A/N: Just wanted to take a minute here and remind everyone that this story is a loose lead up to my one shot A Werewolf on Elm Street. The timeline is really different as in this story Edward dumps Bella just after Summer Vacation starts, and she meets Jesse shortly after that. Bella is going to seem more traumatized because she's still in the process of getting over the after-effects that Edward and his dazzling had on her. Carlisle may have said two weeks but in reality she really won't be over it until she meets Sam. She's definitely crying out for help and Charlie may or may not be useless. We're also seeing a much more involved version of Sam in this story, not involved as in with Bella, but involved as in he basically seems to be stalking her hardcore, and he is (kind of) but he's also truly worried about her. Don't forget in the one shot you're seeing the culmination of the month and a half that he was watching and waiting. In this you get to see the process, but because of the timeline change it makes a little more sense that Bella will be pretty well over the trauma by the time she and Sam really get introduced. At this point in the story though she's basically a depressed mess trying to hide behind the guise of being a bad girl.
**Bella POV about an hour later**
Leaning back against the passenger seat of Jess's SRT, I gaze out the window watching the scenery blow by. I'm not sure if Jesse's driving too fast, or if I'm just real high… it could be a little bit of both to be quite honest.
We had dropped off the truck, and stopped by Jess's connect to pick up some good. Dami rolled the L before we left the guy's, and we had smoked the majority of it on our way back to Forks.
We're just over the town line now, and Jesse passes what's left of the blunt back to Dami. He hits it, and tries to pass it to Tommy, who passes, stating, "Nah man, I'm good."
He holds it out to me next, "Bell?"
I shake my head, breathing out, "Nah, I'm chill..."
He opens the window and clips it against the side of the car, and that's when it happens, lights flash, a siren sounds, and Jesse groans, "oh fuck me!"
We all straighten up in our seats, and the adrenaline clears my head like I've been dunked in freezing cold water. Jess says quietly, "Bella, on your side of the middle console is a can of air neutralizer, please spray it very discretely. Dami man, I'm sorry to ask this of you, but please eat that roach. Everyone just be fucking cool."
I sprits the neutralizer, and I can't help but smirk remembering Charlie's courtesy card in my purse. I wink at him, "Don't worry, hon, I got this."
He looks a little worried, as he pulls the car smoothly onto the shoulder and puts it in park rolling down the window. I go into my wallet and grab out the card with a little gold shield on it that Charlie had given me, along with my Arizona state id card."
The officer strides up to the window, leaning in to look us all over. His eyes stop on me, lingering over my legs in the short denim shorts, traveling up to take in the expanse of bare stomach to my purple tie-dye halter top.
Jesse smirks a little, before clearing his throat, "Uhm, is there a problem officer?"
The cop snaps out of it, and tries to affect a stern demeanor, "Yes, there is. You were doing 65 in a 50. I'm going to need to see your license and registration. I'll also need ID from your passengers."
Jesse nods, "I'm really sorry about that officer. I guess I was a little distracted and I wasn't paying attention to the speedometer…"
He pauses to take Dami and Tommy's ID's and I hand him mine along with the courtesy card, and he hands them out to the cop, as he says, "I mean can you blame me? You see what I'm sitting next to right?"
The cop chuckles, but the laugh dies in his throat as he gets to my ID and the courtesy card along with it. He leans down, and speaks to me directly, "Miss, I can give you this license card back and we'll consider it an honest mistake no harm done… but using a fake ID in order to use a police courtesy card is a serious mistake."
I tilt my head in confusion, and reply, "Umm, that is my ID sir, my father is Police Chief Charles Swan. I grew up in Phoenix with my mother, that's why I have an Arizona Driver's license. Go ahead and check it out…"
**Charlie POV**
The phone on my desk rings, I pick it up, "Swan."
Kay answers, "Uh, Charlie, could you come out to the radio please?"
I answer, "Ok. Be right there."
Leaving my office I go down the hall to Kay's office where the dispatch radio is located, and ask, "What's up?"
She looks nervous, as she answers, "umm, I have Officer Wayne on the radio for you."
