I stand at the large window with shaky breathes. My petrified eyes watch the mobs of enchanted men closing in around the building as my mind wonders to all possibilities of how I could face death. I faintly hear Rick calling out to me to follow the group to escape but I couldn't get my legs to move. With my eyes still glued to the horrific scene in front of me, Rick grabs me by the arm and hurls my stiff body over his shoulder like I'm nothing more than a feather.
"We don't have time for this Samantha!" He growls as he runs. "We need to get out of here!"
My vision is blocked by my swaying curls until I am hoisted over and thrown into the leather seat of a convertible. The car soars through the town as Rick tries to maneuver through the crowds. I could feel the sweat and body heat of several men as they try to rip us from the car in any way they could. I couldn't snap out of my shock until I felt two strong arms grip both my arms and hurl me out of the moving car. I scream as my body hits the pavement along with Mr. Daniels at my side. Instinctively he pulls me up and shoves me behind him, finding us cornered in the middle of the flea market. He reaches for his guns and starts shooting at anyone who came near. My fingers clasp at his shirt with a deathly grip as my ears ring from every shot that was pulled. I bury my face into his back for I was too frightened to see what could happen next. Once Mr. Daniel ran out of bullets, I peer over his shoulder to see the mob now simply watching us as Imhotep saunters through the crowd with Beni at his side and the Book of the Dead in his hands.
"Stay behind me, Sam." Mr. Daniels whispers over his shoulder.
Then it hits me like a bolt of electricity surging through my core. All it will take is four little words. "No," I answer with a shaky breath. I pull myself away from him and step forward. "I know what to do." At least I hoped. I take a couple of deep breathes before I call out with a roar. "Kadishmal, Kadishmal..." I watch Imhotep's smirk fall as he stops dead in his tracks. It only encourages me to go on. "Para.." Then I was interrupted by a sharp pain in my right shoulder, causing me to violently jerk back and hit the damp stone floor.
"Sam!" Mr. Daniels shouts as he rushes to my side.
I look down at my shoulder to see that Imhotep had thrown a dagger and struck me before I could finish. My cries thunder through the town as I try to keep my arm still from the excruciating pain. I hear Imhotep and Beni's footsteps come closer as Mr. Daniel's throws his arms over me protectively. At that same moment with one quick flick of a wrist, Imhotep sends Mr. Daniels flying through the air. His back hits the stone wall and lands on the ground with the wind knocked right out of him. Imhotep then roughly grabs me by the throat and lifts me off my feet. I no longer cared about the dagger that sticks out of my shoulder as I punch and kick to get free. I claw at his decaying hand desperately trying to get air.
"I shall kill you for that." He hisses through a distorted voice.
Fear pulses through me but it wasn't caused by his voice, it was the ancient language. I understood every word as if it was second nature. How could this be possible? He could see the terror in my expression as he smiles softly.
"Don't worry. I will make sure that it's not too painful." He said.
His grip tightens, causing my vision to blur and my head to feel like a soda cap. After a few seconds, his grip weakens and I feel my body being lowered to the ground. His hand still clasps my throat but his grip is loose enough now for me to breath. I cough and gasp against his strong hand, unable to drop our gaze. His head tilts as he scans my features with surprise.
He then asks me quietly for only me to hear. "Eset?"
Before I could answer him, Mr. Daniels rises from the floor and starts to charge but in his attempt, the mob of slaves restrain him.
"You let her go, you son of a bitch!" He shouts.
Imhotep smirks at his bravery before turning to Beni, still holding me by the throat. "Restrain the girl and cover her pretty mouth." He orders, his tongue still speaking the ancient words. "I will not be needing the other one. She will do perfectly."
Four men grab my kicking legs and arms as Beni muffles my cries with a ripped piece of his shirt, tied tightly around my mouth. He then casually yanks the blade from my body, causing me to yelp in pain against the wet salty cloth. I instantly feel my warm blood spill down my torso that turns my once white blouse a crimson red. I then watch Imhotep stroll up to Mr. Daniel's who eyes him from head to toe.
"Before we start our journey, Eset," he said. "I must finish what I started. Once I am complete, we will go resurrect My Love. Then make our way to your temple."
Tears fill my eyes as I watch Mr. Daniels be slowly lifted away from existence, his body shriveling like a dried fruit. His screams and cries make more tears fall, knowing that I failed him too. I hang my head in defeat with my legs giving out under me. If it wasn't for the slaves holding me up, I could have hit the floor to weep.
"Now Your Grace," Imhotep continues with his voice now smooth like silk. "We must flee."
"What about the rest of them?" Beni asked. "They will come looking for her. We must kill them."
"I suppose that is true." He sighs. "Come. We will watch what becomes of them."
I force myself forward as I'm pushed down the road. I stare down at my boots as I walk, silently praying to get out of this somehow. The pain is unbearable as my shoulder throbs, causing me to cry even more. I try to move my stiff jaw underneath the tight cloth that still wraps around my mouth. It feels like we been walking for hours until we reach a slight turn in the road with my group cornered on the side of a tall building. My heart quickens, seeing Rick and Ardeth trying to keep the crowd away with blades and fire. The chaos stops once Imhotep approaches and all eyes fall upon me and the smirking demon.
