Footsteps was heard. Then came the sound of the door opening, as a code was entered to the electronic lock on the side of the door. A red haired woman entered the room, her steps were regal. She was wearing a uniform fitting for a knight. A black shirt with a red coattails jacket, both having all manner of yellow frills and decorations. The room was medium sized. It had many computer screens, three working desks, a few shelf filled with books of all kind of topics and languages. Standing on the balcony, which the room is connected to, a man of black hair and violet eyes gazes far into the distance. His calculating eyes seeing far more than just the view of the whole capital.
The red haired woman walked to his side, also setting her sight in the same direction. The Knight of Zero put her hands on the rail of the balcony, trying to imitate the man to her right. The raven haired man took a glance to his left, immediately analysed what would the Knight of Zero and the Second Empress of Britannia came for. He acknowledged her presence as he put his hand on top of hers. Only after a moment of peaceful silence, she spoke up,
"We've been together for more than a century. I still can't figure out what goes inside that head of yours, Lelouch." stated Kallen as her direct view shifted to Lelouch.
Lelouch chuckled. "Don't let it bother you too much. I'm simply that hard to read." Lelouch answered as a smile appeared on his face.
"That don't feel encouraging at all. Cherith could predict what you're up to, most of the time." grumbled Kallen.
Lelouch didn't reply. He was simply content observing Kallen's grumbling face.
George Brandt let out a sigh. He was worried, that's for sure. After all, it was approximately 490 hours ago that they have made a contact with extraterrestrial. Making the matter worse, it wasn't a friendly contact. It was hostile.
The universe was so huge, with so much unknown. George was afraid. What could be out there? Lurking in the dark, waiting for the moment to strike! A long time ago, we thought that the earth was flat, and only later brave discoverers and bold philosophers proved that wrong. George took a deep breath and banish all his fears.
Although that was not the issue that he was worried about. It had been more that 20 days. Emperor Lelouch still had not launched a counter-attack against these… offenders. There weren't any civilian casualties, but the Batarians had taken out 8 of our Corbenics. Lives were lost on that day. If we were to do nothing, it would be a repeat of that day, only that now the Batarians would bring more ships… resulting in more casualties.
"Mr. Brandt. You look pale. Is this about the Batarians?" George looked up, Alexander Duerhornt the Minister of Defence was addressing him.
George stood straight, saluting the minister. "Sir, I couldn't get it out of my mind. My brother is serving as one of the engineers overseeing the projects at Shanxi. If the aliens do show up, I'm afraid that I might never see him again. "
"Its only natural for brothers to care for each other, Mr Brandt. Rest assured, his majesty in on to something. If there is anyone in our empire who is indecisive, our emperor is far from it." said Alexander, not a doubt in what he had just spoken. His ancestor, Philips Duerhornt had once served Emperor Lelouch during the Grand Rebellion. His feat was simply remarkable, and that was more than 100 years ago. If his majesty was capable of conquering the world when he was 18 years old, imagine what he would be capable of now!
"Enough with that. I wanted to ask you something, Lelouch. The Blitz on Shanxi took place three weeks ago. A normal person would have criticised you for your inactions." Lelouch's smile didn't falter.
"And what would be an abnormal person think then?"
"Gino started the rumours that you are planning something big. Everyone is tense, but they're not frightened. They're more like… waiting for you, for something big that will happen. At least for the military, and some of the ministers of course."
"Is that so?
"You have a plan, don't you? What's my part in it?" continued Kallen, before Lelouch took of her hand and led her inside his office.
"I have few things planned out, although there are a lot of unknown factors that had greatly hindered my planning." Lelouch explained, closing the sliding door after they entered the office.
"Unknown factor?" questioned Kallen, before another familiar voice came from behind her.
"He means the nature of the Batarians. What kind of creatures are they? Are they aggressive? Subtle in their actions? What are their principles? We have yet to the nature of their species." The owner was of the voice was sitting on the couch, her right hand under her right cheek, supporting it as she leaned on the sofa.
"Cherith! When did you get here?"
"Are you angry that you couldn't notice me behind you? Or that you couldn't be alone with Lelouch?" answered the green haired beauty as she stood up and walk to the other two occupants of the room.
"Your highness! All preparations have been made! The last Einsrosen gate is finished."
Cornelia nodded, the officer excused himself out of the room. Lelouch had entrusted her to oversee the completion of the gates. 'This is a big gamble, Lelouch. Our army is spread too thin…'
"Back to the topic, we've just finished preparations for the first phase. Now we're getting to the difficult part. However, this first part will decide what we do for the second and third part." said Lelouch, elbow on the desk and hand clasp together under the chin.