Picking up the walkie, I push the button, and say, "This is Swan, Over."
Wayne replies, and I really wish he had called in on the phone as his voice carries through the office, "Uh hey Chief, I have a girl approximately 17 yrs of age ID given says Bella Swan. Brunette, brown eyes, with 3 white males in a dodge charger srt black with blue racing stripes. Anyway, the car was clocked going 65 in a 50, driver seems a little glassy eyed, passengers all appear inebriated in some way, I believe they were smoking something when I first saw them, but I don't smell anything in the car, and there was nothing in plain sight, nor did I see them toss anything out of the car. I wouldn't call you about this, but the girl is attempting to use your courtesy card along with an Arizona license. She claims she's your daughter."
My eye is twitching, I can feel the vein on my forehead throbbing angrily… the only saving grace is the only two people in the office right now are myself and Kay. I have a choice, I could have Wayne haul them in, mess up any chance my daughter has to go to a good college? T he boys she's with all have rich mommies and daddies, I had done a little research on the SRT which led me to the Collins' family, and their network of rich friends.
So they'd get off with slaps on the wrist, if that, and I would be humiliated. Nope, not gonna do it. I hit the button, and say, "She's my daughter Wayne. Do me a favor and confiscate the courtesy card. If there are no drugs or alcohol in plain sight you can go ahead and send them on their way. Oh, and let my daughter know that she and I are going to have a long chat tonight. Over."
Wayne replies back, "Ten four, Chief."
**Bella POV**
The cop comes back up to the window, takes a cursory look around the car, and hands Jesse back everyone's cards. Jesse looks through them, and asks, "What about her dad's courtesy card?"
The officer leans down, and tilts his shades down catching my brown eyes with his steel blues, as he says, "Your father gave strict orders to confiscate the card. He also said to tell you, that you and he will be having a talk tonight. Now if you were my kid, I'd have all 4 of you hauled into the station, even if I didn't press nothing on you, but since you're not…and Chief gave his orders… you're all free to go. Be careful out there, you don't have any more get out of jail free cards, kid."
I nod, and Jesse answers, "Thank you officer. We'll slow it down some, we're not lookin for trouble."
The officer smirks at Jesse, and says, "Kid, that's about all you're headin for. You have a real nice day now."
And before Jess can say another word, he strides back to his cruiser, pulls back onto the road, and drives off out of sight.
Jesse turns to me with a smirk, and in a bad Cuban accent intones, "BELLA! You got some 'splainin to do!"
We all crack up, and I say, "Yeah well, you know, if Daddy wants to have a long talk tonight, I guess I just won't go home until tomorrow!"
I put on a little pout, and ask him, "So can I crash with you tonight?"
He smiles at me, and answers, "Of course you can. The rents are leaving to go to some fundraiser deal in Seattle, they won't be home until mid-afternoon the day after tomorrow. They actually might be gone by now…"
Tommy speaks up, "Yeah, they might be gone by now, they're flight out's at like 5. They're going to stay with my parents at their penthouse in Seattle. I think they might be planning to split us up before the summer's up…"
Jesse waves him off, "Nah man, Gramps is coming back from Vegas next week, they'll clear out shortly after that. I mean that was half the reason we moved out here was so that they could go do their shit and not have to leave me alone. I mean god forbid. Well they only have 2 more years until I get my trust fund anyway."
**Sam POV**
I watch in shock as the cop goes back to his cruiser and pulls back out onto the road, leaving Bella and her friends. With my wolf hearing I had of course heard the exchange between the officer and Chief Swan, and I just don't understand what the fuck he was thinking!
The wolf part of me that sees Bella Swan as his wants me to go over and yank her out of that SRT and protect her the way her fucking father should be protecting her. The officer who had pulled them over had point blank told Chief Swan that everyone in the car seemed inebriated, told him he suspected there was drugs in the car, and Chief Swan just told him to take her fucking courtesy card away?
What the fuck kind of cop out parenting was that shit?
I hear Bella say to the driver, "Yeah well, you know, if Daddy wants to have a long talk tonight, I guess I just won't go home until tomorrow!"
