Chapter 4: A Mummy and an Oddball
After I had finally escaped from Gangplank and that bar I went straight back to my room and went to sleep, the next morning I woke up and decided to go fishing. The fish always seemed to be biting best early in the morning and I was starving. I thought about bringing my fishing pole, but it would be faster to just do it by hand so I left it and my trident behind in my room as I headed to the lake.
I hummed a merry tune as I swam through the lake with barely any effort on my part and caught as many fish as I could hold before returning to the surface. I deposited my catch onto the ground and picked one of the fish from the pile and raised it to my mouth to eat, I stopped when I heard something I hadn't heard before: talking. I looked around the lake and saw on the other side of it were three summoners talking to Amumu, I thought happily to myself that maybe Amumu had found some other friends to talk to. These thoughts were immediately gone when I saw one of the summoners kick Amumu over onto the ground, these weren't friends at all. Amumu didn't even make a effort to get up or fight back even though I knew he could've done both as he took the kicks the three summoners were giving him.
Anger was in my eyes as I got back into the water and swam across the lake as quickly as I could to where Amumu and the summoners were.
"Hey! What are you doing!?" I shouted as I made it to the other side.
One of the summoners, his face hidden behind his hood with long, brown strands of hair falling out the side, looked at me and smirked.
"Hey look guess, it's that fucking oddball, Fizz!"
The other two summoners stopped their kicking on Amumu to look at me and started laughing. My anger was amplified, not because of the name he called me since I thought it was stupid anyway, but because of the fact that they were hurting Amumu and I demanded a explanation.
"Why are you hurting my friend?!" I growled, the summoners didn't seem fazed by my act of aggression, I probably wouldn't be either since they did tower over me and I didn't have my trident or any weapon with me.
"We were just messing around, right Amumu?" The summoner with the long hair looked at Amumu for a response, but got none since he was crying and curled up into a ball. The sight only served to make me more angry and I don't know why I decided to do what I did next, but after listening to those jerks laugh at Amumu I was fed up. I jumped at the long haired summoner and sank my teeth onto his shoulder and might I add my teeth are really, really sharp. The jerk yelled out in agonizing pain as I sank my teeth deeper into his shoulder, he tried shaking, punching, and swinging me off, but I didn't let go off his shoulder even when I tasted his blood it only seemed to strengthen my animal like instincts. One of the other summoners decided to help his companion by pulling on me, but that only caused more pain for the summoner I was biting on since my teeth were sunk in so deep. Since I was too occupied with what I was doing I hadn't noticed the third summoner talking frantically into a orb he summoned nor did I noticed the sound of multiple footsteps running towards us until I felt a strong set of hands pull on me, these definitely weren't the summoner's because these hands actually managed to get me out of the jerk's shoulder, which was a horrible, bloody mess that I hoped would leave a even more horrible mark for him to remember what happens when he messes with my friend.
I didn't get too long to triumph over my "victory" because I felt a electrical current flow through my body that knocked me out cold.
"I can't believe this Fizz, what brought you to do something like this?" Summoner Sullivan shook his head disappointingly at me, it was a usual situation I was familiar with except this time I wasn't in his office and a desk wasn't what was between us but a set of iron bars of the cell I was in. I'm not in jail or the institute dungeons, the cell I was in looked more like one of the rooms in the medical ward more than a prison, minus the bars. I was lucky enough to be spending time in here besides the dungeons for assaulting a summoner like I did. The only reason I had to spend a day in this cell instead of weeks/months in the dungeons was because Amumu saved my rear by informing the tribunal that I was defending him.
"Those guys hurt Amumu, they deserved it." I gritted my teeth, not wanting to even think about those jerks.
"You know that they can't actually hurt Amumu since he doesn't feel pain."
"That doesn't make the fact they tried to any less worse." I crossed my arms and gave a look to Sullivan that I hoped told him I didn't want to talk about those guys anymore.
"I've never seen you act so violent before, so hearing you did…that, surprised me honestly."
True, even when I was in Summoner's Rift I never had acted with such violence as I did with those jerks, it was also the first time I ever sank my teeth into someone like that, I didn't even know I was capable of that.
