The Keeper of Keys and Grounds:
After packing some clothes and important things, they all went to a small black rocky island in the middle of the sea near Great Britain.
There was a small, neat-bricked hut in which they took refuge in. The top floor was given to Petunia and Vernon; they slept in a huge old bed. The bottom floor with only one couch and a small un-lit fireplace was given to the children. While spoilt Dudley was given the couch, Jenny and Sophie were forced to sleep in rags and blankets on the floor.
Jenny though couldn't sleep at all. The thunder and lightning was booming outside and the noises echoed into the house. She lay on her rugs drawing something in the soot that was spread out from the fireplace. She drew a huge circle with lines on the outlines to represent candles. And in the circle, she wrote 'Happy Birth Jenny'. Once it was midnight, she would be 11 years.
She turned her head to a snoring Dudley's hand handing down from the sofa and saw his watch turning to midnight.
She was eleven!
She turned back to her soot drawing and said, "Make a wish, Jenny," she blew on the drawing as if it was an actual birthday and thought of the perfect wish.
"Happy Birthday, Jenny," a small, quiet voice said from behind her. She turned her head and saw Sophie smiling. Jenny sat up and faced Sophie. She handed her a small-paper card. Jenny said, "Thank you" and looked at the card.
It had a drawing of a snowy owl and 'To the best cousin in the world' written in glittering red ink at the bottom. Jenny opened the card and it read, 'To Jenny. Happy Birthday and I truly hope that you can find true happiness in your life. Lots of love Sophie'
Jenny hugged Sophie and gave her a kiss on the check.
"I'm sorry I couldn't get you a nice small gift,"
"Oh, Sophie. I've already got a gift from you,"
"What is that?"
"You being here is all I need," the cousins shared another loving embrace.
After that, Sophie asked, "What was your wish?"
"I can't tell you,"
"Why?" If there was one thing Sophie disliked (besides her parents' and her brother's selfish, abusing treatment towards Jenny) it was Jenny keeping secrets.
"Because if I do, it won't come true,"
"But will you tell me, what it was, once it comes true?"
"Of course, I will,"
Suddenly there was a huge bang against the wooden door at the other side of the dirty room. Then another. And another. Someone was trying to barge in.
Jenny grabbed Sophie's hand and they hid by the side of the fireplace. Vernon and Petunia had heard the banging from upstairs and they came down with Vernon carrying a musket.
Meanwhile Dudley jolted awake and stumbled back against a small window near the couch and screamed. Petunia turned one single lamp whilst her husband pointed his weapon at the sound-making door.
The door fell down and a huge giant figure emerged from the darkness outside. Everybody except the two hiding girls screamed. In stepped the giant door break, he had a shaggy brown beard with matching medium length hair. He wore huge boots with a ginormous-sized brown coat. "Sorry about that," the figure said looking at Dudley with soft brown eyes. He walked back to the broken down door and pushed it back in its place with his strong hands.
"You are breaking an entry!" Vernon shouted. "Leave at once!"
The giant stranger just walked over and gripped the end of his musket, "Don't talk like that, you brute!" he easily bend the end and it shot a bullet through the ceiling. They all screamed. The figure turned round and saw Sophie against the fire places side. "I haven't seen you, since you were a baby, Jenny. Though you're a bit shorter than I expected,"
"I'm not Jenny," Sophie nervously answered.
Jenny decided to step out and introduce herself seeing that this mysterious yet kind intruder meant no harm at all. She came out of the dark shadow of the fireplace's side from behind Sophie and said, "I'm Jenny,"
"Well of course you are," the figure spoke again. "I'm afraid I might have sat on it but it'll still taste very delicious," he reached behind his coat and took out a white squared package with a blue ribbon tied round it. "I baked it myself, words and all,"
Jenny took the package and opened it revealing a round pink-icing cake with the words: 'HAPPEE BIRTHDAY JENNY' written on it in green.
Jenny immediately loved it. No one had ever given a birthday cake before. Usually on her birthday, Sophie was only able to get a nice Victoria sponge cupcake. "Thank you,"
"It's not every day, your young women turns 11 now is it?"