"Samantha!" Evelyn cries, trying to break out of her brother's arms. He held her in place knowing it was a risk he was not going to take.
"You have all failed." He chuckles with Beni translating for those who cannot understand. "Now you will die."
"No!" Evelyn cries, finally pushing herself away from her brother's embrace. "It was me that you wanted! Take me and let them go!"
As Evelyn still tries to persuade Imhotep, I push back the pain and my eyes scan for the familiar sewage cap. Once I see it in view, I turn my gaze upon Rick hoping that he will look at me. When his eyes finally fall upon me, I jerk my head towards the sewage cap. He follows my notion quickly and gives me a slight nod in approval. All we needed was another distraction. I slowly swift my head side to side to watch the two men that held my arms. To my advantage, they too watch Evelyn as she begs. Imhotep's patience and amusement started to weigh thin which meant that I had no more time to lose. I have to act fast. With all my might and still ignoring the pain, I yank my right elbow out and gut the first man in the stomach before swinging my body to punch the other in the mouth. All the while Rick takes a shot at Imhotep. The bullet to his head causes him to fall to the ground, giving me enough time to grab the book before it hit the ground. Evelyn and I run after the rest of the group to the sewage cap with jolting speed.
Go!" Dr. Bey orders as everyone jumps in before Rick and I. "I will hold them off."
"No!" Rick protests as I claw at my mouth restraint. "They will kill you!"
"There is no time." He bares his blade with confident eyes. "Go!"
I shake my head knowing I could have a second chance to make this right if I could only get this fabric off my mouth. I still fondle with it, trying to loosen it. Rick doesn't waste any time and snatches the book from my fingers. He throws the book down into Jonathan's outstretched hands then pushes me in. I fall inside the dark hole with Ardeth breaking my fall. He catches me, one arm around my waist and the other gripping my good arm. I pull away as Rick closes the cap, muffling the roaring sounds of war from above. Ardeth helps me loosen my restraint with quick fingers. I snatch the fabric away from me with anger.
"Open that back up! We can't just leave him! I know what to do." I shout, putting pressure on my wound. "I can end this!"
"I don't know if you were paying attention up there but we all came really close to being killed." Rick yelled, towering over me. "There is no way I'm letting you back up there."
"He made his choice." Ardeth soothes, gently grabbing my hand to follow him. "Now we must run."
I hesitate at first, gazing up at the closed cap then back at my wounded shoulder. I hate to admit that they are right. I nearly got away from having my throat ripped out. I push my legs forward with a grunt, running through the dark tunnels. My lungs burn and my joints ache with every push. Once the voices and violence was no longer to be heard, we slowed to a quick pace.
"What the hell happened up there?" Rick demands.
"Samantha," Evelyn pants. "Why didnt he kill you?"
I try to push my exhaustion aside. "He was going to but then he looked at me like he knew me. He thought I was someone else. Someone called..." I take a deep breath trying not to pass out. "Eset."
"Eset?" She asks, pondering the word. "Eset, as in Isis?"
"I dont know." I respond. "All he said was that once he was complete, we can go resurrect his love then he was going to take me to my temple."
We then round the corner and run into a dead end. Rick finds a ladder up to the streets and climbs cautiously. "Hold that thought."
As silently as he could, Rick pushes the sewage cap aside and pops his head out to search the quiet streets. He then motions for us all to follow. I try to pull myself up the ladder but I had no strength left within me. I almost collapse to the floor completely exhausted until Ardeth catches me. He pushes me up, holding me by my waist as Rick grabs my good arm to hoist me up. He hurls me up and leans me against him until I feel Ardeth's arms lift me up, one arm under my legs and the other around my shoulders. From what I could make out in the pitch black, tall buildings surround us that all seem to be abandoned. An open door stands a few feet away. Rick quickly scans the apartment with guns aimed. He motions us to come inside before closing and locking the door with the two heavy slide locks. No windows accompany the large living area which favors to my liking. Rick then finds a lantern on top of the end table which he lights to give the room a faint glow. Ardeth gently places me on the sofa and quickly examines my wound while Evelyn and Jonathan hover over. He starts to apply pressure to my shoulder which causes me to growl through gritted teeth. Rick stands by the door in order to listen for any intruders. I then close my eyes, still trying to fight the unbearable exhaustion.
"We need to get out of here and flee the city. We have no other choice." Rick demands.
"She's losing a lot of blood." Evelyn states. "She's starting to lose consciousness. I don't know if she can make it."
"There is a tribe nearby that can help her." Ardeth suggests. "My men are just outside the city-one of them knows the way. I can carry her until we reach them."
"I'll help as well." I could hear Jonathan's faint voice.
Everyone's voices then start to fade and all is replaced is my ragged breathing. I feel a brush of a comforting hand upon my cheek bringing warmth to my cold damp skin.
"Hold on Samantha." Evelyn soothed. "Just hold on for a little bit longer."
