ugh this wasn't fair.

"Alright ladies." Jt said, taking a deep breath and they shared a look, "I'm looking for room-mates for my creepy old granny's house. Whose in?"

"Party house!" joked Manny, kind of interested. Her place was honestly in the GHETTO. Nurses weren't paid much you know? It was the Doctors who were. Those heart breaking, soul sucking, jerk of Doctors.

Ellie shook her head, "I couldn't share a place with you. I bet you're messy. Your locker always is."

J t rolled his eyes, "That's fine, I bet you sleep in a coffin anyways and not a house."

"I'm in." Manny blurted out and nodded, "I'll be your room-mate, bills are getting way too high for that ghetto place of mine downtown."

JT grinned widely, "Woo-hoo!" his smile than fell, watching Liberty pass and go to the patient Dannys room. He clenched his jaw and looked down before sneaking a glance at her. She hadn't spoken to him all day. Was that it? They weren't friends anymore? Wasn't it her who insulted HIM?

He scoffed, wishing he didn't notice himself caring so much and he turned around to notice both Ellie and Manny giving him looks. "What?" he snapped

Manny smirked, "off in LaLa land?"

"Or should we call it Liberty land?"

"Please," snapped Jt, "She's so not my type and I'm definitely not hers. I'm an 'idiot' remember? Never taken seriously."

They looked at him like he was. Did he really not notice Liberty had a crush on him? "How isn't she your type?" taunted Manny, "She's smart, and pretty."

"Hates me, and again we aren't like that." reminded JT to then look where Liberty once was. She was pretty..least Manny was right about that, but she was so irritating sometimes and got under his skin. He never cared so much about what a girl thought about him til her- oh. Oh crap- He had a crush on Liberty. He liked Liberty! "WHAT?!" he said out loud, his eyes widening. Maybe he was an idiot!

Ellie and Manny, clueless on what he just gasped and yelled about, walked around him and left.

He groaned, throwing his head back. Maybe Liberty was his type now, since she was so out of his league and he seemed to only go after girls who were. Liberty was his friend too though, least Paige nor any other girl had ever been one of his real friends. Oh crap. This was going to eat up at him. He stood up, noticing Liberty come out of Danny's room and he went over. "Liberty!"

Liberty gasped a bit and looked over to turn around and snap, "Not right now, JT."

His mouth fell, watching her run off and his shoulders fell. Did he lose her?

((((******))))

Inside the surgery..

"Doctor, she's bleeding too much." a nurse said to Jay whose eyes focused hard on the patient and pumped her chest, to make her breath.

"Don't think I know that?!" he asked maybe too angrily.

Craig stood up a bit more and looked around in panic, this woman didn't deserve to die, this womans last thoughts couldn't be hating him for what he said out of stupidity and anger at Manny.

"Where's the damn blood!? She's losing too much!" Jay yelled.

Emma looked at the nurses who shook their heads, not knowing where that nurse with the next blood load was and so Craig took off, going to go find it himself and ran with all he could.

As he ran through the hospital basement, a nurse who walked fast was stopped by his hands, "Is this it? Is this the blood for G O.R?" he snapped at her when she was just so shocked he came running at her and grabbing. "IS IT!?" as she nodded quickly, he grabbed it and took off running back to the surgery room. And he ran with all he could.

He whipped the doors open raising the blood pack, "I got it, I go-" he stopped talking. The machines were off, and everyones masks were off.

Emma muttered quietly, glancing at the clock. "Time of death, 6:14 pm." she took a deep breath and walked off.

Craig sadly walked up next to Jay, looking at all the blood loss and the lost patient, "But.. I was getting the blood."

"We lost her." Jay informed, taking his gloves off and left Craig alone in the room. Craig's eyes watered, and he swallowed the lump in his throat as he gazed up regretfully at Helga.

[The Fray- How to save a life]
Where did I go wrong? I lost a friend

Somewhere along in the bitterness
And I would have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life
How to save a life
How to save a life...

Both Jt and Craig were the last ones to leave, both in the locker room sitting on separate benches and staring at the wall ahead of them blankly.

(((((((*******)))))))

Emma sat sadly on her apartments couch. She wore her comfy grey sweatpants and a white tank top. Manny knocked on her front door before entering, since her and Emma were best friends like that.

"Em?" she was holding coffees, and spotted Emma on her dark purple couch, cuddled in her own white knitted blanket. Emma had quite the taste. Her apartment was cozy and had nice things, but was rather small. "Heard you took a day off." Manny said sadly, she was still in her scrubs and just got off work.

Emma muted her tv, since just watching some Chick flick. She wasn't in the mood now anyways, with her love life being so horrible. She couldn't shake Jay off. She was scared she might never. The feeling she felt for him were strong, and something told her were not going away for a while.

"Heard you moved in with JT." Emma said with a small smile and grabbed the coffee happily as Manny giggled, nodding.

"I did." she admitted, and she looked around Emma's small apartment which was a 1 bedroom but seemed like a bachelor, "Ugh, maybe you should too. You have to much nice furniture for this place."

Emma laughed sadly and shrugged, "I'm not rich." she explained.

"The rent JTs asking from me if A LOT less than my apartment and I'm sure yours too. You should think about it."