Sullivan looked down at a watch on his wrist and sighed,
"I got to go now, once you get out of here try not to do anything like that again to a summoner, I don't know how many times the tribunal will tolerate that like they do your pranks."
"As long as no one attacks Amumu like that again then I can make that promise."
Sullivan looked at me for a few seconds before he wordlessly left, he was a busy man being a high summoner and all and it would be silly to think he would've been able to stay with me for long. I was all alone in the room now, except for one guard that walked up and down the narrow room but he wasn't going to keep me company. There were two other people in the room with me from what I could see from my cell, they were both apprentice summoners who looked like they just got out of a bad fight, probably with each other. The reason they put you in these cells was so you could be given a day to think over what you've done and they hope in that time you realize what you've done was bad and to never do it again, I had no regrets for what I had done, I would easily do it again if I have to.
The rest of the day in that cell was uneventful, I mostly laid in the bed in my cell until finally the next morning came and I was allowed to leave. The first thing on my mind was to go find Amumu so I went to the lake and sure enough there he was at the usual spot. I walked up to him, he must of not had heard me approach so I coughed to get his attention, he turned his head and looked at me.
"Fizz?" Amumu got up from the ground.
"That's me!" I said with a smile.
"But, I thought they would keep you locked up for a longer time, the tribunal was talking about keeping you locked up for a whole month!"
I shrugged.
"I guess whatever you said to them convinced them to let me out after a day, thank you by the way."
Amumu looked at me with a confused look on his face.
"What?"
"I didn't say anything to the tribunal…I-I wanted to, b-but I just couldn't get any words out of my mouth…"
"Wait, Sullivan told me that it was you that got me out of there early." What was going on I wondered.
"He must be mistaken…are you sure it was me he specifically said?"
"No, he didn't mention your name…he said my friend got me out, but I have no other friends besides you and Sullivan, and Sullivan didn't find out about what happened until way later so he couldn't have done anything."
Amumu looked as confused as I was, if it wasn't him then who I wondered. In my opinion he seemed like he would be the only one that would care enough to get me out of trouble him or Sullivan, but whoever did it was neither of them. Gangplank maybe? That was the closest guess I had, but he wasn't at the lake was he?
"Well whoever did it, I'm glad they did…I would've been alone if they didn't…"
"Hey, I would've had to be let out eventually."
"I know, still a month would've been a long time."
"Heh, longer for me since they have zero things to do in those cells, oh and the food there was awful, I would hate to have to eat that stuff for a month!" I giggled, once again I had those moments where I think I may have saw a small smile on Amumu's face, but if it ever was there it disappeared a millisecond afterwards. I stayed there at the lake for a few more minutes before I suddenly saw the familiar blue light around me, time for another match.
"Huh, as soon as I'm allowed to leave I have a match, see you Amumu!"
"Bye Fizz."
The first thing I began to notice about my team today as were teleported to the purple team fountain on Summoner's Rift was that everyone was really quiet today. Usually before the match begun Nami, Gangplank, and Miss Fortune would be talking to one another but this time there seemed to be a awkward silence between the three, especially between Gangplank and MF. I guess it was because of that break up thing since MF hadn't even once made a move to latch onto Gangplank like she usually did before the match started.
When I was finished buying my items I began to leave the fountain when MF suddenly asked,
"Hey, Fizz, how are you?"
I turned around and looked up at MF.
"Pretty good, how about you?" I asked with a friendly smile.
"...Okay… I uh heard about what happened at the lake."
"Oh, that…I was only defending my friend."
"Yeah, I know, those guys are jerks not only to Amumu but a load of other summoners too. Mostly people they know won't fight back."
"I can tell." I chuckled even MF seemed to give a small smile.
"Well, we should get going before the minions spawn."
I nodded my head in agreement, "Right."
Odd how MF seemed to be worried about me, we never really talked with one another and I saw less of her than anyone else on my team. Then a thought suddenly entered my head: could she have been the one that convince the tribunal to only have me stay one day in that cell? Why would she do that though? Was she even there? I took a long looked at MF as she walked to her lane before I headed towards mine.
