Sonic and the legend of Redwall.

Chapter 4: Friend or foe?

Sonic limped helplessly as he forced himself to walk with the aid of his newly acquired wooden crutches. The humanoid rodent was currently walking down the torch-lit stone hallways as he slowly but surely stridden to get to the place the Redwallers called: Cavern Hole. Sonic had no idea why but his brain was desperately searching for something, something that was trying to call out to him. Sonic gave another grunt as he pulled his lower body once again upwards against his crutches so he could move another inch towards his destination. He cringed as the soles of the sneakers on his feet hit the stone tiled flooring since as they did, it sent a horrible pain shooting up his legs and body.

"Gagh!" Sonic yelped through tightly gritted teeth as he felt the pain in his body harm him so much. Luckily, he managed to escape the Mouse maid's watchful eye while nobody was looking and grab his new means of walking. He was lucky to have escaped at all in this state. His body may have been badly injured somehow but his persistent spirit was still the same. As he slowly wandered down the stone halls, only going when the pain had completely subsided from the last step, he decided to look at his surroundings which seemed to be without end as he had never gone this slow in his life.

The blue hedgehog noticed a small light at the end of these halls and grinned sharply at the sight as he hurried a little, trying to ignore his agony, but all of a sudden he heard a worried gasp that was followed by a yell "SONIC THE HEDGEHOG!"

Sonic instantly recognized that yell. It was Cornflower. She did not sound the least bit happy as Sonic picked up the pace a bit in an effort to escape her fury but within seconds, the mouse maiden caught up to him and grabbed his peach arm firmly. Sonic yelped as she touched his sore bones but Cornflower did not seem to care right now and as he looked over his shoulder ever so slightly, he saw the anger in Cornflower's red-brown eyes and this made a sweat bead reveal itself from the right side of his head as he grinned in a nervous manner.

"Uhhh..." Sonic began awkwardly whilst he laughed nervously as he steadily raised a frail arm and extended all his fingers in a motionless wave "...Hey, Cornflower. What's happening?"

Cornflower raised a claw in a silent threat to hurt him but her anger-filled eyes softened when she stared into the hedgehog's own rather sad ones. The spouse of the Redwall warrior slowly lowered her claw as her entire face slowly matched her eyes and her mouth hung open slightly as she instantly saw a certain look on the hedgehog's face. Being the wise mouse she was, Cornflower relaxed herself and asked him in little more then a whisper "Are you looking for something, Sonic?"

Sonic looked kind of surprised since his brows instantly raised as soon as she spoke but he nodded nonetheless as he explained while bringing a hand gently to his forehead and began rubbing two fingers tenderly on his head to ease his mind of some of the pressure "I dunno why, Cornflower, but I have the feeling that somethings calling to me." He pointed towards the light at the end of the hall "I think its coming from over there."

Cornflower realized what this meant instantly as she let out a small gasp and brought a claw to her mouth. Sonic's own eyes widened as he asked in equal shock "What is it, what's the matter?"

The mouse maiden wordlessly took Sonic by the hand and gently yet hurriedly led him towards the lit up area, Sonic giving loud yelps of agony each time he hobbled. It turned out to be a room where many of the night's flame torches were flickering brighter somehow in this room that seemed rather similar in structure then the halls the two had just left but it was more roomy and had much more space. The thing that caught Sonic's attention, however, was a tapestry on the wall.

It looked like any normal medieval tapestry but instead this one had a mouse wearing a knight's Armour centering in the very middle of this long piece of sewn cloth. Surrounding this mysterious mouse was quite a few other things such as a few rose buds, some buildings one fire and a sword. There was even a small, simple sentence just above the mouse warrior that said "I am that is".

Sonic was silent as he saw this tapestry somewhere before. He didn't have a clue where but the hedgehog knew he had definitely seen this before. Was it in a dream perhaps? He racked his brain for answers on this mystery but he suddenly heard a not so familiar voice speak his name "...Sonic."

"Yeah?" Sonic answered as he looked around for the source of the voice but this earned him a strange look from Cornflower. Sonic shook off the stupidity from the look the mouse maiden was giving him and asked her while pointing his ear in a way to help him listen out "Hey. Did ya hear that?"

"I didn't hear a thing, Sir Sonic." The mouse maid replied confusingly as she stepped forwards until she was at the foot of the tapestry. She felt her kind heart beat slowly as she was reminded of when her husband, Matthias, had become the warrior of Redwall abbey at the young age of 13. He had grown a lot since then and she was proud of him every moment. Her attention was turned to the blue hedgehog as she heard him take a few hobbles forward and look up longingly at the tapestry with her.

"...You miss your home don't you, Sonic?" Cornflower asked as she never dared take her eyes off the old tapestry in front of her. Sonic gave a nod and replied "Yeah, I do. There's someone at home whose probably missing me a lot." Sonic spoke sadly as he lowered his head sadly and muttered to himself "I wonder if she hates me...?"

It was then that Sonic lifted his head curiously as he asked "Why did ya bring me here?"

