I'm very sorry for not finishing this story. My problem is that I get these great ideas in my head for long stories, but I don't really commit to taking the time to write them. Life keeps moving forward. I finished college now, and need to start thinking about my life and career, and would rather spend my free time doing other things besides writing fanfics.
Here I will summarize what happens in the rest of the story, giving some long overdue closure.
As you may have already guessed, this story pretty much follows the plot of Shrek Forever After to the letter. What I was kind of aiming for is how I'm sure all of us at some point in our adulthood wish we could be children again. My goal was to show Jasmine going through that stage in her life.
Jasmine ends up in an alternate timeline where nobody recognizes her. She is a nobody, and therefore is free to return to the Forests of Silence where she spends the first day of her week wandering around the forests, teasing the Wenn, swinging around the trees, doing all the things she loved when she was a carefree wild girl, though she inwardly admits she wishes Lief were there to enjoy the day with her.
On the second day, she finds a massive scar in the forest, like the aftermath of a huge wildfire. While exploring this fire, trying to figure out what happened, she is caught by a pack of gargoyle-like creatures, who cage her and take her to the Del Palace.
It is here she learns that the Shadow Lord is still in power in this timeline, and Rumpelstiltskin is his right-hand, and these gargoyles have replaced the grey guards. Kin are used as workhorses (Prin is hauling the cart Jasmine is in), people rely on Rumpel's deals for their livelihood (for example, a farmer signs a contract to keep his crops growing), and everything is awful. The gargoyles take her to Rumpel who explains all of this, that he took away the first week of Jasmine's life, therefore she was never born, and never saved Lief and Barda in the Forests of Silence, and that she will vanish forever once her week is over, and Rumpel's spell will be irreversible. Also, the Belt of Deltora's gemstones are kept in a vault in the palace.
With Prin's help, Jasmine escapes. She deduces that the Resistance must still be around, and locates them with Prin's help. She finds that Lief is the leader of the Resistance and that Barda and Jarred/Doom have died in battle. She learns that some resistance members found Lief and Barda in the Forests of Silence since Jasmine never did. Lief has become a cold, emotionless, war-driven man determined to keep his troops safe and drive out the Shadow Lord. Needless to say, he doesn't recognize Jasmine. He still has the belt, and the Resistance is working on a plan to break into the Palace and steal back the gemstones.
Neridah, and two of her sisters, Alma and June, are also part of the Resistance, and Jasmine befriends them. On a side note, I always liked the anime version of Neridah better than the book version. Jasmine opens up to them, revealing her contract with Rumpel. Neridah reveals that in this timeline, she also once signed a contract with Rumpel for gold. They explain that every contract has a loophole, and that Neridah got out of her contract when she nearly sacrificed herself for Alma. After folding up Jasmine's contract properly (in keeping up with the series' use of puzzles), All the big letters spell out "True Love's Kiss", meaning Jasmine and Lief must kiss to undo Rumpel's spell.
Jasmine tries to seduce Lief in his bed chambers, but fails, as he shows no interest in women at this point. Neridah and her sisters remind Jasmine how dedicated Lief is to the Resistance, and that showing some dedication herself might get his attention.
Another member of the Resistance, a friend from the past, perhaps Manus, Tira, Gla-Thon, Penn, or Ranesh, advise Jasmine to meet with Lief when he is alone, and tell him something only someone very close to him would know.
With only two days left of Jasmine's week, the Resistance prepares an ambush for Rumpel, hoping to cripple the Shadow Lord's forces. Jasmine meets with Lief before the ambush, reveals things about him she learned as his wife (one thing perhaps being about his toy kin, Monty). The ambush is thwarted however, revealing to be a trap set by Warren, who has defected to the Shadow Lord's side. He uses a magic pipe to force everyone to dance, and takes them all as prisoners to the Shadow Lord's palace. Filly and Kree, unaffected by the pipe's magic, help Lief and Jasmine escape.
Lief angrily blames Jasmine for the ambush's failure. At this point, Jasmine desperately reveals the entire story of her contract with Rumpel, and tells Lief to kiss her to undo the spell. They kiss, but the spell is not broken because Lief does not love Jasmine, that he no longer believes in romance after all these years of war.
Jasmine becomes depressed, and wanders alone into the Forests of Silence, thinking about her life, how empty and lonely it really was, and she misses her family. Eventually she spies a few angry mobs and bounty hunters exploring the forest searching for her. She manages to catch Jinx the acrobat, who reveals that Rumpel had put out a bounty for her head, with the reward being a contract with no trade-offs, and no strings attached.
Figuring she can still do some good with the little time she has left, Jasmine turns herself in to Rumpel, and uses the contract to free Lief and the entire Resistance.
Outside in Del, Lief rallies the resistance together for one last assault on the palace, deciding he will not let Jasmine's sacrifice be in vain.
In the palace, Jasmine is about to be fed to Reeah, now the palace executioner, but the Resistance break in and a massive battle ensues. Lief and Jasmine work together and defeat Reeah and catch Rumpel before he escapes on Fifi. The Resistance warriors also break into the vault and retrieve the Belt of Deltora, which Lief immediately puts on, and the Shadow Lord and his forces are banished from Del once again.
The sun rises on the last day of Jasmine's week, and she begins to fade away. She professes her love for Lief, tells him of the new life he had given her and how happy they were together, and about their children. They kiss once more just as she is about to vanish.
The world begins to spin, just as it did when Jasmine first came to the new timeline, and everything returns to the moment before Jasmine had her flip-out in the palace. She handles everything with a much better attitude, and the story ends as she and Lief enjoy gazing out at the sunset from their balcony.