She asks to crash with him, and of course he says yes, he's probably been waiting for this to happen ever since they met. Shit, there's no way for me to stop this. Whatever is going to happen is going to happen.
My heart lurches in my chest as the vehicle pulls off the shoulder… fuck, she could be killed riding in that car and then what the fuck would I do!
My wolf body sticks to the tree line, following the sound of the Charger's engine, it's a distinct sound, powerful, and easy to track, so at least there's that. It takes about 20 minutes, but eventually I'm up around the former Cullen house deep in the woods. I follow the sound of the engine onto a nearby property and get a decent vantage point of the back door.
The 4 of them get out of the car, and I see Bella… she's wearing tiny short shorts with a tiny purple top, she's very pale, the sun almost glares off of her bare stomach. I'm surprised to see a belly ring winking from her middle, the fake emerald flashes in the light.
Tall asshole puts his arm around her shoulders, she wraps hers around his waist, and they lead the way inside the house. I can tell they're trying to be quiet as they go in the back door. They're probably trying to avoid his parents.
I think about leaving, the house is pretty much soundproofed so there's really no point to my hanging around outside. Yeah I really should go… before I can move, an upstairs window slides open, and voices drift down, "So uh, Bella, do you want to crash in my room tonight? I'll take the couch."
Well at least he's being polite about it… unfortunately for me though, I hear her answer, "Don't be silly Jess, this is your room, your bed is big enough to share, I'm okay with it if you are."
Feeling like I got kicked in the nuts I hear the wolf whimper. And all of a sudden Jared's in my head, "Don't do this to yourself Sam. Whatever's going to happen is going to happen whether you sit here, and listen all night, or not. Do you really want to torture yourself that way?"
Sighing internally, I think back, "I guess you're right… I just don't even know what to do with this, man… she obviously needs help. How am I supposed to help her when I haven't even really officially met her yet? And that guy in there? He certainly ain't the good news. Hell, even her FATHER can't be counted on to do the right thing by her!"
I play him back the scene with the cop and how Chief Swan copped out and did nothing more than take away her fucking courtesy card. Jared makes a disapproving noise, "Tsk, that's a damn shame… I don't know what to tell you man, when the time is right, you'll know. Obviously that time's not now though. So again I have to ask you, do you really want to listen to it all night? Especially if they get up to what they're probably going to?"
Frowning I think back, "Nah. You're right. I'm going. Maybe you could do me a solid and come back up around here later tonight? Just to make sure she's okay?"
He responds, "Sure thing man. No problem, now get out of here before Paul phases in and sees this."
And with that thought in mind, I get up and bound off into the forest towards home.
**Bella POV around midnight**
With Jesse's parents out of the way we had all cut loose more than we typically would with them in the house. No damage was done to the house, but both Tommy and Dami were passed out draped over the arms of the sofa in the basement.
I'm slightly drunk, but very stoned, the room is spinning around me, it's hard to focus. I feel like I'm going to float off the floor, through the house and out into space.
Jesse comes back into the room and puts medium sized trash cans on both sides of the couch. He comes over to me, and I look owlishly up at him, unable to really focus as he bends down and says, "You wanna go to bed, babe?"
I nod, and he scoops me up into his slender but strong arms. Everything seems to be in fast motion, I give a little shriek and wrap my arms around his neck, holding on tightly. He chuckles at me, kissing the top of my head as his rough whisper vibrates against my ear, "It's okay babe, I got you. I promise, I won't let you fall."
He carries me easily through the house, up the stairs to his bedroom, closing the door behind us before gently depositing me on the bed.
The room spins a bit, and I close my eyes, willing the feeling to go away, and then embracing it. I feel like I'm on the ceiling, like there's nothing under me but air. It's amazing, but I know it can't last. Jesse strokes the hair off my forehead, and says, "Hey, Bell. Look at me, Baby."
I open my eyes and he smiles, "Okay, I just want you to see where the trash can is. You might need it in the morning. Are you alright?"
I nod, feeling like my head is going to roll right off my shoulders, and I try to answer coherently, "I'm k. I'm floating, Jess. Like I'm on the ceiling. Don't let me get out the window, okay?"
