Chapter 4: The journey from platform nine and three-quarters.
Haruki's last week with his father was fun. They spent most of the day to visit all famous places in London, trying out anything they could. Then the night was spent reading Haruki's books, trying new spells, helping him get back in to the English culture that Haruki had forgotten. Everyday was like that until the first day of September, when Haruki was finally going to Hogwarts.
They reached King's Cross at half past ten; Naruto shrunk Haruki's cart and let him place it in his pocket. Only the cage of Hedwig, Haruki's owl, was let in a cart for the boy to wheel it into the station with him. They walked until both were facing the wall between platform nine and ten.
"Alright, remember what I tell you, Harry. Walk straight at the barrier between platforms nine and ten," Naruto remind his son. "Don't stop and don't be scared you'll crash into it, that's very important."
"Eh, okay," Haruki said, he pushed his trolley nearer and stared at the barrier. "You sure this okay, Otou-san? It looked very solid."
"I'm sure, go on Harry. It's just an illusion. If you're nervous, just close your eyes and run straight at it," Naruto said.
Haruki did as he was told, and once he opens his eyes again, the sight in front of him was that of a scarlet steam engine, waiting next to a platform, packed with people. A sign overhead said Hogwarts Express, eleven O'clock. Harry looked behind him and saw a wrought-iron archway where the barrier had been, with the words Platform Nine and Three-Quarters on it; he had done it. Yay to himself!
Naruto came through a few seconds later and together, the two of them walked down the platform in search of an empty seat. They passed a round-faced boy who was saying, "Gran, I've lost my toad again."
"Oh, Neville," the old woman next to that boy sighed.
A boy with dreadlocks was surrounded by a small crowd. "Give us a look, Lee, go on."
The boy lifted the lid of a box in his arms, and the people around him shrieked and yelled as something inside poked out a long, hairy leg.
They pressed on through the crowd until an empty compartment near the end of the train was found. Haruki put Hedwig inside first and then turned back to his father.
"Now, remember what I told you before, Harry," Naruto said. "Be polite to the teachers and study hard. Make as many friends as you want, but only tell the ones you trust the most. Don't pick fights with people before you know who they are. And most importantly, prank as much people as you can," he grinned.
"You bet I will, Otou-san!" Haruki grinned back, and then he hugged his farther. "I'll miss you, Otou-san."
"As will I, Harry," Naruto patted Haruki's back a few time before they both let go of each other. "Now go and have a fun year. Call me once you get seated, I'm looking forward to hear what house you will be in."
"Even Slytherin?"
"Especially Slytherin. You know my history with that house; you know the truth; ignore what people say about it," said Naruto. The father and son shared one quick hug before Haruki hopped on the train. He sat down next to the window of his compartment where he could clearly see Naruto. They talked for a few more minutes until the train started to move.
Haruki watched his father disappear as the train rounded the corner. Houses flashed past the window. Haruki felt a great wave of sadness at this; he guessed it was unavoidable since the first time away from home was always the hardest after all.
"Alex? What are you doing, sitting here alone? And what happen to your hair?" The door of the compartment slid open and a redheaded boy asked.
"I'm sorry, but what are you talking about?" Haruki asked back; he definitely had never seen this boy before. The boy leaned in closer to take a good look at Haruki before his ears went pink.
"S-sorry! I mistook you for my best friend; the two of you look almost alike," he said.
"Really?" Haruki asked, wondering whom this 'Alex' the redhead was talking about and if he really looks like him.
"Yeah… However, look closely, you didn't look that much alike. Beside, Alex has red hair like me," answered the boy.
"Well, I would love to meet this friend of yours some time…"
"I'm Ron, Ron Weasley." The redhead introduced himself.
"And I am Hadrian Wilson, nice to meet you, Ron. I'm a first year at Hogwarts, what about you?" Haruki said, not forgetting to use his second name.
"I'm a first year too. Nice to meet you too, Hadrian," said Ron. "Um… I have to find my friend so…"
"You can go, Ron, I'll see you at Hogwarts anyway," smiled Haruki.