"Three part? You've planned that far ahead?" asked Kallen. She wasn't that surprised. Inwardly, she smiled. Typical Lelouch.
"Yes, but the second part and third are shaky at best. After this first phase, we'll be able to completely understand what kind of nature do the Batarians have. That should solidify our plans." explained Lelouch
"Don't we have Batarians prisoners that we've managed to capture?" Cherith cut in.
"True, and we were able to deduce that these Batarians are quite arrogant, but these are trained soldiers. Their nature would not show how the rest of the Batarians would act. You also know that there are other races, as according to information we managed to salvage from the crashed frigate." answered Lelouch as he brought their attention to a screen, which was showing a Batarian
"Lelouch, haven't the Batarians try to mount any further attack?"
"It would seemed that Cornelia's decision to finish the enemy before they escaped had been correct. If not, they would have sent more of the ships to attack, knowing what happened to the ships they sent. For now, I'm pretty sure the Batarians are at full suspicion and are mobilising their fleets. Not to mention one of the recon ship that we sent had tried to contact them."
"For now, gather at the debriefing room#2. I've just summoned the knights of Rounds and generals to the room. You two go ahead first. I've got some things to settle first here" said Lelouch, as he pressed another button. This time, it was the engineering corps.
Debriefing Room.
"What! What are you saying Lelouch?"
"I meant exactly what I said. For this operation we'll be laying siege to all 29 of their system that are compatible with the Einsrosen Gate. The operation will be in four phase. After the three phase i've just explained, we'll proceed with the fourth phase. This phase would be the most critical one, but it will guarantee our hold on their system."
"Our hold? That's exactly what I find difficult. How do we expect to defend 29 systems simultaneously?" A smile appeared on Lelouch's face.
"By exploiting their primary weakness, of course."
Britannian Flagship Wings of Justice.
Lelouch took his seat, many screens was shown in front of him. The screen showed status of each division.
"We will begin Phase 1. Is everything prepared?"
"Division 1, at your command." reported Anya Weinberg.
"Division 2, our stealth team are in position" reported Cornelia li Britannia, the commander of the second division
"Division 4, ready for battle" reported the commander, just after division 3 reported.
The division were all ready, all the way to the last division, "Division 29, waiting for your command, your majesty."
"Then commence the first phase!"
Britannian Command Ship, Caerleon-35
Nathan Polean was the commander of the 23th Division. He had been honored when his majesty had chosen him. He swore to do his best. Mentally reviewing all four phases, Nathan steeled himself for the battle.
"Stealth Team, proceed to the gate." commanded Nathan. As the command were given, 10 Percivals, each looking notorious on their own proceeded into the gate.
Percivals were the latest generation of the Knightmare Suit, or KMS for short. In the year 2147, it was Lloyd Asplund that had first came up with the idea of making a more compact version of the Knightmare Frame. Together with Rakshata, they had first inspired to build a miniature knightmare frame. There were many issues to the frame that they had to deal with.
A Knightmare Suit is approximately 1.8 metres tall, slightly taller than a normal person. A Knightmare frame on the other hand, is 4.5 metres tall. The decrease in size of more than half would meant there would be limited space for energy filler, weaponry and equipments. To fit in all the functions that Knightmare Frames have in a Knightmare Suit would be an engineering feat.
Generally, Knightmare Frames are better. It utilises more powerful weaponry and have a higher top speed. It also have stronger shields and tougher body. However, Knightmare Suits are far more agile and accelerate faster. It is more versatile, as they are many things Knightmare Suits can do.
Garvan Titus prepared himself before he looked around, seeing his team was also ready. He raised his right hand in the air, and quickly put it down.
Seeing the signal, the team ran toward the gate and jumped into it. As soon as they entered the gate, the space around them warped, pink aurora surrounding them. Withstanding the low pressure of their surrounding, they continued propelling themselves forward as if they were diving through the air. Minutes passed by, they finally saw the exit. Bright brilliant light shone out of the rupture. They readied themselves, activating their wing system, as to soften their landing.
They passed though the rupture and quickly propelled themselves upwards. All of them landed with a thud. Garvan looked around, then at his HUD screen. They all made it through.
"Break formation!" With that each two of them proceeded to their respective coordinates. They were to stealthily destroy strategic enemy locations, in pairs. Garvan's energy wings lifted him and he flew off towards one of the few FTL radar towers. He looked at the his HUD, his partner was right behind him.
As the sight of a huge city came into view, Garvan opened his HUD command, ordering his partner to go ground. They descended and deactivated their energy wings. Stealthily and swiftly, they advanced to the city walls.