He laughs, "You're not floating Bell. You're in my bed. I promise, I won't let you fly out the window."
Kneeling down beside the bed, he pulls my sneakers and socks off, moving me around so that he can pull the sheet up on top of me, pausing to say, "If you're uncomfortable you can take your shorts off. I'm not going to do that for you though, okay?"
Smiling I reach down and fumble with the button on the shorts. I can't get it. My fingers are all fumbling and stupid. Looking up, I catch Jesse's eye, and ask, "Help?"
I hear his breath catch in his throat a little, and he looks really concerned as he asks, "Bella are you sure you want me to do that?"
Pushing the sheet down, I nod my head yes, and Jesse reaches out, his fingers brushing against mine as he easily pops the button through the hole. He smiles, "There you go. Easy as pie."
I struggle with the zipper for a second, but then it goes down easily, and I lift my hips up to pull the shorts off my body revealing the matching bikini bottoms that go with my halter top. Jesse smiles and he seems a little relieved.
He backs up towards the door, "Hey, since you're all settled I'm gonna go down and sleep in the living room, okay?"
Pouting, I reach out to him, "Don't."
He looks at me quizzically, and I repeat, "Don't"
Looking torn, he comes back to the side of the bed, and asks, "You don't want me to go?"
I shake my head, I really don't want him to go. For the first time since I met him my body is full of tingles. I want him close to me. I want to feel him next to me. I can't figure out how to get my mouth to work though so I just hold out my arms.
Jesse backs up, and says, "gimme a minute."
He goes to the dresser across the room, and pulls out a pair of gym shorts and an undershirt. He glances back at me, and I pretend to close my eyes. I watch him undress, he's tall, and very slim though he actually has decent muscle tone. He's solid with a wiry strength, nice butt too. He doesn't turn to face me until after he has the shorts up. I'm a little disappointed.
He doesn't bother with a shirt, just turns the overhead light off and comes over and carefully climbs over me into the bed. I'm starting to come down from my stoned state a little, and I move back against him. He asks quietly, "do you mind if I put my arms around you?"
I whisper back, "I would actually love that… Thank you."
**Sam POV about 90 minutes later**
My cell phone rings, and I see that it's Jared, so I pick up, "Yeah? What's the news?"
I can almost see him shaking his head at me, as he answers, "Well the good news is they're not doing anything physical. The bad news is he seems to be a pretty alright guy, and I think she might be starting to have feelings for him."
Annoyed with the lack of details, I press, "What do you mean they're not doing anything? Are they sleeping? Is she in his bed? Is he in his bed? Did he touch her? What do you mean he's an alright guy? He's getting her stoned and drunk on a daily basis, he's not the good guy."
I can hear the shrug in his voice, as he replies, "Okay… I mean they're not doing anything. Obviously I wasn't in the house, but I was close enough that even if they were doing it quiet as church mice I'd hear them. The window to his room was open, he offered to sleep on the couch Sam, and she asked him to stay. He asked her permission to put his arms around her… she said yes. Since then the only sounds I hear are deep even breathing. Honestly man, drunk and high driving isn't a joke, and I agree with you that that shit makes him shady. Everything I've observed of the way he treats her though, especially the way he treated her while she was high makes me convinced he's not a bad guy. He's not getting her stoned and drunk bro, at worst all he's doing is helping her get herself stoned and drunk.
Jared cuts off, and then breathes out, "Shiiiiiiit."
Worried, I panic, "What? What happened? Is she okay? What are they doing? Should I come down there? I'm coming down there."
Jared sighs disgruntledly into the phone, "Sam! Knock it off. Physically she's fine, they're not doing it, but they're about to have a very rude awakening…Her dad just pulled up in his cruiser."
Amazed at the balls on her dad, all I can do is breathe out, "Oh. Shit."
**Bella POV**
I haven't been asleep for very long, that much I'm aware of, the only other thing I'm aware of is Jesse shaking me gently, and whispering harshly, "Bella!"
