Chapter Four - The Black Sheep of the Family
13:43 p.m.
Tobey and Sue finally arrived back home after their long bus ride. They got off the bus and ran back to the park, hoping that their bikes would still be there... but they weren't. Of course, they weren't! What had they expected? They had quite nice bikes, worth a bit of money and no thief would just leave them in the park when they could make money from them! Sue mentally kicked herself hard, as she knew that this was kind of her fault. If she hadn't been so desperate to get to the city hall earlier, then they could have quickly chained them up somewhere and they'd have still been here. Sue fought back tears, looking at Tobey awkwardly and mumbling the words, "I'm so sorry, Tobes. It's all my fault. If only I'd-"
"It's all right, Sue," he said gently, wrapping his arm around her shoulders. "I should have said something about it earlier, but I didn't... it's as much my fault as yours."
Sue hugged Tobey hard then, tears dribbling down her cheeks. He felt so warm and strong in his arms. He hugged her back and kissed the top of her head gently, snuggling into her silky soft hair, loving the smell of her mango shampoo and her deodorant. They stood like that for a while, comforted by the simple feelings of love and tenderness that all couples should feel. After a while, they realized that they really needed to get going and head on over to Drumm Street to see Mr Von Yang, so they released each other and started walking there. Tobey took Sue's hand and she clasped it tightly as they walked the ten-minute walk to Mr Von Yang's house.
"Sue, please promise me that you're no longer scared of his house," Tobey gently teased as they got nearer and Sue swatted at him playfully.
"Tobey, I stopped being scared of his house two years ago! To tell you the truth, I don't know why I was so scared of it before! It's just a strange-looking house with a sad history that's owned by a very nice man! It's nothing more and nothing less," she said passionately and Tobey smirked at her gently. Two minutes later, they arrived and went to ring the doorbell, hoping that he was there. Luckily for them, he was and he smiled at the sight of them.
"Ah, it's Chinatown's golden couple! Come on in and have a drink! Is lemonade okay with you two?" he asked and the two of them nodded gratefully, faces pink from being called the 'golden couple', whatever that meant. They went into his living room and sat down on the couch, waiting for him to come in, which he did a couple of minutes later. He handed each of them a glass of sweet lemonade and sat down across from them, saying, "You know, you really remind me of another young couple I met briefly a long time ago."
"Really?" said Tobey, intrigued.
"Yes! I met them back in the sixties. 1966, to be exact. I was a few years older than you are now whilst they were exactly your age. I never got their names but they seemed like such a happy couple, and a good case of opposites attract. The girl was very bubbly, goofy and didn't look too studious whilst the boy was very serious, stern and incredibly studious. They looked so strange, but they were a very good-looking pair... oh, sorry! I should really stop reminiscing about my youth, especially when you wanted something! Okay, what did you want?"
Sue smiled and said, "It's all right, Mr Von Yang! We don't mind you reminiscing! Um, what we wanted was... um, we just wanted to know... did you ever know a girl called Lucy Song?"
Mr Von Yan started and said, "That's a name I haven't heard in a long time! Yes, I did know her! Not well, of course, but I did see her now and then. She was Richard Song's oldest daughter and the sister in law of Zachary Xuan. Her younger sister, Janine Song Xuan, is Eunice Xuan's mother. She's also the aunt of Vincent and Rachel Song Gao, who I heard is one of your friends, Sue."
"Yes, she is!" Sue said, shocked out of her mind. She couldn't believe what she was hearing, and she kicked herself for not realizing this earlier! She really should have done, as she had been friends with Rachel since kindergarten and she often spoke about an aunt she'd never met! She was also incredibly surprised to find out that Tobey was her cousin... and Eunice's! That could mean-
"Her brother Dominic Song is Rachel's father. The Song and Xuan families are the two richest families in Chinatown... and two of the snootiest! They often look down their noses at everyone and use their wealth to show off, but Lucy and her niece Rachel are the black sheep of the family. She didn't care about money at all, and when she used her money she used it for good things like helping people and giving presents to the ones she loved! She was a really nice young lady, and she sometimes came round here to chat, often with her boyfriend in tow. He was lovely too, a real gentleman and incredibly attractive. He often wore these Hawaiian shirts that could really hurt your eyes as they were so garish, but she didn't mind. They loved each other to bits and he was heartbroken when she... you know," he said sadly and Sue nodded. She knew what he meant. Though Nana may not have told them that Lucy was banished, her disappearance would have been noticed and people would always wonder what had happened to her. She cursed Kong Li for taking such a nice girl away from all the people she loved, people who had loved her and cared for her. It wasn't fair! Whilst Sue was ranting internally over the injustice of it all, Tobey just sat there stunned into silence. He couldn't believe that he'd known his long-lost cousins this whole time! He was glad to find out that his mother had been a nice person, and he only wished that he could have met her! He didn't really care about the money stuff, he just wanted to know about his mother. He smiled and sipped his lemonade, which tasted absolutely delicious and took Sue's hand again, stroking it gently. He knew where to go after this, and he decided that he wanted everyone to know about this!
"That's all I can tell you on the subject of Lucy Song. Why did you want to know about her?" asked Mr Von Yang and Tobey came out of his trance. Sue coughed and drank her lemonade, thinking about what to say when Tobey put down his glass loudly and they turned to him in surprise.
"We wanted to ask about her, Mr Von Yang, because she's my mother," Tobey said and Mr Von Yang gasped whilst Sue glared at Tobey in annoyance. Why did he have to go and do that for? Now everyone would know and they'd get into a lot of trouble with Nana for looking for his mother behind her back. Oblivious to her anger, Tobey continued to speak. "We know this because it says so on my original birth certificate... we don't have it here as we're not allowed to take it away from the orphanage. We thought that you might know her as you've lived here your whole life and you might know something. Well, you did and we're very grateful to you for telling us everything you know! I think that we need to go home now, so we'll see you at the festival later. Ready, Sue?" he asked and Sue nodded, still annoyed at Tobey's carelessness. She gulped down the rest of her drink and got up to leave. Before they left, Tobey turned around and spoke again.
"And oh yeah, you won't tell anyone about this, will you?" he asked and Mr Von Yang, who had been sitting there with his mouth open. started and promised that he wouldn't. He then smiled and gathered up their glasses before following them to the door. Tobey and Sue went outside and Mr Von Yang just said, "See you two later then! Be safe!"
Tobey and Sue waved as Mr Von Yang went back inside and started to walk down the street, watching out for Sid and Kong Li as they walked. They were excited at what they had heard, and Tobey just exclaimed, "God, isn't that incredible, Sue? I can't believe that I'm Rachel and Eunice's cousin! Mad, isn't it? Sue, what's wrong? You look very-"
Sue turned to him and said, "Tobey, why did you tell Mr Von Yang? I thought that we were keeping this a secret! Now everyone will know and Nana will punish us and-"
"Sue, I really don't care about everyone knowing or Nana punishing us! If she didn't want me going behind her back and spreading it all over Chinatown, then she should've told me herself! Now come on!"
Sue looked at Tobey in confusion and just asked, "Are we really going home then?"
"Of course not! I want to go and talk to Rachel and Eunice, as they'll be able to give me more information! Come on! Didn't you say a few days ago that Rachel invited you to something at Eunice's place today? It's as good a time as any, so let's go now before it gets too late!"
Sue just sighed and followed him as he ran in the direction of the Xuan apartment, just hoping that they wouldn't run into Sid or Kong Li on the way... and that Eunice wouldn't kick them out when they arrived.
AN-Rachel and her family are OCs. Hope you enjoyed and chapter five will be up soon!