The giant turned and sat down on the coach because of his button, he fitted completely on the piece of furniture. He reached into his pocket and pulled out thin, pink tied-up umbrella. He pointed it at the unlit fireplace and two sparks of fire came out of the umbrella and went into the fireplace lighting it up. Everyone stood there surprised. Jenny meanwhile wanted to ask questions to that strange giant who mysterious knew her name. She placed the package down on the couches' side arm and asked, "Excuse me but who are you?"
"Rubeus Hagrid, Keeper of the Keys and Grounds at Hogwarts," Hagrid introduced his name. "Of course, you know about Hogwarts,"
"Sorry, no I don't I'm afraid,"
"No?" Hagrid asked surprised. "Didn't you ever wonder where your mum and dad learned it all?"
"Learned what?" Jenny asked.
"You're a witch, Jenny," Hagrid answered leaning his head slightly forward to her.
"I'm a what?"
"A witch," Hagrid answered again. "A good one I'd wager once you're trained up,"
Petunia and Vernon were watching with disgust. They never wanted this to happen.
"No, you've made a mistake," Jenny kindly refused shaking her head. "I mean I can't…I can't be a witch. I'm Just Jenny. Just Jenny,"
"Yes, that's right," Petunia cut in wanting to take this opportunity to kick Hagrid out. She stepped down to Jenny. "She's just Jenny. So Hagrid, if you know what's best for you, you'll go and leave poor Jenny dear alone," she attempted to take Jenny's arm and pulled her away but Sophie blocked her mother. "Leave her alone,"
"Now, look here young lady…" Petunia was cut off by Hagrid pointing her umbrella at her.
"It's Hagrid. Not Hagrid. And if you'll know what's best for you, you'll listen to the little girl and back away,"
Petunia stepped back scared of what Hagrid would do to her if she refused.
Hagrid turned his attention back to Jenny. "Well, Just Jenny, did you ever make anything happen? Anything you couldn't explain if you were angry or scared?"
Jenny about what Hagrid asked. She started remembering strange, mysterious things that had happened in her life. She once remember her aunt cutting her hair very short only for it to suddenly grow back to its normal length the next morning. She also remembered that one time when she was running from Dudley and his gang, she suddenly felt herself flying towards the roof of her school. Additionally there was that time when a teacher was berating her in one of her primary school lessons when her hair mysteriously turned blue in front of the class causing a spark of hysterical laughter. Then finally there was the Vanishing Glass.
"Yes. There were things that did happen," Jenny replied. "Things I couldn't understand,"
"You see," Hagrid continued. "That is a sign that you have magic and that means you are a witch," he stood up from the couch and took out a letter from his coat pocket. He handed it to Jenny and she saw it was just like the other ones she had failed to open.
She opened it revealing a letter with neat writing and a long list of things. She read on the letter
"Dear Miss Potter, we are pleased to inform that you have been accepted at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry,"
Vernon stomped to the talking people and shouted, "She will not be going! We swore when we took her in, we'd put a stop to all this rubbish and never let her know the truth about her wretched parents!"
"You knew?!" Jenny shouted in anger for the first time in her life. She twisted her head to her aunt. "You two knew the entire Time? And you never thought of telling me?!"
"Of course, we knew you wretched girl," Petunia hissed in a gentle but angry voice. "How could you not know how perfect your mother was? My parents were proud of her for her magic and on the day she got her letter, they were excited for what that school could do to tutor her. They said: 'We have a witch in the family. Isn't that wonderful? Lily is so gifted'" Petunia stepped closer to her husband as she continued to snarl at Jenny. "I was the only one who saw what she truly was. A freak!"
"Don't you dare say a thing like that about Aunt Lily!" Sophie shouted. "The only one who is a freak is this family is you!"
Petunia slapped Sophie in the check and she shrunk back in pain. She started crying so Jenny pulled into her arms and held her close to her chest.
"Soon after she attended that freakish school…" Petunia continued on at Jenny instead of focusing on her crying daughter. "She met that James Potter and soon after their marriage, they had you. I knew you would be the same. The same strange, abnormal, woman she was. She then had to get blown up leaving us to get stuck with raising you,"
"Blown up?" Jenny ranted still keeping her gentle but strong hold on Sophie. "You told me my parents died in a car crash when I was a baby!"
"A car crash?" Hagrid questioned so angered. "A car crash killed Lily and James Potter?"