Nothing really exciting happened during the match, what happened afterwards when the teams were returned to the summoning room was to say interesting. Gangplank had waited until MF walked out of the room before he suddenly came up to me and asked, "Hey, what did Sarah talk to you about."
"Nothing, why?" It was a lie of course, but I didn't feel like talking about what happened at the lake.
Gangplank looked down at me for a minute before he shook his head and said,
"Never mind, nothing….say, how about we go get a dr-" Not this time, I headed for the door quickly before he could try and grab me like he did last time. Before I went out the door I heard Gangplank say, "Hey, Nautilus, what do you say about us going to the bar for a drink?"
It wasn't the fact that Gangplank tried to drag me to the bar again that was interesting, but it seemed like when he asked me what Sarah was talking to me about that he wanted to say more, but held back saying it.
Once I left the room I saw something even more interesting than what happened with Gangplank, I saw the three summoners from before that beat Amumu. I could tell because one of the guy's shoulder was covered in bandages . They all saw me and looked at me for a second before they quickly walked away from me. I snorted, that bite would hopefully keep them from harming Amumu again.
"Uh...got any fours?"
"…Go fish."
"Ug, this is such a dumb game!" I frustratedly threw my set of cards to the ground.
"You wanted to play it Fizz." Amumu said, gathering the deck of cards back together.
"Yeah, that was before I knew I was bad at the game!"
"It's more of a game of luck Fizz, you must just be very unlucky."
"That isn't helping me feel better!" I groaned as I dramatically fell back onto the grass. "Let's play something else."
"What else can we play? Every time we play something you give up in the middle because you're losing."
"That's not true." I pouted, crossing my arms as I stared up at the stars. The only thing illuminating Amumu and me were the stars and the lantern I brought with me that was positioned carefully on top of the rock next to us.
"Well I don't know of any other card games we can play."
"Let's do something else than!" I got up onto my feet quickly and picked up the lantern.
"Aren't you tired?"
"Nope, I got enough sleep locked in that cell to last for awhile!"
"Where are we going then?"
"I don't know, there must be something we can do at the institute."
"The bar?"
"Don't drink, do you?"
"No, how about the library?"
"I want to do something exciting, not fall asleep."
"Well there is nothing much to do in terms of entertainment at the institute…"
I groaned, "I know, maybe I will go on a trip to Bilgewater tomorrow."
"Bilgewater?"
"Yeah, it's the city-state I'm supposed to be representing yet I haven't been there in over a month, heh."
"That sounds nice…"
"…Would you like to come?"
Almost immediately Amumu nodded his head and said, "Yes, yes please."
I knew Amumu long enough to know that he only wanted to go to Bilgewater was because I would be there with him, I didn't mind though, it would be fun to have someone with me. Bilgewater wasn't the most glamorous place to visit, or stay for that matter, but there was still a lot more things to do and see.
"So, how does this work? Can we just go?"
"Yeah, if you don't mind having to be called in for matches while you are gone than you don't have to ask for permission."
"Well that settles it, tomorrow we leave for Bilgewater!" I grabbed the lantern and moved to go back to the institute when I noticed Amumu was still back by the rock, I turned around and looked at him with a confused look. "Are you coming?" Amumu looked at me for a second then shook his head.
"No, you go on ahead."
I was going to protest and say that he should probably get some sleep, but I think not having to sleep was one of the things about him being undead. Amumu leaned back onto the rock and stared at the stars not once taking his eyes off of them once we both said goodbye to each other and even after I had begun to leave he just sat there looking up at the night sky with a unreadable look in his eyes. There was still a lot about Amumu I would like to know, I hope one day I would be able to know these things, but it seemed like it would take two lifetimes to fully understand that mummy. He was odd, emotionally unpredictable Yordle and he was my friend. I wonder what that said about me.
A/N: Not much I have to say, but I do have a question for you guys: how is this rewrite going? There's only been a few chapters and we still have a long way to go, but I would like to know how you guys think everything is going in terms of the story, my writing, etc. If you can please just leave a review or a PM letting me know if you want telling me how I'm doing it will be really helpful to let me know how I'm doing and you can also make some recommendations on what you would like to see.
Well, have a great day/night everyone!"