Cornflower just pointed towards the left of the wall hanging and Sonic followed her finger to the corner of the fine drapery to find just a very small section of it was looking quite odd. Sonic had to squint his eyes towards it since it was that small but it looked like a blue hedgehog with azure fur was frozen in the air alongside a ginger furred mouse who wore a green monk's outfit, both of them holding swords as they got ready to slay what seemed to be like a cloaked figure who was concealed by his cloak which was a dark as night. Sonic knew it was unmistakably him but the only difference was that the hedgehog on the hanging wore a teal vest and he seemed to have not a limb broken...Sonic on the other hand, knew that this was not going to happen any time soon.

The humanoid mouse female turned her head to face Sonic and told him with her ancient voice sounding so important that he couldn't block her out even if he tried "Sonic, you are to rescue Redwall from catastrophe when it comes to strike us. It is a fate both you and Mathias share and I have a feeling that this is bigger then it seems."

Sonic's brows pulled together to form a middle together look as he was seriously confused now. He had no idea what Cornflower meant by this but he knew he had to focus on healing and finding out more of this situation's nature. It was then that the sound of rushing footsteps enclosed the two of them and they instantly saw a familiar young grey male mouse run as fast as his legs could carry him. It was Tim church mouse!

"Tim!" Cornflower exclaimed as she ran to the little mouse's aid while Sonic limped along as fast he could. The adult mouse knelt down beside the breathless child and asked him, knowing full well that something was wrong "What is it, where's Mattimeo?"

"Hah...Hah..." Tim panted for air as he doubled over to touch his knees, trying his best to speak but was too tired. As he looked up to the two panicked adult rodents, he finally regained enough energy to speak "Somebeast is climbing over the north walls...He's got Matti!" Tim breathed and noticed that the last sentence made the two panic more. After a few moments, Sonic had finally managed to speak through the horrified expression "C-can't Matthias do something?!"

Tim replied "He's trying to do something but I fear that even he won't get to him in time!"

"Not if I can help it!" Sonic proclaimed with a certain confidence underlying his voice but as he began to break into a sprint, he completely forgot that he could barely move by himself and fell as soon as he put his leg down on the floor and his cries of pain were so loud that everyone in the abbey most likely would have heard him.

"OWCH!" Sonic squeak as he hit the stone floors, earning blunt, dry looks from the other two mice that were in his presence.

A lone figure climbed the stone walls with Mattimeo as his captive. The young boy mouse was slung over the hooded figure's shoulder as he punched the guy's back in an attempt for him to release him at once. "Let me go, you creature!" Mattimeo yelled fearlessly as he continued beating the beast's back with his tightly clenched claws but each time he did, he felt not only his boney back but also the soft dusk velvet of the cloak he wore.

"Hang on, my son!" Matthias yelled as he leaped from a different wall that he hung on by his sword and jumped but not before he could the guy's cape and wriggled around as he grabbed tightly to the mysterious foe's cloak, not managing to get it off him but at least fighting to save his only son. The adult mouse held on tight to the cape of the hood as he dangled like a little spider on a loose string of web and his side bashed against the roof as he fought with all his might.

As soon as Matthias caught side of the figure's thin white furred leg, he wasted no time and done the most desperate act he could think of: Bite his leg.

While his strong jaws clamped down on the foe's leg, he suddenly found himself being surrounded by a turquoise aura and was instantly thrown backwards into a wall before he began to fall down back into the lower grounds of the abbey. Mattimeo extended his arm out towards his falling father with tears lining the bottom of his red-brown eyes as he shouted in horror "Father!"

Acting immediately, the figure leaped over the wall with a confident feeling that nobody would be able to follow with Mattimeo breaking down shamefully over his shoulder. Down below, Matthias was still falling as the ground was coming closer and closer into view and he shut his eyes tightly as he prepared himself for the pain he was about to feel. But strangely enough, no such feeling of pain came. The warrior of Redwall managed to open his eyes as he felt someone clutch his own hand and noticed that not only was Tails flying by using his trusty tails in a propeller-like fashion but he was also just lightly hovering in the air just inches from the grounds where many had surrounded and watched in awe.

Tails lightly placed Matthias on his feet and plopped himself down on the ground with a grin on his white scruffy muzzle. Everyone cheered as they were content with the satisfying fact that their warrior was alright but Matthias' thoughts were not focusing on himself.

"Mattimeo..." The older mouse gasped worriedly as he gazed over the shoulder longingly at the wall but Tails just scratched his chin in wonder "Hmmm...Curious. Very curious." While he was thinking about what he had just saw, Tails walked off towards a different direction to get a look on their technology since he was intrigued on their ancient weaponry and plus; Building helped him think.

Mathias was about to follow the young foxy-tailed mechanic when he suddenly saw a lonely silhouette out of the corner of his eye. Because his body was a far distance, he appeared to be nothing more than the shadow of a lonely beast who the mouse warrior knew. He knew he had to find his son but he had no idea of how to track him, but he had a feeling that this talk with one of the new arrivals would do great good.