"Great! Bye, Hadrian!" Ron waved then quickly left, probably missing Haruki's 'Bye, Ron.' After sitting alone for a while, Haruki decided to play video games to pass the time. Thanks to his father's special seals, Haruki was able to use all of his technological items. The seals protected them from the magic's influence.
Around half past twelve there was a great clattering outside in the corridor and a smiling, dimpled woman slid back his door and said, "Anything off the cart, dear?"
Having only eaten a few kind of wizard candies before and now that his father no longer here to remind him of not eating too many sweats, Haruki got some of everything and paid the woman eleven silver Sickles and seven bronze Knuts. Haruki brought it all back in to the compartment and tipped it onto an empty seat. He spent the rest of the time listening to his I-pod and trying out all the candies he hasn't eaten before.
There was a knock on the door of his compartment some time later and the round-faced boy Haruki had passed on Platform Nine and Three Quarters came in. He looked tearful.
"Sorry," he said. "But have you seen a toad somewhere?"
When Haruki shook his head, he wailed, "I've lost him! He keeps getting away from me!"
"He'll turn up," said Haruki. "And if he doesn't, I could help you look for him later."
"Eh… Why can't you go look with me right now?" said the boy miserably. "Well, if you are busy..."
"No, that's not what I meant. I can use a spell to help you find your toad if you can't find it later," Haruki quickly said.
"You can do that?" The boy's eyes went wide. "I mean… Aren't you a first year too?"
"Yes, I am. But my father has been teaching me a little. I take it that you are a first year like me?" Haruki smiled.
"Um… Yeah… D-Do you mind helping me find my toad right now? I'm really worried about him," said the boy.
"Not at all. Come in; just let me get my wand. I'm Hadrian Wilson by the way," Haruki waved the boy inside.
"My name is Neville Longbottom, nice to meet you!" said Neville as he took a seat opposite to Haruki.
"Nice to meet you, Neville. Now, what is your toad's name?" Haruki asked after taking his wand off his pocket.
"His name is Trevor; my Great Uncle Algie bought him for me," Neville answered.
"Alright, Trevor it is," said Haruki. He had just raised his wand when the compartment door slid open again. A girl stood there and she was already wearing her new Hogwarts robes.
"Neville, what are you doing here? I thought you were searching for your toad," She had a bossy sort of voice, lots of bushy brown hair, and rather large front teeth.
"Hermione! Um… I was, but then Hadrian agreed to help me find him," Neville pointed to Haruki. The girl, Hermione, turned to look at Hadrian and upon seeing his wand, she walked in.
"Oh, are you doing magic? Are you going to use it to find Neville's toad? I've tried a few simple spells just for practice and they all worked for me. Nobody in my family has magic at all; it was ever such a surprise when I got my letter, but I was ever so pleased, of course, I mean, it's the very best school of witchcraft there is, I've heard. I've learned all our course books by heart; of course, I just hope it will be enough. I'm Hermione Granger, by the way, who are you?" She said all this very fast.
"Wow… How did you say all of that?" Haruki's eyes were very large by this point. "Don't you need to take a breath at all?"
"O-Oh, I'm sorry. It was just… my habit," Hermione's face was a little pink as she said this.
"It's okay, I guess. You may want to slow down next time though. It's…uhm, not very polite to talk so much like that at once, especially when you cut in on other's conversation, not to mention we had just met," Haruki said.
"Sorry, I'll remember it next time," said Hermione.
"Okay. So, I'm Hadrian Wilson. And yes, I can use my magic to find Neville's toad. It's a summon spell called Accio, my father taught it to me because he thought that it was one of the most useful spells, especially when you lost something," Haruki said.
"That's really great, if only I know how to use it too," Neville said.
"I'm sure you will learn it in Hogwarts soon, Neville!" Hermione said to Neville and then turned back to Haruki. "Can you show it to us now?" She tried to hide the excitement in her voice, but Haruki could saw it clearly.
"Of course," he smiled. "To do this spell, you have to say the spell name and the name of what you want to find right after it. Like this, Accio Trevor!" Haruki waved his wand and a few second later, a toad come flying through the door and into his hand.
