Before the gas canister spewed smoke everywhere, I was barely able to identify three hostiles outside the burger joint. They were all armed with what appeared to be assault rifles probably AKs, judging by the two-round burst function that the attackers seemed to be using, they were probably AN-94s. Whatever, the case I had to act quickly, picking Kanon up I leaped behind the counter and returned fire. "GET DOWN!" I yelled to the civilians, aiming at the muzzle flashes. It was a big risk, I could have fatally wounded one of the attackers by firing blind, but I didn't have many options. I finally knelled down behind the counter, setting Kanon down while doing so. Reloading my handgun, I just barely noticed the expression on Kanon's face. "Shuya... I wasn't expecting that kind of boldness from you... I might have to reevaluate your status." she said with reddened cheeks. I told her to shut up and stay down, though unfortunately, I couldn't deny that her face was fucking adorable. Aside from her face giving me confidence, she wouldn't be too useful considering her poor close-range capabilities and refusal to carry an efficient side-arm.
Keeping my handgun ready, it seemed as if they stopped shooting. They were trying to draw me out by remaining silent, probably thinking I would do something stupid under all the pressure. These weren't terrorists, they were mercenaries, combat-seasoned and willing to take lives for the money. If I didn't make my move quickly, they would probably start shooting the civilians. "Kanon, take my gun and lead the civis out through the back." I stated calmly. The expression on Kanon's face was still devoid of emotion, but I could tell she was upset "You're going to do THAT... aren't you?" she replied, taking my handgun. Without looking back, I leaped over the counter and lunged at the attackers. Naturally, I was peppered with bullets, sustaining enough damage to kill a whale.
But that was my plan.