"We had to say something," Petunia retorted back. "The letter told us to do it,"
"Letter? What letter?" Jenny asked confused. During the argument, Dudley took Jenny's cake in its package and snuck back to the window sill.
"It's an outrage! A scandal!" Hagrid shouted at Petunia and Vernon not answering or caring to explain to Jenny what they meant by the letter.
"She'll not be going to that school!" Vernon ranted. "And that's that,"
"Oh…" Hagrid answered back in a mocking tone. "And just how is a fat, lousy, muggle like you goanna stop her?"
"Muggle?" Jenny aksed. "What's a Muggle?"
"Someone who's non-magic," Hagrid explained before turning his gaze back to Vernon. "This special girl has had her name down since she was born. She's going to the greatest and finishes school of witchcraft and wizardry in the whole world. "And she'll be under the turoing and guidance of the finest headmaster that Hogwarts has ver had: Ablus Dumbldore," he said the final part proudly.
"I'll not pay some old crook to teach her stupid magic tricks," Vernon ranted. "She is noting going to this stupid school! And that's final!" he attempted to grab Jenny as she was still hugging Sophie still crying from her painful slap; Hagrid pointed his umbrella at him. "Don't insult Dumbledore in front of me," he warned. "Jenny is under my protection now and she'll be going to Hogwarts whether you like it or not,"
They all heard munching and loud chewing. They turned and saw Dudley greedily gulping Jenny's cake. Sophie turned her head a bit from Jenny's chest and saw Dudley scoffing up their cousin's cake. She rushed to her older brother and snatched the package from his hands. "That cake is not yours!"
"Give it here!" Dudley shouted attempting to snatch it back.
But Hagrid aimed his umbrella at his bottom and small spark of white came out and it made the tail of a pig sprout out of Dudley's butt.
Vernon, Petunia and Dudley screamed at his new pig-tail whilst Jenny and Sophie laughed with delight. The three screamers ran upstairs in fright. Hagrid smirked at his little trick and whispered to Jenny, "Please don't mention that to anyone at Hogwarts. I'm not allowed to do magic outside Hogwarts,"
"I won't tell anyone," Jenny promised with her face displaying trust.
"I won't tell anyone about your magic, Mr. Hagrid," Sophie joined earning a sort of strange questioning look from Hagrid. "As you already know, I'm very different from my family. I for one think magic is cool. Jenny has got to go to that school,"
"But I can't just leave you, Sophie," Jenny said. "You could come with me,"
"Sorry, Jenny but it is a forbidden for Muggles to come to Hogwarts. Even if they are nice and kind to people with magic.." Hagrid solemly explained. "Unless you'd rather stay with her of course,"
"Jenny, you've got to go to that school. You'll finally be able to make friends with people who are like you and you can be happy,"
"But I'm worried about how unhappy you'll be at Private Drive,"
"I will be fine, Jenny," Sophie answered. "And besides, we can always write letters to each other right?"
"She's right, Jenny," Sophie answered. "And besides, we can always write letters to each other right?"
"She's right, Jenny," Hagrid mentioned. "Students always write letters to their families," He took out a small gold pocket watch and said, "We're a bit behind schedule, we'd best be off,"
Jenny looked at Hagrid as he went to the door and pulled it down. He turned to her and asked. "Are you ready?"
Jenny nodded but said, "Please give me a moment to say goodbye to Sophie,"
"Okay, but it must be quick," Hagrid reluctantly answered softly.
Jenny turned round and pulled Sophie into her arms and Sophie wrapped her arms round her waist. "I'm goanna miss you, Sophie," Jenny gently sobbed.
"I'm goanna miss you too," Sophie sobbed a bit. The cousins' hug lasted a few seconds before they forced themselves to let go. Jenny picked up the car, Sophie gave her. Sophie handed the package with the remains of the cake in. Jenny took it with a 'thank you' but then she took out a huge cake and gave it to Sophie who took it saying: "Thank you," to her. Before going to Hagrid, Jenny grabbed her coat and some shoes before kissing Sophie on the forehead. She and Hagrid walked out of the broken door and Jenny waved goodbye to Sophie. She disappeared out their sight and she strolled away with Hagrid.
Off to go to Hogwarts.