"Trevor!" Neville cried. Haruki passed said toad to him. "Thank you so much, Hadrian!"
"You are welcome; try not to lose him again," Haruki told the boy.
"I will!"
"That was great; you must be really good with magic, Hadrian," commented Hermione. She looked a bit worried; Haruki remembered her words before and guessed she must be worried whether she will be able to catch up in study or not.
"Not really," Haruki said, trying to lower her worry. "I only know a few spells, and that's only because I really need to use them sometimes, I'm a bit forgetful at times. Otherwise, I know as much as any of you about magic. You will find that not many magical families teach their children any spells before Hogwarts, since they think it is not safe for them. Don't worry; I'm sure you will have no problem learning at Hogwarts."
"How did you…" Hermione asked, clearly surprised.
"It was written all over your face," he grinned. "Anyway, what house do you think you will be in?"
"Oh, I'm thinking of Ravenclaw, or maybe Gryffindor," Hermione answered.
"I want to be in Gryffindor, but I probably will be in Hufflepuff," said Neville.
"Why would you think that, Neville?" Haruki asked.
"Eh… I'm not… very good with magic. In fact, my family thought I was all-Muggle for ages," He admitted timidly.
"Now that was just nonsense. The house choice is based on your character, not how strong you are. Besides, there is nothing wrong with the Hufflepuff House; they are the house of loyal and hard-working, two very important character traits in my opinion." Said Haruki.
"I agreed with Hadrian; I'm sure you will do great no matter what your house is, Neville," added Hermione.
"Thanks, guys!" Neville smiled.
"Well, as for me, I'll probably be in Gryffindor or Slytherin. My father was hoping for Slytherin though," Haruki said.
"But why? Didn't you know that the Slytherin House is evil?" Neville asked, eyes widened.
"They are?" Hermione asked.
"Of course not!" said Haruki before Neville could open his month. "They only have a bad name because Voldemort came from that house."
"Y-You said his name?!" Neville gasped.
"Yes, so? That man was dead for ten years already; what is there to be scared about with saying his name anyway?" Haruki felt like rolling his eyes at this, but stopped himself in time.
"Uhm… I don't understand what you two are talking about." Hermione voiced her confusion.
"Right, you are a Muggleborn so you don't know. Have you read about a Dark Lord who was defeated about ten years ago?" Haruki asked her.
Hermione seemed to be thinking about it for a second before answer: "Do you mean You-Know-Who, the one that lost to the Boy-Who-Lived?"
"Yes, though don't call him that; his name is Voldemort," Haruki ignored another gasp from Neville. "He did a lot of terrible things and people were so scared of him that they couldn't even say his name. That is why they gave him that silly nickname. I think it is ridiculous though. You don't see anyone calling Hitler by a nickname, don't you?"
"True," Hermione agreed. Even thought she was frightened of Voldemort after reading about him, it is not much. Mostly she is just curious about his and the Boy-Who-Lived's power, awed by them too. Beside, growing up in the muggle world helped she understood what Haruki mean very easy. "I've always wondered why the book never says what his name is. Now that I think about it, it really was a silly thing to do."
"You two are mad," commented Neville, making Haruki laugh.
"No, we are not. It's called logic, which is something my father told me that wizards doesn't have any. You should get used to hearing Voldemort's name though, Neville… because I definitely won't stop anytime soon."
"Me too," said Hermione.
"Anyway, back to what I was saying before. Because of Voldemort, everyone now thinks that any witch or wizard who is in Slytherin will grow up to be bad, which is stupid, really. We are only eleven; how could they know if we will grow up to be a mad man or not. It's like looking down at black people just because their skin was black, which is totally not fair at all."
"B-But that's not the only thing!" Neville quickly said. "My grandma said that Slytherin was all Pureblood; those people always support You-Know-Who!"
"A father's sin can not be blamed on his son; haven't you heard that? Even if they are a spoiled brat because of their rich family, it doesn't mean that they will grow up to be an evil person. I won't ask you to change your view, Neville, but if I'm in Slytherin, I just hope that you will not judge me because of my house," Haruki said.