My eyes snap open, and I exclaim, "What? What's wrong, Jess?"
That's when I hear it… pounding on the front door, and Charlie's voice coming over a megaphone from the open window yelling, "ISABELLA SWAN! YOU GET YOUR ASS OUT HERE, AND I MEAN LIKE YESTERDAY!"
He's fucking kidding me, right? This man who has literally never been a dad to me has the nerve to come hunt me down at my fucking friends' house in the middle of the damn night? Where was he all the nights I was home and living in a fucking haze? Where was he while I was barely eating and only half existing? Where was he when I actually needed his ass?
Throwing off the sheet, I grab the shorts off the floor where I dropped them and hurriedly put them on, not bothering to close the button as I storm out of Jesse's room and down the stairs. Thank god his parents are away. I call back over my shoulder, "Go make sure Dami and Tommy stay downstairs!"
He nods and jumps out of the bed, following me downstairs, and continuing on down to the basement as I stride to the door, and throw it open as Charlie is preparing to pound on it again.
His eyes bug out, and his fist falls to his side, as he takes in my angry expression. Arching an eyebrow at him, I demand, "Can I fucking help you?"
Taking a deep breath, he states firmly, "Get your things, we're going home."
Setting my expression I cross my arms, and answer, "Actually I'm going back to sleep, which is what we were doing when you suddenly decided to come out here and play daddy."
I feel Jesse come up behind me and he cups my shoulders in a supportive gesture, as he says, "Sir, this is private property, and I know my rights. Your daughter is a legal adult according to the laws of this state, you have no right to be here. Of course if Bella want's to leave, that's up to her, if she wants to stay though, she's going to stay, and I'll be happy to take her home when she's ready to go home."
Dad cuts him off, "You listen here, you snot nosed rich son of a bitch, I could have had you, and your buddies in a world of trouble this afternoon. I did all of you a favor, at the risk of personal and professional embarrassment. All I have to do is tell a judge that I smelled marijuana in your house and it becomes a legal search with or without a warrant."
Jesse replies, "Actually, you're a few years late on that ship, Chief Swan. Recreational marijuana use is legal in Washington state. You'll have to try a little harder."
Charlie smiles, as he retorts, "Oh really? Because the way I interpreted the law was the way it was written, which is that recreational use of marijuana is legal in Washington state for those residents OVER 21. So… Jesse Collins, son of Rick and Debra Collins, born May 4, 1997, I believe that makes you 19… tell me again how I have to try a little harder."
Jesse leans down, and whispers in my ear, "Sorry about this, Babe."
He straightens up again, and his voice is hard, "You come in here without a warrant, and I'll see to it that my parent's lawyers shred you. You want to talk about personal and professional embarrassment? I'll give them the whole story of what happened this afternoon, omitting nothing to shield myself from punishment, and then I'll have them subpoena the cop you had let four inebriated teenagers get back on the road. The cop who told us that if Bella was his little girl, he'd have had all 4 of us brought into the station, even if he didn't press any charges on us…just to make us think. So you tell me, Chief, you ready to explain to a judge, your bosses, and all of your constituents just why you let your daughter go on her way with someone who was probably definitely inebriated behind the wheel, and your only concern was to have him take away the card that identified her as the Police Chief's daughter?"
Charlie is white with rage, his lips are so thin that I think they're going to disappear, the vein in his head is throbbing so hard I'm afraid it's going to burst, and his eyes are so bugged out that I'm worried they're going to pop out of his head.
I see his hand twitch towards his belt, and then it stops, and he turns and walks away, getting into the car and pulling out of the drive fast.
Jesse lets out a sigh of relief, and I don't blame him. He guides me back inside, shutting and locking the door behind us, and he sinks down into one of the living room chairs, and says, "Holy shit, I think I just decided what I want to be when I grow up…"
Laughter bubbles out of me and I ask, "Oh yeah? What's that?"
He chuckles, and answers, "A criminal defense lawyer. In all seriousness though, are you okay? I probably shouldn't have spoken to him that way. He's your dad after all."