Emma frowned deeply then. "I really messed up mine and Jay's thing. I even miss our daily banters."

"Me too." admitted Manny. "But hey! Who needs to date a Doctor? At least Jay doesn't get nervous when doing surgery, or having you in the room with him. Like Craig." she spat.

They then bursted into giggles and Emma groaned, "We're hopeless. God, we're like a soap tv series minus the cheezy ass lines."

"Jay's wit is too well written for a soap opera." she grinned, "I would so be the seductive nurse who sleeps with all the Doctors though."

Emma laughed, "I'd be the one who brought drama, I'm sure." they laughed more, "And Ellie probably would of taken that chance with Sean if it all were really a tv show," Emma sighed, "Instead, this is reality and no coma patient is falling madly in love with the nurse or at least admitting it. Now he's gone forever.."

Manny passed her a look, "You already feel bad about your own love life. No need to pity others and if you are? Pity mine!"

((((((**********))))))

That night, Jay sat at the bar across the street from the hospital. It was called The TIPSY bar. Ironic, right? Some called it 'tips' for short. His eyes were staring at the shot glass he just had and he nodded to the bartender, asking for another. He was such a regular that the bartender was actually even a friend, his name Spinner.

"How do you do it?" Craig asked, sitting down next to him.

"Do what?" sighed Jay, not in the mood for talking. Emma really had him wrapped around her pretty little finger. This wasn't fair, he could get any girls he wanted yet she was the face he saw now whenever another girl came up to him. He felt like he couldn't, and he wasn't even dating the girl! Emma wouldn't even give him a chance.

In highschool and college, Jay probably would of never met a girl like Emma nor would even try to talk to her. He was one of those 'bad boys' back when, only went for girls who easily put out and made fun of the ones who didn't. Back then, she probably wouldn't of given him another glance. Anyways, the point is she wasn't someone he expected himself to fall for. She was independent, beautiful, and so caring. And she was smart, Jay never dated any smart ones and she always secretly amused him with how smart she was. He thought nerds were suppose to be ugly, not hot nor fun to be around, yet Emma had him lusting after her and falling hard.

When she talked, he actually listened, and when he was down, she actually noticed and knew how to cheer him up. She made his breath stop when she came into the room and DAMN- he was so in love with her it hurt to know it'd probably never be felt back. He was just that 'smug Doctor' who banged all the other nurses right? There was nothing more to him. . nothing that Emma Nelson would want anyways.

Craig continued to speak, "How do you keep so cool when under surgery, when Emma's in the room?"

Jay cornered his eyes at Craig sitting beside him up at the bar. He KNEW about Emma? He sighed and rolled his eyes. "I don't know what you mean."

"Come on man, help me out. It's getting bad.. I want to be with Manny but I know she's hurt by this.." he drifted off desperately.

Jay rubbed his eyes and took that other shot that finally. He answered, "When she's there, it makes me feel better. When I finish and everything went well, she's like my trophy. Think of it that way." he shrugged, "That and if you saved the persons life, you might get goody points."

"A trophy..for kinda like winning and showing off my skills." Craig grinned, "You're right! Thanks man."

Jay just grumbled miserable, lifting his hand to Spinner again for another round. Craig was texting on his phone to Manny who had texted back that she was out with Emma. He knew just where she'd be.

"Gotta go man."

((******))))

Manny was a dancer, a wild thing. Her favorite club was REX and there she was when Craig entered. How could he not notice? She was the hottest girl in there, and the guys tried to surround her and Emma like prey.

[Matchbox twenty- She's so mean]
'Cause she's an uptown, get-around, anything-goes girl, girl
She's a hardcore, candy-store, gimme-some-more girl, girl

She'll make you take her to the club, but then she leaves with her friends
She likes to stay late at the party, 'cause the fun never ends

Manny and Emma had just decided to go too, squishing through the crowd and stopped in their tracks when they looked up to Craig coming over. Emma looked at Manny and smiled a little leaving the two alone.

Manny crossed her arms at Craig, hating that she couldn't figure him out. "What are you doing here?" Manny yelled over the music.

Craig smiled, "Getting my trophy." he confirmed, slipping his arms around her waist and she raised an eyebrow.

"Your what?" she snapped a bit but didn't pull away and he laughed.

"I want you on my side, for EVERY surgery." he told her.

Manny's eyes widen and they beamed with happiness, "Really!?" she shouted and he nodded and she happily jumped up, wrapping her legs around his waist and hugging him tight as he laughed and his tall frame held her petite one to his.

"I love you" he said in her ear.

Manny opened her eyes, and leaned back to move her head down and kiss him. He kissed her back deeply.

Saying yeah... you want her, but she's so mean
(You'll never let her go. Why don't you let her go?)
Yeah... you want her, but she's so mean
(You'll never let her go. Why don't you let her go?)

Meanwhile, Ellie worked at her desk at 3am and it was pretty quiet, getting dark too and all the patients asleep. Most the Doctors had left. Suddenly, she heard footsteps coming over. She heard them stop infront of her and slowly raised her head.

Sean Cameron stood there and he tried hard not to grin, "So," he said, "Let's plan this dinner you owe me."

Ellie softly smiled and nodded, her heart pounding.