"A-Alright, I won't, Hadrian. You helped me find my toad; I don't think you are a bad person at all," Neville said.
"That's all I ask for," smiled Haruki.
"Why would you want to be in Slytherin anyway, Hadrian? Even after knowing its bad rep?" Hermione suddenly asked.
"Well, you could say that it is mostly because of my father," Haruki hesitated, wondering if he should tell them or not.
"Why? Are you a Pureblood?" asked Neville.
"No, I'm a Half-blood. My father is one though, but that's not the reason why he wants me in Slytherin," Haruki said. "Our family has a long history with the Slytherin house. Despite the fact that we didn't have any contact with them for hundred of years now, my father is still very fond of that house. He loves it, in fact, and he was quite angry with the way people been treating it. That's why he hopes that if I was in Slytherin, I would be able to clear its name and help untie it with other houses."
"That… is going to be very hard. It's not just me who doesn't like Slytherin, you know?" Said Neville.
"I know, but I can still hope, can't I?" Haruki shrugged.
A voice echoed through the train suddenly, "We will be reaching Hogwarts in five minutes time. Please leave your luggage on the train; it will be taken to the school separately."
"Oh Merlin, it's that late already? I have to get back to my compartment; I still haven't changed in to my robe yet!" Neville quickly stood up. "Sorry, Hadrian, I need to go, see you later."
"I have to go back too. Bye, Hadrian," said Hermione.
"Sure, I need to change in to my robes too. Bye, guys!" said Haruki. They waved goodbye before Neville and Hermione left.
Haruki took out his trunk and un-shrunk it, pulled out his black robe and pulled it over the clothes he already wore. They would go to bed right afterwards so why bother to change fully anyway. The train slowed down and finally stopped. People pushed their way towards the door and out on to a tiny, dark platform. Haruki shivered in the cold night air. Then a lamp came bobbing over the heads of the students, and Haruki heard a loud voice yell, "Firs' years! Firs' years over here!"
A grand of a man was standing not too far away from where he had got out. Haruki guessed this is the Gate Keeper who his father had told him about. What was his name again? Oh, right, Hagrid.
"C'mon, follow me - any more firs' years? Mind yer step, now! Firs' years, follow me!" The man, Hagrid continued to yell.
Slipping and stumbling, Haruki and all the first year students followed Hagrid down what seemed to be a steep, narrow path. It was so dark on either side of them that Haruki thought there must be thick trees there. Nobody spoke much.
"Ye' all get yer firs' sight o' Hogwarts in a sec," Hagrid called over his shoulder, "jus' round this bend here."
There was a loud "Oooooh!"
The narrow path had opened suddenly onto the edge of a great black lake. Perched atop a high mountain on the other side, its windows sparkling in the starry sky, was a vast castle with many turrets and towers.
"No more'n four to a boat!" Hagrid called, pointing to a fleet of little boats sitting in the water by the shore. Haruki stepped on one and were followed by Neville and Hermione.
"Hi, we meet again," Haruki grinned at them.
"Hello again, Hadrian," said Hermione and Neville at the same time. They both looked at each other and laughed.
"Everyone in?" shouted Hagrid suddenly, who had a boat to himself. "Right then - FORWARD!"
And the fleet of little boats moved off all at once, gliding across the lake, which was as smooth as glass. Everyone was silent, staring up at the great castle overhead. It towered over them as they sailed nearer and nearer to the cliff on which it stood.
"Heads down!" yelled Hagrid as the first boats reached the cliff; they all bent their heads and the little boats carried them through a curtain of ivy that hid a wide opening in the cliff face. They were carried along a dark tunnel, which seemed to be taking them right underneath the castle, until they reached a kind of underground harbour, where they clambered out onto rocks and pebbles. Then, they clambered up a passageway in the rock after Hagrid's lamp, coming out at last onto smooth, damp grass right in the shadow of the castle. They walked up a flight of stone steps and crowded around the huge, oak front door.
"Everyone here?" Hagrid asked, then without waiting for an answer, raised a gigantic fist and knocked three times on the castle's door.