I snort derisively, "He's closer to a sperm donor than a dad. My mom left him when I was still an infant. After we moved, my contact with him consisted of the odd phone call on my birthday and at Christmas where he would tell me he'd see me in the summer, but then summer would come and he'd be too busy. He was the Captain of the Port Angeles Police Department back then. When he retired from that job and moved back to Forks to be the Chief he decided he wanted to get to know me. Originally I told him to fuck off, well not in those words, but you get my drift. He told me he'd pay for my college tuition to whatever school I wanted to go to if I came out here to finish High School with him. I moved out here last December, and the longest amount of time he's really spent interacting with me was the drive from the airport. Since then he's basically been at work the whole time, or so he says. I think he just realized that the whole father daughter thing wasn't worth it and he decided to just go back to his normal life. Fuck him if he can't take a joke, you know?"
Jess nods, shaking his head, "I feel you. I mean you know my story, the rents shipped me off to boarding school basically as soon as they could, if it wasn't for Gramps I really wouldn't have any real family. He's enough though."
He stands up, holding out his hand, "C'mon beautiful, let's go to bed."
Smiling shyly at him, I take his hand, and say, "Okay."
We go back upstairs, and he pauses in the hallway to adjust the air conditioner, before guiding me back into his room. I cross the room and shut the window, looking out I see a freakishly large wolf sitting at the edge of the tree line.
The wolf seems to be staring right at me, and a shiver runs through me. Jesse comes up behind me and runs his hands over my bare arms, asking, "Are you alright?"
I turn to look at him, answering, "Yeah, I just…"
Looking back out the window there's nothing by the trees, and I breathe a sigh of relief, continuing, "I just thought I saw something, but it must have been my imagination."
Grasping the cord, I shut the blinds, and we both walk over to the bed. I strip my shorts off quickly and jump under the covers. Jesse takes off the shirt he had thrown on before confronting my dad, and slides in next to me.
Snuggling up to him, I lay my head on his chest, and whisper into his neck, "I'm really glad we're friends, Jess. I don't know where I'd be right now if I hadn't met you in the park."
He tilts my face up so that our eyes meet, and he answers, "I'm glad I met you too. It's gonna really suck to go back to school in August. I'm going to miss you."
A panicky sick falling feeling grips me, but I brush it off, I knew he was leaving, he'd said that right from the very beginning. Putting on a fake smile, I say, "Let's not think about that okay? Tonight let's just concentrate on right now."
He leans in, and his lips brush over mine, his facial hair tickles, but it's a nice tickle. I kiss him back, taking it a little deeper, enjoying the feeling of physical contact, happy to have someone in this state who gives a shit that I'm alive.
**Sam POV**
Wandering through the woods I keep my mind carefully closed off from the pack mind. I had met Jared up by Bella's friends' house. I'm almost positive she had seen me in the yard out his window, she looked a little scared, and I had taken the opportunity when her friend came up behind her to get out of there.
The time's not right, as Jared is always reminding me. Looking around I realize that I've ended up on the edge of Charlie Swan's yard. Listening carefully I hear nothing to make me think he's here. Phasing back to human, I pull on the gym shorts I had strapped to my leg, and carefully loop around the house.
The police cruiser that Charlie drives is nowhere in sight, and there are no lights on in the house. Circling back around I see the tree leading up to Bella's window. Jumping up into the tree, I bounce a little to test the limb. It seems sturdy enough…carefully I ease myself down and inch my way out across the branch.
I hold myself steady on the branch, reaching out across the gap, I slide the window open and quickly jump inside. I know, it's crazy to be doing this. The wolf needs to feel close to her. I inhale sharply, but the only thing that I smell is Cullen. This can't be good for her to still be breathing in the lingering smell of him.
Turning back to the window, I open it wider, and cross the room to the window on the adjacent wall, and open that one as well. Looking around, I see a room that's not anyone's home. There's nothing personal here, the bedding is generic, and there are no posters on the wall, nothing that tells me anything real about her.
Cullen's scent is strongest in the corner, there's a white rocking chair that absolutely reeks of leech. I sit down in the chair and rock, listening to the wind blowing through the trees outside.
